Also re: pokemon and it's changes throughout the years, I am So Incredibly Conflicted about the changes the Switch games have made to encounters.

For context: Gens 1-7 only feature random encounters (Static encounters are not relevant to this post, and are intentionally left out) You walk through tall grass, a Pokémon jumps out at you, and you have a fight. You do not see any of the pokemon before you encounter. (Again, excluding stuff like the Shaking Tails encounters in ORAS)

In Gen 8, they changed it to a mix of random encounters, and overworld pokemon. There are pokemon walking around that you can see and encounter and know exactly what it is, but there is still random encounters when walking through the grass.

And now, in PLA and Gen 9, we have made a full transition to ONLY overworld encounters. There is no more grass that hides random encounters (although MAN some of those tiny pokemon love to hide in terrain details and jumpscare you when you step on them)

Which... with the death of Random Encouters is the death of Nuzlocke. The entire origin of Nuzlocke is based around forcing you to use Pokémon you would normally skip over! Whatever Pokémon the random encounter table gives you is what you get, and you gotta make the best of it! That... really isn't possible anymore. Sure you CAN do stuff like... pull up a spreadsheet of all the encounters on a route, and randomize which one you get, and have to go catch one... but that's not really in the spirit of it. It loses the surprise of you nervously walking through the grass, fingers crossed, hoping for the best. Not to mention the fact that the border between routes is far less defined now, and random trainers no longer blocking the path. Nuzlockes are probably the single most popular way to play Pokémon, and it's now just... not possible to do.

THAT SAID, I've been going through all the old games, with the goal of trying to collect a Pokémon with every origin mark possible (I'll make another post about that later), but in short it means completing the Pokédex in every single game since Gen 5.

AND LET ME TELL YOU. COMPLETING THE SWITCH GAMES WAS QUICK AND PAINLESS.

GOING BACK TO GAMES WITH RANDOM ENCOUNTERS TRYING TO HUNT DOWN POKEMON WITH 1% ENCOUNTER RATES? FUCK THAT. THIS FUCKING SUCKS MAN. WHY DID WE EVER PUT UP WITH THIS SHIT? I have tasted the privilege of... just fucking Looking at a crowd of Pokémon, instead of TEDIOUSLY JUMPING IN AND OUT OF BATTLE OVER AND OVER TRYING TO GET ONE SPECIFIC POKEMON.

Shiny hunting is more popular now than its every been, specifically BECAUSE you can look at a dozen pokemon at once, go "Nope, not shiny" and look for more. It's no surprise that Gen 9 is the first time many long time veteran players have actually seen their first ever Full Odds Wild Shiny! You are 'encountering' DOZENS of times as many pokemon at once, and it is GREAT for both immersion and gameplay, and it's pretty hard to go back!

I don't really have a point to all this. Just... venting about the conflicting feelings I have about how the most popular way to play pokemon is dead, but that in its place, so many other gameplay styles are becoming far more accessible.

Can't even begin to express how much I think everyone should try a randomizer (nuzlocke if you're confident enough!) at least once.

I know some people don't like them because they think it feels silly to be able to change the balance of the game in such a big way, but it's a great way to force yourself to use pokemon you would've never considered before, and gives you a lot of new love and appreciation that you didn't expect!

There's so many pokemon I gained new appreciation for due to randomizers, and probably wouldn't have without them 😭

Same applies to wonderlockes which are a great alternative if you don't have a way of randomising the game (or want something at a lower difficulty level) - you can just wonder/surprise trade your encounter away each route and accept whatever you get traded back as your encounter :)

Came back to my Y wonderlocke today! Been getting a bit careless as I've been making my way to Olympia and had some close calls, including in the fight where I didn't realize her slowking had power gem, but never punished! Melody survived!!!

Chapter 1-

I have started playing Pokémon Violet as a Wonderlocke!

Tonight on stream I completed the first two gym badges and titan battles!

We did lose 3 Pokémon tonight… Who Dat Buoy the Buizel, Goji the Frigibax, and Dumbo the Phanpy…

Was doing a wonderlocke and wiped to iona since somehow the electric gym leader counters ground types really hard, but never the less I must move on. I'm sure i shall go through many characters doing this cause I'm really bad at pokemon but the first name on the hall of deaths is mavrick who shall forever serve as a reminder of how I spelt maverick wrong

I have realized I need concrete rules to do this properly

First catch 2 pokemon in everywhere area since can't remember where I've been for the life of me

Second no healing pokemon that won't obey me since If I do I win every fight

Third trade away duplicates

Finally kill all shinys

trying to vaguely team build for scarlet in my head and its so hard bc idk what starter to pick that wouldnt clash with the rest of my team. might not use any of them tbh and just use ogerpon armarouge and palafin
