I think my biggest language pet peeves now are all just the plague of business jargon in which some genius consultant makes up a bizarre frankenword that we must all now understand and use instead of the very well known word that already exists for its purpose.

Today's example was 'solutioned,' (do you mean solved?) but business language is absolutely plagued by this phenomenon. Examples like... 'decomplexify,' (simplify?) and 'learnings,' (lessons?) which is now particularly ubiquitous.

God. I'm still holding a grudge against kpmg for 'disbenefits'. Disbenefits.

Blogging Week #2

IN 2 HOURS (and around 20m), we continue the blogging week with an assorted array of website work!

Come to this "choose our own adventure" stream to learn about my infinite website TODO list, and brainstorm some improvements we can make together!

Some options:

JS/CSS sleuthing: setting up some cool-looking JS-driven interactions (and learn a bunch in the process)

Fancy content collections: finally get a streaming schedule set up there, with "local timezone" and "next up" display

Installing more remark/rehype plugin, like fancier codeblocks or... maybe even making one ourselves?

putting together work emails to my leadership team is like the reverse of real writing. first vomit all the thoughts, then go through and painstakingly edit until all you have left is an anatomical blueprint of the skeleton. then go through and scrub off any lingering emotion or personality, then do a sweep through to add just enough of both of those back in an acceptable manner.

then hopefully it's short, but if not remember people don't want to read things so go through and pare it down more.

I used to work at an office where my boss would force me to go to events and "mingle." It was terrible, I always said the wrong thing. Then, he would make fun of my lack of social skills.

I started a new job and was filled with dread when I heard that there was a mandatory BBQ today. After an hour, I snuck back inside. I cannot express the sheer joy I felt when I found that my wing was full of people just hanging out at their desks!

You know those "could this have been an email?" work memes?

I went to one of those psychometric workplace hr exercises recently and the actual key discovery out of the hours of that seminar was that about 80% of those people would sincerely prefer face to face contact rather than phone calls or emails.

I was reminded, then, that people who work 40+ hours a week in a separate physical location must achieve a fair amount of their human connection at their workplace.

So I've been thinking about those memes and I guess it turns out that, actually, it could not have been an email. It had to be a meeting. Not for work collaboration reasons, but because many people need to hear "How are you? Is your son recovering from his cold? Did you get to that pub you wanted to try in the end?" in order to feel that human connection in a workplace context that seeks persistently to dehumanise them.

As one of the minority of "I don't know why this wasn't an email and I feel anxious that you're trying to talk to me and now I'm trying really hard to remember how friendly go bzzzt," people, this was eye opening to me and it made me think about the memes more.

Didn't justify the hours and hours spent on unscientific psychometric testing and nonsense activities, but it was definitely the silver lining of the exercise. I'll take it.
