It's just fascinating how much people want the creators who speak to you at your worst to be, like, not even good people, but nice people. Creators whose art makes you go "Oh, wow they really nailed my struggle with grief, anxiety, depression and badly repressed rage," are... not going to be nice people. On average.

Me watching someone's anxious borzoi vibrate faster than the speed of sound: thank god it's not more bad YA takes.
Update: my YouTube recommendations are now safely returned to their usual state of dumb stories about people's pets and cats yelling out the window, with only the occasional look in from BookTube. Phew.

I really like the upcoming change to the default comments setting for new works.
Due to an influx of abusive spam comments on April 21, 2024, we temporarily disabled all guest comments across the site. We have now re-enabled the ability to leave guest comments, but if you comment while not logged into an account, you may encounter a verification page that checks that you are not a bot. We are also working on other ways to help reduce spam, including a small change to the default comment settings on the work posting form that will be rolled out soon.

Oh my god I'm just realising I called the Ino & Hidan/Kakuzu fic 'working holiday' and the fic where Ichigo goes to the elemental nations 'The one where Ichigo takes a trans-dimensional working holiday' ..... even when I'm trying to name a fic like an adult.... this.

I think it's fine to say mushrooms are culinary vegetables if you want, actually.
Like yeah, they're the fruiting body of a fungus, but pumpkins are fruits and sweet potatoes are roots. They can all be culinary vegetables together. I'm not mad if someone says "eat your vegetables," and they mean mushrooms. It's fine.

In the 2000s, texts we had to study in highschool were things like A Minimum of Two, Looking for Alibrandi, The Whale Rider, inevitably one (1) Shakespeare play with every iota of joy sucked out of it, 1984, Go Ask Alice, Dispossessed: A Tale of modern Rural Australia... I think in very early highschool we got some stuff like Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, too. The film we did in VCE was Lantana, which I didn't mind, but which certainly doesn't break the deeply miserable mould of these texts.
I think it's probably possible to include young adult novels that aren't extremely tiring issues novels in our curriculum? And yet having glanced through the VCE picks this year, the best they're offering you is Pride and Prejudice. I guess at least that's, like, not straight-up miserable. But it's not necessarily super relatable to the 17 year old reader.
I don't know, it always seems to me like it would be hard to learn to read as a lifelong escape from the horrors of existence if we expect school to be the place where kids acquire that skill.

I want to procrastinate on the tasks of the day by writing tiny ficlets to amuse myself but I'm also so sleepy. I think putting off breakfast and coffee for 6 hours probably hasn't helped.

Honestly if you're friends with me, though, you are almost guaranteed to sit through at least one rant about how "intelligence," is fake. If you're close friends with me you get to hear it, like, god, at least once a year. Maybe once a quarter.

The thing that reddit and tumblr have in common is that everyone on both sites thinks they're smarter than everyone else simply by virtue of knowing that everyone thinks they're smarter than everyone else.
They mostly don't realise that everyone knows this. But that's not because they lack smarts. It's because understanding that they are actually part of a cohort of people who share characteristics means reflecting on and then rejecting the narrative — which they're clinging to like a security blanket, that's why they're here, keep up — that they're different, unique or special.
Honestly it's kind of the same reason the people who are so keen to howl "you are not immune to propaganda," never seen to have the capacity for self reflection that would permit them to understand that they too are part of the cohort of people who are not immune to propaganda. What do you mean? Of course they are. They're different. They're smarter.
Anyway, if you're wondering where I locate myself in this framework, as someone who is clearly a tumblr user myself: I think "intelligence," as we discuss it within modern western society is pretty much fake, and more accurately reflects class than learning or problem solving, most of the time. It's a proxy for access to education at best. INT is a fake character creation stat.
