Alena Analeigh Wicker is just 13 and she was recently accepted into the University of #Alabama's Heersink School of Medicine for 2024. She was accepted a year after graduating high school. Wicker is currently a student at both #ArizonaState University and #Oakwood University. She is simultaneously earning two separate undergraduate degrees in biological sciences. "What is age?" Wicker said. "You're not too young to do anything. I feel like I have proven to myself that I can do anything that I put my heart and mind to." She was 3 years old when her mother, Daphne McQuarter, started noticing that she wasn't a typical #toddler. "Alena was gifted," McQuarter told the Post. "It was just how she did things and how advanced she was. She was reading chapter books." School has always been easy for Wicker, so when high school proved boring, she enrolled in #college classes. "I was bored," she told the newspaper. "The high school work was so easy for me that I ended up graduating from high school at 12 years old." Wicker, who was #NASA's youngest intern in the summer of 2021, has always been interested in STEM (science, #technology, engineering, and math). Less than two years ago she founded #BrownSTEMGirl, an organization aimed at providing opportunities for girls of color interested in exploring careers in #STEM. Despite her initial interest in #engineering, she ultimately decided to pursue #medicine in order to help people in underrepresented communities that lack health care. "It feels amazing to be able to create a path for girls that look like me," Alena said. "It doesn't matter how old you are. You can do it. Don't let anybody tell you no." 👩🏾‍⚕️ Follow Her: @TheBrownStemGirl Sources: TheWashingtonPost, People, AtlantaBlackStar 📸 DLacyPhotography Follow Us @wonderwombman @wonderwombman2 #wonderwombman https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg8eowmg2NN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Reposted from @b_a_morgan ・・・ We will not allow @walmart to monetize a day of commemoration of our enslaved ancestors! @wonderwombman @wonderwombman2 ————————- (CNN) #Walmart apologizes for selling #Juneteenth ice cream Walmart's attempt to commemorate Juneteenth with a new ice cream didn't go over so well. The company is apologizing for selling "Celebration Edition: Juneteenth Ice Cream," under its Great Value label. The branding sparked a backlash with many people on social media. "Share and celebrate African-American culture, emancipation and enduring hope," the label on the red velvet-flavored ice cream read. statement. "However, we received feedback that a few items caused concern for some of our customers and we sincerely apologize. We are reviewing our assortment and will remove items as appropriate." Other Juneteenth-themed items that appear to be on sale include party plates, according to a tweet. One critic on Twitter said the ice cream highlighted why it's "important to have diverse voices at the table when making strategic business decisions. When you don't, you end up making costly, foolish mistakes," the tweet said. Others on Twitter are encouraging shoppers to buy Black-owned Creamalicious Ice Cream from Target. CNN affiliate WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina, found the Juneteenth ice cream at a local store. However when a reporter tried to buy it, it was "unavailable for purchase." A store employee told the channel that they are "throwing the ice cream out." Juneteenth, on June 19, is now a federal holiday after President Joe Biden signed a bill last year. It's the oldest US celebration of the end of slavery, marking the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, #Texas, and informed residents that the Civil War was over and slavery abolished. African-Americans and others have long marked the anniversary much like the Fourth of July, with parties, picnics and gatherings of family and friends. Reposted from @wonderwombman "The first #Blackwoman to win a gold medal in wrestling for the U.S. is using her prize money to invest in her mom’s food truck business. After making history at the #Tokyo Olympics, #Houston native Tamyrae Mensah-Stock shared her plans to use the $37,500 she received to buy a food truck for her mother, ABC 7 #Chicago reports." “I WANTED TO GIVE MY MOM $30,000 TO GET A FOOD TRUCK. IT’S HER DREAM,” SHE SAID. “I TOLD HER FIVE YEARS AGO, ‘I’LL GET YOU YOUR FOOD TRUCK, BUT YOU GOTTA BE RESPONSIBLE.’ SHE’S LIKE ‘THANK YOU, BABY’…SO MY MOM’S GETTING HER FOOD TRUCK!” "Her mom will now be the owner of a food truck she plans to call “The Lady Bug.” Mensah-Stock also gave her mom’s future business a shoutout adding how good her food tastes. “She’s gonna have her little cooking business. She can cook really, really, really well—barbecue,” she added. “I don’t eat it ‘cause I’m a pescatarian now.” Mensah-Stock’s victory made her only the second American woman to ever win #Olympic gold in #wrestling after beating #Nigeria’s Blessing Oborududu 4-1, Chron reports. The pro athlete grew up in #Katy, #Texas, wrestling at #MortonRanch High School, where she was a star player, having won two state championships. Her success in wrestling didn’t come without her own personal struggles. Mensah-Stock almost walked away from the sport after losing her father in a car crash while he was driving home from one of her wrestling tournaments in 2009. “My mom, my aunt, my twin sister, my little sister, my grandma and my little cousins are all in #Florida now watching at 6 a.m. cheering me on, and my husband woke up really early to watch me,” Mensah-Scott told NBC Sports. “It means the world knowing they’re watching and that’s all the support I needed.” This is as sweet as it gets. This man must NOT DIE!!! Posted @withrepost • @wonderwombman There is a growing movement to #FreeRodneyReed before he’s executed this month. Rodney Reed, who is scheduled to be executed later this month, has spent the past two decades on death row for a murder he says he did not commit. Now, a new witness has come forward claiming that it was the victim’s fiancé, a former police officer, who killed the woman, not Reed. The new information has shed light on what many criminal justice advocates say is a case of another black man caught up in a system that was stacked against him. On October 30, Reed’s lawyers and the Innocence Project, a nonprofit organization for criminal justice reform, filed an application for clemency with the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles following the sworn affidavit of Arthur Snow, who says ex-officer Jimmy Fennell confessed to the murder of Stacy Stites when the two men were in prison together. In addition to Snow’s testimony, several other witnesses have come forward with similar stories around Fennell and his disdain for his fiancé, who he suspected was sleeping with a black man behind his back. Reed has long admitted to having been in a romantic relationship with Stites, but at the time of the trial, no witness would corroborate the affair. Now, Stites’s cousin and a former coworker have both said the two were involved, according to the Innocence Project. The organization also claims that there were forensic problems with the investigation and points out that Reed was convicted by an all-white jury. Even though the urgency of Reed’s case continues to spread, it remains to be seen if advocates and celebrities have the power to sway Abbott. Reed’s execution is now only three weeks away. #PRESSPLAY: Twyanna Williams, a 65-year old grandmother from Philadelphia, has finally graduated from high school after putting her education off for several years due to financial reasons. What’s more, is she was honored as the class #valedictorian! When she was a teen, Williams didn’t have a chance to continue high school since her parents separated. She had to take jobs to help the family financially. “I felt sad for myself for coming out of school and seeing my friends graduating but I was working,” Williams told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “My focus was on surviving.” She had to work at local fast-food restaurants, hospitals, and hotels. But she didn’t forget her dream of going back to school to earn a high school diploma, especially whenever she had to attend the graduation ceremonies of her 2 children and 4 grandchildren. “Everyone deserves a high school diploma,” she said. “The older I got, the more I wanted it.” Last year, Williams had the opportunity to return to school through the Educational Options Programs in #Philadelphia, which allows older students to complete credits to receive a high school diploma. Most recently, she finished the program and became one of the two valedictorians in her category B class of returning students ages 40 and over at South Philadelphia High School. Segregation in the South, 1956 Photographer Gordon Parks In the wake of the 1955 bus boycott in Montgomery, Life asked Parks to go to Alabama and document the racial tensions entrenched there. He would compare his findings with his own troubled childhood in Fort Scott, Kansas, and with the relatively progressive and integrated life he had enjoyed in Europe. Over the course of several weeks, Parks and Yette photographed the family at home and at work; at night, the two men slept on the Causeys’ front porch. http://www.gordonparksfoundation.org/archive/segregation-in-the-south-1956 #gordonparks #gordonparksfoundation #wonderwombman #blackexcellence #blackhistory #blackhistory365 #blackmen #blackwomen #blacklove #america #us #unitedstates #downsouth #south #uk #unitedkingdom #africa #segregation #racism #hatred #fearofgod #fear #power #money #history https://www.instagram.com/p/B1pcTWpDA7r/?igshid=kwrjm9jzuzga

A #Minnesota woman by the name of Diana Armstrong recently broke the #GuinnessWorldRecord for the longest fingernails on a pair of hands and longest #fingernails on a pair of hands ever. All combined, Armstrong carries 42 feet and 10.4 inches worth of nail as of March 13, 2022. The combined length measures longer than a typical yellow school bus. The 63-year-old #grandmother shares that she’s been growing her nails for over 25 years. “I was really shocked about it because to me, I didn’t think they were that long. But to other people they were long. But I didn’t think so at the time.” She says she was shocked to receive the call and even believed she was being #pranked. “I thought someone was playing a joke on me, I really did, so I hung up on them. Then two or three days later, I told my daughter about it, she said ‘Mom you should take their phone call’.” Armstrong said it takes 24 bottles of #nailpolish and two whole days for her grandchildren to get through painting her nails one time a year. According to the book of #WorldRecords, her right thumb comes in as the longest nail, at 4 feet and 6.7 inches, while the shortest is her left pinky nail, which measures 3 feet and 7 inches. The Minnesota woman explained that she has a #sentimental connection to the nails, sharing that her 16-year-old daughter Latisha used to always do them for her before she passed away in her sleep from an asthma attack in 1997. Now, she keeps them to remember and honor Latisha. “Anytime I thought about cutting them off, it gave me chills like I’m going through that grief all over again. I didn’t want to go through that again, so I just kept them. It’s like keeping her close to me,” Armstrong said. “When I started growing them, it wasn’t to be in the Guinness Book Of World Records,” she said. “Now since I am, I tell people, you shouldn’t judge people because you don’t know what people have gone through.” #Source: fox9, blackenterprise #Follow Us: @wonderwombman @wonderwombman2 #wonderwombman https://www.instagram.com/p/ChBGrWag1z1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Reposted from @wonderwombman Joe Ligon was just 15 when he joined a pack of drunk teenagers on a robbery and assault spree that left two people dead and six others stabbed. Illiterate and poor, Ligon pled guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, though he long claimed he didn’t take part in the murders. He received a life sentence in 1953. Last week, after 68 years behind bars, the 83-year-old Ligon walked out of a Pennsylvania prison a free man, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. His sentence was reduced to 35 years to life in 2017, after the Supreme Court ruled that automatic life terms for kids are cruel and unusual. But unlike fellow inmates who rushed to seek parole after that ruling, Ligon didn’t want to remain monitored after he got out. “I like to be free,” he told the paper. “With parole, you got to see the parole people every so often. You can’t leave the city without permission from parole. That’s part of freedom for me.” Ligon and Bradley Bridge, a lawyer with the Defender Association of Philadelphia who represented Ligon since 2006, fought for his outright release for three more years and won, with a judge ordering his release last November. After leaving the lockup, Ligon saw a Philadelphia transformed while he was behind bars. “I’m looking at all the tall buildings,” he said. “This is all new to me. This never existed.” https://nypost.com/2021/02/13/nations-oldest-juvenile-lifer-released-after-68-years/ #goldiloczpromotions #730dips #730dipsdjs #730dipsdivas #news #979DAPLUGGRADIO #hiphop #blog ~Goldi~ 2022 https://www.instagram.com/p/CaDBLCiFqfy/?utm_medium=tumblr

Black women are indomitable!! Posted @withregram • @notorious_fal The resiliency of Black women. #NeverForget Posted @withregram • @wonderwombman Genelle Guzman-McMillan was the last person found alive in the rubble of the World Trade Center. She went to work on September 11, 2001 on the 64th floor. When the towers came down she was buried for 27 hours, longer than any other person. Her story should have been included in the World Trade Center Movie released in 2006. SHE IS STILL ALIVE TODAY!! For Genelle Guzman-McMillan, the 9/11 anniversary brings back especially painful memories. Guzman-McMillan was the last person to be pulled out of the rubble of the twin towers alive. In a recent interview with Doug McKelway, Ms Guzman-McMillan was the last person pulled alive from the wreckage of the Twin Towers, 27 hours after the building collapsed on top of her. On that fateful Tuesday, she was working as an assistant secretary at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey whose offices were on the 64th floor of Tower 1. The North Tower of the World Trade Center. About an hour after hijackers flew a plane into the North Tower of the #WorldTradeCenter 30 floors above her office, Ms Guzman-McMillan and her colleagues decided to escape down the stairs. The tower collapsed as they reached the 13th floor. Ms Guzman-McMillan lay buried for over a day; she says it felt "like forever". She describes how her faith has given her strength and resolve in the aftermath of that unspeakable horror. #GenelleGuzmanMcMillan #TrinidadAndTobago #Sayhername #Blackhistory #thestufftheywonttellyou #September11th #TwentyYearLater #blackwithnochaser https://www.instagram.com/p/CTsVa96PYuM/?utm_medium=tumblr
