the post you reblogged about Mendeley made me think: do you have any other tips for university students that everyone should know about? i’m about to start studying sociology soon so i need all the tips i can get!
first of all that’s exciting and i wish you all the best! i’ll try to mention the basics (i feel like you might know some of this stuff but it can’t hurt to mention)
first things first as you already saw DO NOT CITE MANUALLY i mean this this is the most important thing. Mendeley is my favorite app, it has a word plugin and can cite in whichever style you want. also while talking about mendeley - SORT the papers you have in folders and sub folders and write down little notes like why you downloaded the paper. you’ll thank yourself later
equally as important DO NOT PAY FOR PAPERS ever. no author gets any money from it, it all goes to the publishers who are loaded already (counterintuitively, it costs money to publish your work). 💖scihub💖 is your best friend NEVER pay for article access i can’t stress this enough. (no link for scihub as the domain changes every so often, just google it and the wiki page stays updated on which domain is currently working). also don’t buy books unless you really want the physical edition as most books can be found online
in searching for relevant literature i much prefer pubmed to google scholar (though that’s 100% a better option than just a google search, you get more relevant results in a much shorter time period)
if you’re writing a paper and need to find the papers cited in it/the papers that cite it connected papers is SO useful and saves so much time
if you want to see if the journal/author of the paper is relevant in the field use webofscience (you can only use it once you have a uni email address/password but it’s rly useful for info/stats on a lot of things)
when writing a paper grammarly is seriously so useful. even the free version helps a lot, but the paid version is great bc it offers plagiarism checks etc. word’s thesaurus is also great for finding synonyms etc but don’t trust word too much
also, just from personal experience, most of what you need from a paper is in the abstract and discussion. when i started uni i made the mistake of reading the entire thing and it just took so much unnecessary time and energy. unless you’re focusing on that individual paper you truly do not need to read more than that (and take a look at the figures from the results; and the introduction if you’re not familiar with the topic)

i like graduate school because a) i received a seven thousand volt shock today, b) my advisor thought it was terribly funny, and c) when i asked a senior colleague whether i needed to be worried, he advised me to do a calculation about it and check the calculation against the results of a journal article
broke: checking WebMD to see if you’re dying woke: checking WebOfScience to see if you’re dying

UGC Approved Journals?
Journal Not in UGC Approved Journals List India?
Do your journal is not in UGC Approved Journals List 2017 or 2018?
Did your journal remove from UGC Approved Journals List?
If you are interested to read this blog means you or your article which was published in a journal, not in U University Grants Commission. UGC is constantly working to make a funnel of worldwide journals. The main question is why your journal was removed or not listed on the UGC list? Actually, there is a list of points which need to be taken care of while for the selection of journal in UGC journals list. Few of them are already mentioned by the UGC on their website and same can check out in the above screenshot. The following was clearly describe by the UGC,   “The UGC-approved List of Journals includes Journals covered in i) Web of Science; ii) Scopus; iii) Journals recommended by the Standing Committee on Notification on Journal and Language Committee; and iv) Journal recommended by Universities; A note on scope, coverage, and methodology used for compiling UGC-approved List of Journals is available athttps://www.ugc.ac.in/journallist/methodology.pdf.”   The journal which is already approved by the web of science or Scopus will automatically include in the UGC list gradually. The journal which will be recommended by the standing committee on the notification on journal and language committee will be also be considered to take place in UGC journal list. The journal which was recommended by the universities will also accept for UGC journals list. What is the scope, coverage & methodology of UGC approved list? The journal has a website which provides full postal and email addresses of Chief Editor and Editors, and at least some of these addresses are verifiable official addresses The website provides complete instructions to authors/reviewers The journal has a well-defined peer-review and publication policy The journal has a well-defined Ethics policy The journal has a declared frequency of publication each year The journal is published regularly and in time following its declared frequency The journal claims that it is indexed in a given database and this claim is verified Journal levies submission/publication charges Since when is the journal being regularly published (select any one) The UGC committee is accepting an answer in YES or NO and +1 or -1 score which will be written as Final Score. First of all, you or your journal article Editor must check the above list and find out whether we are following this all or not. Actually, UGC is still not cover some international publication guideline rules & regulations which I hope soon they will plan for. Why my journal is not on the list? If you find that your journal is not following the any of the above points out of 9 then I think you get your answer. UGC has also updated there list where University Grants Commission (UGC) has removed 4305 journals after it received complaints about poor-quality on 'UGC approved list of journals'. We are going to publish a list of articles in future which will guide you how to get approval in UGC journals list or what to do to get increase chances to be listed in UGC journals list?. We will also post a list of articles which will be useful for the publisher to market and maintain their journals. Let’s discuss what you suggest for UGC Journals List. Comment and share here so that each of us can find a way for what to do if…? Read the full article
