I’m trying to imagine the audacity of saying that the US needs to stop supporting Ukraine because they’re “forcing Ukrainians to die” like Ukrainians aren’t choosing to fight regardless of the US’s decisions. Because whether the US does continue to support Ukraine, the existential threat to Ukraine remains, and the only other option is the inevitable slaughter of Ukrainians if Russia is allowed through.

Will they ever stop westsplaining? It's a shame that western commentators continue to routinely describe countries that were forced to spend a tiny fraction of their history as part of the Soviet Union, or the Soviet bloc, as "former Soviet" or "post-Soviet" or "ex-Soviet satellite" states, even though the USSR has been dead as a dodo for decades.
Strangely enough, you'll never see the same people referring to "the former Nazi state of Germany", or "America, the former slave-trading British colony", or even "Moscow, the former provincial Mongolian village".
Hopefully, condescending terms like "former Soviet", the stereotypes that go with them and the pernicious idea that these independent countries still somehow belong to "Russia's sphere of influence", will eventually disappear as they continue to develop and evolve, but I'm not holding my breath….

Being Ukrainian, born in Russia, with family friends in both countries is an insane experience. A literal distillation of convos from the last few months:
Ukrainians: We haven’t had a full night of sleep since February. No running water for months now, and now the electricity goes out. They’re bombing us non-stop. They aim for the houses at night, and the city center and offices and schools during the day, to kill as many civilians as possible. I sent my daughter to relative safety in Kyiv, but I don’t want to leave my mother, who had a stroke due to war-induced stress and is paralyzed. The hospitals wouldn’t take her because they were full of war casualties. She lies in bed and we hope that a missile doesn’t strike our building, because she can’t go to the bomb shelter. I’ll try to call you next time we get electricity.
Russians: Ugh its so expensive to travel to Turkey right now, we decided to take a two week holiday in Sochi instead. It’s not as nice but we have to persevere. Oh, what’s that? The news? I try not too pay too much attention to it when I’m using my VPN to access instagram and twitter, it just makes me soo sad. You know I’m not political. Hopefully this little war-sy is over soon, because I have to redecorate my house and Ikea is still closed.
Westerners whose entire political philosophy is “vibes” and who think cyrillic is a type of salad: yeah, yeah. bombing, missiles, blah BLAH yawn. Frankly the real war crime is being mean to Russians on the internet.

Getting very annoyed with the screeching how "libs and centrists are, if not borderline fascists, handmaidens for fascism" when it's always, always self-proclaimed leftists you catch dick-riding and sympathising with the most-authoritarian right-wing movements imaginable. But yeah, horseshoe theory isn't real.

A “progressive” “leftist” American who supports Russia’s invasion of Ukraine (or is indifferent) is just fucking like a “progressive” “centrist” Democrat who supports the police
They’re both paternalistic viewpoints, and they completely ignore the voices of those who are most negatively impacted
Sooner or later, eventually they both end up parroting the same extreme fucking propaganda that favors the aggressors and oppressors

A Soviet's Prayer - That Didn't Happen
Upon telling people about the horrors of communism as someone whose family still bears the emotional scars, I often come across a particularly hurtful comment from Western leftists
"USSR wasn't real communism" And I believed it, until a talk with a person born in Vietnam who complained that she couldn't talk with Westerners about the horrors of communism because she'd get the same reaction snapped me out of it Why is this phrase so hurtful to CEEs?
Well, first of all, when you say that USSR communism wasn't real communism, you're dismissing the lived experience of not just me, but millions of people
By telling us that our experience isn't real, you're invalidating us
You're asserting yourself, a privileged Western leftist who never grew up in the USSR above us, who did and whose homes and lives are still threatened by the USSR's successor, Russia
So, what can you do?
The same thing you tell others to do. CHECK YOUR GODDAMN PRIVILEGE AND LISTEN! You talk about listening to marginalized people, so take your own advice and LISTEN TO US!
Critically examine your chosen leftist political system the same way you examine capitalism with emphasis on CEEs' lived experiences
Sit down and examine your cognitive dissonance. Why does it make you feel uncomfortable when people with lived experience tell you "hey, our experience with communism fucking SUUUUUUCKED" to the point where you have to dismiss our lived experience?
Don't say that the USSR communism wasn't real communism. It was real to us This is part 1 of 6 of my script notes for my upcoming comic, The Soviet's Prayer, which is a rageucational comic about the pain of a CEE leftist when dealing with Westerners

millions can be murdered under the hammer sickle, thousands of bombs dropped for the russian soul, and we can’t so much cringe at these things because muh russophobia and red scare, but a nazi says “я люблю борщ” and now Ukraine needs a new national dish so as to not offend the westerners as they read Dostoyevsky without a thought for the Circassians

WESTSPLAINING: how ignorant westerners condescendingly explain both current affairs and the history of central and eastern Europe from a purely western perspective, while generally demonstrating their complete lack of understanding and total disdain for the experience of the people in the region (who tend to be infintely more knowledgeable about what's going on in their own countries at present and what happened in the past)….
A typical example would be people from western countries (who never experienced the joy of living under Russian or Soviet occupation) westsplaining to those "over emotional" eastern Europeans about how it really wasn't that bad, while lecturing them about Russia's "legitimate security concerns"….

WWII gave the world two lessons. One, “just following orders” isn’t a thing. Two, you can’t commit atrocities on such a monstrous scale without having the support of your population. Heart-warming to see precisely none of this has been internalized.
