i'm sort of enjoying the influx of new people, but feel like there are a few tips i've seen left out of many welcome-to-tungle posts, so:
unlike most platforms, it's hard to tell who's following you on tumblr! if you have even a moderate amount of activity, it's super easy to miss the notification, and the only other way to tell if someone is following you is to go manually search your followers. sometimes this is a blessing, sometimes this is a curse. (mostly a blessing, tho.)
if you're a writer or a podcaster or an artist or whatever, put that info somewhere obvious! put it in your header, even if it's just "i wrote this thing!" i know you make cool stuff, but some of y'all're making it real hard for people to find out that you make cool stuff.
embrace tags as commentary. if you're adding substantive content to the post, sure, add it to the post, i guess. if it's a post about what you have for breakfast, though, or a meme about which [whatever] are you, just throw it in the tags.
if someone added stuff to a post that you don't agree with, or that isn't adding anything to the post, it's fine to fish around in the notes to find a version that doesn't have that addition.
back to tags. i literally can't overstate how much we love tags here. metacommentary on the post? throwaway comments? vaguely related anecdote? put it in the tags! tags are so much a part of tumblr's conversations that the options for filtering reblog notifications are "reblogs with comment" and "reblogs without comment"—and if you select "reblogs with comment", you'll still get the ones that have had tags added.
side note that you can filter your activity feed, which is where you can see how people are interacting with your posts. i personally try not to engage with mine—not my business—but if you want to look at a specific thing, like who's followed you recently, or replies on your posts, hit the little filter button above the feed and you can be very specific about the types of activity that you want to see.
nope, sorry, i'm still talking about tags. bonus to embracing tags as commentary: you can say whatever weird shit you want! tags are delightfully ephemeral. you want to search the tags? best of luck! you probably cannot. choose to view this as a feature, not a bug.
sometimes your tags pass peer review, as we say, and someone will screenshot or copy them and add them to the post. this is a compliment.
the queue function is the unsung hero of this website. are you posting in real time? are you posting from a queue? are you mixing it up and doing both at once? who can say? congrats, you're ✨mysterious✨!
another important function of the queue is that helps you make *your* blorbos into *our* blorbos. twenty-seven untagged posts about your new hyperfixation in two hours is the soul killer, the thing that makes your followers super tired of even hearing about it. the exact same twenty-seven untagged posts spread out over the course of a day, though, scattered among other posts like seeds on the wind, are somehow charming—compelling, even. wow, that sad wet cat of a man *does* seem awfully sad. i wonder what terrible thing has happened to him!
anyhow, these aren't rules and i'm not the boss of you, but if you were looking for unsolicited advice from a gremlin who's been on tumblr for way, way too long, now you have it.

do you honestly think a couple hundred people At Most are fully capable of effectively moderating, last i checked statistics, around 13 million posts per day? 13,000,000??? per day???
assuming even a moderation-only staff of 200 people working every single day (which tumblr def does not have--that one leaked memo said they had ~200 fulltime employees *total* before the recent downsizing, not all of which are moderation), that works out to around ~65k posts per person per day.
do you have time to review more than 65k posts every day? of course not. even with a filter algorithm (100% essential btw, because staff should not be forced to comb every single post for shit like literal actual csem, never mind hate speech and gore posted in popular tags as part of a 4chan raid or whatever) that's basically impossible. and you NEED to manually review posts for shit like hate speech, because overly-aggressive filtering is more likely to fuck over people explaining dogwhistles to look out for than, y'know, actual hate speech/symbols
also, sorry you came from the dimension where staff loves to play flag-the-trans-posts, but in this dimension that's a combination of:
- necessary algorithm (reasons listed above) having been trained pretty fuckily during the Verizon occupation, and
- the (usually offsite-organized) terf groups who stalk and mass flag trans people, especially popular ones, and remake accounts to keep doing it when they get blocked (which is the unfortunate tradeoff of an easy account sign-up process)
the vast majority of maliciously flagged trans posts i've seen get unflagged within a few weeks. yes, that sucks to wait on, but it's also a reasonable time frame when one considers the ratio of staff to staff-tasks-per-day. check the notes on any post about a flagged selfie or trans art older than abt 2 weeks; chances are good you'll see the humans blog, or another staffer, apologizing for the delay.
disclaimer: im trans and am not/have never been employed by tungl dot hell, and i also take issue with some of their decisions, but at this point i'm a lot more worried abt the user-led conspiracy about staff being made entirely of cryptoterfs (despite multiple accounts from current and former staffers, plus their own published info, showing tumblr has more queer people on board than the average socmed/tech company by a significant margin) who are supposedly paid to sit there and maliciously flag us icky trans users for funsies and enrichment all day
tl;dr y'all are on that reverse gaylor shit. stop it.

not quite to the date (yet) but ten years ago i posted a fic that is somehow still sitting on the front page of results by kudos and by bookmarks for the most popular ship in the most popular fandom on AO3 and i still don't know how that happened.
like... really genuinely truly i don't know what kind of WILD perfect-storm-level shit was going on to make this happen. the original post got eleven whole notes here on tungle (yeah i checked lmao). i am not, actually, a very Doing Numbers blogger or writer, nor had i ever been, nor will i ever be. as far as i know, there wasn't any wildass six degrees of separation thing that happened where someone very Doing Numbers made it Do Numbers. i didn't "advertise" it or anything (ppl who make fic graphics and have a posting/rbing/rting schedule.. i could never lmao), i didn't post it on every site known to man, i didn't tag it to hell, i didn't really do anything. it just fucking happened. and it's still happening!!! and i am just so fucking baffled. how did this happen. why are there people making tiktoks about this fic in the year of our lord 2022. how??????
i have a lot of very complicated feelings about this fic, with a lot of them boiling down to just, like, brain chemicals being very stupid, and i know that logically it's just brain chemicals gone bad! but it's still hard to shake ten (10!) years of feeling like my growth in writing is being constantly undercut by this thing that's created its own gravity well to keep sucking in kudos and comments when just about everything i've written since has been Better™ (which again, logically, i know is untrue -- i write for fandoms now that are relatively VERY small lol so of course nothing is ever going to Do Numbers again like this)
this fic was something i wrote after a very difficult-to-process series of events, so it was complete and utter wish fulfillment and it felt so good to write. the flip side of this, which in retrospect really soured the fic for me, is that i tried my damndest to live out the life i wrote in this fic. i went to grad school for linguistics two years later and TA'd, Just Like The Fic. it was supposed to be great! and those turned out to be the two most miserable years of my life. maybe not specifically because i was trying to live a daydream, but that disparity didn't help (though my friends certainly did). so in a way, aeiw is this image of a failed dream -- i'm not in linguistics as a field, not even remotely, and i likely never will be; i don't want to ever go back to academia, even though i will likely need to get another masters (derogatory) in my current field at some point.
BUT. i promised that this is not a negative post so i will pivot here to say very genuinely that i am so, so grateful to all the friendships and good times this fic has brought me. thank you to all the people i met because of this fic or while writing it. thank you to everyone who's gotten to know me for totally different reasons/fandoms/etc and then been like WAIT A SECOND. (it's so funny, every time.) thank you to everyone who's ever left kudos and said a kind word. (i still get kudos emails nearly every day just for this fic.)
and thank you to the incredibly beautiful personal anecdotes people have left on this fic, holy shit. i have a folder in my email for those specifically. here are some excerpts from comments that made me tear up:

i'm often very unserious while blogging on tungle dot hell. and some of the way less unserious posts could seem more unserious than intended to people who know certain parts of my lore. after becoming tungle mewchuals with some people who know those parts of lore, i started occasionally putting additional explanations in tags of the less unserious posts cuz i'm worried they'll be interpreted as more unserious.
and like. i could disclose that lore here instead of occasionally making silly references to it. but then i'd need to be less unserious about my menwtol smeeness and my childhood trauma and shit, cuz im so scare someone will assume i'm being unserious because the situation is unserious. idk if this makes any sense

✯ plots or memes: either or — i like to send out a lot of memes, but that’s mainly because of how long it can take for me to reply to longer things ( mainly because of my shitty work schedule ), but i love plotting. i’ll plot out an entire novel with you before ever putting anything ic on the dash between our muses. it just be like that all the time sometimes. expect me in your ims twelve hours out of the day if we’re plotting, i don’t shut up.

✯ best time to write: when i’m on the verge of sleep for some reason. but also whenever i’m just not at work which is.......hardly ever, but we out here.
✯ are you like your muse(s): other than the fact that i own a pair of cowboy boots and a wide brimmed hat, absolutely not. but i reckon that’s a good thing, considering he’s an ex-gang member with a very high dollar bounty on his head.

@flamingplay tagged me in this little ask game and despite using tumblr for like 9 years i've never actually been tagged in one of these before so i'm doing it <3
1. Are you named after anyone? my tungle name is danny which (unfortunately) comes from a the 1975 song, but also a play i read a couple years ago called the long road by shelagh stephenson. my real name did not come from anybody in particular!!
2. When was the last time you cried? saturday, i was thinking about my dad :/ but i was also making stir fry and found a bone in it so that tipped me over the edge
3. Do you have kids? i am a baby do i count??
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? with certain people!! some people i'm very dry with, others i am more sincere, depends on our relationship!
5. What sports do you play/have played? none i am a fat child (in a pushchair). i am getting a bike this year for when i move though!
6. What's the first thing you notice about people? usually tattoos, i love seeing other people's body art!! if they don't have any then usually their outfit/hair, things they can use to express themselves
7. What's your eye color? brown/green? hazelish?
8. Scary movies or happy endings? scary movies as long as i can watch something funny afterwards!
9. Any special talents? i'm kind of okay at voices? like impressions and accents? i can also take any man and babygirlify him immediately no questions asked.

What are your hobbies? i have lots! mainly writing (i do fiction and poetry!) but i'm also pretty crafty. i'm not great at any of them but i cross stitch, needle felt, sculpt a tiny bit. i would love to be able to draw but i've never had the skills. maybe more 3d art too, i want to get into papier mache and stuff but i never have the time and space. i'm also a big theme park enthusiast so i love learning about and visiting theme parks and rides!!
12. Do you have pets? i have one little baby cat. his name is phil or sausage roll. he is a bastard and i love him so so much.
13. How tall are you? not very!!! i think i'm 5'3 or 5'4 :(
14. Favorite subject in school? i was good at english but i never enjoyed it. i liked maths when i knew what i was doing!! i didn't need to persue it past my gcses but i really enjoyed it and sometimes if i'm understimulated i will do algebra for fun. yeah, i know.
15. Dream job? eccentric poet who only makes books once in a blue moon and everyone puts quotes in their web weaving posts. failing that, themed entertainment!! i would love to design/direct immersive experiences, i have a dream of leading a company who uses spaces for big immersive scare attractions/actor led experiences. failing that, children's television. i'm deadly serious.

Currently am on the many sleeping drugs plus cold medicine and they are stirring my eyes around in a talky way so helllo how are you? I have been reading about komodo dragons with their heads in buckets and also people having hypothermia debated with the ice-water dunked and that all makes for a weird clacking noise in my stirry brain cocktail.
I appreciate the tungls yes I do. They keeps all my various ideations to a dull roar.

My #1 post of 2022
You know what I wanna see? A story about Gotham centered on, like, Gotham paramedics, social workers, legal aid & pro bono lawyers, stuff like that. Emergency services that aren’t the cops. People who help people past the point of ”OK who needs to get punched and/or arrested?”
Think of it, that shit would be wild. Like, how long does this city go between crises where entire city blocks get hit with aerosolized amphetamines? Someone has to deal with that shit.
Look, my sister’s a social worker, and she was telling me about this meme her coworkers found on facebook, some pro-cop bullshit where it was like, ”Well what if there’s some 200 pound naked guy running screaming down the street, you wanna send a social worker after that guy?” And every one of them was like, ”Uh. Yeah. That’s it, that’s the job.”
And like, not that the job doesn’t attract its share of bullies and abusers- I’ve been on the wrong end of shitty social workers before and it sucks- but at least it’s a profession that generally considers it a failure if the client ends up dead, injured, or in jail. At least there’s a potential there for stories that show the humanity of the people who would otherwise only show up to get rescued or have the crap beaten out of them.
Like. Tell us about a homeless shelter in Gotham. Tell us about a food kitchen. Who are the regulars there, and why? Who works there? What’s a day treatment meeting look like in a place where the supervillains cook up a new Crazy Debilitating Gas every week, some of which can fuck your shit up permanently?
What about people just trying to get to work in a situation like that? I bet after a while they just started selling gas masks at corner bodegas. (Probably mostly shitty ones.) Average Gotham Citizen has got to have so much PTSD about it.
I heard somewhere that DC has an editorial rule that goes, ”Gotham always gets worse,” and like. How can you hear that and not feel crushingly depressed? If you can’t tell a Batman story where Gotham gets better, where’s the space in there for hope? Isn’t that what escapist fantasy is supposed to be about? And ”Gotham never gets better” says the opposite of that, it says, ”There’s no escape, nothing gets better, let’s go watch some more civilians get blown up and then punch someone about it to show we care,” and that’s. Terrible. Like 40 cakes worth of terrible, OK?
