silly hcs for riders + their dragons

whenever hiccup sketches in a notebook he has to find toothless a stick so he can scribble in the dirt with him

toothless makes biscuits like a cat when he's happy & hiccup says toothless is the best bread making viking on berk <3

astrid will sometimes play with stormfly by hiding in her blindspot in front of her nose & basically play a version of peek-a-boo, which stormfly LOVES

stormfly will chase her own tail like a silly billy & it makes astrid laugh, without fail, every single time <3

snotlout makes sure hookfang's claws & talons are properly sharpened & trimmed always!! & maybe he gives himself a matching mani-pedi!!! it's to stay healthy!!!

hookfang actually enjoys splashing in puddles when it rains & he always nudges snotlout out the door so they can go splash together <3

we know fishlegs is particular about the types of rocks he gives meatlug for her to eat, but sometimes he'll make mosaics using the rocks he has set aside and likes seeing which parts meatlug will eat first

meatlug's different snorts & snuffs are similar to a bulldog & she sounds different depending on what she wants to try & say!! fishlegs def understands her <3

despite her vocal distaste, ruffnut doesn't actually hate belch, & when tuff isn't looking she'll pass a piece of food to barf AND belch

barf likes to snake his head around ruffnut & lift her off the ground, essentially his version of cuddling & she loves it <3

tuffnut sometimes tries to have one foot on barf & one on belch, & they'll try their best to help him with his goal, but they're pretty wiggley

belch will spark when tuffnut specifically gives him rubs right where his head meets his neck, under his chin, & tuff enjoys keeping that between him & belch <3

heather has a special oil to clean windshear's metallic scales!! she even has it smell like herbs, which windshear surprisingly enjoys!!

windshear likes to run her tail up & down her spines on her back & listen to the sounds it makes. it's smth she'll only do when she's fully alone or with heather, & heather will sometimes come up with a little tune to go with <3

dagur has both shattermaster & sleuther & dagur is sooo happy they both get along. dagur jokes & says they're his sons & they're brothers

shattermaster & sleuther will curl up & nap together, & sometimes dagur will flop down on top of them & nap top <3

for eret, skullcrusher took a lot of getting used to, but he completely melted the first time he woke up & saw skullcrusher resting his giant head at the end of his bed with big eyes, begging for breakfast

skullcrusher leans on eret with his head, which means he wants eret to kneel down & bump his head onto skullcrusher's, which for eret was a sign of affection for his tribe, & it makes them both happy <3

Snoggletog

The second Snoggletog is on the New Berk, which is celebrated with dragons... And with old friends! Viggo, Heather and Dagur decided to visit the riders at the festivities, but they were not the only ones who arrived. Stormfly, Windshear and Marauder arrived with Toothless and Night Lights to see old friends. And Zephyr and Nuffink have found new friends - Vikar and Sigrun Grimborn (the Viggo and Heather kids) Happy New Year and Merry Christmas to all of you!

Highlights from "Sins of the Past"

Ok so first off, Snotlout and Heather were great in this episode. Snotlout once again showed his growing leadership skills, and Heather was a great balance of being badass while also showing a lot of vulnerability.

I love Dagur as a protective brother (even if he's a bit...shall we say overzealous at times). This is also the episode where Trader Johann turns out to be Traitor Johann. Uh...I've talked about my opinions on this before, so I'll avoid the rant. But suffice it to say, I'm not a fan of this twist for a variety of reasons.

Also: I CANNOT BELIEVE THE LENS WAS ON HER BELT THERE WHOLE TIME AND I NEVER NOTICED

Anyway, let's get to the screenshots.

"My father doesn't have a hook." Heather is so cool.

Krogan!!! I only vaguely remember him from my first time watching (especially because I didn't watch all the way to the end) but I'm loving him more with every episode. Every time he pops up I'm like "what an asshole" (affectionately)

Dagur terrorizing people in his search for Heather was just so...Dagur. Yes he's a good guy now, but that wild side's still in there. And poor Hiccup's just trying to keep it together.

Hiccup trying to hold Dagur back from hurting someone is soooo good. I love that he has to do this with both Astrid and Dagur. Gods help him if they try to fight each other.

I'm sorry but there is something so funny about Snotlout making this cute, sad little face while stripped of most his clothes, wearing a belt made of rope, and sporting some extreme tan lines.

I love them!!!

Snotlout coined Hiccstrid (in the show) while also being a Hiccstrid hater. He contains multitudes.

I want them to kiss. And then have a knife fight.

Rewatched "To Heather Or Not To Heather" and find myself thinking about the "Have Dragon Will Travel" two-parter instead. Because Windshear was perfectly fine around the Riders and the dragons in those episodes, clearly enough for Heather to rope the Dragon Riders (minus Hiccup and Toothless) into an attempt on Dagur's lifeto capture Dagur.

But then suddenly in "To Heather Or Not To Heather," Windshear seems to tolerate the Riders, but absolutely cannot stand the other dragons and even a simple glance in her direction is enough to provoke her fight or flight response.

Heather and Fishlegs figure out Windshear is so reactive because she wants to protect her rider from the other Dragon Riders, but they never discuss the reason why Windshear is suddenly so reactive when she used to be completely fine in the past.

And that is potentiall because of the weeks (months?) Heather spent undercover with the Dragon Hunters. Not only was Windshear likely used to capture other dragons (so already fighting dragons and protecting Heather from them) but she also needed to fight the Dragon Riders, protect Heather, and probably got hurt in the process leading to Windshear's aggression her first time back on the Edge since Heather's undercover mission.

EDIT:

Also, Heather is nervous the entire time she's around Windshear. She's fine and acts like herself when she's around the Riders, but once Windshear is there, she's nervous. Windshear probably picked up on that as well.

Modern AU Heather and... Windshear?:D

The idea of the art was absolutely random.. I just was inspired by the beautiful photos of the atmospheric rooms and wanted to draw some HTTYD character in the modren AU theme with such a background:>

The idea of adding Windshear was also pretty random)) Perhaps the ferret reminded me of Razorwhip with its oblong body shape and similar paw structure.. Also, ferrets can be gray and they're predators in nature)) In general, I didn't think much about the modern incarnation of Windshear, I just wanted to draw something cute, so she's a ferret here))

Btw, if you have any other suggestions what animal Windshear could be, feel free to share them!

In “Have Dragon Will Travel Part 1” we learn that Razorwhips have poisonous tears. This fact is never revisited and I think this is something we just glossed over. Like what? That’s so random for them not to use ever again.

400 Follower Milestone

Back again with my monthly post, vikings. A lotta things happened over the month, so this got put on hold for a while. I'm going to learn my lesson and start planning more thoroughly ahead. 😅

I didn't know it until now, but apparently I become aimless and distraught when I go too long without so much as scribbling a Dragons character. (/s) I'm really hoping to draw more consistently next year, even if that turns out to mean a quick Vigster doodle every other week.

About the piece itself—I learned to paint clouds! I'm currently waiting for the timelapse to export just so I can count how many times I erased everything and started over. They turned out pretty sweet, all things considered! Hiccup and Heather's silhouettes are my favorite part by far, though. (Extra note: my computer didn't run as horribly this time! Had to give up on preserving my sketch layers, but it's still a win.)

FanFriday #3: Why are these pairs so rare?

Ah! Happy (belated) third FanFriday, folks. How’s your week been? Mine’s been ordinary, but okay!

This week was tricky. Really tricky. The theme was meant to be “the best of the riders and their dragons”, with focus solely on Astrid, Fishlegs, and the twins with each of their dragons respectively.

The results felt… barbarically slim, actually.

This week’s post will include more than just fic recommendations under the cut.

This image seems accurate. Not only to canon itself, but also in the fandom. Toothless and Hiccup at the forefront and the others in the back.

At the time of this post (8/10/23) the numbers for the tags I tried exploring (otp: true, English) are as follows:

Astrid & Stormfly – 2 (1 ongoing)

Fishlegs & Meatlug – 0

Barf & Belch & Ruffnut & Tuffnut – 0

Additionally,

Heather & Windshear – 2 (1 incorrectly tagged)

Dagur & Shattermaster – 0

Dagur & Sleuther – 0

Spitelout & Kingstail – 0

Gustav & Fanghook – 0

Stoick the Vast & Skullcrusher – 1

And the results for other ships continue as such.

As a fic writer myself, I understand that most of the inspiration for things will tend to come from Hiccup and Toothless, as the MCs, and Hookfang and Snotlout because… well, it’s Hookfang and Snotlout. Doesn’t get much more inspirational than that.

But still, the fact that other dragon-rider duos have nothing (nothing that at least gives some focus to the tag which just seems to be bunched in with others) is quite astonishing. By statistics alone, they’re each considered to be a rarepair.

How peculiar.

And, so, I implore you all to take a step back and perhaps write that fic you wanted to write. Meatlug and Fishlegs? Twins and Barf & Belch? Doesn’t matter – the fandom’s side of the archive is in desperate need for it. All of it.

And with that, I’ll shut it and continue with this week’s scarce selection:

When Sleep Won’t Come by AHeartForStories — This fic is the only otp: true, Stormfly & Astrid result that was complete. The other, currently left incomplete, is in my marked for later. That being said, it’s very strange that this is the case. Though just because it appears to be the only result for this pair doesn’t make the scenario any less wonderful. Astrid has a nightmare and seeks comfort from Stormfly: simple, sweet. What a delightful read.

Please by AHeartForStories — This author seems to pump out so many fics, it seems, that they must be doing half the work for us, and I applaud them, because the ones that I have read, personally, are quite wrenching of emotion. This is a good example – this is one of two Heather and Windshear fics that had appeared in the search results I’d tried; one is incorrectly tagged (as otp: true, Heather & Windshear – it’s by far more Dagur & Heather based, the former duo hardly get much focus). In this fic, Heather stands during a heartbreaking performance as Ryker abuses Windshear to get to her. The end is relieving, and for a short, angsty one-shot with these guys I’d definitely point you in this fic’s direction!

Nothing Else Matters by sarahenany — This fic for some reason passed by my radar for the first FanFriday, but it’s a great fic (plus it helps pad out the list a bit to the three-fic minimum). It takes place during that disappointingly cut scene where Hookfang is struck with lightning in season six. It’s a “hidden scene”-type fic where we see Snotlout tend to Hookfang when he’s been downed. It’s a dazzling gem of a choice for these two, because they are so sweet as is. Definitely in my Top 10 so far.
