Love Online
Chapter 12
Warings: mention of that time of the month, then the rest is just sweet, a few sad moments or hard ones. But I don't think there is anything else I need warn about. Hope I didn't forget anything.
The next morning Merida awoke and smelled pancakes. She smiled. She got up and what she saw made her scream.
            "Oh no!"
She rushed to the bathroom and searched her cabinets but couldn't find what she was looking for.
"No! This isn't happening! Please no!"
Then she heard a knock on the door.
           "Babe, you okay?"
            "No!"
"What's wrong? Can I come in?"
            "Yeah I guess."
Chris opened the door and walked into her room. He found her on the floor in bathroom with her head between her legs. He squatted down in front of her. He was only in a pair of grey sweat pants. Right away Merida noticed his tattoos on this chest and arms.
"Babe, what's wrong? Are you hurting again?"
            "No," she cried.
            "Then what's wrong?"
            "I..."
            "What is it?"
            "I started and I..."
"Oh, well it's okay. Why are you crying about that?"
"Because I...I woke up to a stain on my sheets and don't have anything. I didn't realize I was out and I..."
"I can go to the store and get you what you need."
"Oh Chris, I can't ask you to do that."
"You didn't ask me. I volunteered. I don't mind babe. I'll get you whatever you need. Just tell me what to get."
            "Are you sure? I mean...you're a..."
            "I'm a what?"
             "You're a guy."
Chris laughed. "I don't mind. Remember I grew up with sisters. It doesn't bother me."
            "Are you sure?"
"Yes babe. Just tell me what you need."
"Pads. Make sure they say over night."
"Okay. Do you want me to get your medicine while I am out too?"
            "You don't mind?"
"Not at all. Where is it?"
            "At the Walmart pharmacy."
"Okay. Is there more than one Walmart?"
"Yes, but it's the closest one."
"Okay, I'll find it. Is there anything else you need?"
"No. Thanks Chris. You really don't have to do this. I..."
            "Babe, I don't mind. I'll be back."
            "Chris?"
            "Yeah."
            "Were you fixing breakfast?"
"Yes. I was fixing pancakes, but I can finish when I get back. Just text me if you think of anything you need alright?"
"Thanks Chris. You're the greatest. I love you."
Chris kisses her softly on the lips. "Love you too. Be back soon."
Chris's POV
I throw on a t-shirt and grab my hat and keys and am out the door. I hop in my car and quickly pull up my GPS and find the closest Walmart and plug it in. It only takes me fifteen minutes to get there. I walk in and find the pharmacy and go up to the desk and tell them I am picking up medicine for Merida Owens. They ask for her birthday and I tell them and after paying for the medicine I go to the aisle where pads are located.
"Shit! There are so many! Which kind do I get?"
I look for a long time. Then a lady sees me struggling and smiles.
"Excuse me, can I help you find something."
"Uh...I was getting something for my girlfriend but I have no idea what to get. There are so many choices. I only know she told me to make sure they say over night."
"This is going to sound like a strange question but does she have heavy periods?"
            "Uh...yes I think so."
The lady then picks up a pack and holds it out to me.
"Try this one. Oh and I recommend these too."
She holds out a box of tampons.
"Uh..thanks so much. I would have been standing here for hours. I had no idea there were many!"
The lady laughs.
"Your welcome. Glad I could help. I know what it's like. You're a good boyfriend getting these for your girlfriend. I don't know many guys who would do that." She smiles.
I smile back. "Thanks and I try."
I take the items to the check out counter and pay for them and then head back to her house.
End of Chris's POV
Chris walks into the house and calls out to Merida.
            "Merida! Babe."
She doesn't answer. He walks back to her bedroom and finds her still sitting on the bathroom floor.
"Babe," he squats down in front of her and rubs her leg
"I got what you asked for."
She looks up at him.
            "Chris."
"Hey. I got you the pads."
            "Thanks."
She opens the bag and takes out the pads and then pulls out the tampons.
            "You got me these too?"
"Yeah I had no idea what to get. If it wasn't for a lady helping me I might have still been there. I had no idea there were so many choices! She recommended those."
"Oh, well I can't wear these. I only wear the pads." She said bitting her lower lip.
            "Oh, why not?"
"Uh...I....I've never been able to get them in and..."
"Oh okay. Well I'll go finish breakfast just come to the kitchen when your ready."
He stands up and starts to leave.
            "Chris?"
            "Yeah?"
            "Thanks." She says standing up.
"Your welcome." He kisses her lips.
"Oh, can you take the medicine to the kitchen for me?" She asks holding out the bag,
            "Sure."
Chris then leaves the room. After Merida is ready she heads to the kitchen. She finds Chris standing at the stove. She walks up to him and wraps her arms around him. He turns and kisses her head.
            "Hey beautiful. All better?"
            "Yes thank you so much."
"Your welcome. The pancakes are almost done."
"Okay. I will get plates out."
Merida reaches up to the cabinet next to stove and gets two plates down and two mugs.
            "Would you like coffee?"
            "Yes please."
            "What kind do you want?"
            "Kind?"
            "Yeah. I have all kinds."
            "Just plain coffee."
            "Okay."
Merida puts a plain coffee pod into her Keurig and puts a mug under it. After its done she grabs herself a French Vanilla one. After hers is done she grabs the creamer from the fridge and pours a little into hers.
"Which cabinet had the plates? I need one for the pancakes."
            "Beside the stove top left."
Chris grabs a plate and puts them on it and places the plate on the island.
            "Its ready."
Merida looks over and sees they are Mickey Mouse shaped.
            "Aww you made Mickey ones!"
They both take a seat at the island after Merida gets the syrup from her cabinet. Chris puts two pancakes on a plate for her. He gives himself two as well.
            "Thanks Chris."
            "Your welcome babe."
"Can I ask you a question?"
            "Sure, what's up?"
"I noticed this morning you have a lot of tattoos."
Chris smiles.
"Yes, I've gotten a lot over the years."
            "What do they all mean?"
"Can I take my shirt off?"
            "Uh...yeah sure."
Chris puts down his fork and takes off shirt and lays it on the chair beside him.
"Right here," he points to his right arm. "It means loyalty. This one," he points to his right rib. "Is in memory of a friend who died, who is always with me. This one," he points to his left chest. "Buddhist teaching. And this one on my left arm is Tarus zodiac for my mom. The one between my chest is Dodger, you know who that is." He smiles. "Then a lion head," he points just above his pants on his left side. "And a star, for Captain America." He says pointing on the other side of the lion head. "Oh and the eagle on my chest." He then points to the inside of his left bicep,"This the avengers one we all got except for Ruffalo, he chickened out. I also have one on my ankle for all my siblings."
            "Wow, that's a lot!"
Chris smiles. "Do you have any?"
"Uh no! I'm afraid of needles. I hate getting shots! I'm not about to get a tattoo. Are you crazy?"
            "It's not that bad."
            "I think I'll pass."
"We could get one together. I would be right there with you."
            "You mean like matching ones?"
            "Sure if you want."
            "What would we get?"
"I don't know. Maybe something Disney. I know we both love Disney."
            "Uh...I don't know."
Chris picks up his phone from the Island. "Let me look online and see if I can find some ideas."
Chris searches for several minutes then says, "How about this one?" He shows her the head of mickey and Minnie.
            "Uh...that's cute but no."
Chris looks again.
"Oh I just had an idea, maybe."
            "What's that?"
"How about the rose from Beauty and the Beast?"
            "Oh that's a good idea."
"I could get the last petal falling and it could mean that..."
"Your my one true love?" Chris finishes for her.
"Yeah and I hold the key to your heart."
"I love that! I could get the whole rose."
"So where would we put it?"
"How about on our chest near our hearts?"
            "I guess that would work."
             "I'm excited! Let's go."
            "Now?"
"Sure. We can get cleaned up and go now. I remember seeing one when I went to Walmart this morning."
"I can't believe you talked me into this."
"It will be okay. I'm sure you will be glad you did and even decide to get another one."
            "I doubt it."
"I'll clean up the kitchen, you go ahead and get ready."
"No I can clean up. You cooked."
            "I don't mind."
            "No you go first please."
"Alright." Chris leans forward and gives her light kiss on the lips then heads towards his room. Merida cleans up the kitchen and washes their dishes and then heads towards her room. She looks for what she wants to wear. She searches through her closet. She picks out her outfit.
Tumblr media
She gets her shower and quickly gets dressed. She applies a little makeup and then walks into the living room and finds Chris sitting on the couch with Dixie sitting next to him.
            "Hey babe. You look beautiful."
            "Thanks."
            "So you ready to go?"
"I guess so. I'm still not sure about this. I'm scared."
Chris gets up from the couch and walks towards her and wraps his arms around her.
"It will be okay I promise. I will be right there with you and hold your hand."
Merida smiled. She grabbed her purse and they walked out the door. Chris held the door for her of his car.
"Do you know where your going?"
            "I think so."
They drove about twenty minutes before Chris pulls into a parking lot of a small tattoo place.
            "Are you ready?"
            "No." Merida frowns.
Chris turns so he is facing her and takes her hands. "It will be okay babe. I will be there. I won't force you of course if you don't want to, but I think you will be glad you did. I would love to have a tattoo with you."
Merida smiles. "I love you Chris, so much. I want to, but..."
"It's okay. I know your scared and it will only hurt for a second and then it will done."
"I can't believe I am agreeing to this. I never thought I would do this."
Chris smiles. "Lets go."
Chris climbs out and walks around to her side and holds the door for her. Merida climbs out and after Chris shuts the door he takes her hand and they walk in together.
"Good morning. How can I help you?" A tall man covered in tattoos says.
"We would like to get tattoos." Chris says.
"Okay. Do you know what you want?"
"Yes." Chris pulls out his phone and shows him pictures.
"Okay sure, I can do that. Who's going first?"
Chris looks at Merida. She shakes her head. Chris laughs. "I'll go first."
"Alright hop onto that chair," he says pointing to a black chair.
Chris sits in the chair and Merida sits in the chair close by and watches.
            "Which one do you want?"
"This one," Chris says showing him.
Tumblr media
"Alright. Where do you want it?"
Chris takes off shirt and holds it in his lap and points to the left side of his chest near his heart.
The man then starts drawing the tattoo onto Chris's chest. Merida watches and can't believe that Chris hasn't flinched once. He sits there so calmly not moving. At one point he looks over at her and smiles. She smiles back but he can tell she looks scared. When the man finishes he stands back. "All done."
            "Thanks. Babe, come here."
Merida walks towards Chris. He takes her hand. "What do you think?"
Merida looks at the tattoo. "I like it, it looks good."
            "You ready to get yours?"
Merida shakes her head. "It will be okay. I will be right here with you. It will be okay I promise." He kisses her hand.
"Let me cover it before you get up."
The man covers the tattoo. "I know I don't need to tell you what to do, you've done this before," the man smiles.
"Yep." Chris stands up and puts his shirt back on. Merida sits down. Chris starts to walk away but Merida grabs his hand.
            "No! Don't leave me!"
"I'm not going anywhere babe. Promise. I was just going over there." He said pointing to the chair across from her.
"No, stay beside me. You promised you would hold my hand."
Chris smiles. "Okay babe." Chris holds her hand as the man gets everything ready.
"Okay. So this is your first tattoo right?"
            Merida nods her head.
"Okay, this will hurt a little but you will get use to it and it won't be bad. You ready?"
Merida closes her eyes and nods her head.
"Do you want yours the same place as Chris?"
            "Yes."
She takes off her shirt and is only wearing her white bra. She bites her lip. This is first time Chris has seen her without a shirt. But Chris doesn't say a word.
The man starts drawing the tattoo and Merida cringes and grips Chris's hand tight. She thinks this is worse than getting a shot! She can't believe she let Chris talk her into this. Chris rubs her hand. "It's okay babe. He's almost done."
            "Okay all done."
Merida looks down at her chest.
Tumblr media
   "I love it babe."
            "I like it too. Thanks."
"Your welcome. Let me cover it up." The man covers it up.
"Since this is your first tattoo I will tell you that you will have to keep this on for about 3 days. You then will be able to wash it off with hot water. Chris can help you or tell you what to do."
            "Alright. Thanks."
            "Your welcome."
"How much do we owe you?" Chris asks.
            "Just 35."
            "That's all!" Chris exclaims.
"Yep. Gave you a discount. You being the Cap and all and because your girl here was such a tropper." He smiles.
            "Well thanks," Merida blushes.
Chris pulls out his wallet and hands him cash.
            "Thanks again."
            "Your very welcome. Come back!"
            "We might." Chris smiles.
They leave the tattoo place and Chris holds the door open for her. Merida walks towards his car. After she is in Chris closes her door and walks around to the drivers side and climbs in.
"That wasn't so bad was it?"
            "No, but it did hurt."
            "But not for long right?"
            "I guess not."
Chris leans towards her and kisses her. "I love you babe. Thanks."
"I love you too, but why are you thanking me?"
            "For doing that with me."
"Your welcome. I still can't believe I did that."
"Well you did great! I'm proud of you. Would you like to go get some lunch before we head home?"
            "Sure sounds great!"
"Where would you like to go?"
            "You pick."
"I don't know all that is around here."
"Just about anything. What are you in the mood for?"
"Well I know what I'd love to have, but I better not."
            "Why not?"
"It's not something I should eat too often."
            "What is that?"
            "Italian."
            "I love Italain!"
"Alright, well since you love it, lets go."
"Wait, we ate that last time why don't we get something else. What kind of food do you like?"
"Well I don't eat meat. I like fish."
"We can get fish. I know a great sea food place."
            "That sounds great!"
They arrive at the sea food place and have just been seated and their drink orders have been taken when Merida's phone rings. She looks down and sees its her dad.
"Why is my dad calling me?"
She answers.
            "Daddy, everything okay?"
            "Princess, you got a tattoo?"
            "What? How did you...?"
"I saw it on the news."
            "On the news? What?"
Just then she got a text from Tiffany and she glances at it and sees she sent her a picture.
"Oh no! Daddy, I can explain. I..."
"Princess its okay. I'm not mad I'm just shocked. I didn't think you liked tattoos? I didn't think you would ever get one."
            "I didn't and I hadn't planned on it, but...Chris..."
"Chris? Did he make you get one?"
"No! He didn't make me no. But we sort of decided to get one together, sorta like matching tattoos."
"Princess tell me you didn't get his name tattooed on you!"
"No, I would never do that. I will show you next time I see you."
            "Okay princess."
"So...how bad was the press? You said you it on the news."
"Yes I did. Look online and you will see it."
"Okay I will check it out. Thanks daddy."
            "Welcome princess. I love you."
            "Love you too."
They hang up and Merida opens the text from Tiffany.
            "What happened?"
"My dad knows I got a tattoo. He saw it online. Tiffany sent me something I am fixing to check it out."
Merida looks down at the text Tiffany sent her.
            "Oh my gosh. Chris..."

"It's okay. I know its not your fault. But the comments! Why are they so mean Chris?"
Chris takes her hand. "I don't know. But thanks for being so great about this. I know this has got to be hard for you."
Merida smiles. "At times yes, but I trust you and know its part of being who you are."
Chris smiles back and takes her hand a lifts it up and kisses it. Their waitress comes back and takes their orders.
"Are you still leaving on Monday?"
"Yes, that is the plan. Why?"
"I was just wondering." Chris rubs the back of her hand.
Just then Chris's phone rings. He looks down and Merida notices the look on his face.
            "Chris? Everything okay?"
"I need to take this. I will be right back."
Chris leaves the table and steps outside. While he's gone Merida's phone rings. She sees it is Tiffany.
            "Hey girl!"
"Mer, oh my gosh! I saw the news and you never called me! You got a tattoo?"
Merida laughs. "Yes I got a tattoo and I'm sorry."
            "What did you get?"
"You remember the rose from Beauty and the Beast, when the last petal starts to fall?"
            "Yes."
"I got that and Chris got the whole rose. Symbolizing our love for each other, true love."
"Awww, that is so sweet! So he told you he loved you last night huh?"
"Yes. When he came back from being on the porch he told me. He said he had been scared to tell me, he didn't know how I felt and that we hadn't been together long. It was so sweet. Tiff I don't deserve him. I don't. I love him so much, but I don't deserve him. I've never met anyone like him before and it scares me. Tiff I'm so scared." She begins to cry.
"Mer, hey its okay. Chris loves you and I know he would do anything for you. I know you've been good for him. You can't talk like that."
"I know, Chris has told me that, but...I can't help it. I have seen the comments people have made about me and him and Tiff I don't know. I don't know if I can do it. I have been trying to be strong for him, but...I..." She cries again.
She then sees Chris walking back to the table. "Tiff I need to go. We are in a restaurant and Chris is coming back. He stepped out for a minute. I will talk to you later."
"Alright. Call me later okay? I love ya."
            "Love you too."
Merida hangs up just as Chris sits down.
"I'm sorry about that. That was my manager he..." Chris then notices that Merida is crying.
            "Babe, what's wrong?"
            Merida sniffles. "Nothing, I'm okay."
Chris takes her hands. "Babe, why are you crying? What happened?"
            "Nothing, I'm fine."
"Mer, please don't lie to me. What happened?"
"Nothing I promise. I was talking to Tiffany and I just teared up telling her..."
            "Telling her what?"
"Just how wonderful you are and that we got tattoos."
Chris looks at her. "Babe, I feel like there is something your not telling me."
            "No I'm not. I'm fine."
"Babe, I can tell when your lying and I know you are. I'm an actor remember and I am good at reading people."
            "Chris honest I..."
"Babe, you can tell me. Please what's wrong?"
            "Chris, I just..."
Just then their food comes. Chris lets go of her hand. "We will talk later."
"Here you are enjoy." She sets the plates down in front of them.
            "Thank you," Chris smiles.
"Is there anything else I can get you?"
"No I think we are good, thanks." Chris says.
The lady leaves. They both take a bite.                                       "This is good." Merida says.
"Babe, come on talk to me. What's up?"
            "Chris."
"Why won't you talk to me? Why do you keep shutting me out?"
            "I'm not. I just..."
"I know something is up. What is it? Have I done something to upset you? Are you regretting your tattoo?"
"No, it's not that. I am glad I got it. I just..."
            "What is it? Tell me."
Merida is quiet for a minute. "I know what your going to say."
            "What do you mean?"
            "I'm scared Chris."
            "Scared of what babe?"
Merida is quiet again. Chris takes her hand and rubs his thumb along her hand. "What is it? Why are you scared? Tell me."
"It has been so long since I've been in a relationship and I...I'm scared of screwing up. I'm scared of ruing your life and making..."
"What! Babe, why do you say that? Your not going to ruin my life. If anything you have made it better. You're the best thing that has ever happened to me!"
            "Chris I..."
"Mer, I mean it. I love you, and I am so glad I met you. Every morning I wake up and your first thing I think about it. I look forward to talking to you everyday and these last two days well two days in half, have been some of the best days of my life and I know I will not want to leave on Monday. Please, don't think that way. Your amazing, your beautiful and I love you with all heart!"
"Oh Chris." Merida cries. "I just...I'm not used to all the attention and I'm so scared of doing something wrong and..."
"Babe, listen to me. It will be okay. Your not going to do anything wrong. We are in this together. I will not let anything happen to you or anyone hurt you I promise. Stop worrying. Alright?" He says rubbing her hand again. "I love you."
Merida nods. "I love you too."
They finish eating and Chris pays and they leave. They head back to Merida's house. When Merida opens the door she is greeted by Dixie.
"Dixie! Hey girl!"
Dixie barks. "Are you hungry?"
Dixie barks and runs to the door. "Oh you need to go out?" Merida slids open the door and Dixie runs out. Chris comes up behind her and wraps his around her.
"I was just thinking, I think her and Dodger would get along great together."
            "I'm sure they would."
"I would love for you to come to Boston sometime."
Merida turns her head and smiles at him. "I would love that."
"Maybe after I finish filming we can work it out."
"That will be in November right?"
            "Yeah."
"Alright. We can talk about it closer to time."
Dixie paws at the door. Merida slids the door and she runs in and runs to the couch.
"Would you like to watch a movie?" Merida asks.
            "Sure."
They walk towards the couch. Merida sits down next Dixie. Chris sets his phone down on the coffee table.
"Go ahead and pick one. I will be right back."
Chris heads towards the bathroom. Merida decides to pick a Disney one. She has just put it in when she hears Chris's phone. She happens to look and sees a text.
Jamie-Did you tell her? How did it go?
Merida doesn't know what to think about that message. Who was Jamie? Was she talking about her? Tell her what? Was he cheating on her? She tried not to think that way especially after all he just said, but she didn't know what else to think. Who was Jamie? What was going on?
Merida sat back on the couch next to Dixie. The movie had just started with previews when Chris walks back in and sits down next her.
            "So what did you pick?"
            "A Disney one."
            "Which one?"
Merida didn't answer. She remained quiet.
"Babe," Chris said taking her hand.
Merida looks down at his hand holding hers. "Your phone went off while you were gone."
            "Oh, who was it?"
"I don't know!" She said harshly.
"Woh, babe. Hey, what's wrong?" he said rubbing her hand.
She didn't answer him at first.
            "Mer, talk to me."
"Someone named Jamie! She asked if you told her? How did it go? Chris, your not...your not cheating on me are you? I mean after all you said in the restaurant, I can't..."
"What! No! Of course not. Mer, how could think that?"
"I don't know. I just saw the text and I... I'm sorry I couldn't help but see it, I wasn't like trying...I'm sorry." She starts crying.
"Mer, babe." Chris says wrapping his arms around her. "Hey, it's okay. I'm not mad at you. I promise I'm not cheating you. That was Jamie Lee Curtis. She was talking about you. I had told her I was going to tell you that I loved you and I'm sure she was asking how it went."
            "Oh. I'm sorry I..."
"It's okay. You don't have to apologize. Let me answer her really quick."
Chris picks up his phone and relplies.
Chris-It went well. She told me she loved me too. I'm sure you saw the media already and know we are official and got tattoos. She was worried when she saw your text by mistake.
It didn't take her long to respond back.
Jamie-oh no I haven't! Wow, I'm sorry about that, but glad things are going well. ☺️What kind of tattoos did you get?
Chris-Beauty and the Beast ones. Roses.🌹
Jamie-Aww how sweet. Sounds great Chris. Happy for you. Enjoy your time with her I'll see you in a few days.☺️
Chris-I will thanks. See you then. ☺️
He sets his phone back on the coffee table.
"Okay I'm sorry. So what are we watching?"
"You'll see its fixing to start."
Just as those words left her mouth it started and he saw it was The Little Mermaid. Chris smiles.
"Are we going to sing along to the songs?"
"Maybe," she smiles and snuggles up close him laying her head on his chest.
They watched the movie and they did sing along to a few of the songs. When the movie ends Chris looks down at Merida.
"Babe, you awake?"
"Yes." She says looking up at him.
He smiles and leans down and kisses her softly on the lips. "I love you."
"I love you too. What should we do now?"
"Well could watch another movie. I know you don't want to do what I would like to do."
"What is that?"
Chris remains quiet for a few minutes.
"Chris?"
"I want to kiss you."
Merida smiles. "Chris, you can kiss me anytime you want."
Chris smiles back, "I know but that's not what I meant. I meant I would love to do more than just kiss you."
"Christopher Robert Evans!" She says smacking his arm.
"Babe, I didn't mean it like that! I meant make out and god it was sexy hearing you say my name like that."
Merida bites her lower lip.
"Don't get nervous on me. I know your scared and are not ready for that yet, its okay. I understand. I only said I would love to."
"Chris I...I would love to but..."
"Babe, it's okay. I understand. I'm not forcing you."
"I know your not and I want to...I do but..."
"You don't have to be scared. I would never hurt you I promise."
"I know you wouldn't. I just don't know if I can. I..."
Chris takes her face in his hands. "Babe, it's okay. You can let me know when your ready. I will be here. I'm not going anywhere. I know your scared and after what you have been through you have ever right to be. But I promise you, when you are ready you can trust me. I would never force you or hurt you in an way."
Merida hugs Chris and kisses him. "Chris, you're the best boyfriend! How did I get so lucky?"
"I'm the lucky one Babe." He says rubbing her back. "So what movie are we watching?"
Merida pulls away a little. "Another Disney one?"
"Sure."
"You pick this time. What movie?"
"What do you have?"
"Pretty much all of them."
"Beauty and the Beast?"
"Of course!"
Merida leaves the couch and grabs the movie and puts it in then sits back on the couch and curls up next to Chris.

6-16-2022
I have therapy this morning at 10:00, then I'm touring Genesis Health Club and then I'm going to Walmart to pick up my new glasses and get my second COVID-19 booster shot. I have a prescription to pick up from the pharmacy there as well. My insurance now covers a gym membership, so that's why I'm going to Genesis. They are the only fitness center in St. Joe that has a pool, and that's why I chose them. I love to do water aerobics, so I know I'll actually use the membership. I only wish I had someone to go with me, but maybe I will make a friend or two in class to help keep me motivated in the long run. I have a free 3-month membership certificate to Genesis that I won on an online auction for the Noyes Home, so maybe Jeremy can join me until I get settled in a routine. I haven't even told him that I jAnoined yet. I need to talk to him about it today. My goal for the next twelve months is to lose about 75 to 80 pounds. I weigh about 225 right now, and I think this is a realistic goal. I look fine most everywhere except this stubborn stomach fat. So besides water aerobics, I'm going to work on my abs several times a week. I should probably do my arms as well since they feel so weak sometimes. They look okay, but I have hardly any muscle in them. Anyway, going to the gym will help me feel better both physically and mentally, so I'm really glad my insurance has this complimentary program.
My birthday is in five days, and I'm dreading turning 47. Where the fuck has my life gone? Jeremy let me open a couple of presents yesterday that came in the mail. He got me a silver bracelet that says, "I love you to the moon and back," and a pair of socks that read "Sorry I can't" on one sock and then the other reads "My murder shows are on." Does he know me well or what? I'm so obsessed with true crime stories! I'm always watching Dateline, 48 Hours, Forensic Files, etc, or watching documentaries on Netflix about serial killers and other true crime. A few months ago, Allison introduced me to the podcast "My Favorite Murder," and I fucking LOVE it! I had never even listened to a podcast before because I thought they were all just wastes of time, but I was wrong. The hostesses of "My Favorite Murder" are named Georgia and Karen. I identify with both of them because they both have anxiety disorders and are obsessed with true crime. The way they talk on their podcast makes me think that if I knew them in real life, we would be great friends. I've discovered that characteristic is key to making and continuing a podcast. At the end of every show, they always say, "stay sexy, don't get murdered." I ordered and received a SSDGM bumper sticker for my car. It has been too fucking hot to put it on my car yet, but I will soon.
I counted the steps at my therapist's office Tuesday. There are 21 -- five and then a landing, seven and then a landing and the front door, and then nine inside the building. I guess I should be happy the elevator is broken so I can occupy my stupid brain by counting stupid steps. So dumb. I fucking count everything, and I'm not one who enjoys math at all. I take that back, I like doing math when clothes are on sale for 75% (or more) off. Ha. What can I say? I have inherited my mother's shopping skills.
I'm in a relatively good mood today. I hope it lasts awhile. Having bipolar disorder is so unpredictive. I am rapid cycling, so my moods can change on a dime. I cannot wait until I get a new doctor here in town and get on some new medication, even though I dread med changes. I'm just so ready to be off of Zyprexa. It really fucks with my blood sugar, and it is one of the medications that "helped" me gain all of this weight.
Anyway, I have therapy in an hour and a half, so I need to go take a bath and get ready. I'm in the mood to write more, but alas, life is waiting for me.
Until then...

Have a crazy guess what I ended up doing tonight instead of writing?  Go ahead, take a wild one.  I’ll give you a hint - it didn’t involve writing.
At 10:30pm I’m rushing around in the WalMart pharmacy trying to find butterfly sutures, liquid skin, alcohol, and antibac something or other before they lock the one door that’s still open.  For what, you ask?
FOR PUTTING LITTLE’S HEAD BACK TOGETHER
That child, I stg.  While I’m doing all this I’m texting at my husband to calm the hell down because we were on a video call with him when it happened and he’s pretty much the most easily freaked out person alive.
Let me sum up:
He’s out of state for a family funeral and we had plans to do a video call before he goes to bed.  So I call him, he accepts, video switches on, and right as we’re saying hello Little jumps off my lap and slams his head square into the corner of my dresser.  Like HI DAD BYE DAD *BAM*.  No clue what the hell he was doing, but that’s pretty typical.  Husband hears this resounding CRACK, Little lets out a massive wail of shock, I yell something like GEEZUS FUCK WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!? and Big takes the phone and just sits there staring into it in a speechless stupor while I grab Little up and rush him into the kitchen.  He’s yelling DON’T BE MAD MOM DON’T BE MAD and I’m trying to get all his hair out of the way so I can see what I’m dealing with, Izzy decides this is the perfect moment to jump up onto the table and knock over the Lego skyscraper he spent the last two hours building so now Little’s screaming at her while I’m wrestling with his three-foot long Rapunzel mop of hair trying to get to his injury and telling him to be quiet so his heart doesn’t speed up and gush all his blood out of his body, there’s blood (not a lot thankfully) and a whole lot of great big exposed inner-head stuff and I can hear Husband yelling over the phone asking who’s dead and how bad is it.
There’s a gash and it’s deep, like gaping deep, but amazingly it’s not bleeding much.  Diagonal through an eyebrow, Momoa style.  Little asks me if it looks cool.  Yeah baby, it looks cool.  I remember the last time this happened, how the ER slapped a butterfly stitch on his other eyebrow and sent us a bill for $800, and yell HEY GOOGLE WHAT TIME IS IT AND WHAT TIME DOES WALMART CLOSE?! (thank god for technology, I couldn’t have read the clock if I’d bothered to try).  I’ve got about 40 minutes.  Yeehaw.  Put the injured kid on the couch with a tablet and tell him not to go to sleep, give the other kid orders not to take his eyes off him, and five minutes later I’m frantically looking through five shelves of bandaids and first aid paraphernalia searching for the stitchy things the hospital used while the remaining store staff very deliberately stays the hell away from me because I obviously am on the teetering verge of asking one of them to help me find something and they just want to go home.
Anyway, I patched him up and he’s fine.  It looks hideous but it’s a straight clean gash, I pulled it shut and butterfly’d it up, doused it in liquid skin to help it seal and keep cat hair out of it.  Nothing fell out of his head and the only reason he even cried was because he thought I was going to be mad.  Geezus.  And now I’m gonna have myself a nice quiet little 2-minute nervous breakdown before I open that draft and finally start writing, because I promised a chapter of The Department this weekend and I’m not going to let something like a cracked skull stop me.  It’s 12:26am and I have about 2000 words to go...wish me luck.

Other than posting press on nails or merch im going to stay off my instagram. I am done seeing salons disobey the shut down order, saying they are the most sterile environment, putting themselves on the same level as pharmacies and grocery stores.
I know your livelihoods are on the line, but people are fucking dying. Salons are not essential they are not comparable to getting heart medicine and insulin, or food. So get off that pedestal. I don't need know why I need to explain this but they arent saying salons are the cause (though quit lying and acting that all salons follow CDC guidelines, if they did there would be no need for inspectors) what they are doing is limiting the amount of time people have to go out. Less thing open, less time they will be out around people potentially exposing themselves. If you bring up that it makes no sense for people to go to walmart or grocery stores then. Just keep your mouth shut. People still need food and home necessities, and yes even if it is essential they still risk exposure.
Quit blaming Governor Newsom was him going out to dinner a dick move? Yes does it make the pandemic any less serious, no. He didnt start the pandemic, it wasnt a result of something he did. I get he keeps shutting down salons and it effects your livelihoods and my heart goes out to you. But he has to put public safety first. We have to do what ever to stop/ slow the spread. Blame the situation we are in.
Dont let people who cry hoax. Take percussions so you don't spread it. Hold your members of congress who don't want to provide another round of finical help or rent relief, or small business relief.
Blaming the goverment for taking percussions is useless.
Ps: stay at home, and wear a fucking mask

So for about ten days now I've been playing around with the budgeting app Mint (along with a Google Sheets yearly budget template and a lot of manual work with a calculator, a calendar, and a succession of blank Google Docs because that's just the kind of person I am), and so obviously I have some Thoughts.
* I picked Mint because it's the budgeting app all the financial reviewers talk about, because it's run by Intuit who also own TurboTax so I knew their security and interface would be good, and because it does not come with built-in shaming over any of your ~unnecessary~ purchases.
* Mint is a free app which makes its money by offering you sponsored ads for financial products it thinks you might like, and getting paid by the advertisers when you accept one of the ads. The most intrusive location for these ads is on your dashboard, feed, whatever you want to call it, where the ad tile is required to be the third tile down and cannot be shuffled to the bottom or turned off.
* (There is also a desktop browser version, Mint.com. I have poked it very slightly but couldn't get it to do anything useful. More on that later. I don't remember noticing how the ads are arranged there.)
* The app's general design is very sleek and intuitive, what I'd expect from the parent company of QuickBooks and TurboTax. Other than the intrusive ad tile, it lets you rearrange everything however you want.
* Mint is designed around importing transactions from your bank account for you to do budgetary stuff at, so obviously security is really important, which gives Intuit an edge up on the competition because I'm already used to trusting them with my tax returns. It only seems to sync new transactions during banking hours, which for someone like me who does most of their shopping on Sunday is kind of frustrating. It also won't let you edit or recategorize a transaction till it's finished "processing" a day or two down the line. I don't know if these pitfalls are common to all budget apps but it would probably make sense if they are.
* One thing Mint does that's incredibly handy for me is it lets you put all your recurring bills in one place and even sync them with your phone calendar. I actually had to turn off the phone calendar sync because it was alerting me constantly on the day before payday when I couldn't do anything about the bill that was due on payday, but if you can find the setting to change the alert frequency it might be useful. And having a nice chronological list of what the fuck is due when, is extremely helpful to my brain, because previously I was trying to remember everything in my head and I kept losing bills.
* Going down my tiles as I have them sorted in the app, I don't have much to say about that list of transactions itself, except that you can recategorize them and split them into different categories -- which is handy if the rent included $105 late fees which you don't want befuckening your future averages, or if you bought groceries and also a barbecue lighter at Walmart, to take two recent examples.
* You cannot, unfortunately, rename or edit categories. On desktop only, you can supposedly add categories, but you cannot then use those categories in any of Mint's other functions, which really defeats the purpose. And their ideas of what categories you might need are pretty... idiosyncratic, not to say WASPy, so e.g. I'm currently categorizing Patreon income under "Reimbursement" because the other options were things like "Investment Income" and "Returned Purchase". And transfers to my savings account can either be "Credit Card Payment" or "Transfer for Cash Spending".
* (I suppose I could put my savings under "Investment: Deposit" or something similarly grandiose, but that seems like... a lot for the 31 cents rounded up from getting a pizza at Little Caesars.)
* Anyways. So then, after the obligatory ad tile, comes a nice colorful pie chart of my spending for the month, which I can open up and tab through to look at all the categories. I saw one finance blogger saying you should use the Miscellaneous category for some things rather than getting too granular, but I like seeing the little individual entries for my haircut and my cloth mask and my pharmacy copay. (That last one's going to be a more substantial pie slice now that I can actually afford to start taking most of my meds again. Turns out my prescription for diabetic test strips expired, though, so I have to get ahold of my doctor and get a new one sent over, and I'm looking skeptically at the copays. :P I've been ignoring my diabetes since January, it can wait a little longer till I'm financially caught up from COVID.)
* I can see list-style breakdowns by category and merchant, too. This is one of the few places in the mobile app that my income shows up, other than the actual paycheck transactions. The desktop version has some more places to budget projected income, but the handling is clunky as hell.
* Next up is the tile where I've been spending a lot of my time, Budgets. This is your basic "envelope method" where you create, say, a budget for haircuts and another one for groceries. Each budget has to be for one of Mint's pre-created categories, and when you have a spending transaction in that category, it puts the expense against that Budget. The desktop version has you also creating a line item for expected income in Budgets, and then becoming stroppy when you attempt to adjust parts in the wrong order, so I prefer the app which simply tells you e.g. that you have spent $900 of an allocated $1000 with an airy unconcern for whether the $1000 has arrived in your bank account yet.
* My single biggest frustration with Mint is that you cannot create Budgets based on user-created categories, nor can you delete, rename, or even collapse categories in the list. So if I go to create a new Budget for, say, "Housewares" to account for the $1 barbecue lighter I finally bought (I have large hands and a tall jar candle that has burned down farther than I can reach, okay, it was a necessity), then I'm stuck scrolling all the way up and down past "Investment: Capital Gains" and "Kids: Child Support" before finally settling on "Home Supplies" because it doesn't really seem like a "Home Furnishings".
* After Budgets comes Accounts, which just shows me my current net worth across all my accounts. I actually unlinked my savings account because it was confusing the hell out of me to see a 31-cent transfer out of checking paired with the same 31-cent transfer into savings, so this doesn't show me anything I can't get through my bank app, but if I had current credit card debt or non-retirement investment accounts it might be more useful.
* (I have not linked my 401(k) to Mint. I haven't even figured out how to get into my 401(k), either before or after it transferred to a different handler a couple months back. I feel like those are problems for a later time than "okay how much groceries can I buy and still pay the rent".)
* On the desktop version of Mint, you can also put things like your car in under your net worth as Property. I tried that, found that I both did not believe their Kelly Blue Book valuation at all (it didn't have any option to take into account "was totaled two years ago and looks it but still mostly runs") and that I find it extremely stressful to have non-liquid property listed as part of my net worth. Interesting to know. You learn all sorts of shit about yourself when you try to manage money.
* Next there's a tile that attempts to break down my "cash flow" by month. It doesn't seem to have noticed the Paypal transfers on which I was largely subsisting for the three months it was able to pull from my bank account, even though they show up fine in Transactions, so it's deeply confused about whether my cash flow is Healthy or Unhealthy. For now, with my acquisition of a second paycheck for August, it seems to have settled on Healthy. I might turn that tile off though. It doesn't really... offer much, I guess?
* I have turned off the tile that shows me my free credit score. That's a problem for a much later me. Right now I have more urgent problems, like catching up on my deferred car insurance and my deferred cell phone bill and my deferred healthcare deductions.
* You also can't turn off the tile for the Mint "Life Blog" or the one asking you to rate the app, but at least they sit at the bottom of the app as you scroll down.
* The desktop version also has an entire segment not found in the app, for "Goals", where you can supposedly put in your outstanding debts and figure out payment schedules for them. It sounds really good in principle, but I found that section of the site unworkably glitchy, on both laptop and iPad; I couldn't even get past the screen where you try to first enter one of your debts, as it required me to choose answers from two dropdowns neither of which would actually do anything. I was able to get an estimate from the "saving for a rainy day" goal, anyway, by putting in the amount of a debt and telling it I'd like to save up that much money in a year, but that's nothing I couldn't have done with a calculator and a bit of mental effort.
* Jumping back up to the top of the app, one other thing that does intermittently drive me bananas about the app is, when you put in a bill you get a dropdown where you select how often it should recur, but then it... doesn't recur. You have to manually put in the next occurrence. It's still a handy list of upcoming bills, but I actually had to resort to my phone calendar (which properly handles recurring events) to get a good visual on future months' bills.
* And because there is nowhere to put in your projected income and get a nice projection of "On X date you will have $XX in your bank account", or even better a daily graph of your expected cash flow so that you can see "yeah don't put that $300 in savings you'll need it for rent in two weeks", I've been reduced to, as mentioned above, manual daily projections through the end of the year using my phone calculator, phone calendar, Google Docs, and eventually my damn iPad drawing app (came with a Bluetooth stylus I never got working) because I couldn't find any physical graph paper.
* So. Um. Summary. I guess it's a good app? It's very sleek, it has nice charts and graphs and a good interface. But it thinks you can do a lot more with it than you can actually do. Its main uses for me are probably going to boil down to "stop forgetting bills" (the rolling list format works a lot better for my brain than the phone calendar format, even if I do have to re-enter data every time I mark a bill paid) and "finally figure out how much I spend on food really".

RvB Walgreens AU
Yes, I’m back with another one of these abominations, starring our favorite red team leader. AO3 link is here.
Sarge finds love at the local Walgreens.
Part 1
Sarge and Tucker pull into a parking spot at the local Walgreens.
Tucker works the occasional weekend for a program assisting elderly folks who don't have access to a car for one reason or another. Unfortunately, his schedule coincidentally keeps lining him up to drive around the same crazy veteran, even though he tried to change up his times to avoid getting the old geezer again and again.
Tucker walks around to open the passenger door, then places his hand on Sarge's arm to help him out of the car.
"Just 'cause they won't let me drive don't mean I can't walk! Hands off, ya dirty blue!" Sarge bellows as he swats the younger man away.
"The hell? You're the Walmart greeter wearing blue all the time, gramps," Tucker says with a smirk, having learned that mentioning this color for some reason pisses the dude off to no end.
Sarge ignores the comment so he doesn't have to deal with being completely in denial about this fact. Instead, he occupies his mind with daydreams about the local Target having an open position so he can work for a business that has good taste in corporate colors.
The routine is the same as always: Tucker wanders through the aisles to investigate discounted previous holiday's candy and decorations, while Sarge shuffles to the pharmacy area to pick up his prescriptions.
What wasn't the same was the pharmacist behind the counter today. And gosh darn if Sarge had ever seen a sight as beautiful as her. Raven hair with stunning silver streaks in a loose bun, a sleek white coat accentuating her form, and a face that would make a boy hit puberty right then and there if he hadn't already. But thankfully, Sarge wasn't a boy. And he was ready to show this fine lady what a man he was.
"'Scuse me, miss?" he says, smoothing out his normally gruff voice. She cocks her head with a large smile, responding with bright excitement, "Why, hello there! Oh, oh, please, tell me, do you have an extremely rare and life-threatening disease and not a completely boring ailment like pneumonia? That would just make my day!"
God bless America-- Sarge was in love.
"I think you have somethin' for me, little lady," he continues with a chuckle. Sarge leans against the counter and flexes his arm to show how swole he was despite his age. He couldn't see it at first since he isn't wearing his bifocals, but now that he's closer, he squints to read the angel's name tag on her uniform: Dr. Emily Grey.
Dr. Grey's face falls, seemingly disappointed. "Oh, you called ahead to order the... Beano? You know, you can get that over the counter."
"Oh, nope! Must've heard me wrong! Dang phones, right? Yep, heh, I'm, uh, I meant to say, uh-- Viagra!" Sarge scrambles for an excuse to sound like an adequate partner, and hopes that it's sufficient.
Dr. Grey raises an eyebrow, but her smile brightens. Heh. Knew it would work. The lovely doctor turns to retrieve the product from a shelf behind her.
"Yep, normally Sarge Jr. has no problems, but a good soldier is always prepared!"
"That's very proactive of you,” she offers cheerfully, “especially given that most men your age tend to have a fairly active libido but not enough manpower to satisfy it!”
"Heh, well, once ya give me that magic little pill there, I'll be able to do a lotta satisfying. At least for four hours, anyway-- then I'll have to call ya to help me out." Sarge winks. Dr. Grey giggles as she pulls up his account on the pharmacy's computer.
"You'd need my number for that... Sarge?" She tilts her head quizzically. "Oh, there must be a data entry error, it looks like they only entered your surname--"
"No error there, gorgeous! Name's Sarge but you can call me daddy." Ha, he's on a roll, smoother than he'd ever been, age be damned!
"So how does a fella go about gettin' those digits, Ms. Emily Grey? Is your middle name murder? 'Cause I've got a boner for you." He earns another giggle from this heavensent being.
"I have no idea what you mean by that, but I would love to psychoanalyze you to find out!"
"Hey Sarge, d'ya get your fart meds? What's the hold up?" Tucker asks, carrying a bag full of Valentine's Day candy even though it was nearing Halloween. He approaches the two as Sarge finishes punching her number into his Jitterbug flip phone.
"Ain't no holdup, son!" Sarge hollers back, although his intended annoyance is dampened by his ear-to-ear grin. As they exit the store, Tucker lightly punches him in the shoulder with a proud smile. Sarge doesn't even think to berate or shrug off the whippersnapper, too distracted by his delight.
Sarge thinks on the battle won today. The battle… of love.
Part 2
"You're a DILF, sweetie, don't worry." Emily smiles at her husband of 19 years, rocking back and forth in the chair across from him on their porch.
"But he called me a GILF! I'm not a grandpa, Simmons doesn't even have kids! Him and that dirtbag haven't--"
"And even if they did, remember, you adopted him, so it technically doesn't have to count!" Emily disputes with her soft smile intact. She pats Sarge's hand lovingly. He huffs.
"Fine. Wait, what's all this hafta do with the Walgreens commercial we're doin', anyway? And why do they call it Walgreens? It would sound better if it was Walreds. Heh. At least it's not Walblues." Sarge shudders.
"Um, Mrs. Sharge? Could you shay the motto? My phone ish running out of battery," Jensen says anxiously, steadying her smartphone at the two. "Director Church won't be happy if I don't finish thish tonight!"
"Yer not even bein' paid, intern girl! Doesn't hafta be perfect!" Sarge grunts.
Emily rolls her eyes, then directs her line at the camera, "Trusted since 1901."
"Just like Sarge's dick!!"
"Palomo!! Ugh, I'll jusht edit it out!"
Fade to black.

24/7 US Healthcare Idea
I'm light of some bullshit on Facebook...
I will not back down on my belief that when you work in the medical field, a patient's health and well-being comes before your convenience. If you can't assist them, you suggest people/places who might be able to. You don't just turn your back and give them the proverbial "fuck you".
I also believe medicine should be available 24/7, without having to go through a hospital pharmacy. You should be able to choose your pharmacy. Quick note, not all places have a Walmart with a pharmacy. Not all of them are open 24/7. No, you can't always choose your pharmacy. Depends on your insurance and doctor.
Health care centers should be 24/7. Health is not retail. Health issues happen at any time. Not all are emergencies. Nobody should have to lose work to see a doctor. Something happens at 3pm and you can just call your GP for advice. 3am? Better go to the hospital and pay bank, just in case.
24/7 health care centers would not only cut down on ER costs, it would bring more jobs.
I love when I mention this, people get all offended and are like people have to get home. They have families! Rage, rage, bullshit rage. Chill Debbie. Nobody expects anyone to work 24 hours a day. Does your ass not know what shifts are?
ETA: while I would love for the US to have universal "free" healthcare, we shouldn't have it until we ditch our minimum wage system and replace it with a living wage system. Obama care was a novel idea, but it didn't work. It's not the government's right to know what is affordable for someone. We all have different needs and requirements. What's affordable for one may break the bank for another.

Talked about this on Twitter, but felt I'd share here as well.
I failed my first attempt at the PTCB exam yesterday, and have to wait two months before I can attempt to retake it. Unfortunately by that time, my pharmacy technician license will have expired because I can't renew mine until I pass the certification exam. What this means is that I will be out of a technician job come the end of March.
I have been so stressed since getting my results because I've been panicking that this meant that I'd ultimately become unemployed come April 1st and that I'd be back to desperately trying to find any job available (even going back to the food industry or seeking employment at Walmart, both things I've been adamant that I'd never do even in the most desperate of times because 1, working in the food service made me come home every day wanting to kill myself, and 2, Walmart is the cause behind my injured back, I was at absolute odds with how upper management was running my department into the ground just to compete with a newly opened grocery store, and they were bastards enough to ultimately fire me [after I had already quit, I might add] because I had to call in on my final three days employed there because my back was in so much pain at the time that I literally could not get out of bed and even the slightest movements caused spasms that had me screaming in agony. Just getting to the phone to be able to call in and report that I wasn't in any ability to get to work was torture to me at the time. And they had the gall to fire me, for injuries I sustained while at work, MONTHS after I was no longer employed and well after I had given them my two weeks notice [even if the reason I gave them for quitting was that I was returning to school after working with the company for several years, which technically was true I just didn't also say that it was because they refused to even take into consideration the instructions my physical therapist had given them so as to NOT further damage my back and that I felt that if I stayed there then it would be to ultimately watch my department die under their insane idea that a SINGULAR SECTION OF THE STORE —THAT CAME TO BE LESS THAN A QUARTER OF THE ACTUAL SIZE, STAFF, AND CUSTOMER TRAFFIC COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE STORE— COULD POSSIBLY COMPETE WITH A NEW STORE THAT SPECIALIZED 100% IN WHAT OUR QUARTER DID]. So needless to say Walmart is absolutely at the bottom of my list of places I would ever want to try to work at again).
So it's understandable that the past 24 hours have not been the best for me and I've been on the verge of an emotional breakdown because I've been terrified that I won't have a job all because I failed my 1st attempt at this exam.
I got to talk with upper management today about this, and they assured me that, come the end of March, they will rework me into the front end schedule while I attempt again to take the test, and would keep me employed up front until I managed to accomplish that.
Sarah, our store manager, also assured me that I'm not alone in failing the test the way I did. I had the worst possible luck with what questions I received and it was primarily all hospital focused and the few bits that were on the pharmacy were almost all regarding machines and technology that I have not experienced at either store I've worked at. She told me that almost everyone she's known, unless they work in a hospital or are going through a nursing program, has failed that exact version of the test if they got it.
She also said that she would talk with her old store to see if their pharmacy, which does have that equipment, would be willing to let me work a few days over there so I could become familiar with it, as the only time I've ever encountered anything to do with that stuff was when I did my initial training/introduction/learning computer program. When I was first hired. Well over two years ago.
My direct manager was not at work today so I haven't been able to talk with Mina about what's going on and to try to even see, while I can't be employed in the pharmacy until I pass and get a new license after March, if she could hold my position so that when I do pass and have a renewed license, I could just come back and get put back onto the schedule.
I have two more attempts (technically three, but the wait period between attempt three and attempt four is longer and if I fail attempt four then I have to start everything with the pharmacy, including classes for it, all over again) at the test, and I do have a safety net in the form of an additional test I learned about from a customer, that only focuses on pharmacy work, if things get really bad. However the safety net is not a test my work will sponsor, though they will accept the certification from it, and from what I was told it is not only a certification that requires being renewed every year but is also one that is only available to technicians that have failed the PTCB exam three times.
WITH THAT ALL SAID...
I'm still stressed and an emotional wreck over the results for a couple of reasons. The biggest of which is that testing has always been a struggle for me to accomplish and do well with. The moment an exam is placed in front of me, everything in my head goes blank no matter how calm or how hard I studied, and that has led to some rather poor grades (and self-destructive behavior) when I attended college. To me, passing this exam, especially on the first try, was not just about being able to keep my job, but to try to prove to myself that I could do it. That if I focused and studied harder than I ever had before, that I could manage to do well and succeed. And that I might be able to apply that same effort back into college as I tried to pursue my actual end-goal career. And I did study hard for this exam. Hells, I continued to cram and study to the point where I was almost running late to the exam location. And I still failed...
And it makes me feel like all that effort was worthless. That no matter how much I try to succeed, that all that exists for me is failure... And that even my own ambition to try to go back to school and do better and become an English professor would be just a futile dream and a waste of not only everyone's time, but also what little money I have to my name.
And a second, equally important reason why this is still hitting me so hard is that, even though I know that a major factor in this failure was the focus of the questions I randomly got, I'm struggling to allow myself to even believe that the failure is just the result of an unlucky draw and NOT a reflection of my personal abilities as a pharmacy technician or a person.
And that directly ties into the first reason, this test was so much more personal to me than just something I needed to do for my job... It was about being able to show myself that my past issues in school were not indicative of my current capabilities. That I could succeed. That maybe there was hope for me with returning to school.
I had so much riding on passing this the very first try, and it's all come crashing down all because of little more than bad luck, not my own knowledge.
But that's something incredibly hard to try to convince myself of, because to me this is just another failure on top of a planet of failures for me.
I've broken down four times today over this already, and had to force myself to keep it together whenever customers were around.
I have two months to prepare again.
I just hope that my randomly selected questions are more focused on what I'll actually know and not on a portion of the job that I have no experience at all with again.

Never Gonna Give You Up
The credit for this oneshot goes to the person who’s probably the only thing reminding me to write at the moment(sorry about that, I’m trying): @elegantdragoncolor
"Damn it Cas." Dean stood, watching over Cas as he slept, "I wanted to stay here but if you leave me, I won't survive. All of this crap we've been through? It has torn me apart so many times that I don’t know who I am anymore, but you do. You always picked up the pieces and I was selfish! I knew it would cost you something eventually, but I kept pushing and going things I shouldn't have. I know that I'm selfish, but if you don't wake your ass up I will collapse. Please" what started as a shout turned into a whisper as dean ended his monologue. Cas had saved him from hell again, and this time it had taken a toll. It had been weeks since he had been awake, but Cas was breathing, and that was enough to keep Dean fighting for him.
-
"Dean, Dean!" The older Winchester woke to his brother smacking him on the chest lightly, his eyes drifted to Cas to make sure he was okay. "He's waking up." Sam told him. It was as if someone had injected caffeine into Dean's veins, he rushed over to the bed where Cas had laid for the past few weeks.
"Cas? You with me?" Dean bit his lip as his hand found it's way to the angel's chest. Relief flooded his heart as slivers of muffled blue peeked from behind Cas's eyelids.
"Dean?"
-
"So you're saying there's nothing you can do to help him?" Sam hardly ever raised his voice but this doctor was really starting to piss him off.
"I'm sorry. At this point it would probably be best for you to consider admitting him somewhere he would be comfortable, not everyone can handle taking care of people like him." The doctors had run multiple tests on Cas to try and figure out what happened to him, the results didn’t come back as a specific disease but they had an unfortunate list of symptoms to guide them. Dean grit his teeth and summoned up all his anger, glancing at Cas through the window outside his room. He was coloring a page the hospital had given him.
"You listen here, you dick. I have seen him at his worst, which trust me doc, is worse than he is now. So this? I can handle this." The doctor kept a poker face through Dean's speech, as though she'd heard more like it.
"Mr. Smith, Mr. Novak has epilepsy, is blind in both eyes, deaf in one ear and deteriorating in the other, and has the worst case of cognitive disfiguration I have ever seen. Think it over." She handed him a brochure for 'Sandy Beaches Care Center' and headed in the other direction.
-
The ripped up brochure sat in pieces on the floor as the trio made their way out of the hospital.
"Dean, why do I have to sit in the wheely chair? My legs feel fine." Cas asked, eyes sliding to where dean was signing him out.
"Its just a rule the hospital has, just to make sure you make it out without falling." He whispered a small thanks to the receptionist and continued pushing Cas down the hall, Sam following behind.
"Oh." Cas furrowed his brow, "That's dumb."
"Yeah buddy, it is." The elevator doors closed, bringing them down to the ground floor.
-
Dean never got a good nights sleep, but some nights were worse than others. This was one of those nights. Guilt consumed him as the tears slipped down his face, a hand over his mouth to muffle the noises coming out. This was all his fault, Cas did this for him. Cas was this way because of him. Because he sold his soul again, because he couldn't just live with the fact that Sam was going to die, because he had to play the hero again. Dean hated this with every fiber in his being, and the worst part? He would do it all over again. He would do it again because even if Cas wasn't himself, dean could still have both of them. Most nights were sleepless for Dean, but this time he fell asleep with tears staining his cheeks.
-
"Cas, time for breakfast." Dean nudged the angel gently, pulling him out of his dreams.
"Pancakes?" Cas peeked an eye open, though it didn’t make much of a difference in his sight.
"They're on the table." Dean smiled sleepily. The boys made their way to the kitchen where Sam was waiting for them.
"Morning Cas." Sam greeted managing to look away from his phone to smile.
"Good morning Sam." Cas answered. Dean followed him to his seat and set a plate of pancakes down in front of him.
"Hey, the doctor called this morning to schedule Cas's hearing aid fitting." Sam announced, "It's at four on Tuesday."
"Where's it at?"
"Uh, Saint Paul Hearing Center. 4949 Russell street." Sam sipped his coffee.
"Alright, I got that one. Made an eye appointment for him too, three today at Walmart." Dean stated.
"I'll take that one, hit the books and look for spells to help." Sam finished his pancakes and set his plate in the sink, heading to his bathroom to shower.
"Stop by the pharmacy while you're out!" Dean yelled after him. "Alright buddy, TV time."
-
As scooby doo played on the TV, dean found it hard to concentrate on the spell book in front of him. He'd seen all of the episodes but it was still entertaining. Dean snapped out of his trance when he heard his glass shattering. He looked up to Cas, only to see that he had fallen to the floor shaking, a seizure.
The hunter straddled Cas, pinning his arms to the floor in an attempt to hold him down. The doctor had said that the only thing they could do was make sure he didn’t get hurt and make sure he took his meds.
It lasted about fifteen minutes, Cas shaking and Dean praying to whatever deities and gods were out there for cas to be okay. Finally the shaking stopped and he came back into consciousness.
"Hey, hey, Cas?" Dean climbed off of his hips. "You're okay, you had a seizure." They sat for a few seconds as Cas came to. "You wanna lay in bed and listen to some cartoons?" Cas nodded his head weakly.
It was times like this when Dean wished he had been smarter.
-
"Hey, how is he?" Sam asked, leaning up against the door to Cas's room. Dean let out a breath and turned to look at Cas.
"He had a seizure while you were in the shower, left him a little shaken up. We'll have to reschedule the appointment." Sam nodded mutely.
"I'll call. How are you?" Dean's eyes didn’t leave the angel as he spoke.
"I'm fine, Sammy."
-
"Alright Cas, time to get ready. You have your hearing appointment in two hours." It had been about a week and Cas was doing a little better, his eye appointment had gone well. Even though his glasses couldn't do much for him, Cas picked out a yellow rectangular pair. Yellow was his favorite color.
"But I don’t wanna go!" The tantrums had started a few days ago, and nobody in the house was liking it.
"Cas, it won't be scary. I promise. I'll stay by your side and it won't hurt at all. Okay?" Cas furrowed his eyebrows but nodded.
The drive to the hearing center was longer than Dean would have liked it to be but it was worth it, even if Cas didn't technically need it yet. The doctor had said that Cas's hearing was deteriorating in one ear so it seemed only fair to him that they make it as good as they can.
"Sir, technically he doesn't need a hearing aid. He's completely deaf in one ear and the other one is still in pretty good condition!" Dean's eyes narrowed and his voice dropped to a whisper.
"Are you deaf, Dr. Herring? Hear me when I say, you will give him a damn hearing aid or so help me I will ruin this business. Capiche?" The doctor nodded fearfully, his smile full of nerves.
"One hearing aid, coming right up!"
-
"Dean, maybe it would be best to consider the home." Jody suggested. It had hurt enough coming from other people, but Jody? "You could still visit him!"
"Jody, if I died tomorrow and some assclown tried to put him in a home. I would mosey my way back into the veil, and I would go vengeful spirit on their ass so fast, they wouldn’t even have time to take a breath. It's not happening." Sam stood behind him with his arms crossed, mouth opening to support his brother's statement.
"You heard him Jody, we wouldn't do it."
-
"Hey, Dean. Get this, a couple was burnt to death at a benefit for homeless kids in Alabama. Sounds like Rowena's M.O.." Dean took a swig of beer.
"You go check it out, I'll stay with Cas. Hes got a checkup on Friday." Sam made his way to his room to start packing.
"Sounds like a plan. I'll go grocery shopping on my way back."
-
"It's a complicated book with a lot of complicated spells! I'd need time to look over it.' They'd found Rowena, and currently were having a chat about the book of the damned and if any spells in it would help Cas.
"So stay here, figure it out!" Dean's patience was running thin. The witch widened her eyes in mock surprise.
"He's a wee bit invested isn't he? Don't worry Dean, I'll get loverboy back to his original state in no time. After all, I do owe you one." She sent a wink Sam's way. "I'll need some items." Sam crossed his arms.
"Make a list."
-
"Is Rowena a nice witch, or a bad witch?" Cas asked.
"That's hard to say. She wouldn't do anything to hurt you but she's not very nice sometimes." Dean supplied as he put Cas's hearing aid in for the day.
"I think that deep down she's a good witch, she's just angry in her heart." Cas said, blindly feeling his bed sheets.
"I think you might be right about that one buddy." Dean replied. There was a pause before Cas spoke again.
"Why does your soul feel so sad today?" The hunter was a bit shocked by the words.
"My soul? How do you know what my soul feels like?" Dean asked.
"I don’t know, but it feels sad today. Why does it feel sad?"
"Well, sometimes humans get sad because something happened, or because they feel guilty, or sometimes just for no reason at all." Dean answered.
"You don’t need to feel any of those things Dean, I wanted to save you. I love you!" The angel hugged him with excitement as Dean tried to keep his breathing under control. This was not the way he thought this would go.
"Love you too buddy." He said, patting the angel on the back and hugging him back.
-
"That's the last of it." Rowena announced. "Now you just need to say these words." She handed a paper to Dean. He took a deep breath and spoke the incantation.
"Fige me maledicti convertam te auditus et visus, gustus, olfactus, corporis animique inveniunt novis, vertunt in via." At first the room didn't change, it seemed the spell hadn't worked. Then Cas dropped to the floor, eerily still. A gasp escaped his throat just seconds later as his eyes unclouded and his brain righted itself.
"Dean? What happened? What's in my ear?" Dean's face lit up, the spell had worked after all.
"You saved me from hell again, but this time something happened to you." Dean proceeded to explain the entire situation, leaving out a few details along the way.

Why trust social media vs. major news sources ?
12/18/21
Daddy Blessing was vaccine-hesitant for the longest time.
One of the things I’ve always cherished about him is that he’s typically open to changing his mind. This was different. Just about anytime the matter would come up he grew more resistant.
[ Blessing supposed her dad might be quite upset with her if she’d been the one holding out. ]
I can see how Daddy B could be swayed by social media controversies about vaccines. He’s shown me how Nigerians share videos of violent clashes in the moment via social media - stories that Nigerian mainstream news might miss, play down, or intentionally omit.
While I like to listen to BBC World Service reporting on Africa, Daddy B does not. In his eyes Great Britain is a colonizer, the oppressor.
I can imagine how people outside of Africa and the African diaspora might miss the nuances in BBC reporting that Daddy B finds objectionable. And while bias in reporting may be waning due to Black Lives Matter and increased attention to unintended microaggressions, trust isn’t earned overnight.
All in all, Daddy B is liable to trust social media over mainstream news, and perhaps especially over news coming out of the western world.
His primary reason for putting off getting vaccinated was concern over possible unforeseen side effects. I researched matters from all angles (and was hugely alarmed by the minuscule chance of death due to blood clots with the AstraZeneca vaccine !).
I set up our annual physicals early with hope this would give Daddy B the chance to discuss Covid-19 vaccination options with his doctor… but Daddy B wouldn’t talk to the doctor about it at all. Sigh…
How could we make a vaccination appointment for Daddy B ? If he changed his mind at the last minute, would it be possible to secure another appointment at a later date ?
Truman Medical Center/University Health at 2211 Charlotte Street in Kansas City, Missouri takes walk-ins from 7am-3:20pm Monday through Friday. I like the idea of going to a hospital versus a drug store or Walmart. Blessing and I got vaccinated there earlier this year.
I posted a note inside our front door with the University Health vaccination center’s details and pointed the location out to Daddy B when we happened to be driving by that way after hours…
How about a little vacation over Thanksgiving break to celebrate Daddy B’s November birthday ?
If we were going to travel, he’d have to get vaccinated.
Monday, November 8th, with heavy hearts, we attended the home-going of Blessing’s best friend’s dad. This father, adored by all, had been so alive to us. Now he was… gone.
As we drove in the cortege to the cemetery, Blessing wondered why a fellow on the roadside was taking off his hat. Daddy B explained, “out of respect for the dead.”
This dad’s passing is a complicated story wherein he was separated from all his family due to Covid-19 regulations at St. Luke’s. Circumstances surrounding his death painted a vivid picture of what being in a hospital Covid ward entails.
I continued to ask around about vaccine hesitancy in an effort to find out what seemed to sway people’s loved ones to get vaccinated at last. I saw that offering to accompany the individual to get vaccinated was a way to encourage and support him or her.
On Monday, November 15th I accompanied Daddy B to get his first Pfizer vaccination at University Health. As we waited for doors to open at 7am, we observed a nurse carrying a cooler of vaccines over from the pharmacy.
Then Monday, November 22nd we were off to St. Louis on holiday ~
Monday, December 6th Daddy B got his second shot.
And Wednesday this week Daddy Blessing called me up to get the address of the University Health vaccination center for a workmate ~

How One Rural Town Without a Pharmacy Is Crowdsourcing to Get Meds
WALDEN, Colo. — The building that once housed the last drugstore in this town of fewer than 600 is now a barbecue restaurant, where pit boss Larry Holtman dishes out smoked brisket and pulled pork across the same counter where pharmacists dispensed vital medications more than 30 years ago.
It’s an hourlong drive over treacherous mountain passes to Laramie, Wyoming, or Granby or Steamboat Springs, Colorado — and the nearest pharmacies. The routes out of the valley in which Walden lies are regularly closed by heavy winter snows, keeping residents in and medications out.
Walden has suffered the fate of many small towns across the United States, as the economics of the pharmacy business have made it difficult for community drugstores to survive. With large pharmacy chains buying up independent drugstores and increasingly controlling the supply chain, towns such as Walden have too few residents to attract a chain drugstore and no great appeal for pharmacists willing to strike out on their own.
With no local access to prescription drugs, the town of mainly cattle ranchers and hay farmers has crowdsourced a delivery system, taking advantage of anyone’s trip to those bigger cities to pick up medications for the rest of the town.
“Really, it’s a network of community and people reaching out and knowing that others have needs,” said Tina Maddux, who runs a nonprofit that provides food and other assistance in Walden. “We’re a community that pulls together for the wellness of everyone.”
The system is just one of the creative ways that rural communities deal with a lack of health care. In Walden, the senior center runs a regular shuttle to the bigger locales so older residents don’t have to drive to pick up groceries, visit doctors or refill their meds. In October, a pharmacy in Steamboat Springs began delivering medications to Walden once a week. Mail-order pharmacies can help with medications for chronic conditions, but not for acute needs.
Yet these solutions can’t replace a bricks-and-mortar pharmacy, as pharmacists do much more than count pills. They can give flu or covid shots and, in some states, such as Colorado, even prescribe contraceptives. Some run diabetes management or smoking cessation programs. Medications can be complicated, and without a live person to talk to, patients can struggle to take them correctly.

In Walden, locals are one snowstorm, one mishap, from being cut off from their meds.
That uncertainty leaves Whitney Milek with constant anxiety. Her younger son, 8-year-old Wade, relies on medications to control his seizures. She usually picks up his medicines in Laramie, where the family does its big grocery runs. But when she needs to refill in between trips, she turns to her neighbors for help.
The informal system runs primarily through a Facebook group created in 2013 as a sort of online garage sale. For years, people have been posting to ask if anybody is headed toward a pharmacy and can bring back a prescription. Neighbors deliver to neighbors, even during the pandemic, and no money is exchanged.
“There are times when nobody is going and you end up having to have them mailed, which is a whole other thing, especially with seizure meds,” Milek said. “Some are controlled substances and they can’t mail them.”
Two winters ago, Milek called in one of her son’s prescriptions to a Steamboat Springs pharmacy. But when she arrived, the medication was out of stock. With road conditions rapidly worsening, she asked if the pharmacy would mail the medication but was told she lived too close for mail delivery. She turned to a pharmacy in Laramie, which eventually agreed to mail it to her — but also didn’t have it in stock.
“So, he ended up going five days without,” Milek said. “It’s not a big deal if you miss a dose here or there. But when you miss that many over a period of time, your tolerance level goes down.”
That medication must be carefully managed to build up gradually in Wade’s blood to avoid a severe allergic reaction. It took three weeks to scale up to his daily dose when he started taking the drug two years ago.
“When he went five days without it, he had to basically start all over again. It was over Christmas break, so he wasn’t in school. I brought him to work with me because I didn’t feel comfortable leaving him with anybody else,” said Milek, a bookkeeper. “I didn’t know what was going to happen.”
Tumblr media
Wade was fortunate to avoid complications that time. But having a local pharmacy mail medications comes with added costs — $26, in their case, for a prescription last month — an extra tax on those who cannot get to a pharmacy. Mail-order pharmacies typically don’t charge for shipping yet can run into snags, too. Last year, some of Wade’s mailed medications got stuck in a Denver processing facility for three weeks. The Mileks had to pay $1,600 out-of-pocket to get replacements.
Walden has no hospital, only a small clinic where Dr. Lynnette Telck and a nurse practitioner care for residents. The clinic stocks some basic medications to handle routine acute needs — antibiotics for strep throat, inhalers for asthma — and they can mix up liquid suspensions for those who can’t swallow pills.
“It’s a small town, so we all wear many hats,” Telck said.
Studies show that, without a drugstore nearby, patients aren’t as likely to keep up with their medications and their chronic conditions can worsen. Without readily available medications, Telck said, patients can end up taking an ambulance to an emergency room.
“It’s just so darn expensive to the system,” she said.
Walden touts itself as the moose-viewing capital of Colorado and is a recreation mecca for hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. But Telck said it could be hard to attract a pharmacist because the town lacks amenities like movie theaters and shopping malls.
“It’s pristine and wonderful in its own quirky way and we love it,” she said. “But not a lot of people want to come to rural areas. The wages aren’t as high as in the big cities.”
Middle Park Health, the Granby-based hospital system that operates the Walden clinic, had looked at putting a more complete pharmacy in the clinic but couldn’t find a technician to staff it.
“The days of that being a profitable, desirable business? It’s a lot tougher than it was a decade or two ago,” said Gina Moore, an associate dean at the University of Colorado’s School of Pharmacy. “You come out of eight years of college — four years of undergraduate and four years of pharmacy school — with pretty significant student loan debt. It’s very hard to go to a rural community where you don’t make any money.”
In towns without an ER or a clinic open late, pharmacists often become the health provider of last resort. They tell patients whether they need to make the long trek to a hospital late at night or can wait until morning.
“A patient will often come to the pharmacy as the first point of access for health care,” Moore said. “Our pharmacists are taught to understand and to be able to advise people on what can be self-treated with over-the-counter medications versus when you need to see a higher-level provider or an urgent care.”
Researchers from the Rural Policy Research Institute at the University of Iowa have documented how the deck is increasingly stacked against community pharmacies.
“It’s just not a really attractive business model anymore,” said Keith Mueller, the institute’s director.
In 2013, they found that new Medicare Part D drug plans resulted in low and late reimbursements, replacing direct out-of-pocket payments from customers. That left many pharmacies unable to turn a profit. By 2018, surveys showed pharmacies were struggling more with the narrowing margin between what they paid for the drugs and what they were being reimbursed by health plans.
Towns of more than 10,000 people are often served by at least a Walmart or a supermarket pharmacy, Mueller said.
“But you get out into smaller communities, the predominant modality had been the corner drugstore,” he said. “We’re not seeing that replacement of the closed independents by a CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreens.”
The Mileks have talked about whether they should move near her family in Wyoming to be closer to a hospital and pharmacy.
“When you can’t get to a pharmacy, it’s scary, because things can happen so fast,” Milek said. “People just have no concept of what it’s like out here.”
