Weigela florida (var: “Red Prince”)
The Red Prince
Weigela florida is native to northern China, Korea and Japan. It was ‘discovered’ by Robert Fortune and brought back to European gardens in 1845. This lovely specimen is the famous Weigela cultivar “Red Prince” growing in my neighbor Pam’s garden. It’s funnel-shaped, rose pink flowers are particularly attractive to hummingbirds including our beloved resident hummingbird, Arnie.
Unfortunately Pam’s house just sold and the bulldozer will arrive next summer. Mrs. Flowerishness has suggested that the day that Pam moves out, I go and ‘rescue’ the “Red Prince” with a shovel. Normally I would call this theft but under these circumstances maybe it’s OK. The new owners will certainly clear the property lot line-to-lot line, I have a suitable spot in our front garden, and besides, the “Red Prince” is one of Arnie’s favorite flowers.
