From teachers to health workers, more than 420,000 public sector employees are on strike today in Quebec. Primary and secondary school teachers will launch an unlimited general strike on Nov. 23 if the government don't settle with them.

It complicates my life a bit, especially with schools closed, but it is moving to see this wave of solidarity.

Do you know how much media has been produced in the last decade? This really was the era of overstimulation where you never really could watch all the stuff there was.

So when people complain that TV will be bad now, so? Go back and watch all the stuff that's just rotting on streaming platforms it's not like it's 2007 and linear TV is your only option.

But most importantly just support the strike so that the people who make all the stuff you like can keep making it :)

Stranger Things has a HUGE fandom. I think just one way we could come together and make an impact is by donating to the Entertainment Community Fund (they mention it specifically on the WGA Strike site).

Something fandoms do all the time is come together and manage to donate hundreds upon thousands of dollars, and bc there’s so many of them, each of them don’t even have to donate a lot.

News articles popping up that it’s been reported the fund received hundreds upon thousands of donations over a short time, likely as a result of ST fans coming together to do their part, feels like the least we can do right?…

Im trying to explore all options here.

Most of us live nowhere near the studios so protesting isn’t an option.

Spamming Netflix social media with our qualms seems like a lost cause bc they deal with fans hounding them every other day for canceling their favorite shows and don’t bat an eye, granted those fandoms obviously weren’t too big in the first place otherwise the shows probably wouldn’t have been canceled in the first place so that’s not saying a lot. Regardless, that also feels like a dead end, assuming our help starts and ends with us spamming Ted Sarandos’ instagram, that won’t go very far.

My point is, we don’t have that many options.

We can spread the word and hopefully those that do have the ability to do something more active in person will be inspired to.

We can do what we can online to be heard.

But it only goes so far.

I feel we are fortunate to have a HUGE fandom, so the prospects of focusing on spreading the word about the strike and encouraging fans to donate to that fund, is something that feels substantial, that would 100% make an impact in terms of it directly benefiting the writers.

I personally don’t have much money to give and I know that’s the case for a lot of people. But I could do it at least once and if we managed to pull together hundreds upon thousands of fans to do the same, that’s gotta be worth something?

i saw one (1) post about the wag/sag aftra strike (it was in support of) on instagram and the overwhelming majority of the comments were talking about how it's stupid and we don't need these writers or actors and it's actually way too expensive to give them what they want so i'm never fucking going back i'm staying the fuck on tumblr where y'all understand the IMPORTANCE OF WRITERS AND ACTORS

No offence, but ffs the general strike for Palestine thing being circulated for action this week is literally coming with caveats saying 'if you can't do anything else just don't post on social media about anything but Palestine'.....????????

#at some point it's not a strike any more when people are presenting it to you as not a strike.#look- i think a general strike supporting a ceasefire could make an impact but any kind of strike requires centralised support #e.g. if a community organiser in london who has been planning the large marches put out very clear instructions well in advance #contacted unions etc- maybe are large number of people in the country would actually do it- people here clearly care about Palestine #but literally all of this just ends up being about social media AGAIN.#did we not learn from the BLM black square saga???? social media and especially tumblr is not very useful!#btw the reason why strikes work best through workplaces if because you NEED close social support in order to do them effectively #internet support just isn't the same and it's no wonder so many people are openly saying 'I can't'#i wouldn't either! there would be no point! In this house, we support labor strikes!

The WGA going on a strike is equally as important as when other unions (Starbucks, Amazon and co) does. The only effective way to get big corps to talk to you is by hurting them, and oh boy, money and quality does hurt them

Maybe the quality of shows will get a hit, premieres will be delayed or even canceled. But I rather take that than writers, who make barely the minimum wage.

Is there anything I can do to help Palestinians besides call my representatives and beg them to stop killing people?

This is a great question. There are a few things you can do—just off the top of my head:

BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) https://bdsmovement.net/

Direct Action https://www.palestineaction.org/

Urge your University/School/Organization to put out a statement denouncing Israel

Organize a Protest/Participate in a local one

You might already be doing this but while calling your reps, tell them that as a voter, you're unwilling to support them in the upcoming election unless they urge the White House to take a stand against Israel and stop funding them

Share art/writing/films around Palestinian culture

If you're part of a union, ask them what they're doing to urge their industry leaders to take a stand against Israel + pressure the White House OR urge them to start a strike/walkout/etc if they're not doing anything already

Talk with your friends IRL about Palestine, whether in an activist capacity or watching a movie or literally anything

Reach out to a mosque to see if you can help them with anything

See if your city/state council has put out a statement in support of Gazans. If not, try to push them to do so.

Donate to Palestine Legal or Direct Action if you have some money to spare

KEEP TALKING ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know some of these don't feel like they have as big of an impact on helping Palestinians, but we do need to make an effort not to forget their humanity in the face of continued erasure and the media's sensationalist rhetoric.

Talking on social media and posting—while not seeming like a lot—does SO much. I know in USAmerica, it's like yelling into a void, but political analysts are saying that most of the "Global South" has completely lost any amount of goodwill it may have had the past few years. Hopefully, countries will start to put sanctions and embargoes en masse on the US and Israel soon.

Our goals here are BOTH short-term and long-term. We hope for the life and liberation of the Palestinian people, so anything that you can think of might help at some point in the future is encouraged to at least try.

I was on a plane this weekend, and I was chatting with the woman sitting next to me about an upcoming writer’s strike. “Do you really think you’re mistreated?” she asked me.

That’s not the issue at stake here. Let me tell you a little something about “minirooms.”

Minirooms are a way of television writing that is becoming more common. Basically, the studio will hire a small group of writers, 3-6 or so, and employ them for just a few weeks. In those few weeks (six weeks seem to be common), they have to hurriedly figure out as much about the show as they can -- characters, plots, outlines for episodes. Then at the end of the six weeks, all the writers are fired except for the showrunner, who has to write the entire series themselves based on the outlines.

This is not a widespread practice, but it has become more common over the past couple of years. Studios like it because instead of paying for a full room for the full length of the show, they just pay a handful of writers for a fraction of the show. It’s not a huge problem now, but the WGA only gets the chance to make rules every three years -- if we let this go for another three years and it becomes the norm? That would be DEVASTATING for the tv writing profession.

Do I feel like I’m mistreated? No. I LOVE my job! But in a world of minirooms, there is no place for someone like me -- a mid-level writer who makes a decent living working on someone else’s show (I’d like to be a showrunner someday, but for now I feel like I still have a lot to learn, and my husband and I are trying to start a family so I like not being support rather than the leader for now). In a miniroom, there are only two levels -- the handful of glorified idea people who are already scrambling to find their next show because you can’t make a decent living off of one six-week job (and since there are fewer people per room, there are fewer jobs overall, even at the six-week amount), and the overworked, stressed as fuck showrunner who is going to have to write the entire thing themselves. Besides being bad for me making a living, I also just think it’s plain bad for television as an art form -- what I like about TV is how adaptable it is, how a whole group of people come together to tell a story better than what any of them could do on their own. Plus the showrunner can’t do their best work under all of that pressure, episode after episode, back to back. Minirooms just...fucking suck.

The WGA is proposing two things to fix this -- a rule that writers have to be employed for the entire show, and a rule tying the number of writers in the room to the number of episodes you have per season. I don’t think it’s unreasonable. It’s the way shows have run since the advent of television. It’s only in the last couple of years that this has become a new thing. It’s exploitative. It squeezes out everyone except showrunners and people who have the financial means to work only a few months a year. It makes television worse. And that is the issue in this strike that means everything to me, and that is why I voted yes on the strike authorization vote.

Even as the strike ends, the Palestinian genocide has not.

Now more than ever, there are so many conflicting voices. People with their own self-serving, hateful motivations speak over us, and sometimes our own voices can turn against us. We may feel like our voice isn't enough or we aren't doing enough.

This is why it's so important to learn to shut down that noise. No matter how much people scream that what we're doing is useless or a waste of time, keep talking. Keep talking about Palestine. Putting all my thoughts under a read more just in case

I get not warning to be sad / thinking the end ruins the whole thing (trust me I’ve been in a fandom where the last episode of the last season ruined the whole thing for me) BUT ITS SO. Season 2 is so damn amazing and the only reason the ending hits so hard is BECAUSE of how good the season is. It makes you feel and it sets up for the pain to really punch and while I also no longer feel like a person that doesn’t take away from all the sweet and happier moments of the rest of the season. So I do recommend people watch it BUT sadly I know spoilers are going crazy. But even still mostly the end is being spoiled and the end is NOT all that happens and it’s NOT all that we get so even if the end has been spoiled. Watch the first five episodes at least because it’s so silly and fun and sweet and wild and literally feels like ten different fanfics glued together with magic and that only sounds like a good thing if you watch it haha
