Whenever I think of Steven Universe I think a theme it explored often, and explored well, was that sometimes the people close to you do things that really hurt you. Sometimes out of weakness, anger, ignorance, or even out of good intentions. And that sucks! And maybe the best exploration of the theme is the Steven Bomb, Week of Sardonyx. Anyone who happens to read this will know it, so no need for a recap (but there will be pretty screenshots. don't worry).
Now this whole "people you love hurt you" thing on the surface permeates basically all fiction. Otherwise there'd be no conflict, right? But what separates SU is that often their actions aren't justified or noble. Garnet is right, what Pearl does is terrible, it's at best a time waster! But that's what makes it such a good arc and exploration of the characters! Because in real life people are just like that. They DO do things that are horrible, even if they really love you. It's such a human and grounded concept executed very well using fantastical elements (like any good fiction).
The Week of Sardonyx stands tall above even other episodes/arcs of the show because the fact that it was a bomb (not like a financial bomb). They didn't have to wrap it up in a neat 11 minute bow, they could stretch it out and reeeeally make you feel the consequences. You really get some juicy insight into the cast; how they feel, how they interact with each other, etc. It was a big shake up for the time too, there had never been such a falling out (even temporary) between the core Crystal Gems. Hey, isn't it interesting how both "gems fuse with Garnet" episodes explore dark sides of Fusion?
Alright, I'm gonna throw some shade at the SU fandom real quick, so I may step on some toes. But when these, and many other episodes, were coming out there were people who reacted very vitriolically. Is Pearl the worst now? Is she evil?? Are these episodes terrible because they ruined Pearl? And the answer is no you idiot! People who are "the good guys" can do bad things! That's what makes them complex! That's what makes them interesting! But does it make them bad people? Definitely not. Come on guys. have a BIT of media literacy (like me, the smartest guy in the world of course).
Now while the Week of Sardonyx is, at least at that point in the series, the best execution of this theme, there are some episodes I should give credit to as well. Island Adventure is the very first, and it doesn't even feature the gems! Sadie trapping them on an island to try help Lars is just great, very emotionally muddy episode. Maximum Capacity is the first one where anger is a theme, with Amethyst intentionally trying to upset Greg. And again, not cool, not justified, and that's what's so good about it! And lastly one of my favorites, Rose's Scabbard, because of the simple scene of Pearl not helping Steven up. Not very safe, excellently showing how upset and entrenched in grief Pearl is in this scene.

Update: The babies have been peeled (Except the 05 because I’m too scared for now)
Meadow (the Lime Green baby) and Sardonyx (the 05) do work, but Sardonyx’s battery compartment plastic is breaking in pieces so I need to come up with some way holding her together later.
Kaleid (the Tie Dye) and Sherbalt (the Sherbet) both have some corrosion so I’m not going to test them until I cleaned most of the battery acid off.
All of these will… probably happen in two weeks’ time, as I’m traveling very soon. But stay tuned for formal intros!

Here is the finished artwork featuring the second little dragon I colored a few weeks ago. Now with added bibbles! This piece is called Champion Flammae.
The dragon is Prismacolor pencil over watercolor, with gel pen detailing. It has a ball-chain with an ammolite doublet in its hands.
In the lower-layer background, there is all kinds of stuff: Upper left corner has metal ornaments, Swarovski crystals, and glitter paper. Along the right edge are sardonyx beads (probably color-treated) and metal embellishments. The lower left has a papercut shape that I painted, and there are tiny Swarovski crystals. The lower left corner and part of the bottom edge has a fuze-glass bauble, red coral square cabochons, and acrylic shiny bits.

2024 Grimoire Challenge Review - January Week 3
Before engaging in these journaling prompts, it did not fucking occur to me how many different elemental systems I'm engaged in. Jesus fucking Christ, there are so many. The four Grecian elements, the eight schools of magic from Dungeons and Dragons, the eight magic/magic-adjacent skills from The Elder Scrolls (at least, from Oblivion and Skyrim), the eleven elemental Flights from Flight Rising, the five colors + Colorless from Magic: The Gathering, the eighteen Pokemon types...
I also had to change when I was doing what, because I ended up working two 8 hour days this week instead of my normal one 8 hour day. So my plant study (lime, as in the edible fruit, not linden) and stone study (sardonyx, as in onyx but spicy) were pushed back to Thursday, since that was a day I wasn't working.
The good news is, my job is that I work in a library, so I have plenty of time to just fuck around at work, which led to an almost frantic research spiral into the dwarf planets in our solar system for Wednesday's celestial bodies journaling prompt. I, for one, welcome our planetary spirit overlords.
I also had to put off natural energies and divine energies today, because occultism burnout was a bitch this week and my brain was focused on pumping out fanfics for a soulmate AU for a Lego theme that died in 2015 (Legends of Chima, for those interested you can find links to those fics on my main blog @jasper-the-menace). The great part is, I was able to utilize the nonfiction books in the library I work at to look into natural energy, because I worked this morning. It was fun and no one bothered me basically all day.
I wound up having more to say about some of these than I thought I would, which I suppose is part of the point of a challenge. I, personally, look forward to next week's prompts to see how January (and then January into February) finishes up.

Fusion Therapy Chapter Two: A Phone Call
Chapter One ^
Peridot laid on the couch in Steven’s room, arms around her knees. There was an empty bowl of ice cream in front of her and a mess of ice cream around her mouth. The cushion below her face was wet. Steven and Amethyst sat on either side of her.
“What about Funland?” Amethyst suggested.
“No, no way,” Steven said.
“Farming?”
“Even worse.”
Peridot whimpered.
“What about building a huge robot?”
“Maybe.”
“No!”
Amethyst sighed.
“I think you just have to wait this out, buddy.”
Peridot whimpered again.
Steven sighed.
“I wish Garnet was here.”
“Dude. We can’t just futurevision this problem away!”
“You’re right,” Steven said with defeat.
“Steven?” Peridot piped up.
“What is it?! What do you need?!”
“Do you have any blue ice cream?”
“No, we don’t have any blue ice cream.”
“Clod.”
“But I can get you some non-blue ice cream.”
She considered it.
“That will suffice.”
Steven took her ice cream bowl and walked to the kitchen.
“It’s been two weeks, and still no sign of Lapis,” Steven said to himself as he scooped Peridot the last of the ice cream. “Peridot’s not showing any signs of recovery. I don’t know what to do.”
Steven brought the ice cream to Peridot, and she scarfed it down.
“Why isn’t this making me feel better?!” Peridot exclaimed.
“Peridot, the only thing that’s gonna do that is time.”
Peridot wailed and cried.
“Yo, Steven. Can I talk to you outside?”
“Of course, Amethyst.”
Steven and Amethyst got up and walked to the door.
“Hang in there, Peri,” Amethyst said.
“What did you want to talk about, Amethyst?” Steven asked once they were outside.
“Yo, man, we’re getting nowhere.”
“I know.”
“What do we do?!”
“I don’t know.”
There was a long pause.
“Do you think Smoky Quartz could help?” Steven suggested.
“No, probably not.”
“Garnet? Pearl? Sardonyx?”
“No! The only gem who can help Peridot is Peridot!”
Steven’s phone rang. He looked at it.
“It’s my dad.”
Steven answered the phone.
“Hey dad.”
“Hey Shtewball! I got someone here who wants to talk to you.”
“Um. Okay.”
Steven waited.
“What is it?” Amethyst asked.
“I dunno.”
Steven waited.
“Hey Steven,” Lapis Lazuli said on the other end.
“Lapis?!” Steven exclaimed.
“Lapis?!” Amethyst exclaimed.
“Lapis?!” Peridot exclaimed.
Peridot scrambled outside.
“Gimme the phone!”
She tried to take the phone.
“Hey Lapis, where are you?”
“I’m at the car wash.”
Steven was dancing around Peridot as she tried to take the phone from him.
“Do you want us to come to you?” Steven asked.
“Who’s we?”
“Gimme the phone Steven!”
“Me, Peridot, and Amethyst.”
Lapis Lazuli sighed.
“Okay.”
The three of them made their way to the car wash. Lapis Lazuli was washing a car using her powers.
“You’re doing great Lapis!” Greg said.
“Lapis!” Steven shouted.
“Steven!”
Lapis Lazuli stopped what she was doing. The two of them hugged.
“I’m so glad you’re okay,” he said.
Lapis Lazuli turned to Peridot. She was already crying.
“C’mere.”
They hugged. Peridot was sobbing and crying.
“I missed you so much!”
“I missed you too.”
They kept hugging. Their gems started glowing. Lapis Lazuli pushed Peridot away.
“Listen. I’m sorry. For leaving.”
Peridot sniffled and whimpered.
“Ever since I was Malachite I’ve been so scared of fusing.”
“I know.”
Lapis Lazuli gasped.
“Even though it was only a few seconds, I experienced what it’s like to be you. You’ve suffered so much.”
“Yeah.”
“And I wanna help!”
“What?”
“After my ship crashed and before the Crystal Gems captured me, I was all alone! I had nothing! No one! And I know it’s nothing compared to what you’ve gone through, but you’re not the only one that’s felt trapped, the only one that’s felt alone! Lapis Lazuli, these past months with you have been the happiest of my life. You’re the greatest friend anyone could’ve asked for. And maybe… we could be a little more… than friends.”
Lapis Lazuli blushed.
“Peridot.”
“I know you’re hurting. I know there have been some real clods who didn’t treat you the way you deserve to be treated. But you don’t have to suffer alone anymore.”
Peridot tenderly put Lapis Lazuli’s hand in between both of hers.
“Thank you. The truth is, I don’t wanna be scared anymore. I don’t wanna keep running. I’m ready to move on. I’m ready to heal.”
“That’s what I’m here for.”
“I’d rather not do this here.”
“Of course.”

1, 20, 24 for the ask game :)
1. coffee mugs, teacups, wine glasses, water bottles, or soda cans?
of these, coffee mugs. i spent my first couple of weeks of uni drinking out of mugs which, if you've never drunk booze out of a mug, is a total headfuck. i think my actual answer is Travel Flask though, but i have always wanted one of those glasses shaped like a fizzy drink can.
20. preferred place to write (i.e., in a note book, on your laptop, sketchpad, post-it notes, etc.)?
when i was doing my dissertation this spring i discovered the sheer joy of the dual Laptop/Little Notebook system: laptop for long form notes and notebook for spur of the moment realisations and spatial planning. at least 1/2 of the fun of this was that it gave me an excuse to carry around my little softcover notebook again that i bought when i moved up to uni but never really used. i've started writing recreationally a little bit in the last few months and this has largely been laptop (for long form Hater 'essays', see: Endgame for a Pretentious Geordie) though i am making more of an effort to take my notebook around with me now i've become a Tote Bag Enjoyer. this is her, she's lovely:
24. favourite crystal?
wow it's hard to google options for this without getting steven universe results. my answer is Amethyst, though! it's such a nice purple and i've always liked lavender as a plant, so it's nice to have a little gemstone companion for it. that said, i googled july birthstones/crystals and found out sardonyx exists, which has now taken second place just for the name alone.

I joined the Steven Universe fandom very late. I finally watched it in April of this year! By then, most of the fandom was dormant. But that didn’t stop me from absolutely falling in love with this show! Since I’d grown up in the miraculous ladybug fandom, good writing and likeable characters are mind blowing. Pearl and Garnet quickly became my favourites so when I saw Sardonyx for the first time I fell in love. She’s just so… gender??
I started making this cosplay about two months ago. Between school and band stuff it’s taken a while and I’m still not done but I’m taking her to Oz comic con Brisbane in two weeks!! If you see me don’t hesitate to say hi!

I think he is a so sweet and I love the bits we see about him. He definitely is a hero I like. ( Oh no worries. I stopped checking on the series for awhile since the manga isn’t doing so well in my opinion just very rushed and also my god so glad I didn’t watch the anime after season 5. The animation doesn’t look so hot.
That’s a loyal person if someone risks going a organization back.
Wow that actually very inspiring and so sweet. He cares more on joy for a Pokémon trainer than winning and that’s very humble of him especially being a gym master.

Sardonyx is from Steven universe and Olivia is from Fire Emblem awakening. I wasn't sure which one you meant so i did both to be sure lol.
I haven't seen any of it, honestly. If it's as rushed as you say it is, then I don't blame them in a way. They are trying to capitalize it while it's still popular. Not that I agree, mind you. I would rather wait for great work instead of getting something rushed.
In a way, I can relate to Axel/Lea, and I think that's a reason why I like him so much.
