Yes; he had done it. She was in the carriage, and felt that he had placed her there, that his will and his hands had done it, that she owed it to his perception of her fatigue, and his resolution to give her rest. She was very much affected by the view of his disposition towards her, which all these things made apparent. This little circumstance seemed the completion of all that had gone before. She understood him. He could not forgive her, but he could not be unfeeling. Though condemning her for the past, and considering it with high and unjust resentment, though perfectly careless of her, and though becoming attached to another, still he could not see her suffer, without the desire of giving her relief. It was a remainder of former sentiment; it was an impulse of pure, though unacknowledged friendship; it was a proof of his own warm and amiable heart, which she could not contemplate without emotions so compounded of pleasure and pain, that she knew not which prevailed.

The more the time passes, the more convinced I am that a reading of Jane Eyre that omits the theme of mercy as key to the story is incomplete at best and bad at worst.
#jane eyre#i think this is at the root of all the insidious and useless darcy vs rochester comparisons#because ultimately the wrong Austen heroes do is forgivable#the effects of their sins are more or less easily reversable#such as Darcy's pride and rudeness or Wentworth's pettiness#there is mercy being served with atonement#but it isn't a radical mercy#which I think is the point in Jane Eyre#Rochester's attempted bigamy is beyond justification#it can only be understood as sourced in stupidity and immaturity rather than in true wickedness#it can also be understood as part of the way he was raised up and the sins of his own father#but cannot be justified#Rochester can only be either hated and shunned or loved and forgiven#there's no possibility of indifference#the characters that create the most unhappiness to themselves and others in this novel are those who live without mercy#and those who act with mercy the opposite#Rochester's redemption is possible because he has shown mercy to others#at least sometimes like Adele and his first years with Bertha#st John can have everything in his favor and yet his mercilessness makes him a figure of fear for Jane#Jane's deliberate choice to show mercy again and again IS essential to the story#Jane Eyre is a bildungsroman AND a romance because of it#readings that seek to turn Rochester into a complete forever villain#i.e. he is a liar and he actually tortured Bertha into madness#are ultimately readings that want a reason to reject any sort of mercy for him#by making him incapable of good and repentance

In serious danger of becoming obsessed with Deadloch. It's a comedy-drama Australian take on British/Scandi murder noirs, starring the lesbian custodian of a small town's only braincells, and while it takes a while to start showing off just how smart it is, it's very good indeed.
It's from the Katering Show's Kates, so there are plenty of laugh out loud moments, and some very keen commentary on the genre, small towns, gentrification, and lesbians and our not-innacurate social clichés. But there's also a surprisingly well crafted mystery I'm genuinely invested in. Massively recommend.

I have apparently decided to rewatch Prison Break, and after watching the first episode, I would like to say that first, I love Wentworth Miller. And second, it's so cool to think about all the planning he put into all of this. He researched the inmates and the prison doctor, along with others at the jail. He set things into motion before he even got arrested, like the John Abruzzi thing. Not to mention the huge, elaborate tattoo with the blueprints hidden it, plus the fact that his architecture firm ghost worked on the building.
It's so interesting and I'm excited to see more of the thought process behind it!

What are your queer headcanons for Spartacus characters? I'm curious 👀
Some of these are based on stuff in canon, others are just me thinkin' my thoughts. They're also for characters who aren't explicitly shown to be queer, such as Nasir, Agron, Saxa, Lucretia, and so on.
Spartacus is bi or pan. He was absolutely in love with Varro, and I think he also had a thing for Crixus and Nasir (Granted, I think everyone had a thing for Nasir and it's only because Agron made a move first that he didn't have half the camp vying for his affections.) The scene in Fugitvus where he and Aurelia are talking about what made them love Varro- "A lop-sided grin, eyes promising mischief."
"I fell to love the crooked bend of Varro's lips, long before the man himself."
"As did I."
Like, what about that doesn't scream being in love?
Also, fun fact, before Liam McIntyre took the role, Wentworth Miller was being considered for Spartacus, and I am going to daydream about that forfuckingever while sending Steven DeKnight mental messages to cast him in the new series that's supposed to be coming up.
Crixus is demi. He says that he's not interested in sex when he first joined the ludus, and it's only when he falls for Naevia that he's shown being attracted to anyone. And when Naevia finds herself sex repulsed, he's cool with their relationship not being physical. I know this isn't strictly an ace thing but I still love it.
Gannicus is one that I can't decide exactly. I firmly believe that he and Oenomaeus were in love with each other as much as they were with Melitta. The running theme throughout the show of characters talking of being reunited with their loves in the afterlife, then having Oenomaeus being there waiting patiently for Gannicus when he dies is amazing, I can't lie.
Lugo was one of the dozen or so men who probably would have enjoyed a bit of bed warming from Nasir. They're both so flirty with each other as time goes on. He strikes me as being 'Pretty women? Yeah! Pretty men? Yeah! Pretty individual who is neither man nor woman? Yeah! Lugo love all! Come to my tent, pretty person! Lugo will keep you warm!'
Caesar is.... Well, he's Caesar, so I'm genuinely surprised there weren't any scenes of him fucking his way through the rebellion.
I'd love to hear if you have any thoughts of your own, and I'm sorry this took a while for me to answer!

When we watched bsg I drove 🐝 crazy bc I wouldn't give her any spoilers (no real fan would it is best experienced fresh) and just said "wait and see" in a really annoying voice over and over and now we're watching Wentworth, which she has seen but I somehow haven't, and I have spent an entire season loudly yelling about how much I hate Kaz and how badly I want her to die (in like a really humiliating way, preferably) and now it's 🐝's turn to smugly say "wait and see". I promised her I won't look up spoilers but good god do I hate Kaz

let's talk about netflix's persuasion
I do want to jump on the hate bandwagon over Netflix's newest adaptation of Persuasion, a literal masterpiece by no other than Jane Austen.
There are exactly two things that really tick me off (alright that may be a lie, there are many things I didn't like about the movie, but still, I can understand the changes to appeal to newer audiences), so I'll try to be concise:
The girl boss-ification of Anne Elliot. I get it, we all want to see a 'strong, independent, girl boss' female protagonist be in charge of her own life, but to anyone who's read the book, they know Anne Elliot is the total opposite. She's been persuaded (hence the name) her entire life to do what others wanted her to do, for them. Anne Elliot is no Emma Woodhouse or Lizzy Bennet; Anne Elliot is the introverted, kind, selfless, feminine, tormented heroine, that a lot of people in this world are. These people deserve to be the main character too without having to become the 'not-like-other-girls' girl that has ruled these past decades' media. Let Anne Elliot be Anne Elliot.
The non-existent slow burn between Anne and Captain Wentworth. These two share a past, they almost got married almost a decade ago before Anne was persuaded not to due to his lack of title and wealth. We see her regret that decision every day, even before he comes back. And when he does, there is this thick air around them constantly, because nobody but them knows about their history, and Captain Wentworth internally struggles with his own feelings (he's bitter and arrogant and has the clear intention of moving on yet he's desperately and silently still in love with Anne). Most of the novel is literally them pining after the other, with longing looks across the room and very few interactions. But it's those interactions that indicate their love for each other. Arguably, one of my favorite moments between the two is when he helps her up on the carriage: he wordlessly hoists her up and she's left thinking about that for days. It's the first public display of affection, or at least, positive recognition of each other's existence. It's the little moments, the daily-life acts of service that show the type of domestic love they crave. And it really sucks that the movie feels empty without them.
I think that's all for now. I've seen many interesting video essays about this that I can link if anybody's interested, but yeah, I just wanted to add a couple of things to the mix. Jane Austen is my absolute favorite author, and it just felt like the movie didn't do the book justice.

Screamed the entire time for Eddie to fucken shower, was landed when she changed clothes, still not sure she's actually clean though
😂
Had the murderer pegged from the start, though I had a lil blip in the middle!
Watch it, it's fucken great!
