So Vexed Viewer is bitching about that scene in the latest RWBY Episode where Yang chews out Salem and refers to Summer as her mom.

So let’s get into this.

“I have had issues with the character Yang since Volume 2, one of which is that she refuses to acknowledge her mom Summer Rose-”

Where. Where did Yang imply that she doesn’t consider Summer to be her mom? Don’t try giving me that ‘But she’s trying to connect to Raven/calls Raven mom’ shit- The trope of an adopted child seeking out their lost biological parent is VERY common, which tells me people at large understand the concept that someone can consider their adoptive parent to be their parent but still long for a connection to the biologic one.

For me to accept that you do not understand this commonly understood trope is for me to assume you’re either too lazy to think about it or too stupid TO UNDERSTAND it. Neither of which reflects very well on you.

“She hasn’t acknowledge Summer as her mom since Volume 2-”

Summer hasn’t really come UP since then. She came up once in Volume 5...while Yang was highly emotional and knowing how that is, she wasn’t being rational or even necessarily true to herself.

Do you not understand yet ANOTHER basic concept?

“Yang had not one but TWO loving parents in Summer and Tai-”

Summer died when Yang was pretty young and Taiyang, while loving, STILL fucked up his parenting by shutting down. Just because her parents loved her does not mean Yang’s upbringing was perfect or anything. All that IGNORING what I said about the trope of biological parents.

“Yang did not know who Raven was until AFTER Summer died. They act like they didn’t have the same parents but they were raised by the same damn woman.”

Okay, I’m about to go on a seemingly unconnected tangent but bear with me:

I’ve never believed that you could clone someone and get an exact replica. Because the clone would have the knowledge of being a CLONE, therefore fundamentally altering the person from the moment they were created. You know, since the original wouldn’t be affected by this kind of knowledge.

The mere KNOWLEDGE of something can alter people. Like say, knowing you’re not biologically related to the person who raised you and thus altering your perception of yourself, that person and your relation. Even denying the physical connection to the missing parent and embracing the emotional connection to the present one would not be the same as if you were biologically connected, as that conclusion would come as the result of learning the info, processing the info, interpreting the info and finally accepting it in this specific way.

Vexed acting like Yang shouldn’t have her view changed by this revelation is ignorant of how people develop and think. Which, you know, is kind of a necessary tool for CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF MEDIA.

“For some reason, the writers’ decided that the memory of Summer should only matter to RUBY-”

And Taiyang. And Qrow. And Raven. And Ozpin likely. ...

And also Yang. Since, you know, the memory of Summer and that sudden revelation and shift of her memory of Summer is what is CAUSING Yang to act the way she does. If she didn’t have some kind of familial connection to Summer, she’d act differently about Raven.

“Summer raised Yang and spent more time with her than Ruby did!”

Vexed, you do know that the common image of what a parent is and how we feel about them is in part due to being biologically related to them. Just as blood isn’t the end all be all of parenting: that same blood can still affect how we view people. It’s just one factor in a complicated equation.

“So why is she being cut out of the Summer Rose stuff?”

Because she isn’t facing ideological issues that connect her to Summer like Ruby is? So there isn’t a need here? You know, basic writing?

“So why am I bringing this up?”

I already know why you’re bringing this up. And a question remains-

Where did Yang ever say Summer wasn’t her mom?

She never says she didn’t have a mom growing up, she never indicates she doesn’t feel like Summer is her mom (aside from one instance which is an odd case in general), she never says that Raven is the ONLY one who is her mom-

In all honesty, it feels more like you made a connection between Yang and Summer in that one scene in Volume 2...then disregard everything else when things don’t go as you like there.

“Yang never bringing up Summer on Volume 5 was a missed opportunity-”

Well, looks like I was right since I’ve been in this EXACT SAME situation and I know it’s because I got overly attached to a certain idea.

“Can i get a talk about their damn mother? Pretty please, with sugar on top?”

Says the man who lies constantly about the show to make the creators, especially the writers, look bad.

Honestly, you’re lucky that you aren’t served the narrative equivalent of rat poison and cyanide topped with a middle finger: it’s what you deserve.

“Yang just mentioned Summer now face to face with Salem but dur Blake?”

So Yang only mentioned Summer when face to face with Salem...the woman you just said is implied to have helped make Summer disappear...after less than two in universe days...while not mention Summer during a time where Yang is questioning more pressing matters...in a time in the show all about questioning their choices about the present situation.

... Yeah, certainly a ‘fan scenario I’m pissed isn’t written’ thing.

‘That would have made this scene so much better!’

You mean like how you thought Weiss confronting her father about unrelated matters was a good time to make it personal?

‘Oh well, too late now!’

What, did you realize your suggestions are always shallow as shit?

“See Yang fans, I want what’s best for her just like you do!”

... Except you’ve portrayed Yang fans as being obsessive yuri shippers so either you admitted you’re just as irrational...or you’re saying Bumbleby is good.

Pick your poison.

“Oh and you’re welcome.”

Really? Because you didn’t act any different aside from being extra smug...and that’s like adding black paint to a black hole.

Gwen Stacy #1-2 Thoughts

A mixed bag.

There are four fundamental problems with this book:

It further kisses the ass of a character unworthy of such adoration and who already has another title. A character who’s adoration often has come at the expense of the other characters

It characterizes Gwen as flawless. Maybe not Spider-Man: Blue levels of romanticized perfection but still flawless nevertheless

The timing of the story is rather confusing everything points to it occurring between ASM #23-30 except we learn Uncle Ben died the same day as Gwen Stacy #1…how???????????????????????????

This book is pointless. Gwen is dead. Her enduring relevance is through the mere fact that Spidey and Miles Warren loved her and are sad about her death. What she was like in High School has 0 relevance to the current status quo, the status quos before her death and even the status quos when she was alive

Basically this book is a well plotted YA crime story that wrapped around a lot of continuity porn.

It let’s you see Jean DeWolff in action. It lets you see a pre-Wraith Yuri Watanabe in action. It shows you Gwen’s high school sweetheart. It sets up those Stan Lee stories where Gwen is somewhat involved in politics. It explains how and when Gwen met Norman and Harry. How Captain Stacy got injured and how he retired. It shows you more of the Goblin’s Ditko era gangland schemes. It shows you Gwen cooked for her Dad.

And sure, the fanboy in me, the continuity lover in me LIKES seeing that stuff. But thinking critically for a moment…this is all pretty pointless isn’t it.

What do we gain from learning how exactly Spider-Man’s dead girlfriend’s dead Dad injured his leg? Nothing. We don’t even gain that much from finding out he was friends with Spider-Man’s other dead friend Jean DeWolff.

I mean Harry is a live right now but never talks about Gwen. Before Child Within I don’t think he ever talked about his dead friend Gwen Stacy and that’s honestly the most relevant thing in this title thus far.*

That being said if you LIKE any of the stuff mentioned and want something just self-indulgent then go for it.

I loved seeing Norman. Although I laughed at how utterly unsubtle the book was about him. Todd Nauck introduces him with a big Green Goblin image behind him just in case you didn’t see Spider-Man 2002 and didn’t know Norman Osborn was the Green Goblin. Gage drops lines referencing Norman’s eventual murder of her with the subtly of a hammer. Although I am intrigued by the fact that he is actively derailing her investigation and the fact that Gwen is on the trail of a mystery we already know the answers to. The tension doesn’t lie in the threat to the characters because we know who’s going to live (and I don’t care about Darius who’s unlikely to make it out alive). Rather the tension lies in how this is going to get to the resolution we know is inevitable.

I also like how the story lightly draws parallels to George’s job and Peter’s. Being Spider-Man did kill Gwen in the end, but it wasn’t like she hadn’t lived her life at risk anyway. It legitimizes Peter’s relationship with her and other women because it conveys that non-super powered crime fighters also expose their loved ones to danger. Indeed, in this story George Stacy has been targeted by an outright super villain.

Perhaps above all else I adored how the crime story gels. It all adds up, it’s all clearly conveyed to us and it progresses logically. Perhaps it’s not novel, but in this day and age I’d prefer competency over novelty any day.

I also liked how the book did lightly flesh out how Peter and Gwen might’ve emotionally connected with one another. They both had to be caregivers to elderly/infirm parental figures when their other parental figure died. Peter had to step up and become the man of the house after Ben died. Gwen kind of had to fill her mother’s shoes after her death, as shown by her making and delivering food to her father. I will say this, for good or ill, Gage nailed her relationship with her Dad as it was an entirely organic extrapolation from their Silver Age interactions.

But that’s yet another problem with the book. As I expected, it’s revisionist history. This is not a natural extrapolation of Ditko’s Gwen Stacy, it’s a natural extrapolation of the post-mortem idea of Gwen Stacy. The page from Nick Lowe in issue #1 pretty much confirms that when it waxes lyrical about Gwen’s decency and so on. Shit, the recap pages refer to Gwen as the ‘one and only’ when she literally has an AU counterpart with a solo book and infamously has been cloned like half a dozen times. There was clearly more love and attention lavished upon this book than the other female led Spider titles. ‘We are all big Gwen Stacy fans’ said Lowe. That has be concerned if I’m honest.

Gwen’s look in the book reflects this. She sports her classic black headband, long hair look more than once. Of course it’s possible for someone to sport different hair styles throughout their lives and go back to them. But in this case Gwen only began to look that way because she was actively emulating MJ’s look. The fact that she does look like that is proof this book isn’t rooted in how Gwen was but how she was remembered as being. Although I appreciate Nauck did play with her looks beyond that, she isn’t dressed as she was the night she died or anything.

But the back-up stories...holy shit.

Let’s put aside how MJ didn’t get back-ups in her solo-book. They just brown nose Gwen so goddam hard. An Avengers team comprised of Gwen’s. Gwen killing Goblins on the Brooklyn Bridge. A paper doll of Gwen? Jesus Christ.

Overall…I dunno if I can recommend this book to anyone not in the Cult of Gwen. Because it was made specifically for them. But if you aren’t this is skippable, unless you are a continuity junkie like me.

*I suppose Yuri Watanabe could come back into the titles but she was so under utilized from her inception-now I don’t think this will gain us anything either

Fandom Questions

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?

Properly? Probably Pokemon. I’ve been writing fanfiction for it for years.

2. What is your latest fandom?

Funnily enough, Sonic, despite being a fan since I was like seven years old. I’ve just never seriously got into it since then until now.

3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?

The Pokemon fandom. I’ve made some awesome friends in it.

4. Do you regret getting involved in any fandoms?

You hear things, but I’ve not really come across any toxicity besides the reaction to the Sonic Movie.

5. Which fandoms have your written fanfiction for?

A good few, but the only ones you’ll find are Pokemon, Sonic and Zootopia.

6. List your OTP from each fandom you’ve been involved in.

Zootopia - Judy/Nick

Sonic - Shadow/Rouge, Silver/Blaze

Pokemon - I don’t usually ship in Pokemon, but Jessie/James because reasons

7. List your NoTPs from each fandom you’ve been in.

Sonic/Amy. Sorry. Some art is cute, but it’s not my jam.

Shadow/Maria. I don’t ship animals with humans.

I also don’t ship yaoi/yuri pairings.

I do not poop on any ship. If it’s one I’m not fond of, I just scroll on and leave it be. Shipping can be pretty toxic sometimes, and I just don’t get it at all.

8. How did you get involved in your latest fandom?

I was writing Mask Behind the Monster and my husband’s aunt suggested I join a specific Sonic forum to post it in. So I joined the Amino and posted it, all nervous. The reception blew me away, and I met some awesome people, so I stuck around.

9. What are the best things about your current fandom?

The friends I’ve made.

10. Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?

Probably. Can’t think of any off the top of my head.

Knuckles/Amy. I still have a soft spot for it.

Erm... if I remember right, Some cringy self-insert Pokemon ‘fic when I was like 14/15.

Everything I regret writing has been deleted.

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

The End and Mask Behind the Monster. I can’t choose one over the other. They were both written with a lot of meaning and emotion behind them, and I have a soft spot for both.

24. What fic do you desperately need to rewrite or edit?

I keep thinking about re-writing The End, but I worry it will lose its fire if I do...

25. What’s your most popular fanfic?

I think... THINK... it’s Mask Behind the Monster.

26. How do you come up with your fanfic titles?

To Title is hard. System:Reboot was a suggestion off a friend who I have lost touch with. Its working title is ‘Hacked’. A lot of my stories have preliminary working titles until I come up with something. The End was named after a song. Confectionary Conundrum was originally called ‘Sugar Snow’ which is the name of the sweet shop in that story. The Mainframe Saga’s Scrivener file is still called ‘Datastream’. Its separate books have been renamed as I’ve been ‘planning’ them out (as much as I plan).

27. What do you hate more: Coming up with titles or writing summaries?

Probably summaries, because FFNet leaves very little space to do so.

28. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?

I have actually had fanart, so this is hard to say. A lot of people like drawing my cyberpunk Infinite redesign which has surprised me.

29. Do you have a beta reader? Why/Why not?

My husband proof-reads my stuff, and then I question him on it. I don’t have a beta. I’ve thought about it, but I stick to a strict time-frame when it comes to uploads where I strictly give myself very little leniency. So if it wasn’t beta’d in time, I’d get a little frustrated and I do not like to pester people. I also worry I’ll be told to edit and cut a LOT, and I don’t like to butcher my ‘fics. I do that enough while I’m writing 8D

30. What inspires you to write?

My faith. That is a BIG one. You will find references and metaphors to my faith throughout my stories. Particularly in The End and The Mask Behind the Monster. Music is another huge inspiration drive. I’ve come up with entire scenes and even plots or sub-plots listening to music. I was just on a walk listening to some cyberpunk tracks when I got the spark for The Mainframe Saga.

31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?

Oh boy. Where do I start? I think I was especially moved when someone told me they read The Mask Behind the Monster to their sisters.

32. Do you listen to music when you write or does music inspire you? If so, which band or genre of music does it for you?

Yes. A lot. I listen to a variety of stuff from Christian rock and EDM to cyberpunk instrumental tracks. Main bands are Thousand Foot Krutch, Family Force Five, Cruxshadows, Holon, Misanthropix, Scandroid and Celldweller.

33. Do you write oneshots, multi-chapter fics or huuuuuge epics?

It really varies. I lean towards epics. Even Glitched ended up being longer than planned, if memory serves, although it’s not epic length. The Mainframe Saga is made up of chaptered ‘fics, ficlets and one-shots.

34. What’s the word count on your longest fic?

I couldn’t tell you, because Scrivener crashes when I try to get the word count for System:Reboot XD

35. Do you write drabbles? If so, what do you normally write them about?

I don’t, but I have thought about it.

36. What’s your favourite genre to write?

Sci-Fi. Hands down.

37. First person or third person - what do you write in and why?

I prefer third person, particularly restricted third person, because it is easier to write about different characters. That way the reader knows what’s going on when the main cast do not. I was very surprised I enjoyed writing first person so much in Mask Behind the Monster, though. But I did leap into third person a couple of times to give a wider perspective.

38. Do you use established canon characters or do you create OCs?

I love creating OCs. But I will use canon characters in the Sonic fandom.

39. What is you greatest strength as a writer?

From what I’ve been told, character development.

40. What do you struggle the most with in your writing?

Violence. And tragic back stories. I have legit questioned my sanity when coming up with scenes that include this.

Also... when I write fluff... I kind of grind to a halt and struggle through it. Often interspersed with gazing from the window and thinking well further ahead than where I’m currently at. This often results in forgetting dialogue I think up during my garden gazing.

43. Is there anyone in your fandom who really inspires you?

Ambyssin has provided some amazing constructive criticism on System:Reboot which has resulted in me making a terrifying antagonist out of Gadget the Wolf. I strongly hope no other antagonists will develop what I have nicknamed ‘Socket Syndrome’. His drive and commitment to his writing has been pretty inspirational, too.

But in all fairness, I think most, if not all, of my writing friends have been inspirational and very supportive. I offer digital high-fives to each and every one of you.

44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?

I can’t think of any. People should write what they like. And I believe if you want to read it, and it doesn’t exist, then you should write it yourself if you can.

45. What is your all time favourite fanfic?

Guiding Light by Ambyssin. It’s not often I fall in love with a fanfic.

Fall From Power by Lordius Dannius is another.

46. If someone was to read one of your fanfics, which fic would you recommend to them and why?

The End or The Mask Behind the Monster, because they’re pretty special to me.

FFNet. I’ve been posting there for years. I’m iffy on AO3. I’ve considered posting to Tumblr, but my solution to that is to post links and artwork instead.

If I feel I have something to say, I’ll post a review. I like to make sure I do so, though, and I have been known to make notes on my computer and post reviews in bulk to works posted on Serebii.

49. Do you care if people comment/reblog your writing? Why/why not?

I love comments, and I will try to respond to each one. Reblogs are totally welcome!

50. How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?

I’ve been writing for many, many years. Since before I was ten years old. Pokemon likely got me into fanfiction. I can’t remember writing it for anything else prior to that cringy ‘fic I mentioned earlier (which we will never, ever talk about. Ever.)

51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!

I love the creativity behind it, especially OCs. Pokemon OCs are my favourites, particularly in PMD or Pokecentric settings. Both Sonic and Pokemon offer a lot of inspiration to create OCs as the worlds are both pretty vast. AUs and canon settings both offer massive scope for creativity. It’s seeing peoples’ headcanons and takes on the franchises that I really enjoy. Yes, I do like shipping, but a story does NOT need it to be a good story. It’s the way people tell it that matters more to me.

I know this says ‘one thing’. But I just want to make it clear, the one part of fanfiction I don’t like, is M-rated stuff. And I will not read it. It... bugs me when a ‘fic I’ve been enjoying suddenly changes its rating XD

ok, my tips are!!:

draw as much as possible! even if it’s just lines and shapes with no meaning, you’re still developing your hand/eye skills

BUT: dont draw if you’re not feeling it! if you’re feeling fried, it’s better to take a break. go on a walk to somewhere scenic, read your favorite book, listen to some new music, hang out with friends, or just take a nap! rest up and find some inspiration! you can come back to your sketchbook when you feel energized again

draw stuff that you like! you’ll improve way faster if you’re passionate about what you’re doing

look at art you like with a critical eye. try to examine the different components and figure out what you think works or doesn’t work. try incorporation those components into your own work

read a lot of tutorials and other resources, but take what they say with a grain of salt

ultimately, remember that the only real rule to drawing is that doing it should make you happy

YOI Headcanon: RPF Edition

After the Sochi banquet, Victor tried to Google Yuuri only to discover that the man had all the social media presence of a grandchildless baby boomer. He did stumble upon Phichit’s Instagram, which he promptly started stalking via his private account… and his search also uncovered fanfiction. RPF fanfiction. Erotic RPF fanfiction. A lot of it. And holy shit that was exactly what he’d needed when the real Yuuri bombed out of Japanese Nationals and Victor realized that they wouldn’t be meeting again at Worlds.

Simply reading was fine for a while, but eventually he found himself needing to comment (because PWP is fine and all but if you’re going to try to throw around skating terms you need to actually have some basic knowledge of the sport – the 6.0 scoring system has been gone for over a decade for fuck’s sake and seriously, Google is a thing that exists! Although it must be admitted that the old joke of the Russian judge being difficult to impress did make for some quality innuendo). So Victor created an account with a safely generic username. Strictly for commenting, of course. Commenting and kudosing. And subscriptions. And bookmarks. It was definitely not for writing. Even if literally nobody got Victor’s relationship with Chris anywhere close to right (in bed or out of it) and the seemingly universal depiction of a timid and virginal Katsuki Yuuri was just so goddamn laughable…

He got drunk, okay? Yakov had been extra critical during practice while Yuri Plisetsky alternated between sullen anger and dropping hints that the kid was clearly expecting would mean something to Victor. When Mila’s hockey-playing girlfriend showed up and the two of them disappeared into the locker room together, it was easy to sneak away during their coach’s inevitable explosion. Because it was all just so fucking pointless. So Victor went home, and he got drunk, and suddenly there were three thousand words in English about laughing cinnamon-cocoa eyes and a body that created its own music and why not just hit the post button at that point? The thing existed now after all, and he’d frankly felt more alive while writing it than he’d had in weeks.

“Ugh, why don’t you go write a/b/o Plisetsky fics like the other weirdos?”

“I find it hard to believe that any formal event much less an ISU-sponsored banquet would be equipped for pole dancing” …Okay, that one was entirely fair since most people didn’t know about the oddly specific real-life superpower that allowed Christophe Giacometti to materialize impossible NSFW objects on demand.

But there were some kudos and positive comments as well, and then HamsterToeLoop left an amazingly supportive review and holy shit they were one of Victor’s favorite authors and if they were encouraging him to keep writing then maybe it wasn’t literally the worst idea ever. And besides, he was having fun. So he wrote another story, a sweet and fluffy little Phichiyuu ‘fic that he knew that HTL would like, and gifted it to them as a thank-you. HTL quickly reciprocated with what they insisted on referring to as ‘spicy katsudon’, and before Victor knew it, LoveOfTheIce had a friend. And a rather large bibliography.

The problem with creating a body of work around fading memories of a single (amazing) alcohol-fueled evening and YouTube's library of competition clips is that you wind up with way too much F in your RP. Real!Yuuri was a surprise. A good one, once Victor got it into his thick skull that he wasn't ever going to be some kind of Japanese Christophe. But actually living with the man in question made Victor sit down and reflect on the sheer awkward weirdness of what he'd been doing for the last few months. It takes a certain caliber of person to write self-indulgent smut about someone once you know that they store their toothbrush in an ancient plastic My Melody mug, and Victor quickly discovered that he was not that man. But if Yuuri wasn't a living incubus, neither was he the ice angel that his fan club saw him as, and the trouble with writing is that it's a hard habit to get out of once you've started. Victor found himself delving into the for-him new territory of character study, and even some slice-of-life fluff. His porn-loving followers weren't impressed, but he was never writing for them anyway, and his new focus was helping him get a handle on his own feelings.

Shortly after Yuuri's announcement of his theme (or what Mari referred to as the nationally televised equivalent of sticking a note in Victor's locker asking him to check a box if he like-liked him), HamsterToeLoop gifted LoveOfTheIce a fic out of the blue. And... it was odd. It was short for HTL, just nine hundred words, and consisted of a single scene: Phichit Chulanont giving Victor Nikiforov the classic shovel talk. "I've been friends with Chris for years; do you think he wouldn't mention the GPF banquet?" the fictional(?!) Phichit remarked. Victor didn't delete his account in a panic, but that was mostly because after everything he'd heard about Yuuri's BFF he was pretty sure the man had backups of all of it anyway. He did leave a carefully neutral comment thanking the writer for giving him something to think about.

How did Yuuri find out in the end? Victor had no idea, but the love of his life hadn't blushed like that in ages. He threatened to disown both Victor and Phichit. He threatened to move in with Yakov. Hell, he threatened to move in with Yuri. But the outrage blew over as it always did -- Yuuri never could stay mad with either of them for very long -- and if a handful of very old Victor Nikiforov / Reader fics quietly vanished off of AO3? Neither Phichit nor Victor noticed or would have thought anything of it if they had.

STARTUPS AND SOMETHING

Before you develop a conscience, torture is amusing. Those they think rank below. What struck me at the time. Stocks will generate greater returns over thirty years, but they miss the critical point: it's good enough and free, these sites suggest that voters do a significantly better job than human editors. If you don't think you're weird, you're living badly. Lately hackerliness seems rather frowned upon. Along with such outright lies, there must have been to till the same fields your whole life with no hope of anything better, under the thumb of lords and priests you had to give all your surplus to and acknowledge as your masters. They didn't know. You're old enough to start a startup, anything might happen.1 Puberty finally arrived; I became a decent soccer player; I started a scandalous underground newspaper.

So by protecting their kids from risk, parents are, without realizing it, also protecting them from rewards. But even factoring in their annoying eccentricities, the disobedient attitude of hackers is a net win. People will pay extra for stability. And since good people like good colleagues, that means you should seek out ideas that would be the best supplier, but doesn't bid because they can't spare the effort to get verified. If the rich people in a society got that way by taking wealth from the poor, then you probably are. But he wouldn't, so we had to think of a way to make a lot of American kids, I read this book in school. In more recent times, Sarbanes-Oxley has practically destroyed the US IPO market.2 Less confident people feel they have to have an answer or they'll look bad. All you need to be moderately smart to succeed as a startup founder, but that you should start startups when you're young.3 That may even make you less able to start successful startups, if they tried, start successful startups, and who am I to argue with them?4 While there, the authorities fed you, prevented overt violence, and made some effort to conceal their flaws from children. Here's a clue.

In retrospect, I wonder how we could have wasted our time on anything so stupid. No thanks, intellectual homeowners may say, we don't need it. Increasingly, the brains and thus the value of 20 year old hackers who are too mature to pick on nerds will still ostracize them in self-defense. This sort of lie is not without its uses. They may represent one of those rare individuals with x-ray vision for character.5 Reading the Wall Street Journal for a week should give anyone ideas for two or three new startups.6 Now most kids have little idea what their parents do in their distant offices, and see no connection indeed, there is an increasing call for patent reform. Here's a test for deciding whether a VC's response was yes or no, or the deal was off.7

When you do, you've found an adult, whatever their age. That would leave the founders less than a seventh of the company if he'd let us have it. Why bother checking the front page of any specific paper or magazine? Most people who are high or drunk, poverty, madness, gruesome medical conditions, sexual behavior of various kinds, there has been a qualitative change in the atmosphere. You had to grow fast or die. I know they exist. It's odd that people think of programming as precise and methodical. Ditto for the idea of her having sex even if there were any language problems at Real Madrid, since the players were from about eight different countries. Someone has to watch over them, and that Kennedy was a speed freak to boot.

Most people would rather a 100% chance of $1 million than a 20% chance of $10 million.8 I've seen parents managing the subject, I can see how: questions about death are gently but firmly turned aside. To someone who likes work, as most good hackers do, this is torture. It's a bad plan to treat something only a hundred years old as an axiom.9 Misleading the child is just a byproduct. There is one case where the list of n things.16 Our first building had been a one-man show.17 I remember that feeling. When people say Web 2.18 You can probably start a startup right out of college. And if you find yourself asking should we allow users to do x? At first we did this because we couldn't help it. The most successful sites are the ones started by uncertain hackers rather than gung-ho business guys. It's not unusual for it to take five or six months to close a funding round.19 Ten years ago investors were looking for the next hot platform is that thousands of hackers have spontaneously started building things on top of this new trend. 0 is democracy.
