Although Wesker's passing was for the greater good of the world, Ilona struggled to accept losing the partner she spent thirteen years in a complex on-and-off romance story with.
Now, she had to learn to move on for the sake of her daughter, especially when finding out she knew less about Albert than she thought...

---
Albert Wesker was dead. Ilona knew that much.
The year was 2013. It had been four years since Ilona left Albert and Excella, teamed up with Chris and Jill, and helped take Albert down before he could destroy the world.
Ilona didn't think Albert had turned Jill into a mindless minion. She never though he would turn on Excella, their shared partner, turning her into some horrific creature. She could look past the virus planning, as she had been studying anti-BOW vaccination and needed his work so she could do her own, but this? She never signed up for that.
Albert wasn't the man she met in late 1996 when first joining the STARS Alpha Squadron. This wasn't the man who proposed to her mere months before the Arklay Mansion incident in 1998 when they split off. No, whatever man she reunited with in 2006 was someone entirely different, even from the man at the mansion, and even then she didn't know the full picture until it was too late.
Jill seemed to forgive Ilona, given they were best friends — and briefly previous lovers — in the past. Chris, on the other hand, was more strained, but he still held a civil friendship with Ilona. She didn't want to push that, given she was already lucky enough that Jill managed to look past Ilona's dumb mistakes.
In hindsight, Ilona felt her dumbest mistake was allowing herself to carry on the Wesker bloodline. Shortly after Albert died, Ilona found out she was pregnant, but ended up keeping it. She gave birth to a young Keegan Powers, who took on Ilona's own surname.
Keegan was just a bit over three years old at this point, and while it was hard to shake the memory of her past lover, given he was the father, Ilona did her best every step of the way to show her daughter love and compassion.
So now, here she was.
The BSAA had called in Ilona for a confidential meeting. She wasn't sure what for, but all she knew is that she needed to come alone. Jill had thankfully offered to watch Keegan while Ilona met up with Chris.
She sat at a table in a dimly lit room, across from Chris. Another agent she didn't recognize stood behind Chris, not speaking a single word.
"Am I in trouble?" Ilona asked, a nervous chuckle escaping her.
"Not this time," Chris responded; his response felt like a quip, but his tone felt hardened. "I need you to sign this before anything else."
A form was laid out in front of her, legally declaring that she was not allowed to share anything spoken to her in this room that day with exception of BSAA members and any other related parties. She signed it without any trouble, but her thoughts were racing.
Chris took the form, handing it to the other agent, who then left the room.
Ilona had her suspicions, and now that the form was agreed upon, she figured she may as well ask.
"Chris... is this about Albert?"
The mere mention of the name seemed to hit a nerve with Chris. He exhaled deeply from his nostrils. "In a way, yes."
"In a way?" Ilona's heart sank; the response seemed so simple, and yet left her with more questions than a direct yes would have. "What's so complicated about it?"
"Everything will be explained in a minute." Chris's words were spoken with such robotic cadence, as if Ilona was a stranger.
Ilona looked over at the mirror on the wall of the room before turning her attention back to her old friend, leaning over the table closer to him. "Look," she spoke in a low murmur, "we were friends once. Can't you just tell me right now what's going on?"
Chris seemed to hesitate his words, but could get something out. "This'll be far easier to explain once the... other party gets here."
"Other party?" Ilona sat back down properly, her head feeling light. What other party? Who else out there that knew Albert could possibly be out there? Years ago, Albert attested to anyone he knew at Umbrella was long gone. Ilona personally witnessed Excella's downfall, and Excella had reported other direct allies of Albert's falling to their demise. Anyone that was against him was already in the BSAA, or an affiliate like she was.
Her mental spiral was interrupted when the door to the room opened once more. The agent from before peeked their head in. "Redfield, is everything ready?"
"Affirmative," Chris confirmed.
The agent walked into the room, and behind him was a young man who seemed to be in his twenties. The young man sat down next to Chris, while the agent stood behind the two men in silence yet again.
Ilona furrowed her brows, observing the man in front of her. She turned her attention to Chris. "I don't recognize him," she stated.
"I know," Chris affirmed. "Ilona Powers, this is Jake Muller."
Ilona fixated her gaze back onto the man — Jake — still feeling a sense of confusion. "And how exactly does this relate to—?"
"Jake is in the process of having his identity covered, but given your shared tie, we felt an obligation to tell you about it."
Jake's face mirrored Ilona's, who looked both upset and entirely lost.
Ilona took a second, but a pit formed in her stomach when she connected the dots. "He knew Albert?"
Chris shook his head. "Jake is Wesker's son."
Ilona paused, taking in the information, but then let out a snort before erupting into laughter. "Really, Chris? I knew we used to pull each other's legs a lot, but this is some fucked up new low for you." She took a quick breath for air. "No, no, obviously that isn't Al's kid. He has one child, and that's Keegan."
"Who the hell is Keegan?" Jake questioned.
"She's..." Ilona cleared her throat. "My daughter."
Jake's eyes widened. "So you—?"
The agent behind Jake and Chris cleared their throat before putting down a folder on the table, which Chris slid over to Ilona.
"It's all in here," Chris stated. "Before the STARS office in Raccoon City formed, Wesker had a child out of wedlock with an Edonian citizen while he was stationed there."
Ilona opened the folder, flipping through the legal documents. She saw Jake was born in 1992, and that he was indeed Albert's kid. She flipped faster and faster through each legal certificate and printed email supporting these details before slamming the folder shut. "There has to be some sort of mistake. If Albert had a child, I would have known. He never mentioned any other woman, or any other kid for that fact."
"Well, too bad, lady," Jake shrugged before crossing his arms. "I didn't want it to be true either, but here we are. And now you're telling me there's another kid out there with that lunatic's genetics?" He turned to Chris. "And you knew about this?"
Ilona wanted to bite back, but Chris cut in between the conflict.
"Look," Chris explained, "it's a long story."
He turned his attention to Jake first. "Ilona here had entered a relationship with your father before she knew of his plans. Why she stuck around after finding that out is still a mystery—" Chris briefly glared at Ilona, "—but I wanted you two to know about this now rather than after we covered all this up. We covered for her, and now you'll get the same. Are we clear?"
Jake grumbled something under his breath, but nodded in compliance.
Now it was Ilona's turn to be spoken to by Chris. "I don't care how long it takes you to accept it, but whether you like it or not, Wesker hid things. You know he did that. Hiding a son is trivial in the grand scheme of what he kept under wraps. All I'm concerned about is that you keep this between yourselves and the BSAA."
He turned his attention to both parties. "You can learn to get along with each other over your shared problem, or don't. You can also entirely forget about each other the second you leave this room. It doesn't concern me either way."
Chris stood up. "We'll give you two some privacy to work it out."
With that, Chris and the other agent left the room, leaving Ilona and Jake alone together.
Jake scoffed. "You must've been some sort of crazy bitch yourself to stick with someone like him."
Ilona crossed her arms, trying to hide her frustration enough to stay civil. "It was different, nothing Chris seemed to ever understand even after all these years have passed. If you people saw the side of Albert I did, you wouldn't be judging me this harshly."
"What exactly did you see, then? After you found out he was some nutjob supervillain?"
Ilona sighed. She didn't expect herself to be this open, but it was like something in her mind clicked at the revelation of Albert's secret child.
"You know, I asked that to myself when I initially ran into him again. I broke off the engagement when we last saw each other, and I didn't think it was worth it. But then..." Ilona let out a soft chuckle. "I don't know. It was like deep down, the human part of him was still there when we'd be alone. Granted, it wasn't the same as when I first dated him in the late nineties, but it was there. I'm sure your mother saw it too."
Jake scowled. "Don't bring her into this."
"But you wouldn't call her crazy, would you? Even when she loved Albert all the same?"
"She isn't like you. She never knew about that side of him."
"But it still shows that he wasn't just some monster. At least, not the Albert I knew. The second I knew that part of Albert was gone, I left." Ilona teared up. She quickly wiped her eyes. "You know, I briefly saw what your mom had told you about him, in the files."
Jake tensed up. "Yeah, and she also said he cared about me. Given you never even heard of me, that goes to show how much he really gave a shit about his kid."
Ilona fell silent. "Do you think he even knew? I mean, your file says you were born overseas back in Edonia."
"Hell if I know, and at this point, hell if I care." Jake rolled his eyes. "Hell if he cared, too."
A pause.
Jake spoke up again. "You said there's another kid?"
Ilona nodded. "Yes, Keegan, I mentioned her earlier. I only found out I was pregnant after he died."
"And you kept it because...?"
"I always wanted a kid, and it wasn't her fault who her father was."
Jake cocked an eyebrow up. "Do you plan on telling her about her father?"
Ilona bit her lip. "I'm... I don't know, to be honest. Legally, I can't reveal the truth until she's an adult, but by then, would that help her or hurt her?" She paused. "How did you feel?"
Jake stared at her, not saying a word.
Ilona tried to backtrack in response. "Look, you don't have to answer, I'm just—"
"It wasn't easy."
Ilona's eyed widened. "Go on?"
Jake leaned back further into his seat. "You try feeling good about yourself if your absent father turns out to be some crazy supervillain terrorist." He pointed at her. "You want advice? Here's mine. Your kid's gonna feel like shit. She's gonna think whatever his deal is might pass onto her. Do her a favor and be there for her through that."
"Is that what you felt?"
Jake looked away. "I've done things no normal person would do. I know whatever he had going on passed onto me. I've just gotta come to terms with it."
Ilona felt guilt sink into her chest, but also a sense of empathy. "I've got my own stuff to come to terms with, too, but... you're not like him. Knowing how he was at the end, he would have never admitted he was in the wrong." She smiled weakly. "I don't know jack about you besides what I learned today, but you don't seem like him. Hopefully I can say the same about Keegan when she's your age."
"Hopefully you can say better," Jake simply responded before getting up. He left the room without another word from either party.
Once Ilona was alone, it was like a balloon in her burst, and she wept. So much happened in such a short time, and she could barely process it. At least she had the rest of her life to do so, but she wasn't even sure anymore if she would even sort her feelings out before she passed on...
...
Once she got home, she thanked Jill for helping out with Keegan and sent Jill on her way for the night.
As she watched Keegan play pretend with her dolls, Ilona's phone buzzed. She opened it and saw a message from Chris.
"Muller wanted me to give you this. Do with it what you want."
Attached was Jake's contact info: namely, his phone number and email.
Ilona smiled, replying with a quick thanks before putting her phone away, returning her attention to the toddler in front of her.
