It was far from the perfect kitchen. It often frustrated me with its less than ideal layout and sorely lacking counter space. The clock above the sink hadn’t worked for years (much to my mother’s constant chagrin). The windows were not exactly air tight, and the sink had stains that beat all chemical compounds.

But it was the heartbeat of the farm house. Sure, the paint was peeling, but only to reveal the colors of years gone by. The cabinets regularly got stuck and all the corners were chipped, but they were worn from the hundreds of family meals to which they bore witness. Oh, if these walls could talk! The late night chatters they could repeat, and the quiet morning coffees they could warm us with.

Perhaps irrationally, I feel deeply connected to those windows, those walls, those cabinets - they “went in after the war” as Grandma has always said. And while we’ve poured a lot of love into that house, I was not ever quite ready to renovate that kitchen. But, the polar vortex had other plans. A burst pipe in an upstairs bedroom rained down on my “maybe I’ll just touch up the paint” plans.

So, here we go. Like it or not, the farm house is getting a new kitchen! Stay tuned!
