*Minor Spoilers* I've had this fic bookmarked for months, I love this author and all the stories of theirs I've read. But my ADHD often has me piling on more without diving into what I already have saved. So, when I was about to begin the author's latest fic, I paused. I realized I needed to prioritize this story first, and appreciate it fully. And now, I want you to do the same!
This is a pre season 2 "through the ages" story, visiting some of the historical settings we're familiar with and adding new ones as well. We watch as the weight of the world hangs on Aziraphale and Crowley’s shoulders. The impossibility of alleviating human suffering, the pain of being abandoned by their Creator, their Mother, and the lingering desperation for her approval. So when they've burnt out, they turn to each other. They comfort each other with warm intimacy through baths, manicures, brushing each other's hair, each taking care of the other and showing us how holy love can be. It's gorgeous and heartbreaking all at once. Their love is so true, even if they have trouble believing they're worthy of being loved and desired. “It’s because love can’t be earned, sweetheart. It’s given.”
The beauty of fanfic is that it can exceed the canon. This is not just in character; to me it's more in character than the canon itself. The book and show are comedies; they don't have time to dive this deeply into their characters' motivations and histories. And, of course, that's not a bad thing, especially since it brought us all here. But when I read something like this, something that brings a real depth and understanding to the characters, I'm amazed. This isn’t the only fic I’ve felt this way about, but it’s a prime example of that feeling. It’s just that, when I read a story that specifically focuses on their entire 6,000 years together and all the history they’ve gone through, I get frustrated that those moments are played for laughs in the book/show. The Flood, the Crucifixion, the Spanish Inquisition all throw away lines that don’t stop to dive into the wealth of story that’s possible there. I get why it doesn’t linger, I do, but fic narratives are so much more interesting to me than what the canon alone can provide.
This is a deeply moving and powerful story. Full of musings on shame, desire, religious trauma, and the beauty of the world we live in. Life is a terrible and wonderful thing. While this is mostly safe for public, I really suggest making this an at home read. It's a bit heavier, something you want to be in the right headspace for, and it features very rich prose. Never dense or hard to follow, but very beautiful, and you'll want to give it your full attention. I realize I may have made this seem like full angst, but it’s not! There's some wonderful loving fluffy moments to be found as well. Be sure to check out the other works that belong in this series! They are devastatingly good as well. Pair with some fruit for the full effect!

Want an AMAZING Good Omens fanfic?
I cannot recommend Communicatio in Sacris by the astonishingly talented @voluptatiscausa highly enough. I’ve read it at least 4 times.
Catholic shame, guilt and homophobia expunged via beautiful poetry and achingly gentle sex.
It doesn’t hurt at all that the description of Aziraphale pretty much matches this version of Michael:

I've said it before, but I'm feeling it strongly today and it bears repeating...
All of you artists and authors who lovingly depict Aziraphale's body, with its rolls and curves and softness and strength? When you show Crowley not just accepting it but loving it with passion and reverence and care and worship? Like, it's not just Aziraphale's soul that's worthy of that kind of love, but his actual flesh, the part of him that interacts with the physical, sensual world around him? When you make your audience see that body as beautiful?
It makes me feel so many things. So, so many. Like, maybe my body is worthy of that, too. Like, maybe I deserve a lover who is as enraptured with my flesh as I am with theirs. Like, maybe I shouldn't accept less than that. And like, maybe if no one else can love me that way, I can and I should.

*Minor Spoilers* This is a story that I read way before I started this blog up. Even though I knew what was coming, it still made my heart race with it's tender but oh so hungry sensuality like it was the first time. This story is beautiful. It starts with Aziraphale and Crowley reuniting after s2, we don't spend any time speculating on what happened and why they're safe now, they just are. I will again say that I love that about this fandom. I love skipping whatever s3 might be and just getting to their ever afters. But ever after doesn't come immediately. Aziraphale needs to earn back trust, show that he's in it for good and isn't going to leave again.
Those first chapters of them slowly allowing touch and intimacy are absolutely captivating to me. It's established early that Aziraphale can feel Crowley's love, but we find out that Crowley can feel Aziraphale's lust. Back and forth they go, letting each other drink up those emotions. It can be heartbreakingly loving one moment, and desperate desire the next. It feels like foreplay for them, but also for us. It doesn't let us take, we go at Crowley's pace. We get what we are given, and though we want more, we have to wait. By Chapter 3, you'll be as keyed up as they are. And finally we get to indulge. It's the kind of smut that almost makes you want to cry, it's not just sex, they worship each other.
Just excellent all around. Beautiful prose, and paced perfectly. Slow but sensual. At home, after dark (or morning in my case) read. And make sure that your door dasher doesn't show up in the middle of reading this. Trust me, that was such a tease and the worst timing to stop for cold hashbrowns.

Please note that fics are filtered by when it was updated, not originally published, so longer running fics will be sorted under when they were finished or last added to. Unrated fics are not included in the graph, an oversight on my part whilst collecting data, but make up a very small portion of total fics and are often podfics or artwork.
Tags excluded in tag rankings are: "Aziraphale loves Crowley", "Crowley loves Aziraphale", and "Ineffable Husbands", which were consistently ranked among the top tags and I found unhelpful for determining patterns in fan engagement since they are, after all, simply facts. Honorable mentions are tags that ranked within the top 10 tags for the month which were unique to the month or contributed to an interesting trend.
Data collection is all done by me, so slight errors in copying down information are possible. Yes I made teen purple instead of yellow, I found it aesthetically pleasing. So sue me.
January of 2024 was included because I thought the additional data provided interesting information, especially the return of the human au tag (officially "alternate universe-human"), the higher ratio of explicit to nonexplicit fics, and the debut of "anal sex" in the top ten tags. It was a great month for the fandom.
Current other data projects include average word-counts by month and estimation of the total number of words written by members of the fandom. If there's any data or patterns you'd like to see, or questions you'd like answered, drop them in my ask box!
