This is an illegitimate and deeply corrupt Supreme Court

Today is a sad day in American constitutional law and in the lives of LGBT people. The Supreme Court of the United States declares that a particular kind of business, though open to the public, has a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class. The Court does so for the first time in its history. By issuing this new license to discriminate in a case brought by a company that seeks to deny same-sex couples the full and equal enjoyment of its services, the immediate, symbolic effect of the decision is to mark gays and lesbians for second-class status. In this way, the decision itself inflicts a kind of stigmatic harm, on top of any harm caused by denials of service. The opinion of the Court is, quite literally, a notice that reads: "Some services may be denied to same-sex couples."

Today, the Court, for the first time in its history, grants a business open to the public a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class. Specifically, the Court holds that the First Amendment exempts a website-design company from a state law that prohibits the company from denying wedding websites to same-sex couples if the company chooses to sell those websites to the public.

The Court also holds that the company has a right to post a notice that says, "No [wedding websites] will be sold if they will be used for gay marriages."

Our Constitution contains no right to refuse service to a disfavored group.

In 2022, America’s top five weapons contractors made $196 billion in military-related revenue, according to Defense News. Lockheed Martin dominated all other defense-focused companies, with total military revenue of roughly $63 billion last year. RTX, formerly known as Raytheon Technologies, was a distant second, earning roughly $40 billion in revenue in 2022. The same five American “prime” contractors have long dominated lists of the world’s biggest arms manufacturers. Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, RTX, Boeing and General Dynamics have remained in the top seven of the Defense News ranking since it began in 2000. x

Day 2: Poet/Warrior. The Wistful Creative 🖋️

An excerpt from the journal of Tamlin, filled with his poems-

-I spent countless hours walking my grounds, day in and day out, I saw the flowers and the trees, the bees and the sun.

And they all reflected my soul back to me. But now as I walk with you, your battle torn hand in my own, I find that the flowers have begun to sing and the tree’s roots dance beneath the soil, the sun seems to glitter in the sky and the bees produce more than twice their usual load of honey.

I taste the honey on your lips as we sit beneath the lilac tree, laughter echoing down the hills. How I love to be alive, how I love you, spring has always looked better at night.-

The other recent arrival is this finely detailed silver hilted French smallsword. The blade is marked:

Guyon L'aine au Roy De La Chine Sur Le Pont St Michel a Paris

Which translates to:

Guyon (The Elder) to The King of China St Michel Bridge Paris.

Guyon was a sword cutler from about 1750 to 1767. And the St Michel Bridge was a retail address in Paris. Given the way shops were identified at the time, and the lack of a king in China, it is most likely that “The King of China” was a shop name that Guyon worked from to sell his swords.

There are three stamps on one of the annelets that are likely to be hallmarks, but I am still trying to identify them so can’t confirm if the hilt is silver or not, but given the wear on the decorations I believe it to be likely.

(If anyone can identify them, please let me know)

The caduceus of Hermes (Roman - Mercury) features prominently in the decorations and this association with commerce could indicate that the sword belonged to a wealthy merchant (since the hilts were made to order from patterns). Unfortunately, we’ll never know, but it is fun to speculate.

Interestingly, even though it is 10 grams lighter than the smallsword with the boatshell guard. It’s more forward point of balance makes it feel slightly heavier in the hand.

Inside Grip Length: 82 mm

Weight: 420 grams

The Illinois legislature passed an assault weapons ban earlier this year. On Friday the Illinois Supreme Court upheld that ban.

The Illinois Supreme Court has rejected a challenge to the state’s ban on assault weapons, meaning that law will stay in effect statewide. In a 4-3 decision issued Friday morning, the high court overturned a lower court’s ruling, stating the ban is constitutional and does not “deny equal protection nor constitute special legislation.” Gov. J.B. Pritzker said he was “pleased” with the ruling Friday and called it a win for “advocates, survivors, and families alike because it preserves this nation-leading legislation to combat gun violence and save countless lives.” “This is a commonsense gun reform law to keep mass-killing machines off of our streets and out of our schools, malls, parks, and places of worship,” he said in a statement. “Illinoisans deserve to feel safe in every corner of our state—whether they are attending a Fourth of July Parade or heading to work—and that’s precisely what the Protect Illinois Communities Act accomplishes.”

The law is not retroactive and those who legally bought such guns before the law went into effect can keep them. The differentiation between existing ownership and new ownership was the basis for the suit which SCOIL ruled on.

“To the extent plaintiffs allege they already possess restricted items, plaintiffs may retain them but may not acquire more, which matches the restrictions placed on those who are grandfathered under the Act,” the court wrote in its ruling. “The statutes treat plaintiffs who already possess assault weapons and LCMs the same as the grandfathered individuals.”

There will probably be other attempts to overturn the Illinois law. The Illinois assault weapons ban may very well end up before the US Supreme Court. A SCOTUS ruling against the Illinois law in an election year could set off a firestorm similar to what happened after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision last year.

The assault weapons law would not have been possible without a Democratic trifecta in Illinois.

After decades of treating state government like a poor cousin, Democrats in many states have taken a renewed interest in that level of governance. Michigan Democrats gained a trifecta in Michigan for the first time in over 35 years with the 2022 elections and passed a remarkable series of reforms in 100 days.

I have been reading ACOTAR this summer in an attempt to give myself a brain break before 3L and because the books were left in my Airbnb so, ya know, free, and while I will admit my reactions have been mixed, I have many thoughts, have been entertained, and accomplished my general goal…

HOWEVER

I desperately need to know if anyone else here on Tumblr shares one particular thought with me.

Okay I’ll set the scene:

*Gigantic Worm Appears for Feyre to Fight.*

Aramatha: *evil cackling*

The Crowd: *gasp.*

Rhyse: “I can figure out how to profit here probably. That’s a valid way of showing wifey support when she doesn’t know she’s wifey yet right?”

Feyre: *Panics and takes action. Everything is incredibly dramatic.*

Me: *to myself* “massive worm, massive worm, what’s this make me think of….”

Anyway I’m like 3/4 through book two and am still entertained with this as a generally fun read by not taking any of it too seriously and avoiding anything resembling a ship war and now I’m considering if it’s at all possible to think up a crossover where the massive worm is Papa Lightworm.
