I'm making an origami crown AND watching Mech Cadets while I'm making this—
What do you think of Macaque's fur being new-moon black in the summer, half-black and half-white in fall and full-on moon white in the winter?
Ooo, that sounds so cool!
Cus wild irl macaques do have seasonal coats that can look very different between winter/summer. From what I could find (science paywall is a bich), macaques really do have shorter, darker fur in summer compared to their longer, lighter winter fur.
Tumblr media
I'm just imagining Wukong encountering Macaque after a shed and being like; "Whoa! Mihou! Why do you have so many gray hairs?!", and Macaque having to tiredly explain that his fur has done this all his life. His fur likely didn't change much while living on the island cus of the lack of a "winter" on FFM.
Wukong probably has his own winter coat that looks barely different from his regular fur (ginger/brown) except for the level of poofiness, so the first time he sees Macaque with his snow-white winter coat it startles him. The idea of Mac's fur being like a moon-chart of the seasons is such a cool idea!
I hc that Macaque's fur while living on the Moon/in the Celestial Realm was moon-white, as it's cold af up there compared to earth, and that it darkened with age + through living on earth. Newly-appointed bimawen Wukong didn't recognise Mac for a solid week. XD
Another fun fact; pregnant and mama macaques don't shed. Need the extra fur for keeping baby(s) warm.
Macaque in the TMKATI au ends up having really long/thick fur with big streaks of white in his hair and tail that intensify in the winter months. Wukong will spend literal hours helping his moonlight groom his fur, no complaints.

2 Idiots At 2 AM
Thank you to RachelSnow on AO3 for beta reading this fic for me! I really appreciate it!
Relationship: Kazuma Kiryu & Akira Nishikiyama (NOT SHIP)
Warning: Underage Smoking, Smoking, a lil bit of angst, no spoilers for the games tho
Words: 2,044

--------
Everything felt hazy, and the first thing Kiryu realized was that someone was holding his hand. The second thing he realized was that the hand was guiding him forwards, and his legs went with it like it was the natural flow of things. He didn't know who it was, nor did he know where he was going, all he knew was that for some reason he was completely at peace with it. He felt lax, like he was floating atop calm waters. It lapped at his skin in tranquil waves.
When he finally raised his head up to meet the gaze of the person that was holding his hand, he realized that they had no features. Instead they were smudged, like the scribbles of a pencil streaked against paper. Even with the terrifying lack of a face, he proceeded like nothing was out of place. Though he could not properly get a look at her, for some reason naturally in his mind, he identified the person guiding him as his mother. Her hands were soft and warm. Her voice was gentle, though he couldn't process what she was saying.
They approached a building that looked very familiar to him. It almost looked like Sunflower, but the signs were gone and it looked empty. He mindlessly labeled it as 'home'. He felt like he had lived there for years with his mom, though he couldn't pinpoint any specific memories that proved it. In front of the building stood another person with the same smudged looking face as her. He identified him as father. He smiled as they stepped in front of him. He had no face, so there was no way he could actually smile, but Kiryu felt it. He felt him smile at them, all cordial and bright and sunny.
"Kazuma!" Kiryu heard someone shout, and in an instant that warm calm feeling shattered like sheets of ice against the pavement. He turned around and he saw Nishiki on the ground. He was crying, broken. Knees torn open in great gashes. He turned back towards his parents, wanting to ask for help, but they were gone. Dissipated like dust in the wind.
"Kazuma! Wake up!" He opened his eyes and found himself laying on the wooden floor of he and Nishiki's shared room. He pulled his pressure numb arm out from under him, which he had been using as a pillow, and blinked a few times as he regained consciousness. Nishiki was squatting above him, flicking his forehead. They both were in the doorway of their room, and Kiryu had no idea how either of them got there.
"Stop it!" He swatted the hand away from his face and pushed himself to sit up, "What happened?" He was still phased out of reality after that dream. Dreams about his parents always made him feel a bit disconnected once he woke up. Nishiki rolled his eyes.
"You fell asleep when I told you to be on the lookout for me, you dumbass." Nishiki flicked his head once more, and Kiryu groaned in disapproval.
"They didn't catch you though, so I did my job." Kiryu pointed out, "Did you get it?"
Nishiki rolled his eyes as if he was annoyed by his lack of confidence in him.
"Yeah, of course I did." He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a pack of hi-lights. He popped open the top to show off the fact that it still had a few cigs in it. Kiryu raised his eyebrows, impressed.
"Well give me one--" Kiryu impatiently grabbed at the package, and Nishiki immediately pulled back and held the cigarettes up and as far away as he could from him. Kiryu was taller, and could easily reach over him and grab them if he wanted to, but he didn't. He just sat there pouting.
"Are you stupid? We can't smoke in here! What about my sister, dumbass!" He went to knock Kiryu on his head, but he quickly blocked it with his arm and threw Nishiki off of him. "We gotta smoke outside."
Kiryu shivered at the idea. It had been freezing the past few days, and he doubted just because two rebellious teens wanted to smoke that the temperature would magically spike up. But, Nishiki was right. Yuko definitely wouldn't fare well if she inhaled a bunch of smoke in her sleep, and smoking inside the building was banned anyways. If they smoked in there he was sure everyone would recognize the smell and they'd be in big trouble. He sighed, and got up to grab his jacket.
Once he arrived back at the doorway, Nishiki was already tiptoeing his way down the hall. Kiryu quickly made his way to follow, closing the door behind him as quietly as he could manage. If someone woke up and saw their door wide open, they were sure to become suspicious. He cautiously avoided the especially squeaky floor boards as he walked down the corridor, passing by Yumi and Yuko's own room with a flinch. If either of them found out what they were sneaking out to do they'd probably kill him and Nishiki.
They finally entered the main area, and peered around the corner of the wall before they even attempted to get close to the front door. Scanning the darkened room, they saw no one occupying it. The usually full and bustling orphanage was disturbingly quiet during the night, many of the younger kids in a dead sleep after hours of play, the older ones confined in their rooms doing homework with only a flimsy book light to keep them company. He chased after Nishiki as he dashed towards the door, almost falling as his socks slid on the slick hardwood. Nishiki flipped the lock on the brass knob and it gave a click of approval, then he opened the door, as slowly as he possibly could to prevent any creaking.
Cool air rushed in and brushed past the both of them, causing a conjoined shiver. Kiryu tugged his jacket on tighter and regretted not putting anything over his tank top before deciding to do this. Eventually the door slid open to where the both of them could squeeze their body through, and then they spent a good couple minutes slowly closing it just in case. Outside, little flakes of snow had begun to fall from the dark gray sky. Under the cover of the night and winter, the white specks could be ash from a volcano and neither of them would notice a thing. Cool winds blew past, and the only things that illuminated their faces were the half moon in the sky, and the nearby porch light that lit up the wooden Sunflower sign.
Nishiki quickly made his way to hide over at the side of the building, thinking they were less likely to be caught if they weren't directly in the front. Once they were under cover, they squatted down against the siding and Nishiki pulled out the pack of cigs again. He opened it and pulled out two of the white sticks and handed one to Kiryu while keeping the other for himself. Kiryu eyed at the object for a second, quickly realizing that the side with the blue lines was the side you were meant to smoke from, judging by the white foam filter he could see. The other side was jammed packed with dried tobacco. He sniffed at the odd end and flinched at the offending smell.
"Shit, did you grab something to light it with?" Kiryu said when he finally realized that they had no way to actually smoke them. Nishiki waved him off. Kiryu noticed that he had already placed the cigarette between his lips, and he copied him.
"Yeah of course, I'm not stupid." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a suspiciously familiar lighter.
"Wait... that's-- Akira! Kazama-san’s already going to be pissed off when he finds that his smokes are missing, but you stole his lighter too?!" Nishiki shrugged, already flicking his thumb against the gear to try and light it.
"Everyone else lights his cigarettes for him, he won't notice." He finally got the thing to spark hard enough that it lit, and he quickly moved the flame over to the tip of his cigarette. Kiryu watched as the fire slowly caught on the paper, and smoke began to plume at the end. He then reached over and brought the lighter closer to Kiryu. He leaned forwards and aimed the tip at the flame. He went cross eyed trying to get a glimpse of it as it lit up.
Nishiki shoved the lighter back into his pocket and took his first smooth drag from his cig, so Kiryu tried to follow suit. When he huffed the smoke in, he immediately began to choke. The taste was downright offensive, and his throat and lungs burned furiously. After trying to stifle his cough, he looked back up and saw that Nishiki seemed totally unaffected and blew his puff out with no problem. He furrowed his brows.
"Have you done this before?" Kiryu asked, still gasping.
"What? No!" Nishiki held the cigarette between his index and middle finger and gestured with it with mock experience, "I'm just cooler than you Kazuma." He added smugly. He took another drag, and this time Kiryu took notice that he had to stifle a cough. He smirked, but didn't point it out.
They sat there for a while, quietly nursing their cigarettes, stifling coughs and chokes and accidently burning their nostrils as they let the smoke go through the wrong pipes. Their hearts pounded heavy in their chests and adrenaline pumped through their veins, knowing what they were doing was against so many rules and if they were caught they probably wouldn't be allowed outside of the orphanage for a week. But that was the appeal of it, wasn't it? The thrill.
As Kiryu kept smoking, a feeling of nausea fell over him. People always talked about how cigarettes were calming, and he thought that the more and more he inhaled the more relaxed he would get. Instead it was the opposite. He felt sick to his stomach and everything burned. He had no idea why adults smoked so often. All it seemed to do was hurt. He couldn't even finish his cigarette before he stubbed it out on the ground.
"What's wrong?" Nishiki asked, Kiryu looked up at him pale faced and big eyed.
"I feel sick, ototo-kun." He said honestly. He felt like he was going to throw up. Nishiki gave him a look of concern.
"You wanna go inside?" Kiryu quickly nodded. Nishiki stubbed his cigarette on the side of the building and left a petty burn mark against the siding, a reminder of what they did here, then grabbed Kiryu and led him by the arm back into the building. They tip-toed their way back to their room, and Kiryu curled up on his bed with the sickening taste of tobacco and nicotine sinking in his stomach. By the time morning came around, the sickness had passed and he felt much better, but they soon came to regret their decision later in the day when Kazama came to visit.
It turns out that he had, indeed, noticed the lighter Nishiki stole was missing, and he lined all the kids up and asked for whoever stole them to come clean. When no one stepped forward, he made his rounds and after only a few seconds he figured out it was he and Nishiki just by the smell of tobacco that still clung to their breath. He forced the two of them to fess up and apologize in front of the whole orphanage (Kiryu wouldn't have been so embarrassed about it if Yumi wasn't angrily eyeing him the entire time), then he sent them off to their room and grounded them for a couple of weeks. What Kiryu remembered the most was that he was less pissed off about the smoking, and more pissed off about Nishiki stealing, and getting away with it.
About a year later, when they both had turned fifteen, they tried the same thing all over again.
It went about as well as the first time.

In the meantime, enjoy one of the short, fluffy chapters.

See below for chapter 2, or find this story over on AO3, on FFN, or on DA.
CHAPTER 2:
The little pear tree sculpture was worse off than Marinette gave it credit, but it wasn't completely irreparable. She had taken stock of the damage the night before, and made a point of picking up the necessary supplies after school. Now it was time to get to work.
Too much of the foam base was chipped away when the card stock truck was ripped out of it, so she started off with replacing that. Then she carefully bent the trunk back so it was flat. The bad bend left a scarring crease in the base of the trunk, bit it actually looked good. Most trees had some sort of scarring in their bark. Using tracing paper to make a pattern, Marinette cut out two slightly smaller versions of Chat Noir's trunk from more card stock. Doubling up her own tree trunks, she glued them to the back of Chat Noir's to reinforce it. Finally, she made it 3D by adding a support branch of roots off the back. Resting the tree on her desk, it stood perfectly straight on it's own; no foam required.
Confident it was now sturdy enough for the weight of the filled in branches, Marinette got to work on fixing everything else. Using a decorative hole punch, she created a small confetti pile of green almond-shaped leaves out of construction paper. She then laid them out on parchment paper, and sprayed them down with adhesive before taking a deep breath.
“He's lucky I like him.” Through gritted teeth she started shaking the green glitter onto the sticky green leaves. She kept it as close to the project as she could, and she tried to stop once the leaves were properly coated without having too much excess. With any luck, she'd only find glitter for the next week or so.
As the leaves dried she got to work on reinforcing the partridge so its chubby little head wouldn't bend forward from the weight of the wooden beak and note.
The note. Forgetting what she was doing, Marinette gently pushed the clothespin open and released the torn note from the bird's grip. Folded over, the little note was barely larger than a postage stamp. Carefully opening it, Marinette was greeted by tiny but elegant writing; far fancier than she imagined Chat Noir's handwriting to be.
“Wishing the most amazing girl in the world the greatest of Christmases,” Marinette read the note aloud to Tikki. It was signed with a little heart drawn with red ink, and a paw print colored in with green ink. Giggling a little to herself, Marinette tore off two small strips of tape and patched up the tear running through the center of the message. She then tore off one more piece of tape. Flipping through to the next blank page of her diary, she taped the note to the bottom corner. A smile stretched across her face as she rested her palm against Chat Noir's tiny Christmas card.
After taking a beat, she closed up her diary and locked it away in its box. Rolling her shoulders, Marinette got back to work on firming up the partridge and touching up the coloring Chat Noir had done on the bird.
She let all the components dry while she had dinner, but instantly went back to work once she was done. First up was carefully gluing the leaves into place. Her new ones weren't nearly as drenched in glitter, and the shade of glitter was slightly lighter, but the two-toned leaves added a nice dimension to the piece.
She took a homework break while the leaves dried completely, then it was back to work to add on the pears and – she couldn't believe she followed through with it – the heart decorations. She managed to tuck the corners of the pears and hearts between some of the leaves to add more depth to the tree and make the fruit and ornaments look like they were actually nestled inside the tree branches.
As she waited for the tree to dry one last time so she could add the bird back onto its perch, Marinette started up a list; instantly and a bit frustratingly crossing off each item the moment she wrote it down.
She needed to come up with the perfect gift for Chat Noir. He seemed so hurt about his present, and he had put so much pressure on himself to get her the perfect thing that she couldn't fall short in doing the same. He was more precious to her than he realized, and this was her chance to make sure he knew that. She was stumped on what to do though.
Scarves, hats, mittens, shirts, vests, necklaces, earrings, pins; everything Marinette came up with wouldn't work. She was a fashion designer; her default gift for everyone was a piece of clothing or an accessory. None of it was a good idea. Her silly kitty would most likely be too excited about her gifting him something to remember to not wear it as a civilian. Then she could possibly run into him, and see him wearing the gift she made for Chat Noir, and then she'd know his identity, and-
She shook her head to try to get out of the spiral. Even if he was disciplined enough to not wear anything she gifted him while in his civilian form, it wasn't like he could really wear any of it while powered up either. Which meant, either he had to wear it alone in his house and nowhere else, or he'd never use it. That wouldn't work at all.
Blanket? Marinette tapped on the word, circling it a couple of times. That could be the best option for her. People rarely take blankets out of their rooms anyway, so he could use it without her seeing. Plus, it was always comforting to just curl up under a warm and semi-heavy blanket during chilly winter nights. Was it special enough for him, though? Would she have time to make him one? What design should she use for the blanket? Something not too obvious, in case he wanted to use the blanket in communal rooms in his home.
Looking out her window, Marinette knew she needed inspiration. It was time to go to her well.
“Tikki, spots on!”
Less than ten minutes later, Ladybug landed atop an apartment building just four blocks away from the Eiffel Tower. It wasn't the Trocadéro, but unfortunately the park was swarming with tourists this time of year, and she just needed some time to sit and think. It wasn't the same view that usually amazed her no matter how often she saw it, but the Seine still sparkled under the lights of Paris to her left, and the Eiffel Tower still spired before her on the other side of the river.
The sun was sinking below the horizon past the Eiffel Tower, and it cast a purple and deep magenta glow within the overcast sky. Curling up into a ball, Ladybug sat on the roof with her knees pressed against her chest and her chin resting between them. The lights running up the Eiffel Tower turned on in the twilight, and the whole of Paris joined suit. The yellows, blues, oranges, and Christmas reds and greens created a sea of lights below her. It was calming, welcoming, and inspiring.
Warmed by how serene her city looked, Ladybug uncurled. Dangling her legs over the ledge of the roof, she leaned back and admired the Eiffel Tower as it sliced through the cotton candy clouds.
The clouds are kind of blanketing the sky. Could I make something that looks like Paris on a winter's night for Chat Noir? She hummed softly as she pondered how she'd be able to execute something like that. She really fell into the zone as she meditated to the arrhythmic clicking of her swinging feet gently tapping against the side of the building. She could do a gradient fabric, and a quilted stitch so there were pockets of fill to mimic clouds. She could even purposefully avoid a symmetric square quilted look, instead pocketing the fill within a quilt of cloud shapes.
A duet of cooing pulled her attention from her designing. The flapping of wings grew louder, and two pigeons flew straight for her. She flinched and leaned slightly out of the way as they buzzed past her, close enough for her to notice their orange turtle-shell patterned wings and brown-gray bodies. Whatever they were, they weren't regular pigeons. A moment later, she registered that both birds had something gripped within their toes. One was carrying a trio of red roses. Its partner had a handmade card wrinkling slightly in its grip.
Homing pigeons? That didn't quite feel right to Ladybug either, but the duo seemed to be on a mission, so she mentally wished them save travels and hoped they found who they were looking for.
It seemed weird though. Even with Mr. Ramier in Paris, Ladybug didn't recall ever seeing anyone use homing pigeons before. She scanned the rooftops, trying to see who might have released the birds.
Nothing. There was no one on the rooftops nearby. No one on balconies. At first Ladybug was just curious as to who is using the skilled but archaic method of communication, especially with regards to sending what looked like a very romantic Christmas gift. However, after spying not a single soul in the area, it became an intriguing mystery she was itching to uncover.
She wandered her rooftop to try to get a better view, but there were still no clues anywhere. It was like the birds simply appeared. After a couple minutes, Ladybug decided that was a good enough explanation for her. They appeared from nowhere, and vanished to the horizon. They were an enigmatic package carrying a sweet gift for someone. A beautiful mystery of life not meant to be solved.
With a satisfied shrug, Ladybug headed back home, her head filled with fantasies of Adrien sending the pair of birds to her, and the card being a love letter. She giggled at the elation she'd feel if that were true, as well as the insanity of such a thing happening.
Imagine, Adrien Agreste sending Marinette Dupain-Cheng a pair of birds holding a Christmas gift and a declaration of love. A girl could dream.

Anjali Sayee April 29, 2019
Black and white. Blonde and brunette. These are powerful paired combinations.

What Is The Two-Tone Hair Color Trend?
Shutterstock
Two-tone hair color is exactly what it sounds like. You use two colors to give your hair vibrance and life. A few people have even gone creative with this two-tone idea by using multiple shades of the same tone to create a dimensional look. The most common trend is to opt for a peekaboo two-tone hairstyle, where one tone is hidden. But if you want to go all out, opt for a blunt contrast.
Read on to find out how you can dye your hair in two tones at home.
How To Dye Your Hair Two-Tone: Peekaboo Two-Tone Coloring
Shutterstock
First, pick the colors you want and make sure they are contrasting shades. You will need to consider your surface skin tone, undertone, hair color, usual makeup, and clothes when making this decision.
What You Need
Boxes of two hair colors
Old towel
Petroleum Jelly
Sectioning clips
Bowl
Hair coloring brush
How To Do
Divide your hair horizontally (from ear to ear) and clip up the top section.
Apply one hair dye to the lower half of your hair.
Cover this section with a foil to prevent it from getting on the top section.
Apply the second color to the top section of your hair.
Wait for the required time. Keep checking every 5-10 minutes to see if it has reached the desired shade.
Wash off the color once it has reached your desired shade.
If you want to go for a very stark contrast, it’s better to get it done at a professional salon.
Now, let’s get to the best two-tone hair color styles that you need to check out right now!

Women have a deep pull towards shades of purple like amethyst. Not only is it the color of royalty, but it also symbolizes feminine energy. Give your hair a royal do-over with this lovely shade.

24. Blonde Tips

This is the answer to that unsolvable question – blonde or brunette? Get the best of both worlds with a high contrast bronde two-tone mix. The dark roots accentuate the blonde hair while framing your face.
25. Candy Two-Tone

Think feminine with a hint of sophistication. Candy pink and pastel blue are the colors that come to mind. This blue to pink ombre is styled in those perfect twirls of hair, making it a mesmerizing waterfall.
26. Blonde Waves

Dirty blonde hair gives off the perfect beachy vibe. If you have naturally dark hair, the best way to change your look is to go blonde. While it is a hair change that requires serious thought, it sure is a head-turner. Instead of opting for a full blonde change, just go for a two-tone look.

10 Medium Length Hair Color Heaven – Beige – Brown – Blonde & Gray Blends
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Whether you’re after a new hair color for yourself, or checking the latest trends as a professional, this is a wonderful hair-color, master-class!  Our new gallery of medium length hair color ideas will update you with all the latest colors and techniques.  This year’s colors are soft and flattering, with lots of careful blending achieved with shades not far from the base.  And if that sounds simple enough to you, believe me, it’s not!  With today’s colorists using 4 – 6 different tones, plus toners, there’s a lot of complicated technique here!
Softly blended beiges medium length hair color design
This gorgeous color design adds so much to medium length hair.  Colors have been selected from the same color range, and at least four light and dark shades have been expertly blended.  You get a more natural finish when colors are within a tone or two of each other, which suits a casually tousled hairstyle.  The sophisticated technique avoids regular vertical streaks, in favor of balayage in an artistic design.  Shades include ash-brown, medium-ash-brown, cool beige, ash-blonde and caramel, so you need an experienced colorist for this style.  Extra highlighting in the long, swept-over front makes a flattering frame for the face in this expensive-looking bronde, shag-cut!
Bright white ombré on coffee – eye-catching medium length hair color
Credit
This eye-catching medium length hair color uses bright, white-blonde to create a fabulous color-contrast!  As it’s only layered towards the ends, you don’t lose any volume, so it’s a haircut suitable for medium – fine hair. There’s attractive shaping in hair cut shorter around the face and neck, dipping to a graduated U-shape at the back.  The tips are heavily textured to create a ragged-edge look, contrasting with the smooth, straight styling.  And there’s a hint of warmth in the warm-brown band fading to a white-blonde reverse ombré!
High-fashion ash-blonde bob – medium length hair color
Credit
If your hair is naturally fairly light, and you have blue or green eyes, this white/ash-blonde hair color is for you!  Although it’s a brilliant white-blonde, there are plenty of balayage touches that soften the color.  The roots are dove-gray, and there are lovely pearlized beige-blonde shades in the blend, too.  Pearlized colors have a gleaming finish that makes pale blonde shades gentler and more flattering against your skin.  And to make the colors match this model’s coloring perfectly, there are hints of pink toner, too.  It’s a wonderful, wavy angled bob that’s all ready to make an ‘entrance’ at any special occasion!
Dove-gray angled bob with purple toner – medium length hair color ideas

The popular trend for ash and gray hair colors has really shaken up people’s response to gray hair!  It’s no longer something we have to hide, fearing its ‘ageing’ effect, but a high-fashion option for all ages.  This is a great example of blended grays, with a little purple and violet toner adding warmth.  The medium length angled bob is suitable for most hair types and very trendy this season.  Gentle waves add extra volume to fine hair and the blend of grays, from ash-white to graphite-gray roots, create fashionable 3-dimensional density!
Shaggy medium bob & copper/blonde ombré for thick hair
Credit
This edgy, razor-cut style is a high-fashion look that’s perfect for getting the best out of thick hair!  Long layers are thinned out and textured at the tips, creating a shaggy, ragged vibe that’s casual and trendy.  Brunette roots gradually become warm copper balayage, before turning sun-bleached blonde at the tips.  The sides and back ends are ash-brown, so you appear to have naturally sun-bleached hair around the front.  But this is an expert color technique which creates a warm band of color between the roots and the tips.  It’s a fabulous way to add tons of style to a simple, straight hairstyle!
Flattering beige-brown update for brunette medium haircuts

No wonder this hair-color expert can’t help showing-off her handiwork in an exciting, new color-design!  Warm, medium-beige is such a great way to add a lighter, softer look to dark, coffee-brown hair.  It’s also a fabulous hair-color option for updating dark-blonde/mousey-brown hair, instead of boring blonde streaks!  This medium hairstyle is cut in long layers, retaining the natural volume.  Shaping is added at the tips which are textured and cleverly highlighted/lowlighted to look thicker.
Fashionable gray to ash-white medium bob on fine hair
Credit
Want a simple, easy-care haircut for medium to fine hair?  Well, here it is!  This no-nonsense bob can be cut to the same-length, or be graduated down to the front.  Long layers help fine and medium hair types look thicker.  And the choppy look of the ends, which are also heavily textured for a shaggy vibe, adds trendy ‘edge’ to this fashionable style.  Gray roots are gradually lightened to cool, ash-blonde ombré.  And this model has also chosen a hair color that harmonizes well with the deep-blue and red in her shoulder tattoos!
Shaggy medium haircut in light-gray & ash-blonde
Credit
Here’s a great way to go ‘blonde’, without worrying about your hair having a harsh or ‘brassy’, yellow tone.  It’s a youthful medium haircut, cut into medium – long layers, so it’s easier to get a messy finish.  There’s definitely a hint of glamor in the loose wave pattern, but the heavily textured tips are edgy and ragged.  The windswept styling is a great way to add volume to fine or medium hair.  And super-trendy graphite-gray roots gradually lighten to cool ash-blonde, balayage highlights and ombré.
Blended brown & gray taupe with pink & gold tones
Credit
What a fabulously subtle blending job this is!  It’s difficult to say whether it’s brown or gray, so I reckon the best description is ‘taupe’.  ‘Taupe’, is just the French word for, ‘mole’, (if you’ve ever wondered).  And as very few of us has ever seen a mole, they are supposed to have brown-gray fur.  Anyway, it’s a hot, new hair-color this season for anyone with dark-blonde, light-brown or mousey-brown hair.  The effect is slightly ‘grunge’, for those who love a grungy fashion style.  But like many color designs this year, toners have been added to warm-up and highlight the hair in an exciting new way!  And on an easy-care, long bob this super blend of brown, gray, gold and purple brings the whole look to life!
Spectacular white ombré on brunette long tousled waves
Credit
And finally, here’s a vibrant, cut and color that’s so full of texture, color and movement it almost bursts off the page and starts dancing in front of you!  I have cheated a little bit, by including a long hairstyle in my gallery of medium haircut hair color ideas.  But this fantastic brunette, copper brown to beige and white-blonde ombré would work just as well on a medium-length style.  The graduation and balayage work is outstanding and a great hair-color inspiration to end with!

25 Trendy Balayage Looks For Short Hair
Balayage on short hair can be a bit tricky. Unlike with long hair, the placement of the highlights and precision becomes very important. However, when done right, there are a few short styles that can beat the balayage look. Here, I’ve put together a list of 25 trendy balayage looks for short hair. But first, let’s look at how you can get this look at home.
How To Balayage Short Hair
You Will Need
A Balayage Kit
Clips For Sectioning
Toothbrush
Gloves
An Old Shirt
Comb
Shampoo
Conditioner
Method
Brush/comb your hair to get rid of any tangles. Ensure that you are working with hair that hasn’t been washed in a couple of days.
Put on your gloves and wear an old shirt that you wouldn’t mind getting stains on.
Following the instructions on the balayage kit, mix the lightener and developer.
If you have a bob or a lob, clip away the crown section of your hair and start working with the lower layers.
Using a toothbrush, start applying the highlights onto your hair.
Ensure the lights are heavier at the tips.
Take thin and evenly spaced sections of hair and brush the lightening mixture onto your hair from the mid-lengths to create a “swept on” effect.
If you have extremely short hair, apply the lightener only to the crown section of your hair.
For bobs or lobs, unclip the crown section and apply the balayage to these layers.
Once you’re done, leave the lightener on for the amount of time specified on the kit.
Shampoo and condition your hair.

Choose and ash blonde color that is not more than 2 shades lighter than your natural hair. If you have dark brown hair, choose an ash bronde (brown+blonde) color to work with.
Ensure that you are working with 2-day-old hair. The natural oils in your hair will help the highlighting process.
Put on your gloves and an old shirt that you wouldn’t mind getting stains on as the process is likely to get messy.
Apply vaseline all along your hairline and on your forehead, ears, and neck.
Following the instructions on the box, mix the hair dye and developer in a bowl. Conduct a strand test with the mixture to avoid disastrous results.
If the strand test meets your expectations, you are ready to start highlighting your hair.
Part your hair as you normally do and use the tail comb to separate a ½ inch of hair on either side of the part (work with smaller sections if you have fine hair.) These sections frame your face, and so are going to be bigger than the highlights at the back.
Using your toothbrush, apply the dye onto these strands. Once done, leave about ½ an inch of space and separate another section that is slightly smaller than the last one.
As you move towards the back of your head, ensure that the space in between the highlights is increasing while the thickness of each section is decreasing to about a quarter of an inch.
Repeat the process with the lower layers, spacing the highlights out even more.
You do not have to be too strict with the placement as highlights tend to look best and more natural when they are not evenly spaced.
Feel free to use generous amounts of dye near the tips of your hair.
Once you are done highlighting, leave the dye on for the indicated amount of time.
Wash and condition your hair.
