Book Review: ‘The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt’ #7
Tumblr media
The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt (Hey, How About Treason?), Vol. 7 by Toru Toba My rating: 5 of 5 stars For the first time in a long time, nobody wants Wein Salema Arbalest hanging around. Everybody knows the eastern half of the Varno Continent is in chaos, having neared three full years without consensus emperorship. Everybody knows the three major factions, guided by the three crown princes, each possess its own strengths (Demetrio, the eldest, holds sway with traditionalists; Bardloche, stubborn, oversees the military; Manfred, youngest and silver-tongued, is the face of nouveau riche). The Earthworld Empire is in chaos, and this chaos has its known variables. So why in the heck is Wein sitting in a strategy meeting among the princes in a city outside the imperial capital? GENIUS PRINCE . . . #7 is an excellent blend of military schema, good old fashioned castle politics, and brazen inter-territorial statecraft. This is the type of story most readers of the novel series fell in love with at the onset and have thus craved ever since. Wein finds his delegation ensnared in Lowellmeina's multifaceted trap. Will he aide one of her troubled (incompetent) brothers' ascent to the throne? Will he draft the blueprint for their downfall? Will he assume responsibility for his role in either destinies? Lowa may have set things in motion by encouraging Wein to visit the Earthworld Empire during such a tumultuous event, but the young woman doesn't quite realize how capricious of a variable she's thrown into play. Because, in truth, due to past and recent events, everyone worth their salt absolutely and resolutely fears the crown prince of Natra. Wein's reputation precedes him. He's intelligent and resourceful, yes. But he's also unquestionably ruthless. He doesn't hesitate to draw his blade. And he manifests escape routes for every scenario not because he knows he'll need it, but because he's clever enough to know the number of ways everyone else's plans tend to go to crap. So, Demetrio, Bardloche, and Manfred bicker to the brink of civil war. Lowa rides the waves of domestic uncertainty to raise her profile. And Wein is forced into position as an unwitting arbiter and dealmaker. This is the stage for GENIUS PRINCE . . . #7. Wein knows he's in a tough spot, but his navigation of difficulty isn't what marks this novel as particularly brilliant. What's fascinating is how everyone else acts or reacts to the mere knowledge that Wein is in the next tent over, strategizing away. Glen Markham, devoted to Demetrio, is an old friend. He thinks he knows Wein well enough to sniff out the man's multi-front distractions. But can Glen convince others he's on the right trail? Strang Nanos, devoted to Manfred, is another old friend. He's confident he can hit Wein's flank before Wein himself can outflank their forces. But will thinking two or three steps ahead be sufficient? This novel privileges the strategy and tactics that make Wein the exceptionally arrogant and exceptionally capable ruler he is. He's often caught off guard, but he readily adapts. He accepts that others know and fear him, but he manipulates them because of it. He's careful with his language and compassionate with his rhetoric, but unyielding with his intentions. Wein doesn't care who becomes the next emperor of the Earthworld Empire. He's fighting for Natra. He's fighting for himself. But if he loses? Well, then everyone should anticipate that it won't be a single army, or a random holy site, that will burn to the ground. Everyone, indeed, absolutely everyone, will succumb to the flames of his sympathy.

When one of your biggest fantasy belly tropes actually becomes real!
So watching "The Genius' Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt", there finally was the setup I've long thought about and I THOUGHT was going to flirt with but indeed went with and it was amazing. I may already plot to make it worse.
Tumblr media
This is Prince Wein Salema Arbalest, a smarmy genius prince that wants to even sell his kingdom to retire (and then promptly forgotten after the first episode.) He keeps making alliances, having battles, and more; all sorta by accident, he just handles them well and improves his nation's standing.
In Episode 11, he's visiting a kingdom whose ruler previously helped him with some refugees when he was visiting a city state in a neighboring Empire, and seeking to forge a trade agreement with them.
Well the King is enormous and even likes to moved around in a palanquin and likes to have feasts. A normal occurrence for royalty such as Prince Wein. He goes along with it and promises not to get distracted by the food and focus on forging that alliance. Despite the fight with his inner self, it doesn't go well.
And now screenshots!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He quickly shifts his focus to learning all he can about their culinary traditions so he can bring them back to his country, but then still his inner voice is telling him not to be distracted by the food.
APPARENTLY I will have to make a reblog of this because there is a limit to images in posts now? Dumb. I'll take the next one instead.

@equinox-vixen  I hope you don’t mind me giving a long, rambling reply in a post instead of a comment! I actually already wrote a long post and then Tumblr was garbage and lost it :’) Now take two! So, from MAL the summary is:
Tensai Ouji no Akaji Kokka Saisei Jutsu/The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt
The King of Natra has fallen ill, leaving the only hope for his kingdom to his son, Prince Wein Salema Arbalest. Known to be capable and wise, he is the perfect candidate to become the prince regent. However, if the prince has anything to say about the matter, he would rather sell off the Kingdom of Natra to the highest bidder! Since he wields the authority of the throne, no one can stop Wein from auctioning off the country and using the profits to retire in comfort. All he needs to do is raise the value of the small kingdom to maximize his gains. But whether Wein's grand plan will succeed remains to be seen, as his wit often surpasses even his own expectations—much to the benefit of the oblivious citizens of Natra.
Tumblr media
I honestly can’t say the plot itself is too much more complicated than that! I had started watching because I was minorly intrigued and hoped it would be a fun time (I nicknamed it “Budget Code Geass with humor in fantasy land” pretty quickly; it has that same format of BIG PROBLEM, then BRAIN GENIUS TIME, and GRAND FINALE, but that’s about what they share). From the first episode I knew I’d at least give it a decent shot because I adored the character dynamics.
Prince Wein just wants to be able to chill and be lazy and it’s a MOOD. He isn’t obnoxiously whiny or annoying about it, mostly just moments of WHY IS LIFE AND POLITICS SO HARD AND WHY DO THEY KEEP HAPPENING TO ME??? every now and again. Which, again, MOOD. It would be far easier for him to increase the worth of his country and just be done with it if he didn’t have a really good heart and genuinely care for others (though he wouldn’t be eager to admit that he does care). And then we have his right-hand lady, Ninym. She’s mostly chill and puts up with exactly 0 of Wein’s shit in the best of ways, I love her and simp her. She’s just as smart as Wein, and Wein knows this and respects the hell our of her--he honestly loves her as a human being, no romantic attachments needed (though the ship potential is there if that interests you, this is just what’s been shown in the anime), they have each other’s back where it counts and genuinely care in the most subtle but meaningful ways, I LOVE them.
Tumblr media
(There are like five gifs total of this show and doesn’t fit the above paragraph, but I loved this moment so I’m adding it)
What you also need to know about Ninym is that her white hair marks her as a race pf people who suffers from extreme prejudice--we don’t see the atrocities done to them in the show so far, but what we hear of their treatment is horrific. Wein shows he refuses to treat these people like that, but because he’s so adept at political plays and games and that garbage I had assumed when push comes to shove... We’d see some of the typical tropes. But nope. No matter their rank or who they are, if someone says shit about Ninym or her people? That’s it. They’re dead. 0 racism is tolerated. I’m not even exaggerating. It’s to the point where, if someone talks shit, I start getting excited because I know what’s coming.
Tumblr media
And from the premise, you may make the assumption that I made, “Here we go, another harem plotline.” The summary seems kinda isekai-trope adjacent, right? So when we eventually had an old female acquaintance show up with some history and a marriage proposal in hand, I thought ah yes. This is it. Here we go again. But it didn’t turn into the usual, tired tropes? Ninym and this new character actually got along great outside of political conflict, and obviously had an established history as well. In fact, when this new character leaves the story (I assume only for now), she says loosely that her endgame is an OT3 with Wein and Ninym.
Tumblr media
It isn’t a show that’s going to blow your mind or anything, the plot isn’t super complex and the characters aren’t overly intricate. But it’s so much fun and it keeps surprising me with how they handle cliche situations. Even while playing up other cliches at the same time. I just watched episode 7 yesterday, and though the antagonists aren’t about to blow my mind with their endgames, the stakes are so much higher and more complex than I was anticipating at the start of this, and I care so much about how all of this will end. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for something fun to watch! (In other words: pls join me, the tag is full of cobwebs and I need more people to scream with.)
Here’s a cute and ominous Ninym to help me sell my point:

Review: As this is the fist book in the series there are equal amounts of room for development of the plot and anticipation of what further volumes would create. I already love the fact that this takes in a Fantasy/Historical-like setting (I am a sucker for this genre currently) and how the opening of the story wasn’t all that cringe… Regardless of it being a LN, The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt: Hey, How About Treason? is an easy and fun read. The protagonist, Wein Salema Arbalest, and his aide, Ninym Ralei, are the cliche duo of childhood friends that harbour feelings for the other that you would find in almost any type of romcom. Luckily for me, the LN does not focus much on romance than Prince Wein’s dilemma on how to pawn off his own Kingdom for an early retirement. Another reason to love the characters that are individually introduced in each chapter is that they either are a relatable bunch or they’re there for a comedic stand-in. Like Raklum, a Commander appointed by Prince Wein himself, who is introduced as this large, bulky man who has a timid personality and yet on the battlefield he would comically go berserk, so far. Another reason that this book has put a smile on my face more than once is the contrast in thoughts that are visible to the reader, you can clearly see how Prince Wein thinks and then how the thoughts of his men would think. I admit, The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt: Hey, How About Treason? is creatively written with priority given to humour above any other genre (this does not mean that anything else is less than humour, they just haven’t fleshed out in Volume 1). It’s hard not to anticipate what future books will convey, and this book is no less of that expectation. I look forward to its future reads in this series.
