I’m wording this ask so terribly sorry.

So you know sans like the back of your hand and can pinpoint inaccurate portrayals of him but is it like that for the other members of the main cast too? Are there any characters you don’t really get in that way?

the funny thing is, as much as people think of me as a sans understander, the other members of the cast being more self-contained and confined to the narrative makes them a lot easier to puzzle out and put into context. undyne, alphys, asgore, toriel and flowey specifically. their roles are so crucial and defined by undertale's story that they almost work like the gears of a well oiled machine. not only are they characters in and of themselves, but with their backgrounds being available to the player and not left to speculation, every aspect of their personality become integral to What Happens In The Story as well.

when you take sans, on the other hand, his character is still so shrouded in lore and mystery that i do NOT doubt i'm also getting a fair bit of him wrong. he's an unknowable motherfucker. i can study his voice, what we know of him, and draw patterns in his behavior all i want, but at the end of the day there's still a good chunk of context to his character that is necessarily left to speculation. of course, we do have a LOT of lore for his character, and what that lore says seems... pretty direct, at least in terms of character goals and personality (he lost some people/somewhere important to him, he tried so hard to go home, he failed. he knows about the anomaly and it basically caused an existential crisis, however his first instinct was still to empathize with it. he takes everything life throws at him in stride because he doesn't believe in a happy ending anymore. he'll hold onto anything that proves him wrong)

you know who doesn't give you anything at all though?

FUCKING. PAPYRUS.

i do NOT get that guy. honest to god. sure, i can analyze his voice all the same, his personality and actions within the story, but papyrus is just as much of a lore mystery as his brother. with papyrus though? we get NOTHING. nada! he has the most lines out of any character and they tell you nothing about him. worse than that, what little info we get about sans' life "before" has almost no repercussions on papyrus whatsoever. homesickness who? scientific background who? knowledge of the anomaly who? sure, he's surprisingly strong and really passionate about puzzle construction. you can read into those aspects, but it's not anything that ties into any of sans' deal. which makes no sense because they're brothers, they got here together! why isn't sans' obvious baggage over his past something that connects them? at this point the only thing that makes sense to me is him being an amnesiac. which ig could tie into the whole "don't forget" motif. idfk man.

but like. that being said i can still more or less track the way he behaves around the other characters, the way he relates to them, his conflicts within undertale's main story etc. that's normal story analysis and pattern recognition. he's just... a bit trickier to puzzle out than the rest of the cast. goddamn him.

Deltarune!Papyrus is probably not a child

As absolutely adorable it would be if Papyrus was a babybones in Deltarune, I doubt that it’ll be the case.

I think for most people it’s just a fun what-if and that’s valid and I love it (I even have my own false-hopes that he’s in college with Asriel even though he’s probably not but let’s not get into it right now—)

I have seen a few people actually consider it though, and here’s the reason why I think it’s unlikely

(before we start I just want to clarify that I’m talking about theories on Papyrus being like 5-10 years old, not him being a teenager) ok let’s begin

Usually when people talk about Papyrus being a child in Deltarune, they talk about these first four lines:

For context, this is what Sans says in Chapter 2 if you have not talked to Sans in Chapter 1 about his brother

At face value, yeah, that obviously sounds like he’s implying his brother is a child

My first counterargument to that is the last line I included. Usually little kids don’t really have schedules, none that their guardian isn’t aware of. But whatever, that’s not actually what I wanted to talk about

The thing is, the whole stranger talk is a joke lol

Because letting his brother hang out with a stranger. in his house. alone. is literally exactly what he invited Kris to do in Chapter 1

(dialogue changes based on a few factors, which is why the list is kinda weird. tried to clean it up. hopefully you get the gist)

So yeah, it’s just a joke on how he’d never let his brother hang out with a stranger despite the fact that’s literally what he does lol

And Papyrus is almost definitely not a literal child because then it would actually be concerning if Sans was offering this suspicious teenager to hang out with Papyrus. alone. with emphasis on how he is not going to be there lmao

I don’t blame people for not catching this though, because as I said in the context, if you’re getting the lines about how he’d never leave his brother with a stranger, then you haven’t even seen the Chapter 1 lines. So this joke is mainly for Toby and us truck freaks lol

Anyway, keep drawing babybones Papyrus in Deltarune because it’s adorable.

Or better yet, you guys should draw Papyrus and Asriel being college besties to parallel Papyrus and Flowey’s friendshipifirhwhdjsej *explodes*

HI SORRY MEANT TO ANSWER THIS things have been busy 😔 but i would totally be ok with that!! my asriel would probably react similarly to how flowey did to chara in the no mercy route or he would faint immediately and then lock himself in a room for at least a week cuz hes kind of pathetic </3 i think the difference is that when flowey recognizes frisk as chara theres still room for doubt and its more like hes playing into the idea that chara could be back but if it was like. actually Just Chara. i think my asriel would probably react REALLY strongly and after his unreal amount of time in his hidey hole he will either go into people pleaser mode or resort to violence depending on how scared he is of them Leaving Forever whether that be them having friends other than him or dying again. oh he is just so regular <3

Was drawing gilvek last night in various outfits and i thought itd be interesting to doodle my "rules" for what kind of skirts i put them in? Ive mentioned them many times before particularly during the mario designs

Tarvek i base his outfits on 1. Agatha's Signal Dress 2. The Evil Agatha dress from Tarvek's imagination 3. Old illustrations of Ozma of Oz (it makes sense in my head)

In general i put him in fairly tight fitting clothes, unless its a dress or skirt. Then its drapey and flowey always. Theres exceptions to this though i always list these rules and then completely ignore them later. This is especially the case with modern aus. Tarvek can wear a bandage dress sometimes. As a treat

Gil doesnt have any examples of skirts that he seems to have feelings about one way or the other besides "wwooooow agatha... In a DRESS..." So i pretty much go off of what i think hed be comfortable wearing

Casual cute is better, frilly or decorated are a no unless of some requirement, likely to wear something under them, probably more interested in functionality than aesthetics, and i cant imagine him in something actually long (i think hed trip over them or get so frustrated hed rip them shorter anyway). I also have my doubts that hed wear anything "sexy" either. I think skifander and geister garb is a different circumstance, but i also tend to draw him in pants under the skirt when i draw Geister Gil anyway. It just seems like something he would do. Clothes stealing Papyrus headcanons pls?

Pfff heheh, okay so I’m just going to call him athleisure Papyrus and the reason I made him in the first place was because @mmhinman shared some brain rot with me that planted the idea that Papyrus borrowing my clothes would just end up looking like a crop top on him. I think we can agree Papyrus looks absolutely amazing in crop tops~

Now the first drawing I made of Papyrus borrowing a sweater was def meant to be more typical classic Papyrus. He was cleaning around the house and found your sweater draped over a chair in the bedroom. He was about to toss it in with the rest of the laundry but then it hit him, your scent, and it was lovely. The familiarity making his smile wider. Perhaps it didn’t need to go into the wash quite yet, it looked clean, it smelled pleasant, to him at least. As he turned the garment in his hands he thought to himself that it might even fit him, perhaps a bit short in length but he knew he could rock it. With an all too giddy expression he burst into his signature Nyeh Heh Hehs as he admired the fact that it did indeed fit and it looked so amazing in fact that he admitted he might be wearing it for a while.

Now then… I think what more people might be wondering about is the version I keep redrawing in the same athleisure outfit, where the top is more of a hoodie with a mesh front…….. WELLP……. I REALLY liked the idea of Papyrus borrowing my clothes and I love wearing cool but comfy athleisure and I was like dang… Papyrus wearing things that I consider “my style”…. yes please! Not to mention I love drawing a suave Papyrus with half lidded eyes. It’s more of a guilty pleasure as I fall deep into a Papyrus shaped simp hole lol but let’s jump into headcanons I have swirling around in my head for him.

Post Pacifist Papyrus, an undetermined amount of years on the surface have passed. Papyrus has finally had the chance to make more friendships, but has ultimately found satisfaction in his closer friendships with Undyne, Frisk, Sans, and Flowey. With no royal guard being needed he eventually turned his passion and drive into mastering the art of expertly crafting noodle dishes of every kind! Not only that but he has built a reputation with the local youth, for crafting the most clever and thrilling puzzle installments at the local parks (minus the spikes and flames… though he did try to make an argument for them) . Alright alright why am I saying all this you might wonder? What I’m trying to express is that Papyrus has built a life that he feels a lot more happy and content with. There is no longer a pressure to go above and beyond for what he wants, don’t get me wrong he definitely still goes above and beyond, but now it’s with more of a calm confidence. He may no longer struggle to gain friendship or recognition, but over the years he realized he’s still yearning for something…. or perhaps someone. It was love at first sight when he finally laid his eyes on you. There were no doubts, definitely not compared to all the other unsuccessful dates he had been on. This time he felt an instant connection. He may no longer be trying to capture a human but he was certainly looking to capture your heart. This Papyrus has definitely finished reading the dating hand book, and properly returned it to the librarby. In fact he’s read several more similar books on the surface and by similar books…. I mean he actually switched over to reading romance manga thinking they offered sound advice and examples of how to romance a potential date mate. Technically, Undyne was the one to suggest the manga route and Papyrus, always eager to learn about combat or cooking from a trusted friend, had no reason to question this advice. This inevitably lead him down a path towards reading romance novels and eventually….. fanfic (hehehehe LOL). So now we have a Papyrus with a cool confidence, fueled by the power of every romance trope, convinced that he knows how to sweep you off your feet and make you fall for him. Well it worked, because the two of you are dating and he can tell how much you’re enjoying every second of it. Papyrus just can’t help how much he loves seeing how effective all his research was because it reliably gets you to blush your brightest when he puts it to use. Every win just fueling his confidence further and further, he has no doubt that his next plan will work like a charm and you can see it from his expression too.…. hmmm yeah those are the thoughts swirling in my head for now related to clothes stealing, athleisure Papyrus hahaha

Speaking of Deltarune, i dunno if you've talked about it before but What's your general opinion on Papyrus' role in DR? i've ben thinking about this a lot after it came to my attention how much of a mystery he really is. The thought that he could be the knight is both kinda funny and kinda scary (also and correct me if im wrong, but if DR's story was here before UT was made, i can imagine Toby going "hehe what if i made Papyrus (my antagonist) a goofy comic relief in this)

oh this was sent so long ago... um...

ok anyway. even though it's taken me several months to answer this. i'm so glad you asked!

there's a lot about papyrus that's shrouded in mystery - namely the sheer amount of power he seems to have compared to the rest of the cast and the evolution of his relationship with flowey over the timelines. it makes logical sense that deltarune will elaborate on what undertale only hinted at, but like.

the theory that he's the knight doesn't click with me. if someone wants to explain where this conclusion is being drawn from, i'd love to hear it! because - and no offense - it just feels like the title of The Knight is being slung onto him solely because he's a powerful character we kind of don't know a lot about (but that's like 85% of the cast at this point..) and we have yet to see him. i won't write it off entirely because who knows what will happen with this game, but i do very much doubt that the insight deltarune will give us into papyrus's character will be through him being. The Knight.

my personal thoughts on the knight's identity are, like... among these possibilities:

the knight is a character we haven't even been introduced to yet

there is no singular knight and it's simply a role that anyone can take on. the darkners' concept of The Knight is an amalgamation of every person who has opened a fountain ever

there is no knight. like at all. this is on a similar vein of the above bullet: because it's just a conceptual role, there just is no fucking knight 👍🏾

it really Is kris, and this reveal was made in Chapter Two because the identity of the knight is ultimately inconsequential in comparison to the concepts and plot points future chapters will introduce.

perhaps i just have a very particular and even incorrect interpretation/assumption of what the knight's role in this game will be. but at the moment, i'm not going to be easily swayed from these ^ theories. so.. as cool and kinda funny as it Could be, no knight papyrus in this house. it doesn't make sense. to me. with how i've come to understand the knight (which is to say i barely understand the knight at all because we literally barely have any tangible info about it).

(oh but even if he is the knight, i don't think this would make him the narrative's antagonist. i don't think deltarune is going to have a conventional protagonist VS protagonist set-up, period. also i wouldn't call papyrus in undertale a comic relief. does him quite a bit of injustice i think ^^')

i'm not even wholly convinced that the build-up around papyrus won't be some sort of red herring. like, yeah i think he'll play a fairly substantial role (maybe. my initial assumption from chapter 1 was that when we do finally get to hang out with papyrus, he'll just be like. normal. like sans is. and nothing ever happens with him. and i'm not writing this possibility out yet afgngkjf), but not necessarily to the extent that people are assuming. i think there's a lot of other weird shit in hometown that no one is paying attention to because the "a trousle.. growing further away..." flavor text is so fucking distracting. and i think that's on purpose. we're so focused on what we already know from undertale and drawing those connections that everything new and unique to deltarune is kinda flying over our heads. like honestly i personally don't give a damn about papyrus rn (I LOVE HIM BUT) i'm more concerned with, like:

the strange beast that attacked the dog burglars by the holidays' house

whatever the hell is happening with onionsan and the song they're hearing

the fucking caution tape

father alvin muttering to himself over gerson's grave

hometown's religion in general honestly

the bunker?

asgore's soul-colored flowers and the fact that he said they're "exactly" like the rose from the beauty and the beast when sans joked about it (did he mean that in terms of the glass jars or something more ?)

the striped bird npc

temmie's egg

clamperson

hometown's got a lot going on. yes we love papyrus yes the trousle getting further away is weird and concerning but i don't think it's going to be as important as everything else <3..

“KEEP IN MIND, AS MUCH AS YOU GUYS DISLIKE TORI… SHE’S THE REASON WHY MY PASTA FINALLY TASTES AS GREAT AS ME!” How would Sans + Undyne + Alphys all react to learning that ‘Tori’ (who they don’t know is the Queen) had improved Papyrus’ cooking skills? 💀🍽️🍝

Honestly? I'm not sure. Give me a bit to think about it.

They'd definitely be stunned for a moment & sort of chastised at the fact that they'd been caught in a pack of lies.

They might argue that they were trying to spare his feelings, to which he might reinforce the fact that he's not made of glass. Question them on how they thought that he'd improve if he never got honest & constructive criticism? Then telling them that there are ways to tell the truth in a way that isn't jerkish.

And, he might not say it out loud, but he might think in his mind that they were both very cowardly.

Keep in mind, I do think that Papyrus is very forgiving, but would only do so if he believed that someone was really & genuinely sorry & admitted as much. In this way, his own stubbornness & theirs could end up butting heads until one of them gives.

Now, while I think that Sans would give up the quickest, he wouldn't be genuine in it & would cling, unshakingly, to his own prejudices for a good long time. So, provided that Pap clocked this fact, he still might not forgive him for a while.

On the other hand, I see Undyne as being more likely to have doubts about her convictions first, but would keep ramming her head against the wall in stubbornness, not wanting to admit this fact to anyone. Not even herself. So, very deep in denial.

I think that it'd take the very foundations of their beliefs being utterly shattered in a single fell swoop to change their minds. Something incontrovertible. I'm talking proof that they can see with their actual eyes & hear with their actual ears.

For Undyne, it might be the Amalgamates & the realization of what Alphys & Sans did to make this atrocity possible. After all, it's implied that the bodies of the humans were dissected as there were 7 morgue coolers in the True Lab. Not to mention that the souls had their Determination extracted then injected into the fallen down monsters. Add to this the proof that human souls retain their sentience after death (as per the Flowey battle) & the implication is that Alphys & Sans has been torturing these kids for who knows how long.

I could even see Undyne having a panic attack over it.

Just an eff ton of dark stuff.

Which, BTW, that's another thing I didn't like about the monsters. It's told that the soul holds everything that makes you, you, but they treat the human souls like simple batteries.

It's possible that, since their own souls crumble immediately upon death, that they are unaware that human souls retain a degree of awareness & sentience after death. (Again, as shown by the Flowey battle. The human souls are literally the only ones in the game to come to Frisk's aid when they call.) Maybe it doesn't even occur to them because, in their own minds. You die, you're done. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. So, it's possible that it doesn't even cross their minds that humans are just fundamentally different.

Which is possibly how they're all so okay with what's happening. Ignorance. Possibly even denial. Like, I don't doubt that some monsters have thought about it & there are likely even those who are vocal about it. However, I definitely think that many would try to brush the thought away & ignore it to protect themselves.

I can't even imagine the reaction if they were to be confronted with the truth.

Keep in mind that it's nearly impossible for humans to do something like this to monsters (without the help of another monster) as far as we know. As such, it isn't likely that many humans have ever committed these crimes against monsters & if they have, it'd all be kept hidden (I'm talking black market dealings) & would definitely not just be the humans faults. Because from what we're told, humans can't draw out souls. Meaning this wouldn't be a case of what goes around comes around or karma.

I mean it's possible, but we only confirmed know that monsters have.

Either way, with the information we currently have, this is an evil that could not be facilitated without a monster.

Sure, Sans could try to justify it by saying that if humans could do it, then they would've, but then he'd basically be "reading people's minds" & crucifying them before they've even done anything. Also, just saying that doesn't make it okay to do it themselves & I think that Undyne would realize this.

It's Alphys that I don't think would ever have an issue with Tori. Though, she'd certainly be surprised. It's possible that she'd take all this talk of honesty to heart, but in the end, is too much of a coward to admit anything until very late.

Hi there Chari!

Wanted to get a second opinion on how flowey would potentially react to either percieved abandonment due to not being able to spend as much time as he'd like around people he like or them growing somewhat distant from changes in schedules

And for the sake of simplicity, let's say its post pacifist or any scenario where he can't reset to a time before this happened

Oooh, this is a tough one. I'll try to draw evidence from canon here.

His sense of being abandoned by Toriel is arguably the strongest, and he seems to spend a great deal of time in the ruins—I can't tell if its just him feeling that it's his element, or him wanting to spend time with her despite not wanting to let her know his real identity. Possibly both.

He's very free to come and go as he pleases, so I imagine he just shows up often around people he like. Maybe the frequency increases if he's feeling particularly neglected, and if push comes to shove he does something just bad enough but not really terrible to get their attention. And maybe the other person eventually catches on that oh, you're feeling left out.

(When in doubt, I think of Flowey as something of a spoiled brat. It works to some degree)

...but this is a very loose speculation, and I could also see other ways it could play out, including but not limited to feeling that maybe he did something for the other person to leave, or trying to convince himself that he doesn't deserve their friendship. See-sawing between superiority and inferiority complex.

My doodle of Punchy. I don’t know how to draw animal legs, so it was... a challenge to say the least.

I really wanted to draw teenager Justin. it’s sad that he never grows to be old enough for this appearance to be, ya know, relevant. But I really wanted to draw him. I might draw the other’s as the same age too, it’s cute to think of honestly. He’d probably end up living with one of his friends, so good for him! I imagine he’d work as a paper boy. One: Hat. Two: Outdoors and he gets to throw things. He’d be so unusually enthusiastic for his job but when you used to work at a bar, anything is going to feel like a major improvement.

And of course, I used this design to make some tomfuckery. At this age, him and Adrian would absolutely be dating and this is some of the jokey bullshit he’d pull for sure. Idk if my hand writing is good enough so here’s the dialog.

Justin: Suurprise!~

Adrian: WH-!? Justin, get down before you hurt yourself!

Justin: I’m taller then you now!

Adrian: No, you’re still short dork.

Justin: The tree says otherwise~

Now this is a doodle for @ask-the-six-human-souls, based on a roleplay we were doing. In that rp, Paxton and Lucas got really close and so I just had to think of “Alright, how would Flowey sabotage their friendship to make it harder for him to save Paxton in phase 2?” And this is it.

For context, to get all the human souls Flowey needs to not only grab the souls but the owners of said souls. So any rp or scenario would start with the children gradually disappearing one by one, from Paige to Justin. Paxton definitely would catch on, but not gets grabbed by Flowey too. So my prosumption for the situation is that due to the disappearances of Paige, Bentley and Isabelle they would start pairing up with the other human souls to make it harder for Flowey to take them- if he is the one doing it, since they don’t know for sure what is causing the disappearances. Either way, just watching them to make sure no one wanders off at the least.

And along the way, Lucas would get distracted by something fascinating- presumably a mushroom lighting up, a quiet whisper, etc which gives Flowey the chance to grab Paxton. I doubt he’d endanger him on purpose, more just absentmindedly not realizing how big of a deal this situation is. He probably doubts Flowey is behind it and thinks the kids may be exploring or something.

Now, how did he stop the child from immediately screaming? Vines around the neck and chest to suppress his lungs. Thus screaming would’ve hurt like hell and he’s too out of breath to scream. Since Paxton can’t talk Flowey didn’t have to completely restrict his throat and risk killing him. As long as he couldn’t scream, it was fine to him.

And he also decided to be a bit playful and use this time to build a wedge between the two children by telling Paxton that he’ll take his book so he can’t use magic words, but that if Lucas sees or hears them- as he’s only a few feet away- he will let him go without a fight. So Paxton started kicking one of the rocky edges to try and get Lucas’ attention. Obviously, it doesn’t work and Paxton’s insecurities get the better of him. He knows, somewhere, that Lucas isn’t doing this on purpose, but he is scared and beyond frustrated that Lucas isn’t doing his ONE job because he wasn’t taking his safety seriously enough and it made him doubt if he really cared. Flowey used this insecurity to get under his skin, causing problems later on.

Lucas only realized it once he is in phase 2, as he grows openly resentful towards Lucas and Lucas has to deal with the wedge Flowey made as well as his soulless traits.

crying shaking thinking about how kusuo knows nobody actually understands his personality at all. he sees all their fantasies of chiyo trying to date him and kaidou trying to protect him and all of them are wildly out of character. it makes for good comedy but it very obviously upsets him.

i think that's why when teruhashi said "i wish saiki were here. even if he would just sit with a blank expression the whole time", saiki actually smiled at that and noted it. saiki has to hide a lot of himself from other people so when someone actually understands him it really means a lot.

and then theres the suprise birthday scene. saiki is floored when his friends actually realise that saiki isnt acting like himself- he assumed that they would prefer him as more outgoing and actually thinks he would ruin his own birthday party by showing up.

Bark at the Moon Chapter 10: Dissonance

Chapter Warnings: None

Chapter Summary: Papyrus is ready to go home. Undyne knows he can’t.

Papyrus tapped his tail impatiently against the cavern floor. Undyne was running late again, and he was tired of waiting. Not just for her, today, but of all of this--holding himself back and being held back by his state. People missed him! He was tired of being cooped up! He hated not being able to help! Original body or not, he wanted to rejoin society, not hide from it. He wasn't sure he'd go by the same name--if it came to it, he was Parchment, Papyrus' distant but nearly identical and no less handsome cousin, coming to look after the house while he was away. Why he hadn't thought of such a brilliant idea sooner, he wasn't sure, and he'd almost be disappointed if he couldn't put it to use.

But he wanted to run it by Undyne first--a key part of it was her reintroducing him. No one would attack him if she were right there! He wasn't sure why anyone would attack him to begin with, but if things really were that bad... well, better to be safe. And then he could work to keep everyone safe, finally proving himself! He couldn't wait for Undyne to return so he could relay his flawless plan.

In the meantime, he'd busied himself with charcoal drawings or worked through the puzzles in the latest edition of the Snowdin newspaper--come now, they'd published that same puzzle six months ago! He did his best to not remember the answers and complete it, but someone had dropped the ball. He released his frustrations by gleefully shredding the rest of the paper, then settled down to read one of his books until Undyne got done with her shift.

He perked up when her faint footsteps echoed up the passage, and hurried to pack up his things before waiting at the entrance eagerly. Today was the day! He would finally, maybe, actually think about not hiding anymore!

"Well hey punk, ready to go, huh?" Undyne said when she emerged, giving him the slightest noogie. He noted she looked tired.

"Yes! When we get back, I would like to discuss something--but, how goes the investigation? Any new developments?"

Undyne turned to head back, and he followed along as she spoke. "It's gotten worse. At first people were only getting a little scraped up, but a couple days ago someone lost half their HP to an attack. The weird thing is, no one's seen the perpetrator at all--not even their bullets so we can narrow down who it is..."

Papyrus furrowed his brow. "And you're sure I can't help?"

Undyne's face hardened. "Yes."

"But my observational skills are unparalleled! And in this form, I have a sense of smell at least as good as any of the dogs, and agility and speed and--"

"No," Undyne stated. "Not with the town on high alert for anything they don't recognize. Did you ever meet Gyftrot? They got attacked the other day by the bear family, and they're just kind of a recluse. I'm not letting you go out into that."

Papyrus grit his teeth. "But I'd be with you! And if I'm with you then I'm a friend! I wanted to wait until we were at your house but I have a plan--"

Undyne whirled on him. "NO. The Guard is handling this!"

"And I am going to be on the Guard!" he barked back, stamping his forefeet down.

Undyne froze, her expression tight before she spun to march down the hall. "You need more training."

Papyrus watched her for a moment, then leapt to keep up, steadying his breathing. "And this is a perfect hands-on experience! It's not a human, otherwise you'd be much more excited, so it must be some poor monster who's lost their way and needs guidance! And I am the best at guiding!"

"It's not that!"

"I'm confused. I can't help because I need more training... but that's not why I can't help?"

"Ugh, don't worry about it. Come on, let's just relax for the rest of the evening," Undyne huffed, marching off again. "We'll talk about it later."

Papyrus watched her go, a lot of thoughts he didn't like swirling in his skull. He wanted, more than anything, to trust Undyne. She was trying to look out for him, he knew that--but only a few days ago she had more or less called him a puppy, and now said he needed more training. She always said that, every time he'd asked. He was getting the sense... she didn't think he could handle the responsibility.

Well, he needed to prove he was responsible! Somehow! He needed to...

He needed to stop hiding. To stop holding himself back--though, he always would in battle. Always, even if Undyne never understood. He was always going to be himself, and if she didn't think that was good enough... then she was missing out. And he had to stand up for himself.

It was scary, though. What if she ended up not liking him, or didn't want to be his friend anymore? Then, his friend quantity would drop down... well, even closer to zero than it usually was. He didn't usually count Sans, but now... he didn't even have him. Lost in thought, he tripped over the uneven ground, and Undyne looked back at him.

"You okay?"

"Yes! I am, as always, great!"

"Hah, glad to hear it. Not much farther now."

They rounded the corner, and the sight of Undyne's house filled Papyrus with a sudden dread. He stopped in his tracks, staring at it as realization dawned on him. He'd traded one prison for another. What was the difference if he stayed in his house, Undyne's house, or the chamber he hid out in while she was gone? No matter how much room one had over the other... he was just doing the same thing over and over again.

"Papyrus?"

He bolted, running in the other direction. He couldn't do it anymore, he had to--

Ping!

Green soul magic locked him in place, and he whirled to snarl at her.

"Hey!" she barked, baring her own teeth. "Cut it out! What do you think you're doing?!"

Papyrus' voice wanted to come out rough--he was just so frustrated--but he shut his eyes and waited until he'd calmed down. He cleared his throat and put on a bright smile to address her. "I just remembered it's been a long time since I checked my profile on the Undernet. I probably have a lot of new likes and friend requests to accept!"

To say that Undyne didn't look convinced didn't seem to cover it.

"Plus! Maybe Sans is home! And I know no one's vacuumed since I left, do you really expect him to do it? The house is probably a total wreck!"

Somehow, her disbelief deepened.

"Please Undyne. I want to go home, just for a little bit. I don't care if anyone sees me anymore--your confidence training worked! No doubt because I was already confident!"

Now she just looked sad. She sighed, and pinched her brows. "I'm sorry Papyrus. I know you want to--and that's great you're not worried about people seeing you anymore! That's awesome! But... Like I told you. There's a lot going on in Snowdin right now, and it's dangerous for someone who won't..."

"Won't what?"

Undyne glowered, and looked away. "Nevermind."

"Won't what, Undyne? If there's something I need to do to for you to let me go, I'll do it! Just like I'll do anything to get into the Guard!"

Undyne grit her teeth, then shut her eye and jammed her spear into the ground with a grunt. "... That's the thing. You WON'T do it. It's the one thing I could never GET you to. You always had some--some reason against it, some dumb logic I could never let you go into battle with!"

Papyrus stood stiffly, and it had nothing to do with Undyne's spell. Was she saying what he thought she...?

"I'm sorry, Papyrus. I never told you, because I didn't want to upset you. But... I can never let you join the Royal Guard."

Papyrus stared at her. "What?"

She winced. "I can't. You're... you're too nice, too cheerful--even if your life depended on it, you'd... you'd never finish a human off. Even though you KNOW everyone is counting on that soul."

Papyrus quivered. "...We don't have to kill them."

"You want to be free, don't you?" Undyne shot with a snarl. "What do you think we should do, just--wait for however long it takes for them to die naturally? Keep everyone--all your friends, you, me, the whole kingdom--trapped down here for decades when we could have it instantly?!"

"I--" Papyrus halted--then buckled down. He was going to do this. "Yes. I'll make friends with them, and we'll have a very nice time together until their life comes to an end. If they really like us, they will be happy to know their soul will continue their very cool friend's happiness even after they're gone! Isn't that better than killing someone who doesn't even deserve it?"

Undyne growled. "They're a human! They ALL deserve it! Joining the Royal Guard is accepting that we are at WAR with humanity, NOT making friends with them! And THAT'S why I can't let you in. You'll... you'll just get torn to pieces. I'm sorry, Papyrus. But I can't."

Papyrus clenched his jaw. "...Okay."

Undyne blinked at him. "...Okay?"

"I should have seen it coming, really." He really wasn't surprised. "But it's fine! I'll just find something else to form my entire personality around!"

Undyne flinched. "Listen--you really are strong--don't think that I think you're not. But... you don't have the right mindset for the Guard. If it helps... we... can still do cooking lessons and spar together and stuff. I don't wanna stop being friends. But... we can't be coworkers too."

Well, at least he had that. "I'm glad! But! I really would like to go home... and since it's not a human, I don't need to worry about hurting anyone! So it's fine! Really!"

"It's NOT fine!" Undyne insisted, sweeping her hand. "I can't let you go when the WHOLE FREAKIN' TOWN is looking for--"

"Howdy!" Flowey popped up between them, and narrowly missed getting hit by a spear. "Hey!"

"Sorry," Undyne, said quickly. "Um. Can I help you?"

"Well, I'm sure sorry to interrupt, but I thought you should know... that guy you were looking for? Whatsisface, Sand?"

"Sans?!" Papyrus supplied, excitement barely contained.

"Yeah! I heard he's back!" Flowey continued. "Seems like he's looking for someone too... um... Paper?"

Papyrus uttered a weird, sharp chirp. He looked to Undyne desperately, and she looked from him back to Flowey.

"Uh. Alright, well, we'll check in on him shortly. Thank you."

"No problem! See ya!"

And just like that, he'd disappeared back into the earth. Papyrus vibrated in place. This had been an incredibly welcome interruption.

"Please! There's no excuse now! We have to go, I have to see him!"

Undyne sighed and dropped her magic at last. "Yeah, okay. Let me get my armor on, and you have to stay by me at ALL T--"

But Papyrus was already gone.

Sorry to butt in but your characterization of Asriel when he was younger was a bit weird. I feel like grown up Asriel and Flowey's is good, since he became wiser but also not nicer during the time as Flowey. But I feel like young Asriel will not saying outright mean stuffs. I can see him saying "what's wrong with you", dolls are for little kids and "my drawing is better than yours" (all are little kids unknowingly hurting words) but the other two are kind too blunt for him.

i doubt flowey’s “you’re an IDIOT” line came from no where. its a very childish aspect of flowey, calling frisk names like “braindead” and “stupid” or “brat” or whatever. kids can tease or say mean things without really intending to, or are not aware of badly their actions will be perceived as.

we know asriel really looked up to and respected chara. we see afr chara say mean things like this all the time, he could be mimicking or internalizing things they’ve said before. (or even what other kids at the playground have said! its not like they only interacted with each other)

its not farfetched for asriel to act like this lmao. in canon we only truly get to understand flowey/asriel because chara makes him remember how they met and were loved as siblings. frisk doesn’t know asriel well. we as a spectator don’t get to know asriel any better. we get a very limited and biased view of him
