So, I didn’t mean to read two “catfish” romance books in a row. Just kind of happened!
Question is, which one did it better?
Also, this is your ***Spoiler Warning!***
Bride of the Shadow King
Firstly, this is a fantasy book, so catfishing usually applies to creating a false identity online, but still going to refer to this book as such, because the main character has magic used on her to create a false identity for herself. Just go with it…
I’ll admit, the cover for this book hooked me. I mean look at it. Absolutely gorgeous! I had caught snippets of the story on Instagram: arranged marriage, fantasy, epic. And once the author had the book up on sale, I was sold.
But then I read it…
For like half the book, I was honestly really loving it. The world building was great, I liked the conflict presented and how the troll king needed the human mages to deal with a problem in his kingdom and the human king needed the troll soldiers to deal with his fae problem. Pretty solid stuff in my opinion, and to secure the alliance, the king was marrying off his favorite daughter to the troll king.
But the story follows the oldest sister, Faraine, who is not the favorite, and on her way back to her father’s castle, she “runs into” the troll king. So, they spend time together on the journey and there’s a spark between them, but they can’t pursue it, because King Vor is set to marry her younger sister.
So, the author hits another trope -forbidden love- and I am all here for it. The build of where this story might be heading was making me excited.
But then I hit the midpoint and all the warm feelings in my stomach turned to anxiety and…ick?
So, realizing that the alliance was more important than their infatuation with each other, Vor marries Faraine’s sister and returns home to prepare for her arrive. Faraine returns to her convent, but then she receives some rather horrific news. The fae have killed her sister. Faraine is brought back home, and through magic, she is to take her sister’s name…and her face. Faraine actually does try to fight it and tell her parents to just explain to the King Vor what happened with his bride but the parents are like, “No. This alliance is too important. You will lie and deceive the king, have him bed you, and after the magic fades, you can deal with the consequences afterward.” Great parents…
Already, I was not on board, but decided to keep reading to see if this ridiculous plan would work or not.
Then the story took a rather violent, and horrific/disturbing turn, and having set my expectations of this book before I had read it, I wasn’t prepared for the dark turn. I’m all for a dark book, but I would like to have at least some mental preparation before I enter it. With this one, I didn’t. But I kept reading.
So, wearing her sister’s face, Faraine does her best to be her sister in front of her new husband, and then we get to the consummation scene, and he’s being very gentle with her and following her lead and cues, but the whole time, I just had this sour feeling in the pit of my stomach. Vor thinks he is about to bed the younger sister, but after some fiddling around, he comes to realize that it is not the sister, and in fact, it’s Faraine.
He’s mad, and yes, I agree, he should be mad! The human king deceived him; his own people who he trusted hadn’t detected the magic in Faraine. But throughout the story and in his POV, he can’t stop thinking about Faraine and their connection, but he does his best to get her out of his head, so he can be fully focused on the sister who is his bride. And maybe with time, they can be happy together. So, yeah, I’m glad he was pissed off.
Faraine ends up on the chopping block but Vor stops it last minute and sends her prison and that’s where the book ends. I was on the fence about reading the second one, but then I saw a review that mentioned how with the sequel, Vor and Faraine never talk or communicate, but only lust after each other and that’s when I closed the door on this series.
Wasn’t for me. The catfishing went too far in my opinion, but you know, maybe that was the point and the author nailed it. I had been expecting a fluffy, fantasy, monster smut book, but that wasn’t what I got at all, and maybe it was my fault for not looking further into reviews or summaries before picking it up. But lesson learned. Read a handle of reviews to get the vibe of the book before reading it.
Well Played
This is the sequel to “Well Met”, a contemporary romance series centered around this small town that puts on a Ren Faire every year, and with each book we follow a love story with a different girl in town, and her romantic journey to finding her man.
With this book, we have Stacey, who has been living in this town all her life and feels that she isn’t doing anything with her life, while everyone around her seems to have their own life going forward, but she feels stuck. For the past couple of Faire summers, she’s been having a fling with one of the performance group members that comes to their fair.
One drunk night, she writes that member a long message about how she wants more than the fling going on. Sadly, she ended up writing it on their band’s public page. Ouch. But the guy ends up writing back, but I’m just going to skip all the back and forth and reveal that it wasn’t the guy she thought she was messaging and building a relationship with, but the guy’s cousin Daniel, who is the band manager.
So, yeah, as you can imagine, once Stacey found out, she felt a little betrayed and hurt. I mean, who wouldn’t? You build a connection with someone and tell them personal things about your life, thinking they’re this person, but then it’s revealed they’re someone else…I’d be angry too.
But I think she handled it well, giving Daniel the change to come clean, which he kind of lost brownie points there when he tried to keep lying until Stacey proved that it was him.
I’m not saying, I’m all for the idea of catfishing. But at least in this book, Stacey and Daniel talked about it, and he explained his reasoning about why he kept it going. The guy is kind of full of insecurities and flaws, and he and Stacey had been on friendly terms, and he kind of had a crush on her, but since she had eyes for his much hotter cousin, he didn’t think he had a shot with her, until he starting messaging her as his cousin.
And even in the book, they compared it to a Cyrano situation, lol.
Overall, I appreciated that Stacey and Daniel talked about how their relationship was built on lies, but chose to continue it and try to move past it. And even by then, Stacey wasn’t really into the other hotter cousin anymore, because even throughout their online relationship, she picked up hits that this wasn’t the guy she thought she was messaging. But still, it was wrong of Daniel and I appreciated that he apologized for his actions.
It was another cute, comfort story, with minimal conflict, and I can’t wait to dive into the next one.
So, yeah…I think in the future, I’ll be a little more careful when selecting arranged marriage stories. I don’t want to judge anyone who did like Bride of the Shadow King. If you loved the story, good on you! Glad you did! It just wasn’t the right cup of tea for me. But I still think the author is great with her world building so I might see what else she has put out.
Anyway, if you made it this far, thanks for reading my rant/review of these two books. And if you’ve read either one, let me know your thoughts!

Can we share headcanons cause I wanna know your opinions on mine!
I have a headcanon that just to annoy Dust the Player would probably just make fun of him. Joke about how kills people or attacks. Calls him short and flirts in derogatory ways. Pokes fun at his past loved ones and when he kills the player they claim jokingly he's a husband/wife/non-binary spouse beater. They are just the silliest little killer you've ever seen how could you ever be mad at them!
Just a smug bastard!
oh definitely.
I see them having a whole bunch of different sides.
a cruel apathetic side that LOVES the chase. they'll casually wait around on purpose to let him get more LV just to pin him down and give themselves more of a challenge. or sabotage his attempts by warning other monster or scarring them away. they mock him just to grin at his sweet sweet pretty HATEFUL GLARE.
a playful careless and reckless side that LOVES the attention and mind games he plays with them. they love getting stabbed in the back or feeling the surprise if having the rug pulled from beneath their feet when they thought they had a steady grip on their blade. they love his expressions, his reactions. SPECIALLY when he's angry. they try messing with him just to rile him up.
it was effective at first but then dust learns quickly and becomes unresponsive to their taunts or flirting.
they try to mask their weaknesses with these cruel jokes. to tell themselves and remind themselves it's just a silly little game they shouldn't take too seriously. casually joking about killing his family or... him being bad at exp farming... or...
it used to be fun... but now it just feels like they're pushing against a lie. a big lie that they don't care about this world.
they do. not the world that came before. they're attached to this hellscape purgatory of their own making. this desolate wasteland filled with monster dust feels like home.
and the third side they desperately pretend that doesn't exist...
tw: angst warning (self sabotage)
tw: potential triggers maybe
a saddened and broken sympathetic side they hide away because it'll only make things worse. sympathy is just an insult added to injury that they refuse to throw at sans. because they already know his response. of course they would. it's only natural. they would hate themselves too... they... do hate themselves! it's why it feels SO good when HE'S the one winning. they can feel a sense of relief. a sense of triumphant victory over the big bad evil human who they can project their own problems on. they wished they had his courage. his dedication. his sheer WILLPOWER to face their demons too. but no. they can't just GIVE him the win can they? no he has to struggle. he has to TAKE it from them. like the disgusting trash they are!
they don't have the RIGHT to be sorry. no they chose this and they'll STICK TO IT TILL THE END. they WANT this. right? they've always wanted this. but they feel empty. so empty. so pointless. and it always ends up in a way that the world just... forgets? if it means SCARRING the world to MAKE it remember them? so be it.
if it means they'll be a villain? SO BE IT! so much being a savior of monster kind did for them anyway.
it doesn't mean they don't care. it doesn't mean they sadistically enjoy seeing dust suffer. it gives them a sense of catharsis. they don't LIKE hurting him. but they also enjoy seeing it happen so that he can PAY IT BACK TENFOLD. they feel powerful when he takes them down. wishing that maybe their problems would just... vanish.
seeing his pained expression breaks their heart but also... makes them feel more understood somehow. makes them happy. it makes the sad. it's so bittersweet. so ironically HIM. it excites them. it makes them want to cry.
it makes their numb heart FEEL something. and they're addicted to it.
they're not a monster. just a person trapped in their obsession. someone who never had their closure and was stuck in the past. someone who would not let things go even if it meant they were also the one hurting.
but they're also quite silly and goofy. making jokes and doing the randomest unpredictable bullshit possible to throw dust off.
all in all I think they're ALL of the above to some extent. the do feel guilt and shame. they do get rage baited and extremely pissed at an unfair kill. they would scream at the screen with an angry face, and would laugh their ass off if dust gives them an unexpected reaction.
they're still them. despite everything.

Just what is it with the Honkai games and Finnish names? First we have Welt Yang whose real name is Joachim Nokianvirtanen and now we have Sampo Koski. These are some very Finnish names, especially Sampo’s.
Sampo is not only a common Finnish first name but it is also the name of a magical object which could grant you riches in the Finnish national epic poem Kalevala (from the early 1800s).
Koski is just a common surname which roughly translates to ’rapids’.
What’s more interesting is that these two names have been put together. In Kalevala, there is this character called Louhi from Pohjola (the North) who fights with Väinämöinen for the sampo while on a boat at the sea. So the fact that they’ve paired the name ’Sampo’ with the name ’Koski’ is either just one hell of a coincidence or a wellplayed Kalevala reference by Hoyoverse. Or then I’m just reading too much into it.
