here’s a post about writing tips from an excessively prolific fanfic writer

a question i’ve been asked is how do i manage to write so much in so little time, as for many people even putting down 500 words of a story can take a very long time

i don’t know if i’m the right person for giving writing tips but here are my answers to this (long post, sorry)

first there are two points that i should make clear:

1) i would not overestimate my productivity - if the plot is complex, i’m not that fast either. it took me a long time to put together ink and blood parts 1-3 which have a more complicated story. the other things i wrote were very simple in the plot or, like with the prequel, they followed the canon very closely so the plot was already done

2) even though it feels strange to say it, my real life job is professional writing. i don’t write fiction for my job, clearly, but even if it’s a different type of writing, the routine is always the same: elaborate a chunk of information, put it together in a way and order that makes sense, and sit there and write pages and pages under time pressure. this means that i’m used to produce coherent written pieces and to do it fast.

that said, i think my writing tips are the lamest ones i can give and you’ll hate me for this:

practice.

the fact that i’m fast at producing stuff is because as a consequence of my job i have been writing and doing this process of transforming information from my head to a page for years.

and even with that professional background, the quality of ink and blood 1 is not the same as that of ink and blood 3.

as you keep writing you can see how you dramatically improve from one piece to the next one, so just do it. you have an idea? write it down, even if it’s not for publishing it. i have a lot of old scraps of scenes i wrote down, some eventually made it into the published stories, some will stay there in the shadows of my files forever.

let that little seed grow on the page.

i think one point that blocks many people is that they feel like they don’t have a full plot with characters and worldbuilding in mind when they start writing.

but this is normal, it’s not like you wake up one morning and you have a full plot in your head that appeared overnight. for me, most of the things i wrote generated from one little seed, one little random scene that appeared once in my head while doing a random task and that had likely nothing to do with the big picture of the plot.

an example? ink and blood, a series of now like 9 fanfics and countless chapters, was generated by a random scene in chapter 4 of part 3 that i published last week.

if you have a random scene in your head, write it down. maybe it will stay a random scene and you’ll have practiced some writing, or maybe you will find yourself thinking how the characters ended up there and why, and what’s the background, what will they do next. and then one idea will pull another one and you may find yourself writing many chapters of a long project.

find a beta reader.

find someone who is willing to read your drafts.

agree on the boundaries of what “beta reading” means for you (spellcheck/language mistakes? just general impression of the story? more criticism on finding plot holes?). make clear from the beginning how much you are willing to give up of your original idea.

setting those boundaries is very important - years ago i had experiences with beta readers without agreeing on these things and i found myself hearing very harsh and frankly unnecessary feedback that just made me give up instead of trying to improve the piece. the original idea of ink and blood that i had many years ago was trashed down as painful to read and completely dismantled by the first two people who came in contact with it.

but finding someone who is even just there to talk about your story will help you improve and motivate you as well, if you set the boundaries right. and if you’re motivated, you’ll be faster as well.

read.

read as much as you can of the genre you want to write. this will help you both developing the language skills (especially if you don’t write in your first language) and developing a bit of critical thinking when it comes to character development, worldbuilding and plot, and on what you as a reader of that genre would like/not like to see on the page.

it’s not easy to have the headspace for reading someone else’s writing when you are in the zone of your own story, so you may have to do some hard stop breaks between one piece and the next one such that you can read something that is not yours. it can also help you recharge your brain a bit and unconsciously get new inspiration for your next piece.

The original Fic Writers Ask thread was super long, so like LycoRogue, I decided to create my own post for it, but please do check out the original thread.

1. How many works do you have on ao3?

I currently have 18, though I have more on FFN. 8 for Miraculous Ladybug, 5 for W.I.T.C.H, 4 for Hellsing, and 1 for Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji

2. What’s your ao3 word count?

As of this post, I have a total of 619,000 words. Wowzers...

3. What fandoms do you write for?

At the moment, I mainly write for Hellsing and Black Butler. But I have also written for Miraculous Ladybug, W.I.T.C.H, and Sonic the Hedgehog.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

1. Madness Within (Miraculous Ladybug) 2. Double Trouble (Hellsing) 3. Experimental Kiss (Miraculous Ladybug) 4. Destiny's Dance (Miraculous Ladybug) 5. Go and Conquer (Hellsing)

5. Do you reply to comments?

Sometimes. I always appreciate every single comment, but sometimes I don't always know how to reply without just giving a generic 'thank you' again, and again, and again. But I do read them all, I promise.

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Tough one. I think if I had to pick though, it would probably be Project Darkness, an old Sonic the Hedgehog fic of mine.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I don't think I've ever done a fic with a 100% cheesy happy ending, but the happiest and closest to that would probably be Twelve Days of Chatmas (Miraculous Ladybug).

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not usually, but I have gotten hate on Madness Within (Miraculous Ladybug), which I guess was always an increased possibility due to the amount of views that story has. However, that hate has only ever been on FFN. It was mainly people bullying me over long periods between updates.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Not usually, but you're more likely to see me write smut for Hellsing and Black Butler. There are some sexual scenes planned for the future in some of those fics for those fandoms. I can't see me ever doing a 'porn with no plot' fic, but it would be more like 'sexposition' and will make sense with the plot (e.g. advancing character relationships etc).

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one?

No, but I have thought about it on the odd occasion.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Oh yes, and it is so annoying! My work is usually stolen by people on Wattpad, and the most recent stolen work of mine was Destiny's Dance (Miraculous Ladybug).

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yeah, which is awesome! Amicus (Hellsing) has been translated into Spanish by ayelenrock, who is also planning on translating my other Hellsing fics into Spanish. I've had a few offers for my fics to be translated into French and Russian, however, those have yet to be published as far as I'm aware.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yeah, I co-wrote a few Sonic the Hedgehog fics with @free-in-the-wind and @jowyavilon at one point in the past. However, we didn't get very far with them and they ended up abandoned. Our lives were just too busy.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Alucard/Seras from Hellsing.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Probably Immortal Bonds (Miraculous Ladybug). I just seem to have lost all motivation for it, like with quite a few Miraculous fics of mine. It's a shame because I HATE leaving stories unfinished.

16. What are your writing strengths?

People tell me I'm good at writing realistic emotions, so I guess that would be one? A lot of people have complimented me on my accurate representation of mental illnesses. Also, apparently I'm also really good at writing realistic child characters, and they seem to always be a favourite of my readers.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Names. I'm terrible at them, and it takes me ages to settle on something. Also fight and action scenes can be quite difficult to write sometimes.

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language for a fic?

A rule I tend to use is try to imagine like it's real life. You'd probably understand, or at least discern, certain words in another language, so I tend to write those in. For example 'bonjour', or even simple sentences. However, if a character starts speaking full, long sentences in a foreign language, then I do not write this in, as it would probably just sound like gibberish from the point of view of the character I'm currently writing for. I simply point out that the other character is speaking in said language. I hope that made sense?

19. What’s the first fandom you wrote for?

W.I.T.C.H when I was, like, 10 years old or something? Back then, I didn't even know what fanfiction was, I just knew that I enjoyed writing my own stories based on the characters.

20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?

I think I definitely have a soft spot for Double Trouble (Hellsing). I love Lily and Luna so much and they're so much fun to write!

In fanfiction, I often see people pointing out that if only the Escanor siblings grew up together, there wouldn’t be a great conflict between them such as both in the comics and the series. Here is my AU for the series verse about Escanor siblings growing and ruling together as a result of Elyon's kidnapping being prevented (multiple times).

(Important note: Phobos doesn't kill Weira and Zayden; instead, it is Nerissa’s doing)

So, having prevented Elyon's kidnapping attempt by Aliborn and Miriadel after Weira and Zayden’s deaths, Phobos and Cedric would influence her whole world view by simply being there all the way throughout the future queen’s childhood. Despite Phobos initially hating and planning to get rid of his baby sister by any means possible, she would live along with him, saved by Cedric talking sense into the prince in the moment of his weakness right after their parents’ passing. Cedric's reasoning being that the Heart’s death would damage their world and set the vulnerable civilians and nobles against the prince would be enough to allow Elyon to live and grow to be a ruler… along with her brother. Raised with no clear role models aside from her older brother (with Weira and Zayden being hated by both Phobos and Cedric), Elyon would make a manipulative individual constantly passing as her brother’s nicer opposite (which, considering his snappish and sociopathic tendencies, would not be too hard at first) even wearing light colored dresses to his dark colored robes. Despite being favored by nobles and other metamoorians for both being a girl and a pretty naive-looking princess, Elyon would pronounce Phobos as King the day of her coronation as Queen.

In terms of this AU, I see the royal siblings’ dynamic as borderline codependent. After preventing kidnapping attempts, looking like assasination attempts in the times of civil war being caused by Weira’s murder, Phobos would eventually grow attached to his baby sister. Her only family, he would make a possessive kind of older brother, seeing Elyon as this creature he deeply cares about because she belongs to him and him only, a spit to his late mother’s face.

That being said, together the two form an absolute magical powerhouse with Phobos’ ambitions to conquer the universe and Elyon being the Heart of Meridian and, seemingly, a sweetheart, when in reality she is just as ambitious as her brother.

I’m contemplating whether or not Kandrakar’s Veil would be raised AFTER Elyon and Phobos’ coronation and their conquests of other worlds. An idea of Phobos conquering Kandrakar first has its fleur because that would grant him the Heart of Kandrakar and, in turn, not only make him powerful but also give the new King a pretty pair of wings. I like imagining the series Phobos with wings as well as his tattoos of horns, making him a little more… evolved.

Introverted and extremely knowledgeable of magical theory, idealist Phobos would be the strategist while more extroverted Elyon with her enormous magical power would make a tactician and a diplomat if that makes sense.

“You are smarter, my dear brother, but I'm more rational.”

(Btw they would totally use vocatives such as “my dear/sweet/kind (sarcastically) sister” and “my dear/wise/kind (equally sarcastically) brother” for each other)

Also, since Phobos would be the one selecting those allowed to interact with his sister, she would totally have Miranda for an advisor and best (aside from Phobos himself and Cedric) friend. Both cunning and witty, they would cause mayhem; in the castle (before Elyon becoming the queen) and on the battlefield (after).

As a side note, part of Phobos’ heritage to Elyon is being gay. In terms of this AU, Elyon/Miranda is just a tiny bit healthier than Phobos/Cedric.

Aesthetically speaking, a quarrel between the Escanor siblings would look like black and white roses, created by their magic around the two, trying to push down one another.

Oh, and the throne room with two thrones is divided into two sections: all gothic and black and all gothic and white. I'm not sure what their castle looks like yet.

Bonus:

“In our family, one has to at least appear emotionally available and the other is always Phobos.”

Also

“One has to be able to express their thoughts through words properly and the other is Phobos.”

(Phobos is bad with both words of encouragement and feelings so occasionally, during Elyon’s childhood, he makes flower crowns for her to show that he likes her)

And, lastly, an amazing comforting life hack Elyon learned very early: tell a distressed person to imagine a world clear of all irritating creatures and blinding sunlight and, instead, full of flowers of the best color ever. Black, that is. Also, the flowers have thorns and are dangerous. This is the ultimate xanadu lol

Like Water

The five (former) guardians of Kandrakar returned to Heatherfield and were ready to resume their daily lives. Everything is back to normal. Except it isn't. At least for Irma.

For the longest time, she was facing a battle. A battle that can be resolved within her. It is not easy to discover her sexuality. Well, no. The discovery was the easy part.

Dealing with it, facing it, and admitting it is the hardest. Especially when you have your fair share of internalized homophobia.

Irma was successful in this battle. But, just as she was getting the hang of it, she began catching feelings -- and for a friend!

She internally laughs at this cruel cosmic joke thrown at her. Of all the people she can fall in love with, why does it have to be Cornelia Hale?

Yep. Cornelia Hale, former Earth Guardian and the campus ice queen, beaming with elegance from head to toe. Cornelia Hale, with whom she always has a round of verbal sparring. Cornelia Hale, currently in a relationship with Taranee's older brother.

If this thing happened to another person, Irma would have been amused. Right now, she feels like water. Come to think of it, she feels more like her element now than when she was still the Water Guardian.

Like water. Calm, collected, and yet, full of struggles beneath the surface. A dangerous turmoil ready to spill, ready to destroy.

And Irma did spill. On their last day in Kandrakar, she bore her heart out. She told Cornelia how she felt. Cornelia, elegant as ever, received her emotions with grace.

However, the ambiguity of it all bothered Irma. Did Cornelia understand what she was trying to say? Was she as clear as an untouched river on a bright, summer day?

Like water, ready to destroy. And Irma was destroyed.

Upon coming back to Heatherfield, Cornelia quickly called Peter and asked to be picked up. She sounded happy. Irma can only look as Peter arrived and the couple shared a kiss.

She can almost hear her heart break. Irma managed to catch a glimpse of Hay Lin briefly looking at her with concern and, in the end, just gave an optimistic smile.

Irma smiled. The only thing to do now is move forward. Even rivers eventually become the sea.

Just two more weeks and they are graduating.

She will eventually move out of Heatherfield. She will emerge from her shell, welcoming her newfound confidence and maybe, just maybe, forget about Cornelia Hale.

"Have you heard? a new student have transferred here yesterday." Girl 1 said"What?! I thought we already had Taranee a few weeks ago?! "Girl 2 said" Apparently the headmaster thought it was a good idea to enroll another new student here."Girl 1 said"I swear that headmaster... "Girl 2 said" But what was the new student's name? "She asked" Wilhelmina Vandom."Girl 1 said" A boy?"Girl 2 said"No it's a girl."

Little did they know that their conversation was heard by Cornelia Hale.

'A new girl huh? I'm pretty sure she's like Taranee, afraid of everything.'The blonde haired girl thought'But the name why did she have a boy name?'She thought to herself'Maybe it just a coincidence.'She thought to herself.

The next day in "New School, New Friends"and lunch time

At lunch Cornelia was with her friends Irma, Taranee, Hay Lin and Elyon They were talking a lot of stuff but not Cornelia she's still thinking about the redhead that was in science class. But she shook her head.

'Why am I even interest in this girl? She's just a shy tomboy.'She thought, only for her to see the red haired girl Wilhelmina " Will" Vandom-Durano-Starlighter.

"Will!" The asian girl said waving her hand catching the redhead's attention. Will blinks before leaving, wanting to be on her own.

"Hay Lin, you scared her.. " Cornelia said looking at the direction where Will left "I get her"The blonde haired girl said getting up and left going after Will leaving the others alone

At the school court yard Cornelia was searching for the redhead girl 'Jesus, where is she?!'Cornelia thought frustratedly as she tried to search for Will. and finally she found her.

Cornelia walked towards her with a blank on her face. " Hello. "Cornelia said catching Will's attention "Um, hi? "Will said awkwardly" You must be the new girl right? I'm Cornelia Hale. "The blonde haired girl said" Will. Will Vandom. "The redhead said awkwardly while looking at her, Cornelia noticed it.

"Will, I have to apologize about Hay Lin, I know she scared you but I have to let you know that she have good intentions. " Cornelia said as she sat next to Will who is looking away. Before she could say anything the bell rangs. "Well, I guess we talk later, I introduce you to my friends later? " Cornelia said as she standing up "Yeah,I bye Cornelia. " Will said and before she left"Will wait!" Cornelia said catching Will's attention "Yeah? " Will said in confusion "I was in the same class as you, I could take you there if you wanted. " The blonde haired girl said taking Will's hand and her eyes widened a bit.

'Her hand.. it's so soft and warm- wait what am I thinking?! She's just a new girl jeez!'She thought to herself little did she know that Will heard it 'S-she thinks my hands are soft?! oh god' Will thought embarrassingly to herself.

After Music Class

"Will, you alright? " The blonde asked concern for the redhead"Yeah, I'm fine"Will said. "Will! " A familiar voice shout, Both Will and Cornelia perked up and saw Hay Lin running towards them with Irma, Taranee and Elyon.

"We we're wondering when did you two take so long? " Irma said panting while catching up to Hay Lin who was hugging Will.

"Will! I'm sorry for scaring you this morning! " Hay Lin said"It's fine, but can you stop hugging me for a second? "Will said quietly but Hay Lin heard it " Oh right." and let go of her. "I see that you met Cornelia" The asian girl said prefering to the blonde "This is Irma" Hay Lin said prefering to Irma"Hello! "Irma said " This is Taranee. "Hay Lin said prefering to Taranee, the blue haired girl waved shyly at the redhead "And This Elyon Brown."The asian girl prefering to the straw-blonde haired girl. " Hi."Elyon said to Will with a smile on her face.

Hay Lin hugged Will "We're gonna be best friends for a whole year right Will?! " Hay Lin said excitedly to Will who was flustered at Hay Lin's antics.

"Don't worry Will, Hay Lin can be like that sometimes. " Elyon said to Will, remembering what had happened to Taranee."It's fine..it's fine"Will said, not knowing the strange look she got from Cornelia.

Nothing Happens On Tuesdays

Summary: It has been ages since Nerissa has fallen in love, she can’t remember how long it has been, she has long since lost track and long since she’d stopped caring. It has been long enough that the very concept of love has become so foreign. But she remembers the feeling. Faintly but she remembers it.

It has been ages since Nerissa has fallen in love, she can’t remember how long it has been, she has long since lost track and long since she’d stopped caring. It has been long enough that the very concept of love has become so foreign. But she remembers the feeling. Faintly but she remembers it.

It is always in the back of her mind, a starved, neglected portion of her mind that haunts her now and then. But she always shoves it down, pushes it back into that deep corner of her mind where it can continue to shrivel and fade. She has no need for love anymore. She has no room for it in her plans.

And yet it always makes room for her. It waits for her, for moments of weakness.

She had caught her first glimpse of the woman on a Tuesday. Susuan is an unremarkable woman; nothing remarkable happens on Tuesdays. No remarkable people are met on Tuesdays. The people met on Tuesdays are the sort of people who go to generic chain coffee shops and pick up boring cappuccinos. As a guardian Nerissa had always taken her coffee with foam and a shot of chocolate. These days she takes it black just to drive some point home.

She doesn’t have a problem ordering a mocha again for the sake of asking Susan if she has ever tried putting chocolate in her coffee, just to add a little something. The woman’s face had lit up when she first asked and it still lights up every time they ‘happen to run into each other’ and Nerissa makes a suggestion.

“I can’t believe I never thought to try a mocha!” She remarks. She is way too excited over a cup of coffee.

Nerissa forces a smile. “You found something that you like and you’ve decided to stick with it. Nothing wrong with that.”

“I think that I need more adventure in my life.” She rests her cheek against her hand as she watches the rain fall through the window pane.

Oh she will get an adventure. The life part is where things will get a bit dicey.

“I quite enjoy adventure.” Nerissa replies. It wouldn’t have been a lie many, many years ago. She had, had hobbies. Many of them; playing the flute, writing postcards, sending letters…

Sometimes, when the hour gets late enough and she is still awake, she thinks about them. She remembers sitting cross-legged on the floor watching Cassidy laminate freshly written postcards with clear, glittery nail polish. She shares this memory with Susan who takes it in with a nostalgic smile, as though the memory is her own.

A long time ago, Nerissa would have been drawn to that. The kind of person who cherishes stories and memories just as much as the person sharing them does.

Cassidy was like that.

“Perhaps we can meet up sometime…on purpose.” Susan mentions. “I know a good bookshop.”

.oOo.

Susan is a means to an end.

A beautiful means to an end but a pawn no less.

She knows how much the woman means to Will.

And she knows just how to use that kind of bond to break a person. The Heart of Kandrakar would glow within her palms soon enough. It was supposed to have anyways.

It should have been easy.

It would have been.

Everything is lined up, all of the pieces are exactly in place with a few to spare for other plans should her initial attempt fail. She had accounted for many contingencies; for Will happening upon them and trying to warn the woman that her new date is an evil crone from another dimension, from any one of Will’s friends doing the same. For Susan realizing that these dates haven’t been what she had been hoping for. For Susan’s ex-husband to trapeze back in or another suitor to try to court the woman…

Oh yes, she has planned for many things. Considered it all.

All but one thing. Because what were the odds?

The bookshop is quieter than usual today, Susuan has made herself comfortable in Nerissa’s lap and has begun to read out loud. They don’t get to do this often with so many other people out and about.

Today is the day.

She has been telling herself that for weeks now.

But today for certain, she is going to accept Susan’s invitation to visit her home. She is going to wait for Will to make her appearance and she is going to offer the girl a little quid pro quo. The Heart for her mother’s life.

It is all just a waiting game now. She is remarkably patient and she doesn’t even have to wait that long.

Susan closes the book and touches her fingers to Nerissa’s cheek. Nerissa shudders. How long has it been since someone has touched her like that–so delicately. So kindly. And with such a warm smile.

“I do enjoy reading with you. There aren’t many people who enjoy Kate Chopin, I certainly can’t get my daughter to read her works.”

“Wuthering Heights is more on par with what I enjoy. Brontë has the most exquisite prose.” And a most respectable grasp on vengeance.

Susan nods. “I haven’t had the chance to read that one yet.”

“Perhaps that will be our next read.”

“The book store isn’t closed yet.”

“I recall that you wanted me to meet your daughter?”

“Right, yes! She is going to love you! At the very least, she will probably be relived to know that I am no longer interested in dating her teacher.”

Nerissa gives a soft snicker. What a charming little tidbit of information. Oh she is certain that Will will be begging Susan to marry that man when she sees her sitting at the dinner table.

Susan takes her hand. In just a few blocks the heart will be hers.

It should have been.

It would have been.

But Susan had tucked a few strands of Nerissa’s hair behind her ear and leaned in.

But Susan had put her hands on Nerissa’s hips and pressed a kiss to her forehead and then one to her lips.

She remembers what it is like to feel love. She remembers it very vividly now. Remembers that enveloping warmth. She has been so cold and so hollow for so long—how could she not be, sealed away on that secluded mountain with its frigid polar wind. She had been so thoroughly and completely frozen inside that, that breath of warmth takes her by surprise.

She takes a step back and Susan flinches. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed…”

Nerissa takes her by the hand, brushing her thumb against the back of it. Tonight is supposed to be the night…

Everything that she has planned for.

Her vengeance, her reclaimed power…

“It’s alright.” Nerissa replies softly. But it isn’t, not at all. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. She hadn’t realized that she was still capable of feeling anything but rage, a deep and festering hatred. “It’s just…” She trails off. “It has been a while.”

Susan nods, her eyes softening with sympathy. “I felt the same way after my husband left me.” She pauses. “Made me wonder if I could love again. I trusted him so much and he…he was doing all of these shady things, making all of these wild financial investments. It almost ruined me. It ruined us. And then he tried to take my Will from me.”

And she will do the same.

“I didn’t think that I would fall in love again. I didn’t want to give someone another chance to hurt me.” She pauses. “I don’t know what happened to you, but…” A sad smile. “Perhaps we could help each other. I would like to love again. Would you?”

Would she?

If she does, what would become of her?

What would she be?

What is she without her resentment and her anger?

She will dissipate into nothingness.

She certainly won’t be herself.

And yet, she wasn’t always this way.

She swallows. “Perhaps I would.” She hadn’t meant to murmur as much out loud and only realizes that she has because Susan’s eyes are absolutely sparkling. And she hates that those sparkles make her stomach flutter.

Susan takes her hand and squeezes it. “Are you ready to meet Will?”

Nerissa clears her throat. “I would actually like to read Wuthering Heights with you, if that’s alright.”

Susan nods. “Perfectly.”
