labyrinth!!

Theseus comes home and brings the labyrinth with him.

When he’s wandering the streets of Athens his hand trails along the smooth familiar stones and feels, remembering, rougher ones, the unfinished rock that made the maze’s walls; and he shudders, feeling hot breath on his ears and the weight of the bull heaving on his back.

He sits in the council and closes his eyes, wishingfor the clarity he had in the labyrinth: kill the Minotaur. Get out. Get home. Now he’s home and he’s lost, with no hope of rescue from poor abandoned Ariadne, no clue to follow, only endless strings of orators’ words, twisting and snarling, losing him wholly.

Theseus wakes at night. The labyrinth darkens his eyes.
