The two (2) singular times in all of officially recorded history that Avaric was not Completely Awful, but in fact showed signs of Caring About Another Person:
“‘Something has happened to you,’ said Avaric. ‘I’m not that dull. What’s wrong?’
‘Nothing’s wrong,’ said Boq.
‘Tell me to mind my own business, tell me to go fuck myself, to piss off, go on, say it, but don’t tell me nothing’s wrong. For you’re not that good a liar, and I’m not that stupid. Even for a dissipated Gillikinese of decaying nobility.’ His expression was soft…” (94)
Tumblr media
“Boq fell back against the wall, and Avaric, who had never seen the Goat before, held Boq’s hands tightly with one hand and covered his own face with the other.” (128)
Tumblr media
Now I’m not saying for certain that Avaric like-liked Boq, but I think it’s fairly possible he did. Boq seems to be the only person in existence that Avaric is actually nice to. Surely there is some reason for this, and that reason could be romantic love. Avaric never acted on it in the slightest, and Boq was completely oblivious, and nothing ever came of it.
On the rare occasion he allows himself to reminisce on his past with any degree of seriousness, Avaric wonders what might have happened, what kind of person he could have been if he had acted differently all those years ago at Shiz. He’ll laugh and brush it off with a sneer, but in a life of loose morals and cruel actions, that lost chance is quite possibly the only thing he regrets.
He tells himself he’s happiest caring for no one but himself and nothing but his own entertainment. He tells himself he wouldn’t give up his power and grandeur for anything so sentimental as love. He has a large painting of a Munchkinland field and farmhouse hanging in his office.
Y’know, for someone who claims not to be a shipper, I do a surprising amount of it unprompted. Imagine though:

I'm reading Left Hand of Darkness, and there's this theme of Ai being unable to understand Estraven's ways because Estraven is an upper-crust member of an alien culture. And I've been wondering what it reminds me of and it suddenly hit me that it's the thing between Boq and Avaric in the Wicked novel. There's a part where Avaric gives Boq a kiss on the forehead and Boq is like "I will never understand this rich man and his elegant manners."
I read that book when I was way too young for it, so a lot of it flew over my head and I don't remember very much. Apparently there was actual gay shit going on in those books but I did not pick up on ANY of it.
And yet I've been profoundly but unknowingly shipping Boq and Avaric this entire time, to the point where they're THE standard I measure against all other fictional class-divided gay couples. Like somehow these minor straight characters from a book I barely remember imprinted on my baby gay brain and I am stuck with them forever.
I do remember being disappointed that Avaric isn't in the musical and they essentially gave his personality to Fiyero. Now that I realize I was shipping him I'm like, they stole from my boy! My gay boy! They stole from the gays and gave to the straights😭 (he's literally not even gay)

What I think each Wicked character would do in college if it were in our current world:
Elphaba: Natural Sciences
G(a)linda: Architecture
Fyiero: International relations
Boq: Agricultural engineering
Nessie: Art hystory/History (because i read a fic where she was a art student and it made so much sense to me)
Avaric: Sommelier (i know that is not a course, but come on, make sense right?)
Pfanne and Shenshen: pedagogy (If you read Out of Oz, you know why)

But really, what kills me about Musical Wicked vs. Book Wicked…is just how much Musical Wicked made the whole thing the Glinda Show.
Elphaba was not just the protagonist of Book Wicked, she was its tragic heroine, its living and breathing heart, its mystery and compulsion. It was she who changed or at least influenced Glinda the most. It was Glinda who wanted to join her after the meeting with the Wizard and Elphaba refused. Without her half the Charmed Circle wouldn’t even be friends (Boq, Avaric, Crope and Tibbet, Fiyero). She joined an Animal Rights terrorist group and legit tried to kill Madam Morrible. She fucked Fiyero and then went to serve his wife and family. She was complex and dynamic and flawed and 100% badass.
But in the musical? She’s this sensitive and naïve bookish nerd Mean Girl!Glinda takes pity on and befriends when she dances with her at the Ozdust Ballroom. She is magically talented and dreams of meeting the Wizard. 🤮🤮🤮🤮 She humors Glinda’s “Popular” advice and actually makes a good faith effort of doing her “flirt and flouncing” suggestions (Book Elphaba would have carved up Glinda into a soup and used her hair as spaghetti). She almost falls for the Wizard’s “aw shucks” shtick twice.
And of course there is the very glaring change of having the whole musical be a flashback from Glinda’s POV. So Musical Elphaba is not even an objective Elphaba to begin with. She is how Musical Glinda remembers Elphaba and their time during and after Shiz.
The only part of the show that is even the tiniest bit faithful to Elphaba’s book character is probably the songs. Not The Wizard and I, pffft, fuck that, but like. No Good Deed, maybe. And even that is missing Book Elphaba’s self-loathing, her inherent belief in her ~evil.
Musical Glinda was also very much dumbed down re: comic relief, but the nuances in her character—her shrewdness, political savvy and diplomacy—are still there even as subtext. Musical Elphaba, though, is flattened into Bookish Brunette rather than a complex tragic heroine doomed by her own uncompromising personality and her authoritarian dysfunctional time.

As one of the only members of the Wicked booksical fandom, here are my head cannons lol
-Elphaba is def intersex, and was androgynous looking; although her hair made her look feminine in her face.
-Elphaba is also pan af, and so is Fiyero. I totally believe that Fiyero slept with Cropp and/or Tibbit at least once. Possible Avaric too.
-Glinda is def Sapphic. I’m not the biggest fan of Gelphie because Glinda is somone who ‘Takes’ more in a relationship than what she ‘gives’, and Elphaba needs the exact opposite of that. They are definitely still best friends though, and I think they experimented together.
-Elphaba either absolutely did not want children, or she was 100% for it once she got over her anxiety. I really see her being comfortable and content as a mother since she has experience with Nessa. I think it would depend on what Fiyero would want, and what his health was like. In the book, she has Liir after she’s gone mad due to grief so she was a horrible mother. If that was avoided, I think she would have been a great mom in the booksical au.
-Frex knew Elphaba wasn’t his daughter, but he didn’t realize that Nessa wasn’t likely his either, she was Turtle Heart’s.
-Elphaba is a polyglot, and has an photographic memory. I also see her as Autistic, which contributed to her social awkwardness, and her extreme empathy for Animals.
-the Vinkus’s culture is very diverse depending where you are. But generally the culture is very similar to Southeast Asian and more Northern and Central American Indigenous as you move south towards Quaddlings land. The Quaddlings culture is similar to Traditional North American Seminole, and they live in an Everglades like environment.
-Fiyero wasn’t simply aiming for Captain of the Guard to search for Elphaba and he didn’t do so to only cheat on Glinda; he was a military professional (given his royal background we can assume he has extensive training prior to Shiz), and he used his connections and acting to commit the best espionage plot that was ever heard of, getting up to the top most military commander as a mole in the Wizard’s government.
-The Wizard has plans to raze the Vinkus to avoid their trained military. This was why Fiyero’s parents and government were open to him enlisting to be part of the Guard in the Emerald City.
-Elphaba was definitely forced to be a sex worker as part of her resistance work. Sex workers throughout the Emerald City were key to gathering and sharing information for the Resistance.
-Elphaba has a another lover (a female one) while in the Resistance, prior to running away with Fiyero. I think they would have broken up or something would have happened to her for Elphaba to be comfortable enough to run with Fiyero. She’s too comfortable during their night on the run for her to not be experienced in being in a relationship (not necessarily just sex)
-Animals are made up of mammals that have evolved separately than their animal counterparts. Prior to the Wizard’s scapegoating them, each breed (? That doesn’t feel like the best word) had it’s own style of living among humans. Like Tabby Cats used human baby mattresses; and large Animals have doors built for their height. That’s why a lot of the doors seen the world of Oz (besides Munchkinland) have high doors.
-Fiyero originally brought Killyjoy and her brother, who was all black while he was at Shiz. Killyjoy immediately took to Elphaba when they initially met; and later both dogs came with him on his searches for Elphaba. Killyjoy alerted to her scent and took off after rubbing herself against Fiyero, and that’s how Killyjoy became one of Elphaba’s protector/companion.
-in the Higher Kells Mountain region, dog sleds are used for transport.
-The Wizard’s army invaded the Quaddlings land to find rubies, and this led to an entire genocide against the Quaddlings. We know this is why Turtle Heart came to met Frex and Elphaba’s mom. Many Quaddlings women ended up in the Emerald City and the Vinkus. Various Quaddlings were a large part of the Resistence in the city and surrounding areas.
-Elphaba wasn’t allergic to water, but she had a fear of drowning after her parents and Nanny attempting to repeatedly ‘wash’ the green off. It was such a strong phobia that she didn’t like putting her head under the water when washing her hair, thus she tied her hair back often to avoid washing it so much. Once Fiyero found out, he helped her wash her hair without submerging her head.

BETTY LA FEA X WICKED
Interesting au idea a bit weird, but i adore Wicked, i love GELPHIE and i love Betty la FEA also seeing a jealouse Glinda towards Elphaba would give me life. If someone writes this i will literally cry of joy basically
Elphaba is Betty (obviously)
G(a)linda is Armando (of course because GELPHIE endgame)
Fiyero is Marcela duh or maybe Avaric actually Avaric fits better i believe if we go more with Wicked the book i prefer Avaric as Marcela
Book cinnamon roll Fiyero would definitely be Freddy
Either Phanne or Shenshen are Patricia, is ay Phanne is Patricia and ShenShen is Mario
Boq would definitely be Nicholas
I mean idk who Elphabas friends would be because the only friends left are Cropp and Tibbet, but idk who they could be in El Cuartel de las Feas, maybe Sofia and Berta but idk doesn't convince me
This is so random but i need this au

wicked for the ask game :0
Why, I'm glad you asked, May :D *whips out PowerPoint presentation*
Blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most)
Glinda. It's the layers for me. Girls who've been raised to be the epitome of an elegant, diplomatic, heterosexual, heteroromantic gentlewoman—yet there's someone different stifled underneath.
Scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
Chistery my snow monkey friend <3
Scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)
Nessarose. To start, neither the book nor musical have the best portrayals of her disability (the musical especially). But within both portrayals are some truly fascinating ideas; she's incredibly devoted to religion, a stark contrast to Elphaba's critique of it. Unfortunately, she does often get forgotten or sidelined. I have yet to write her myself, to be honest, but ahh she's really interesting!
Glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)
That one ensemble member that goes: "GLINDA! exactly how dead is she?!"
Poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)
Elphaba and Glinda are each poor little meow meows in their own way
Horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)
Avaric. I would bully that frat boy so hard
Eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)
So, ahem. Does...does Gregory Maguire himself count? That Philosophy Club chapter should be more than enough reason. If you don't know what I'm referring to, uh...don't worry about it go back to bed

Trying to decide if I want to change Avaric’s hairstyle. One of these maybe?
Tumblr media
What says “cool rich jerk” but isn’t too on the nose about it?
Character design is so hard… and his face looks so generic... My skills definitely have room to improve…
Why am I spending so much time on Avaric anyway? I don’t even LIKE him.

the best part of the post-shiz chapters in the wicked book is indisputably the scene where elphaba breaks into avaric's house and crashes his dinner party and announces that she has murdered their old college headmaster and avaric is like damn that's crazy lol wanna stay for dinner. man of all time king of giving zero fucks <3

Decided to make more Wicked musical artbreeder portraits, this time featuring my awful edit skills (oh and bonus Avaric because free real estate) I gave up on trying to make them look anything remotely like the cast members and just did whatever xP
Fiyero and Elphaba here :)
