Advice on how to achieve aesthetically pleasing gameplay photos!

UPDATED: 4/22/2024

I made this post earlier today and people were interested in the comments! Which made me more excited to make this post~

this is just some advice from me! this isnt a tutorial or anything of that sort, but I will be linking some things that could be helpful for editing gameplay! :D

First things first, I want to say that I use a graphics overhaul, lighting mods check my resources page for what reshade i use if ur interested.

Now we can move on to the advice!

I love the simple style of gameplay editing so much, but for me I love creating an ambience with my posts and put the audience inside of my gameplay. I also enjoy storytelling with gameplay more than just the "usual" gameplay post (when it comes to me). I am currently playing the globetrotter challenge with my sim Daichi. I really went all out with the editing for that gameplay. For this one its very much a virtual collage of my sim doing things. Trying new things and getting inspired by others is always fun and cool! Remember when u do take inspo: link to the inspiration and @ the simmer that inspired u!!

In my other save (my cozy save) I also take creative liberties there.

its more of a cozy vibe & silent story-telling (storytelling w/o the dialogue). for my cozy save i take inspiration from @/stellarfalls. er gameplay really helped me find my niche thing in the way i play the game tbh!

Angles/Screenshots

When you're taking your screenshots, angles are important. Depending on the shot, you're putting emphasis on a specific thing. This post is very helpful and talks about different types of angles/shots and what they mean. Check it out especially if you want to play around with the way you take screenshots!

Reshade

If I want to create a moody or dreamy ambience I can use reshade. Looking for a reshade that will fit the overall vibe is a must or you can make your own~

i know not everyone is able to use reshade because they're not on windows. I highly recommend using photoshop actions to create that ambience you're looking for.

*These can be used in photopea, but it cant read topaz clean. If you want to achieve topaz clean in photopea, check this post out! just something i'd like to add in case people are new to all of this + dont use photoshop. Lastly, I want to say if you decide to edit photos on photopea, it does tend to crash if you upload a big number of photos and slows down. I usually upload like 6 or 8 and then save and repeat the process. Its kinda annoying, but ive been using photopea for a while now so im used to it. My mac users, use early-grapes butter action if you want things to look cleaner and less harsh!! + the other ps actions down below. I used these a lot when I was a mac user. Of course, that comes with extra steps, but I feel its worth it in the end.

Templates!

I loveeeeeee templates so much!! theres so many out there to use for gameplay. It really adds more to gameplay posts! This can be dust/dirt, film burn, that cute camera template etc etc. templates are really fun to use and play around with~

I usually go on deviantart to find templates to use! if you want to check out my deviantart account you can find it here! I favorite a lot of things I can use for gameplay screenies.

Gifs

making gifs is cool because it brings the gameplay "to life" ~

EZgif is a free website that converts videos to gifs. You'll need a recording program like OBS (which is also free).

i like making gifs when i want to capture a (cute) moment (kisses, hugs, cooking etc etc). Its also cool to capture the weather in game like when its snowing or raining.

Little details

Some people really go all out on editing gameplay posts like adding hair strands and adding more details to sims faces (catchlights, tears, blushing, etc). You dont really have to do this, but I want to mention it anyways! I want to try doing this at some point because I enjoy editing my gameplay posts/photos in general and adding tiny details is fun to me lol. It adds realism to posts, but it isnt necessary!

Procreate is a really good program that you can get if you have an ipad. its 10$ and thats, that. You dont have to make any payments. You can also animate on procreate too if you're down for that!

Find inspiration in other simmers!

the sims community on tumblr is filled with such talented people! Theres lots of gameplay simmers who dont do your typical gameplay posts that you can check out and learn from!!! Ive always struggled with getting the right angles when taking screenies. I looked at other simmers and how they take screenshots & it was really helpful for me since I noticed I would take too many over the shoulder photos on my sims lol.

A Phone Call Away

this is just goldenpunk fluff idk what else to tell you, there's no plot to this

“Hi,” Pav whispered, as soon as the call connected.

“‘ello,” Hobie hummed. “Wha’ are ya’ upto?”

“Nothing, I’m just out getting some groceries. Auntie sent me out and told me not to come back, until I find the brand of tea she likes,” Pav smiled and Hobie could feel the sun shining on his face. Then he frowned. “Are you still in bed?”

Hobie laughed. ”I was readin’ a book,” He said, holding up 1984.

“Gadhe. Tell me you've eaten something, at least,” Pav shook his head, putting a bag of potatoes in his cart.

“Ate some leftover chips, luv’, don’t worry about it.”

“I am going to worry, it’s like 2 in the afternoon at yours, and you’re still in bed. I’m not even there to cook you something.” Pav whined. Hobie felt something warm curl up in his chest.

“Awwh, babe, you love me?”

“Of course, janemann, I love you so much.” Pav held up a pack of tiny biscuits Hobie recognised to be ‘little hearts’. “I would literally kill to kiss you right now.”

“I’d die to kiss ya’.”

“Yeah.” Pavi stared at something off camera, doing some calculations with his unoccupied hand. “Hey, do you think I should get the family pack for 150 rupees or buy two 4-packs of maggi at 160?” He turned to the camera, showing a yellow pack of noodles to Hobie.

“I don't even know the difference,” said Hobie, finally getting up from his bed, looking for the copper water bottle Pav had bought for him.

Pav hummed, “I’m getting the two 4 packs,” He dumped the said items into his cart. “Should I get schezwan chutney for you?”

“The red spicy one? Oh fuck yea’ ov' course,” He said, watching the shirt ride up Pav’s shirt as he reached for the sauce on the top shelf. “It too high for you, shona?” Hobie asked, seeing the predictable blush rise up Pav's face at the hindi pet name. He loved it when Hobie tried and butchered hindi.

“Jaanu, you know I'm in public. I can't respond like I want to, that's so unfair.”

“I know, mere subah ki kiran,” He said, voice raspy, words feeling unusually rounded yet familiar.

“Hobie!”

Hobie laughed. He could see the deep, almost-maroon blush high on Pav’s cheeks.

“Have you been learning from Gayatri again?” Pav asked, voice accusatory, and a sparkle in his eyes.

“I'm not gunna conform o' deny tha',” Hobie finally found the bottle under the bed, and drained it.

“I love you so much, you ass.”

“I love ya too. Wha' time is it at yours now?”

“Around eight pm, why do you ask?”

“I thought we’d eat together, you could have dinner early and I'd’ve a late brekkie.”

“It’s a late lunch at this point,” Pav scolded. “But yes, I'd like that. What are we eating?

“Mac n' cheese?”

“You know that auntie would kill me if i told her that's my dinner.”

“Jus' tell her it's a snack.”

“You are the snack,” Pavi giggled, highly weird behaviour when in public, but Hobie liked the thought of them being disgustingly cute for everyone to see. Everyone to see their love. Everyone to see how important Pav is to him.

Another part begged him to hide Pav away bc what if his enemies hurt Pav to get at him?

Hobie shook his head, because what enemies did he have? He was a tattoo artist and Pav was a physics academic. It's not like they were fighting supervillains everyday.

Pav thought the head shaking was for his comment because he doubled down. “No you definitely are.”

“Does tha' mean you wanna eat me instead ov' the mac n’ cheese?”

“No- I mean- Yes, but what the fuck Hobie, I’m literally at the supermarket, and yes I have earphones in, but-” Someone knocks into Pav.

Hobie recognised the glint of her earrings a moment before he heard her voice. “Oh my god, Pav! You didn't tell me you were back in India?”

“Gayatri! I'm sorry, I came back like 3 days ago, and I've been too busy with packing Maya auntie’s things, I literally forget to sleep,” Pav laughed.

“Sounds like an excuse, Pavitr Prabhakar, you little bitch. If you had let me know, I'd have helped you.”

“That's exactly why I didn't tell you, aren't you working on that new movie? With Ranveer Singh in it?”

“So what, I could make time? And what kind of friend would I be if I didn't help Maya auntie and you to pack her things- Where's she going by the way?”

“Oh, uh- she's moving to the UK, in with us.”

“Oh, she's leaving?”

“Yeah, Hobie and I thought it'd be better if she lived with us and UK has better resources aur sach bolun to unko mujhe apne paas hi rakhna hai.”

“Yeah that's good, I'm going to miss her, I'll miss you both,” Gayatri's voice seemed sad. “But now I've got an excuse to barge into your house.”

“Wasn't I reason enough?”

“You? yes. Hobie? yes. Dono saath mein? Nope, thank you I'm pretty sure I’d have to bleach my eyes.”

“Thats-”

“Shut it. Speaking of hobie, show me the ring?”

Hobie watched as Pav swapped hands, bringing up his left ring finger into view, a familiar ring shining under the harsh grocery store lights.

Gayatri muffled a squeal. Pav’s grin was so wide that Hobie thought it was bleeding off him to Gayatri and him because Hobie found himself smiling into the cabinets as he took out a box of pasta.

“Ohh! kitna pyaara hai! is that real moonstone?”

“Yeah, it's covered with a thin layer of artificial diamond, it's custom made.”

“I'm so jealous. if my next partner doesn't put in at least this amount of effort, i'm breaking up,” Gayatri shoved Pav gently.

“Hobie would love to hear that. Hey, Hobie, did you hear that?” Pav turned to Hobie gleefully, Gayatri butting into the frame with a delighted look.

“Hi Angrez, wasn't stealing Pav’s heart enough? You had to take Maya auntie too?”

“Oh you can’t hear him, take my other earbud.”

Gayatri takes it, sticking out a tongue at both of them.

“Hello guruji, you are the one 'elpin' me charm them,” Hobie saluted her with the spoon he was using to scoop out salt.

“Oh my god you are so impossible, what's the status on the Kohinoor?”

“Still on the king's head, regrettably.”

“You promised to get it back if I let you have Pav-”

“Hey, am I a tradable commodity now?”

“-at this rate you have to return the entire British museum, including interest.”

“I'd gladly do tha' on its own.”

“I’m going to accompany Pav to yours to make sure you do just that. Okay, guys, you can get back to your mushiness. I need to get going.” Gayatri waved at him and handed Pav his earbud, disappearing out of frame.

Pav looked at him with a giddy smile “I saw you put pasta in water, what do you want to bet I can check this out and get a take out box in ten minutes?”

“Not one euro or a rupee, I know ya can, including Maya auntie’s favourite tea.”

“I already found it,” Pav held up a box and Hobie couldn't resist blowing a kiss.

“You're on then,” He said, holding up a bag of shredded mozzarella. “Let’s see who gets mac n’ cheese done first.”

that episode kinda sucked. the metaphors were surface level and Dennis’ character felt reduced and 2D. the “it was all a dream” plot felt cheap. it was cool looking at how his mind works, but it added nothing to the plot, didn’t help build up to something like the extra room, the furniture, Johnny, etc. It felt overhyped, not by the fandom bc we had hope, but by some of the people working on it. It was shot beautifully, but iasip FEELS like iasip with shaky handheld cameras and simple shots. in the gang carries a corpse and mac finds his pride, they both had beautiful cinematography bc they wanted to show something big. this episode felt like it lacked substance and didn’t even help develop Dennis’ character. It possibly even worsened it. Idk it felt very disappointing especially compared to the other episodes AND the other season finales. it it were switched with say Frank Vs Russia or The Gang Goes Bowling, it would of been received better. It also showed no relationships- the gang did nothing in this episode. I know its Dennis centric, but damn they had like two to three phone calls (fake ones that were in his head) and that was it. It did show that Dennis sees the gang as a stressor and that they rely on him too much, and possibly don’t help him back. but yeah, thats my thoughts. it had potential but it was just kinda done wrong. felt too much like a drawn out gag.

Hoya I'm currently saving up for a tablet aswell, because I'm drawing on my school's ipad that I have kept well past the due date, but have to give back now that I'm moving out of my boarding school that I'm sponsored to be in, and i wanted to ask for tips/recommendations what to get, because I have literally no money, and am scared to blow it on a tablet that sucks or something

advice on what to get can vary, but i am VERY opinionated on what not to get: fuck wacom lol. this from someone who's been on an intuos pro for years, but while they at least have longevity going for them, mine has had constant driver issues and a major hardware failing -- years ago the port for connecting it to the comp AND FOR CHARGING IT via usb failed for no reason, which is apparently a common issue for my model, so for years i have been forced to 1. only use it via wireless connection, which makes the driver fussiness WORSE and 2. buy a separate universal camera battery charger, bc w the port failing that was the only way to charge the thing. wacoms are fucking EXPENSIVE, and they're lovely to draw on, but imo for the price they should be massaging my balls as a bonus, not breaking constantly and making me tear my hair out. they are just not worth it unless you have the cash to burn and you're a HUUUUUUGE stickler on all the really technical stuff.

rant aside. i have heard nothing but lovely things about huion, which is why it's what i'm switching to now; here and there i've seen ppl say the drivers can be fussy on mac, but it doesn't seem like a dealbreaker. huions are also pretty damn affordable if you're looking at a standard tablet rather than a screen one.

if a huion is outside your budget, i think i can recommend a monoprice -- my first tablet ever was a tiny wacom bamboo, but my first "serious" tablet that i used constantly/daily was a monoprice. it was dirt cheap and it worked absolutely fine and it lasted me for ages. i haven't used one in a very long time, so i can't speak to if the quality is the same as when i used one, but i always think fondly of the one i had. i remember the first-time driver setup being awful, but once it got working i don't remember ever having issues with it again.

in terms of just general tips: get the biggest one you can afford. it's better for your wrist, and even though it's scary to invest in something when you're not sure you'll like it, it's usually worse to pay for something crappy that you'll end up wanting to replace eventually anyway. even when i've had really cramped workspaces or no real workspace at all, i've never found that the compact-ness of a tiny tablet has made up for how ergonomically shit it is to draw on one; i would rather awkwardly wrangle a slightly-too-big tablet any day.

ooooooh you'd walk into Dennis's bedroom to see all 4 men sitting on his bed, eyes glued to the television screen and your cheeks would turn red as you'd realize they're watching a particularly degrading scene in which Dennis is pounding you from behind and all you can think to say is "What the fuck?" and immediately Frank, Charlie, and Mac look up from their trance- Frank clumsily pulls his hand out of his unbuttoned pants, Charlie is flushed so red his ears are pink, and Mac just stares at you with wide eyes, like a kid caught opening presents the day before Christmas- Dennis doesn't even look up, having known you would likely walk in on his treachery and frankly relishing in it, and of course the guys just kinda awkwardly apologize and stumble over their words as they quickly make their exit, and Dennis just keeps sitting there with a stupid smirk on his face bc he knows he's in trouble but he also knows that now everyone, including you, is thinking about the four of them absolutely railing you and who knows what can happen when a seed is planted

Measuring Character Heights Tutorial

Ever be playing a game and want to know the heights of all ur beloved little guys? It's actually pretty easy to do as long as you have computer access and know the height of at least one character or object!

Step 1: Download Fiji. It's an image analysis software with lots of stuff included-- I won't get too into the weeds with it tho bc that's not too necessary, but you'll need it. It's free and safe, despite the ancient looking website. Just follow all the prompts and whatnot

Step 2: Get an image of all the characters. Having all the models is best, but screenshots are also fine as long as all the characters are the same distance from the camera. I got this one from edgeanescence, who was kind enough to send this to me for SV character heights! Open up ur image in Fiji by opening the application, clicking control + O or command + O if ur a mac user. It should look like this:

Step 3: Click the line button. Now, click on the top of the characters head and drag your mouse to their feet while clicking Shift. Clicking shift makes the line straight

Step 4: Click control + M (command + M if ur a mac user). This is "measure" and will measure the length of the line you just drew in pixels. It'll show up in a popup like this:

Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 for all the characters you want the heights of.

Step 6: Use Wolfram Alpha to set up the following equation. Pixels-of-character-one / inches-of-character-one = pixels-of-character-two / x. In the one I'm doing as an example, the first character I measured is 303 pixels and I know they're 5' tall (60 inches). The character next to her is 337 pixels. So the equation we have now is 303/60 = 337/x. Solve for x and you get 67 inches-- the character next to the protagonist is 5'7"! (make sure when you go to the "solutions" section you click "approximate form"). Just keep doing this and you can figure out the heights of any characters :)

okay SO this is an iasip au where like the gang never really became The Gang bc well. they got what they wanted. so Charlie is a lawyer and he's got two kids with the waitress, Dee is a famous comedian and she's married to Josh Groban, Dennis is a veterinarian and stayed married to Maureen and Mac is just kinda. vibing. bc to be quite honest I am NOT gonna let him be a karate champion and the ony other thing he's ever really wanted is Dennis. so.

Dee’s phone rings and she groans, hoping it’ll go away if she ignores it long enough. She’d apparently forgotten to shut the curtains in her hotel room last night because the sun is streaming in and practically blinding her, already aggravating her shitty hangover.

The ringing stops, and she’s about to put a pillow over her head and try go back to sleep when it starts up again.

She picks it up and it’s a facetime call from her asshole brother, so she wipes her face, flattens down her hair, and answers.

“Dennis, what is it,” she groans. Her mouth feels dry, thank god for the glass of water on her bedside table with some Advil. She swallows it down, then continues. “It’s like… eight in the morning.”

“Eight is a perfectly reasonable time to wake up, Deandra,” says Dennis. His voice is enough to give her a headache on a regular day, but this… She fumbles to turn down the volume of the call. “Anyway, it’s twelve here, and I need to talk to you.”

She blinks. “Talk to your therapist. Talk to your wife, I don’t give a shit.”

Dennis does a manic laugh that seems to surpass the volume limit she’s just set, and it’s enough to snap her to attention, at least. He only sounds like that when he’s spiralling about something.

Still, it’ll probably freak him out more if she tries to be nice to him, so instead she says “keep it down, asshole, you’re gonna wake up Josh.”

She reaches a hand out to the other side of the bed and oh, her husband’s not there. Huh. He must’ve got up already, that explains the water and the painkillers. God, he’s weird. She rolls out of bed and shuffles out to the other room in their suite, flopping down onto a couch instead.

“Josh is there?” Dennis asks, “I didn’t know he was coming with you on tour.”

“He’s not,” Dee replies, rolling her eyes. “He flew out to surprise me for our anniversary.”

Dennis blinks. “That’s… sweet.”

“Ugh.”

There’s a moment’s pause, and Dee’s ready to hang up if he doesn’t get to the point already, when he says “so can we talk about my thing now?”

She waves a hand for him to go ahead, but it’s out of the camera’s line of sight so when he doesn’t continue she says “yeah, whatever.”

“I ran into Mac the other day.”

“Mac…” now there’s a name that means literally nothing to her. Less than nothing, if she’s being honest.

“From high school?”

Dee just keeps looking at Dennis blankly. It seems important, maybe she should know this. Maybe she does know it, she’s just too hung over to remember right now.

“For god’s sake, Dee, you did a whole bit about him in your special last year.”

“What –” she racks her brains. That was a good special, she’d gotten a bunch of awards for it. “Ronnie the rat? Is that who you’re talking about?”

“Yes, Dee.”

“Well why couldn’t you just say that!”

I did some byers family headcanons bc I love them and why not

-a lot of the furniture and decorations from the Hawkins house were damaged in all the fights, so Joyce took them all to pick out new furniture and decor they all liked

-whenever Jonathan sees a garage sale he stops and looks for something he thinks his family would like

-lots of will’s artwork is put up around the house since they still don’t have tons of decor

-moving to CA was a big weather change from indiana, and even though the rest of them compensate with cooler clothing, Will keeps wearing his long sleeves and button ups because he never wants to be cold again

-when El starts school she notices lots of girls wear makeup, and she wants to practice, so Jonathan and Will let her take turns practicing on them

-Jonathan started making birdhouses that were really bad, but he brings them all home for Will to paint on, and then Joyce puts them all up in the backyard (there’s like thirty)

-Will really likes drawing outside in the evening, and he feeds the birds so a lot of them feel comfortable coming up to eat from his hand

-Joyce likes to play Fleetwood Mac when cooking dinner, and she starts singing to encourage El

-Jonathan and Will join in, and El always feels confident singing with her family even if she doesn’t know all the words

-El likes braids because they remind her of Max, and Joyce is her go-to for braiding hair, but sometimes Jonathan will do them, and he adds little clips or ribbons for her

-Will helps El learn to draw a bit better, and she includes a drawing she did with Will’s reference drawing in a letter to Mike and it surprises him to see Will’s artwork (he hangs up both in his room)

-Jonathan suggests they start family game night when he sees Will looking at some old dnd stuff, and the byers actually manage to have family game night once a week

-El doesn’t like chess, but she beats them all whenever they convince her to (they don’t know how)

-El does like Candy land

-Joyce takes them to try different food places all the time, and El loves trying new food (even if she still has her favorites)

-so far breakfast burritos and chow mein are her favorite new foods

-Jonathan and Will both know how to cook, and they want eleven to be able to feed herself so they teach her slowly (she’s set off the fire alarm five times)

-since El hasn’t had any of her birthdays celebrated, they spend a full week making cakes and giving her gifts (her favorite of which is a photo book with pictures of the friends in Hawkins and hopper already in it)

-Joyce tells El stories of Hopper from their high school days and finds movies he liked to watch with her

-El is a pretty good reader, and Will takes her to the library to pick out books (she couldn’t get into the lord of the rings, but she likes Heidi and Charlottes Web)

-As per tradition, Jonathan makes family videos during the holidays, and lets El hold the camera to shoot some footage

-El mentions missing Hawkin’s flowers, so Joyce buys her flowers and they garden a bit

-Joyce and Jonathan often do chores together (washing and drying dishes, folding laundry, taking out the trash and recycling) and rant about L*nine together, which always ends in a hug and eating candy

-Joyce puts the boys in washing the car once, and as the sibling rule, completely soaked each other, so she made them stand outside until they were dry and El sat in the doorway to keep them out

-El likes Legos and Will helped her build out a mini Hawkins in the living room

-when they go to Hawkins to visit the first time, Joyce thinks it will be cheaper to drive and has to make frequent stops because the kids all want to see the worlds largest ball of twine and the four corners. She tells them she’s going to go insane, but she loves seeing all their smiles in pictures

why are people still buying iphones? its well known at this point they use slave labor and that they also engage in planned obsolence, not to mention all their updates and changes theyve made to their products that are user unfriendly and done to charge people more. like at this point theres truly something wrong with iphone users, but oh im sure the superior camera is worth it 🙄

All phone companies use slave labor, let's get real. But iphone planned obsolescence is more visible bc the release of their new phone seem more quick than those of other brands.

I never own an iphone (and never will cause these wireless earphones look absolutely stupid lmao) and I have no doubt they are extremely performant (especially photo quality - I heard iphone photi quality was better). This whole apple apps/cloud synch makes them very handy to share files which is why it's its the phone of choice for influencers, but that's it.

When I was taking my marketing classes, my teacher was pushing me to own an iphone for those reasons. She didn't seem to know Android that well, and when she was trying to explain to me some stuff she was like "i don't know if you can do it on Android" and I could. It's just that it was a bit different do to it. I think the "superiority complex" some iphone havers have comes from the lack of knowledge of how android work and they think they do less. My teacher on twitter occasionally reblogged a post clowning Android users with someone being like "my hair is a mess, my nails aren't done, I feel like an Android 😭" which is very interesting bc she also retweeted post saying that androids users were obsessed dunking on iphone unprovoked 🥴

I really liked her bc she came off like the typical iphone user projecting their own defensiveness over apple for android lol

Android business model is entirely different than apple. Android opts for accessibility and customization (same for Windows). Apple is more exclusive and need a dedicated app system. These are different need for different type of demographics, so it's stupid to pit them against each other.

Interestingly you won't see apple users be that much defensive about Mac computer against Windows like that (which would be understandable bc unlike android, windows legitimately sucks). Why? Because it's the influencers/cool/rich people's phone - Mac don't have that much of a cool image (it's more the computer of tech/industrious people). They are so defensive of iphone because they want to defend their status of belonging to that club.

Android users don't have this worry of defending an image bc this system is shared by multiple phone brands with different brandings.
