Book Review: ‘The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt’ #7
Tumblr media
The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt (Hey, How About Treason?), Vol. 7 by Toru Toba My rating: 5 of 5 stars For the first time in a long time, nobody wants Wein Salema Arbalest hanging around. Everybody knows the eastern half of the Varno Continent is in chaos, having neared three full years without consensus emperorship. Everybody knows the three major factions, guided by the three crown princes, each possess its own strengths (Demetrio, the eldest, holds sway with traditionalists; Bardloche, stubborn, oversees the military; Manfred, youngest and silver-tongued, is the face of nouveau riche). The Earthworld Empire is in chaos, and this chaos has its known variables. So why in the heck is Wein sitting in a strategy meeting among the princes in a city outside the imperial capital? GENIUS PRINCE . . . #7 is an excellent blend of military schema, good old fashioned castle politics, and brazen inter-territorial statecraft. This is the type of story most readers of the novel series fell in love with at the onset and have thus craved ever since. Wein finds his delegation ensnared in Lowellmeina's multifaceted trap. Will he aide one of her troubled (incompetent) brothers' ascent to the throne? Will he draft the blueprint for their downfall? Will he assume responsibility for his role in either destinies? Lowa may have set things in motion by encouraging Wein to visit the Earthworld Empire during such a tumultuous event, but the young woman doesn't quite realize how capricious of a variable she's thrown into play. Because, in truth, due to past and recent events, everyone worth their salt absolutely and resolutely fears the crown prince of Natra. Wein's reputation precedes him. He's intelligent and resourceful, yes. But he's also unquestionably ruthless. He doesn't hesitate to draw his blade. And he manifests escape routes for every scenario not because he knows he'll need it, but because he's clever enough to know the number of ways everyone else's plans tend to go to crap. So, Demetrio, Bardloche, and Manfred bicker to the brink of civil war. Lowa rides the waves of domestic uncertainty to raise her profile. And Wein is forced into position as an unwitting arbiter and dealmaker. This is the stage for GENIUS PRINCE . . . #7. Wein knows he's in a tough spot, but his navigation of difficulty isn't what marks this novel as particularly brilliant. What's fascinating is how everyone else acts or reacts to the mere knowledge that Wein is in the next tent over, strategizing away. Glen Markham, devoted to Demetrio, is an old friend. He thinks he knows Wein well enough to sniff out the man's multi-front distractions. But can Glen convince others he's on the right trail? Strang Nanos, devoted to Manfred, is another old friend. He's confident he can hit Wein's flank before Wein himself can outflank their forces. But will thinking two or three steps ahead be sufficient? This novel privileges the strategy and tactics that make Wein the exceptionally arrogant and exceptionally capable ruler he is. He's often caught off guard, but he readily adapts. He accepts that others know and fear him, but he manipulates them because of it. He's careful with his language and compassionate with his rhetoric, but unyielding with his intentions. Wein doesn't care who becomes the next emperor of the Earthworld Empire. He's fighting for Natra. He's fighting for himself. But if he loses? Well, then everyone should anticipate that it won't be a single army, or a random holy site, that will burn to the ground. Everyone, indeed, absolutely everyone, will succumb to the flames of his sympathy.

The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt (Hey, How About Treason?), Vol. 9
By Toru Taba and Falmaro. Released in Japan as “Tensai Ouji no Akaji Kokka Saisei Jutsu ~Sou da, Baikoku Shiyou~” by GA Bunko. Released in North America by Yen On. Translated by Jessica Lange.
As we’ve now gone through about nine volumes of this series, it’s good to remember that the initial premise was that Wein was trying various ways to abdicate his responsibilities, and failing for the most part because a) he’s too good at his job, and b) he won’t do it if it means the people of Natra suffer. For the last few books, that’s mostly been forgotten, to the point where the title almost seems archaic. But this book reminds us that yes, Wein really does not want to be running his country, and he is still trying to take steps to avoid being the ruler. Fortunately for Wein, he has an adorable little sister with even more charisma than he has who sucks up knowledge like a sponge. The most interesting scenes in the book are when he asks Falanya is he really is “good” to the Flahm, and if so, how? Getting her to stop hero-worshipping him is a good first step.
Wein and Ninym are on their way to Ulbeth, a nation divided into four regions: Muldu, Altie, Roynock, and Facrita. In theory they all are distinct areas with their own distinct rulers but united as an alliance. In practice, they all hate each other. Wein has been invited by Muldu’s representative, Agata, a Holy Elite who wants Wein’s help to undermine the other nations. Of course, Wein is not about to do this out of the goodness of its heart, but (as with most books in the series) complications suddenly turn up. Who’s going to win this mini-throne war? Can everything be solved by simply marrying as many couples as possible? And, most importantly, if something happens to Ninym, has Wein matured enough as a person not to simply kill every single person in the nation?
Slavery, as a concept, is so prevalent in light novels that it has become one of the worst cliches, and Genius Prince has been no exception. The Flahm have been presented in the story to date as an oppressed and hated group, and even in Natra, which supports them to an extent, Wein and Ninym have to merely be content to be ruler and aide and nothing more. The backstory of the Flahm has been teased in previous books, but here we get (secondhand) most of the story. I’ll be honest, it’s handled a bit better than other stories of its ilk, but still makes me a bit uncomfortable. On the up side, spoiling the previous paragraph a bit, we’re now seeing Wein be big enough to have someone kidnap Ninym and NOT destroy them completely. Alas, poor Ninym for once is the damsel in distress – her pulling a Wein and bewailing it at the end is hilarious.
I have a sneaking suspicion this series will end with Falanya on the throne and Wein and Ninym running off somewhere together, but we’re not there yet. Till then, this is a solid volume.

Book Review: ‘The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt’ #8
Tumblr media
The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt (Hey, How About Treason?), Vol. 8 by Toru Toba My rating: 4 of 5 stars If not for the madness seeking to bury him under the weight of a continent in perpetual conflict, Crown Prince Wein Salema Arbalest could be mistaken for being as great a fool as he is a virtuoso. But readers already know this. What readers don't yet know, or have yet to sum the evidence for, is just how wildly conniving, brazenly injudicious, and insecure all the other leaders on the Varno continent happen to be. And by extension, it takes the precarity of a world on fire to enlighten these denizens of political turbulence to Prince Wein's genius (or cowardice, sometimes it's hard to tell). In GENIUS PRINCE . . . v8, one finds that not all debts are of the salable type, not all debts can be readily counted or esteemed, and not all debts are as sensitive to the risk of payout as one presumes. Prince Wein is summoned to yet another Gathering of the Chosen, this time deep in the western continent and far from known allies. The nefarious Lady Caldmellia helms a round-table discussion of heads of state in a bid to pull more land under the aegis of Levetia. Wein's aim? Get out alive. Also? Stall, stall, stall. The longer he can drag out this meeting of arrogant kings and feckless dukes and pessimistic royal princes, the less urgent the perceived threat of his rising Kingdom of Natra. At the fore, Wein is in a bind. The whole reason the young man was invited to the Gathering of the Chosen was to ferret out his indecision as to which half of the continent his tiny northern kingdom owes allegiance. For Lady Caldmellia, Director of Levetia's Gospel Bureau and keen provocateur, pinning down Natra and forcing Wein to heel would be a huge win. Good thing there are other matters that require the table's focus (e.g., voting on whether to accept the new King of Cavarin as a new Holy Elite). Good thing Wein has secured one or two allies ahead of time (unless, of course, someone sees fit to betray him). Good thing there's always somebody, somewhere, eager to mobilize a miliary spectacle (warfare becomes predictable when one's intentions are base). The twisting and turning political theater that makes this series so delightful simmers beneath the surface for nearly the entirety of the novel. Readers will feel a bit disappointed, if not downright anxious, to see Wein hemmed in on all sides by the ruthless egoists of the west. Is Holy King Silverio really a doddering old man? Or do his milky eyes and bony fingers hide a darkness even Caldmellia obeys without a word? And what about the aggressively friendly second prince of Valencia? Prince Tigris is terribly ambitious, for himself and for his kingdom, and he openly beseeches Wein in a friendly scheme of sorts. What could possibly go wrong? GENIUS PRINCE . . . v8 amps up the pressure until Wein's number of ways out are miniscule. Truthfully, it isn't until page 135 of the passingly short, 166-page novel that readers' spines will shiver in stupefied awe at the ridiculous tactical moves Wein employs to turn the tables on his numerous foes. For much of the novel, one postulates how Prince Wein might wiggle free of the elites' affront. And as for the obvious solution, one presumes the risk is too ridiculous to be of any possible use. That is to say, Wein would never make such a gamble. Until he does, of course. In GENIUS PRINCE . . . v8, narrative development is exquisite. It's certainly not for everyone. This style of storytelling, of wading well over 80% into the novel to jar oppositional characters into action, requires an almost feral dedication only to characters' authenticity. The other kings and dukes and princes at the Gathering of the Chosen have plans to absorb the affluence of Mealtars, to slaughter the royal family of the Earthworld Empire, and to bring about violence across the Varno continent. But before any of them can take a single step forward in their maddening plots, they have to outsmart Wein; a task of which none seem capable. Other fascinating notes in this volume include a heavy bit of foreshadowing about the fate of Ninym Ralei in the future of the Kingdom of Natra, and an insightful exchange between Gruyere, the King of Soljest, and his daughter, Princess Tolcheila. To the first point, the author's constant hinting and suggesting that Wein's affection for the Flahm woman runs deeper than professional compassion takes an abrupt turn when Flahm elders whisper Ninym's name in the same breath as that of a national hero, whom a generation ago, made a deal to save his people. To the second point, Tolcheila struggles to find her place against a maturing Falanya and an unrepentant Wein. The girl is getting desperate, for attention as well as authority. The question remains: How far will Princess Tolcheila go to get what she wants?
