i, i am not over how Fate explains the family situation to little Vivio. Like. the show was trying, so hard not to be gay, while still having Fate and Nanoha... be Fate and Nanoha... aka, uh, life partners. sharing a bed. when no one else was. for. no necessary reason.
and. and then they, they, they invent a Whole New Way of being gay
Tumblr media
what does it MEAN when a women says "It's my job to watch over you and your mom". this is.
Fate's not their bodyguard? literally she is not. she's Nanoha's very ridiculously close friend, she's taking on the role of being Vivio's mama with Nanoha... I... her, her 'JOB' is to watch over them both??? she's, she's assigning herself that role?
she couldn't just say they're friends and leave it at that???
and Nanoha's sitting next to her on t h e i r B E D smiling and nodding along with this, she's calling Fate "Fate-mama" around Vivio, beaming when they snuggle each other like mother and child, and, im sorry, but
LIKE. they don't even have the excuse of LEGAL reasons- Nanoha's the guardian, but it's just a given? that Fate?? Will be Vivio's mother too????? BECAUSE SHE. LOOKS AFTER NANOHA. SHE. IS HERE TO SUPPORT NANOHA. SHE'S NANOHA'S.... WHAT???? PROTECTOR? she's just casually admitting part of her life revolves around Nanoha, and now Vivio, and
(and then of course she turns out to be the softy parent of the two)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i can't believe my head is still exploding over this almost twenty years later. Fate. what kind of lesbian move was that
"it's my job to watch over you and your mom" good gods help me

[I.D.: a gif from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid of Vivio’s transformation. Vivio steps backward twice on a dark blue starry background, in a glowing white and pastel rainbow silhouette. Rainbow feathers come out in bursts when she steps, and the bottom of her cape unfurls, before the silhouette style disappears and her clothes turn to their normal colors in an explosion of feathers. The next shot is of her upper body. Her coat is forming in the rainbow silhouette style, and flashes into its normal colors as she punches forward with a grin. / end I.D.]

Yumina Enclave
i was thinking about NanoFate which led me to thinking about Vivio naturally. You know she's marketed as a love interest for Einhart but like....if you read Vivid that's not the case at all. Like if anything Vivio's heading towards a love triangle with Rio and Corona when they get older. If anything what Vivio feels for Einhart is, "A senpai I respect and will surpass. Also a dear friend." Which is appropriate she 10 in Vivid.Meanwhile Einhart is over here dealing with memory encroachment from her past life/inheriting her ancestor's memories. When she's done with that she's proposing and later living together with Yumina and setting her as her lock screen. Let's not even talk about all the girls her age who she's managed to get crushing on her. I mean Einhart does look at Yumina like she's tasty even when she's dealing with the memory thing. I don't know, there's just something about Close-combatants and their supports that's inherently romantic.
All this to say: don't be fooled by the marketing. Sometimes what's actually going on is even gayer than shown.

Best Underrated Anime Group K Round 3: #K5 vs #K6
#K5: Adopted magical girl learns to love, live, and also fight
#K6: Slice of life in the middle of nowhere
Details and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#K5: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid
youtube
Summary:
Vivio Takamachi, a Sankt Kaiser royalty of ancient Belka, was previously subjected to mistreatment. Fortunately, she now lives a peaceful life with family and friends while practicing martial arts with her coach, Nove Nakajima. However, Vivio soon becomes the target of the mysterious fighter Heidi E. S. Ingvalt, who demands Nove to reveal the location of the ancient Belkan royals. Refusing to disclose this information, Nove finds herself in a losing battle, but Heidi soon falls unconscious. In addition, Nove discovers Heidi’s true identity to be a middle school student named Einhald Stratos.
When she regains consciousness, Einhald clarifies that she has no animosity toward ancient Belkan royals. Having inherited the passion to defend and harboring regretful memories of her ancestor, the ancient Belkan ruler Claus Ingvalt, she simply wants to prove that her fighting ability is strong enough to protect others. Intrigued by the girl's situation, Nove arranges for Einhald to meet with Vivio. Although they get off to an unconventional start, Vivio enthusiastically trains with Einhald, assisting her in finding peace of mind while developing a vivid friendship along the way.
Propaganda:
It’s such an interesting setting, like it’s so fucking weird and I love it despite the queerbaiting. But basically these two magical girls retire ro run a dojo and adopt another magical girl who was abused. It focuses on the abused kid (previous series focused on the two magical girls) and that kid learning to be a kid and fight not for survival but like fun, and making friends and having a family they trust. All while in a sci-fi magical world with some fascinating and enjoyable world building. It has flaws, but for me the setting and characters make up for the sometimes misogynistic additions.
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Gender Identity/Sexuality Discrimination

#K6: Non Non Biyori
youtube
Summary:
Hotaru Ichijou's lifestyle completely changes when she leaves Tokyo and moves with her family to the isolated Asahigaoka village. Her new school has only five students including herself, all sharing a single classroom regardless of grade level. There are no convenience stores in the area, and it can take up to two hours for a bus to arrive.
Nevertheless, Hotaru finds herself captivated by the countryside's charm thanks to her four unique schoolmates with whom she quickly forms a genuine bond. The most colorful of them is Renge Miyauchi, a first-grader who is often perceptive despite her age. However, no less intriguing are the three Koshigaya siblings: the quiet oldest brother Suguru, the petite older sister Komari, and the prankish youngest sister Natsumi.
Having someone from the city join their cheerful little group enlivens the ordinary days in Asahigaoka. Not only does Hotaru bring firsthand knowledge from the alluring outside world, but her fresh outlook on life welcomes a blossom of change to their usual routine.
Propaganda:
Non Non Biyori is a show that, at first glance, seems to be little more than a standard Iyashikei affair with above average background art and below average character writing. What the show lacks in surface-level complexity, however, it makes up for with its delivery of capital T Themes.
The first season serves as a foundation, where it creates a strong sense of place through gorgeously rendered background art. We’re frequently given long, wide-angle shots of the background as characters walk through going about their business. The characters, though simply written, are given strong interactions with each other in order to grant a better understanding of the sense of community within the town. This serves to establish the town itself as the single most important element of the show, allowing the themes to blossom come season two, where we can better see the underlying melancholy behind the show’s lighthearted tone.
Non Non Biyori is ultimately a show about good times that can never last. The town they live in and the lifestyle it represents is dying, and the kids will grow up someday and will probably leave in search of better opportunities, with the possibility that they will never return to their hometown. Even in the short term, the age gap between the characters means that high school and eventually college will separate them, and though they’ll likely remain friends things will have irreversibly changed. Though the threat of change looms over the narrative, importantly, it’s not something that’s ever lingered on for too long, and when it is, it’s delivered with a “less is more” mentality, where we’re given only enough information to infer how the characters are feeling ourselves without it needing to be explicitly stated. This approach delivers Non Non Biyori’s central message: that even though change is inevitable and all good things come to an end, the single best thing a person can do is enjoy the good while it lasts.
Trigger Warnings: None.

You can look at Nanoha's first reaction to Vivio being "we need to find this kid's real mom" / "but I'll look after her meanwhile" / "but we still need to find her ACTUAL mom"
compared to Fate's history with Caro and Erio of
"I'm not old enough to adopt them so my adopted mom will sign the paperwork until I can be their legal guardian" and Vvio "legally I'm just Nanoha's friend but I am also the 'fate-mama' to our newly adopted daughter" and then with former enemy Lutecia "so her mother is still out of commission and that means I'll be her guardian until things get better"
you could say, that's just Fate being kind softhearted Fate, and Nanoha being stubborn like usual, but the thing is, it tracks so well with both their experiences AS children WITH their families
Nanoha's childhood was lonely sure, but never because her birth family didn't love her or try their best to care for and support her. She values the way she was raised- repeats it with Vivio later on, giving her freedom and responsibility, focusing on teaching Vivio how to stand up on her own after getting hurt, letting her have the tools and chances to make dangerous mistakes and learn from them. Even (spoilers for Vivid) even when her kid has a completely messed up leg after fighting in a tournament for FUN, Nanoha says she's proud of her for that, for Vivio following through and putting in her all, and helping her new friends and competitors grow as people along the way
All of that Nanoha got from her parents and her family, the ones she was born into.
So when she first meets lost and abandoned Vivio, she thinks, where is this girl's family? It takes a while for Nanoha to sink into the idea of Vivio not being born into a family that cares or can care for her. It takes time for Nanoha to decide, actually, maybe SHE could be Vivio's family now. Maybe she already is
And Fate- it's easy to joke about her running around adopting every kid she sees- but a lot of people I know who WERE happily adopted later in life are like that too. It's not universal. Still for people who know what the difference can be and how GOOD it can be, some of them end up like Fate, they end up repeating what their own adopted family did (Lindy her mother, and Chrono her big brother, looking after Fate while she was still facing trial, asking her very gently if they could all be a family together) and when Fate sees other kids being abandoned or locked away she also repeats what her family taught her by immediately reaching out. She offers to be there for Erio and Caro and deals with figuring out HOW to do that afterwards, accepts making that her job to study up on and get advice about while already knowing that it can work. She's been living proof that a family that's made by choice can be wonderful- just as good or better than the one she lost before.
But she also knows how much a parent can hurt a child, even without whips involved. Fate is soft with her kids, worried about them and for them and how they feel about her, never wanting them to think for a moment that she doesn't care or would be okay with them being hurt, and it's a reaction to her birth mom Precia, sure- (her memories of how a kind mother could be be so cruel to a child she didn't love)-
it's also just as much a repeat of Lindy's gentleness with Fate, too. Lindy who signed that paperwork so her teenage daughter could split time between her new career and two different kids who needed her. Fate wanted to be there for children who had no one, and Lindy made it work.
So when Nanoha finally decides to try being Vivio's mom, even though she wasn't Vivio "real" mother- Fate is already settled into them all being a family. She's there and ready to make this work.
I just always really like the writing in that. How you start off with these nine year old magical girls, and when you check back in with them 10-15 years later, everything they lived through at age nine has shaped them into the people and parents they end up being together today.
It's very sweet. I love that for them, for all of them.
