The Grace Van Dien situation goes to show how fandom is an echo chamber where anyone will believe anything without a shred of evidence simply because the subject matter is armed to the teeth with buzzwords.
Initially, a poster on twitter was calling her a regular white girl and therefor she didn’t have to care about her which, whatever, you’re right, you don’t have to care about anyone - but when people began defending Grace from the subsequent accusations (like she’s misgendered people in her discord - all the screenshots were of other people and not one of her) that she’s been racist or homophobic (proven to be doctored images of her old tumblr) and that her character was underage so anyone who likes the hellcheer ship is a predator, which was also disproven repeatedly and by Grace herself first and foremost - the accusations of racism started to flood in, long before Grace even posted passively about their initial comment (she simply said she wasn’t regular and that Woki, her cat, said so) and that derailed into a conversation about Grace allegedly sending “racists” after OP because she is a black woman.
First, people were already angry at her for what she said about Grace long before Grace caught wind of it, Grace never named names, didn’t post screenshots or engage with it directly. All she did was disagree with someone’s opinion of her, on an entirely different social media platform.
Y’all made it about race and slung accusations around without a single shred of evidence. There has been zero proof of threats nor harassment rooted in bigotry, or that Grace had anything to do with it.
Nevermind the white girl capitalizing off of it as some kind of white savior who went after Grace specifically for clout. Because now that y’all are getting dragged to hell and back, being called out for lack of evidence to substantiate hateful claims, it’s suddenly “let’s just move on” or “you’re all doing too much” if you genuinely believed that someone launched a racially motivated hate campaign … and you just give up? It was never about that. You knew that no one would want to combat the argument because crying wolf garners no sympathy.
All she’s done is be herself and have fun with fandom, and in the same fashion as so much bullshit before, all the virulent misogyny for a potential female love interest is deflected onto the actress who plays her. Same happened in the Loki fandom with Sophia. In Star Wars with KMT. Star Trek with Zoe. Supernatural with Every Single Woman. Call it wherever you want but the root cause is the same.
And just know, if yall actually showed us people being racist? Not only would they be held accountable but we’d rake them over coals. And if yall actually got hate, you’d have 10,000 screenshots and be QTing them all over the place since y’all are clearly capable of doing so.
