I remember someone saying "there's no such thing as a good racism allegory" and it's been bouncing around in my head for a while. I'm someone who typically thinks anything can work if given the right circumstances, but then I really started thinking about it and I believe they're right

Because if you want to talk about racism, you should just talk about racism

(This is unpolished and ramble-y, so strap yourselves in)

Racism is deeply ingrained into our society, no matter where you live. Imperialism and colonialism has ensured that no corner of Earth has been left untouched. Choices from hundreds of years ago are still being felt today. There's practically no end to the discussion of its effects on the world and its people

So, why should anyone feel the need to dress it up in cat ears?

I've consumed a lot of media where writers have consciously echoed in part some aspect of racism in their fantasy story: Bright 2017, Dragon Age, RWBY, the MCU, Harry Potter, Detroit: Become Human, etc. The biggest thing they have in common is that the narrative is told to side with the victims, but it somehow always ends up against them

It always sides with the status quo

It's confusing, maddening even, because the narrative oft goes out of its way to show how horrible the system is and how these folk don't deserve their treatment, so why are we going back to normal as if it's a good thing? Why are the people actively working to improve the system decried as annoying at best and monstrous at worst?

Then you look at the people who write these storylines. The beliefs they hold, the people they vote for, which charities and organizations they give to, and it all makes sense. Centrists (at best) trying to look progressive are the ones who need to dress racism up in cat ears and rainbow freckles. They set aside the long, brutal histories and crushing systemic realities to play pretend that racism is Not That Bad and is only done by Those Bad Individuals

That's why Velvet's ears are tugged instead of culled. That's why the Mantle drunkards say mean things to Blake instead of attempting to assault her. That's why everything surrounding the SDC's labor practices is so vague as to be useless while the biggest evidence of their malice is hand-waved away by a writer who says the victim "had it coming" as if someone can deserve being branded by being too much of a brat

These stories aren't meant to make the audience question why our society works off the bloodied backs of the exploited or demands we take good, hard looks at ourselves and how we've been duped into believing so much garbage about entire swathes of people. They're meant to satisfy the people who only feel bad that these things are happening because they (white folk) look like the bad guys. It's a self-congratulatory wank about how "I'm not like THOSE guys, therefore I'm a good person!"

And then there's the characters meant to convey this story in the first place: always inoffensive, mostly aimless, "not like the other girl" types that pander to that delicate palate. Blake - a conventionally attractive, pale skinned girl in fashionable clothes - used to be passionate about equality but only in the right way, and demonizes anyone who does not conform to this mindset despite having no reasoning to back it up while never once demanding better of the privileged people around her even when they do racially insensitive things

The biggest downfall of these racial allegories, be they about cat girls or orcs or elves or robots, is that they do something that marginalized folk have been forced to endure since the dawn of time: literal dehumanization. There are tangible differences between humans and whatever the allegory is, which undermines the very fundamental fact that black/asian/queer/neurodivergent/disabled/whatever folk are unapologetically, undeniably, exceedingly human. By dressing up their plights in cat ears or spottled blue skin, you're creating theater not for the people who actually live through these struggles as a means of connecting with them and providing them a safe outlet for their feelings, but giving the people who benefit from passively allowing the system to enforce said struggles a pat on the head for not being the grand wizard

I don't really know where I'm going or how to end this, so I'll just sign off with if you're going to talk about racism, just talk about racism

For those of you who can read/write aurebesh: you’re great. You’re a real one.

I use it all the time when writing in public on like a notepad or on my phone. Nobody, except those who took the time to learn aurebesh, can even begin to read it. It’s hilarious.

Another note: Artists who use aurebesh to hide funny messages are great. I love reading the stuff in the background and seeing something funny written down. It’s like a little inside joke and I am here for it.

I'm convinced that people still angry about Legends and complain about how much better it is than the ST have only read maybe... 3 or 5 Legends stories.

I get why people don't like TLJ Luke, but you're absolutely nuts if you think that Bitter Old Man Luke is worse than that time Luke pulled a Wonder Woman 84 with one of his students.

Or that time a planet's worth of Sith came back (don't ask, it's complicated) and Luke was fine slaughtering each and every one of them except for the one conveniently young enough to date his son.

Your comments and tags on the reblogged post about the givens of sci-fi in writing had me cackling. Not because there's anything wrong with your advice (of having a dumbass character) or anything but because of your tags (that Rhi is that dumbass).

The problem here is that while Rhi is absolutely the 'the engine went bad' one, but because the problem for you as the author is that Rhi has an ultra-competent and patient boyfriend who has no qualms about trying to re-explain exactly what went wrong or how 😅

Okay, Elle, when you're that spot on your point has to be shared with the class.

First, 'cuz it might need to be said: Rhi Shepard is smart. Low intelligence is not a requirement for being a Load-bearing Dumbass!

In fact, being smart probably plays into the solution to the problem, because she's not just ignorant of some things, she's aggressively ignorant of them. Because otherwise I WOULD have exactly the problem you mention, where Joker knows all the math so I can't get out of it -- and this is half the reason Rhi is not just bad at math, but has a math aversion. So if he starts she can say "FUCK, NO MATH" and start teasing him about being a nerdy spacer boy.

She lays the dumbass on thick to:

make people cut to the chase (Maybe she could've understood the long explanation, but why should she have to?)

make people underestimate her

give herself a break from being the Big Decision Maker

annoy people named Liara

save the author from having to write details about pretend physics

Having all of these competent nerds around is absolutely a problem, so it's really, really helpful if the ranking officer is someone who says "Spare me the details, what's the upshot?"

(It's also super handy that her experience of her biotics is very primal. I can write about what she feels, not what she's doing or how she's doing it.)

Joker is less of a problem than you'd think. I don't have to think about how he flies the ship; I know he's so good at it that it's an extension of himself, so if I describe what the ship does, we're golden. That's how he's thinking of it! And I can distract him with… basically anything.

But Kaidan is trouble, and Ness is worse. Nerds.

(Ness is useful in that she's the Newcomer, so she can notice things about living on a military spaceship the others don't think about anymore! But then she's also a grad-student in a field that doesn't exist. So. Yeah).

I'm enough of a language geek to get way into how the translators work, but 'what useful thing does she figure out to break this ancient code' kept me spiraling for a while. I had to actually think it was so tragic. In the long run, I'm worrying too much: it's sci-fi fanfic of a game with extra-galactic robosquid, as long as I don't directly rip off Carl Sagan I'm fine, right? But ARGH.

So I wrote the details of one part to show there's really something going on there, and after that...

“This is wonderful,” Liara said. “How did you figure it out?” Ness moved towards the projection, eager to explain. Rhi set the plate down on her bunk and started to back away. “Don’t even bother trying to explain to her,” Liara said. “Just point me at the things you want shot,” Rhi agreed amiably, and made her escape.

Thank goodness for my load-bearing Commander dumbass.

Holo-novels aren’t novels, they’re video games

#I GUESS they can be choose-your-own-adventure novels #until I mentally framed them as video games I would always get caught up on how they know what they’re supposed to do in the narrative #holodeck load screen giving you background info like in photons be free #they get that little error noise every time they stray too far from the narrative #or like in lower decks the computer generates a different ai narrative for you #can’t call them holo video games though #holo rpg #nothing wrong with either format but you engage differently with novels and video games #but video games still have a narrative that can go in many directions depending on how you play #who controls the narrative the author or the lector #choose your own adventure books were very big in the 90s #I would always read the whole thing #how very like me to get hung up on insignificant details in the Star Trek universe #hot holodeck discourse over here #star trek voyager #sonic shower thoughts
