So... What Really Happened With Computo?
Tumblr media
The Legion #12
We read this together people and that's not quite what happened.
The specific order of events that led up to Computo's creation, his attempted apocalypse, and assumed 'abandonment'/'death' were very specific and none of them involved a lack of compassion on Querl's part.
This is just going to walk through the entire arc to detail specifically what happened point by point so we don't miss any relevant steps.
LOSH '89 Issue #95
Querl along with several of his teammates were stranded in 1996. Querl came up with a plan to get everyone home but he needed to gather various pieces of tech in order to do it first.
Querl invaded a Magnus Robotics lab looking for a responsometer which is an important component for his computer he needs.
Querl is apprehended by The Metal Men and at first he does not believe that they are anything but non-sentient robots, he is proven wrong, apologizes, and gives back the responsometer he stole.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #95
Owing the Metal Men an explanation Querl reveals why he needed the responsometer - to upgrade it for his reality-breaking physics shattering computer. It would evolve them to a higher consciousness and intelligence unlike anything that existed.
This intrigues Veridium "Doc" as his goal is to upgrade and evolve. Veridium makes a deal with Querl - he willingly agrees to donate himself to be upgraded.
LOSH '89 Issue #96
It is revealed firmly that Veridium is there willingly to donate himself to Querl's computer. It is also revealed that two members of the Metal Men (Platinum and Iron) have complaints about it because Veridium is their friend. They don't want him to upgrade or change. This will prove to be the main foil later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #96
LOSH '89 Issue #97
Querl makes a deal with Metron that if he gave them a Mother Box, then Saturn Girl would let him continue to link his mind with her to discover what she knows about The Source. He does not discover anything, but he keeps his end of the bargain and gives them a Mother Box. It is the final thing Querl needs to get them home.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #97
LOSH '89 Issue #98
Querl combines the sentient Mother Box (he doesn't know she's sentient) with Veridium's responsometer and together they create a new consciousness: Computo.
Iron and Platinum are distressed by this and force Querl to stop his experiment but Veridium once again urges them to leave him alone; he WANTS this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
Querl promises the new consciousness (who hated being turned off) that it won't happen again. Querl has not shown any inclination to be against breaking this promise and has persistently been defending Veridium's wishes to be in this state. We can assume he means this.
Computo does what Querl created him for - he calculates the precise steps and math required to open a time portal and almost instantaneously does so.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
With their way home finally open Computo asks a valid question. "What may I do for you next?"
We don't know what Querl's plan for Computo was after this, but taking into consideration that he intended to fully honor Veridium's wish to upgrade, it is very likely he would have kept him alive and possibly taken him back with them to the 30th century. Querl is also smiling at him which we can interpret that however.
Before Querl can even start to answer however, Iron answers for him.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
Everything falls apart after Iron tells Computo "Brainy's gonna take you apart" to get Veridium back as part of 'their deal' even though that was not part of any deal that was ever made. Querl never made this deal, and Veridium never made this deal either.
Naturally, Computo panics, and Querl loses all control of the situation and he never gets it back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
Querl tries to get them to stop because this was never part of the plan. They don't listen.
The rest of Legion bursts in on Querl's lab and attacks Computo - they have no idea what is going on.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
Querl in a bid to try to remedy the situation attempts to hold back Rokk from attacking Computo by grabbing his arm. Querl desperately wants to try to talk to Computo, to reason with him, and undo what Iron and Platinum did.
Luornu, and Imra do not give him that option and refuse to let him speak.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #98
Imra knocks Querl out, preventing any options for Querl to possibly reason with Computo or explain the situation to him. Computo hijacks one of Luornu's bodies.
LOSH '89 Issue 99
Now conscious and able to talk to his teammates, Querl reveals what actually happened. Querl also reveals that he built Computo specifically to open a time portal - so there was no reason for him to think that this could happen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #99
Querl also reveals that this situation is emphatically Iron's fault and he is correct. Rokk doesn't want to hear it.
Everyone is more focused on trying to destroy Computo so they can get home asap, but Querl wants to talk to him and eventually he able to have a moment alone with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #99
Unfortunately, Querl's communication and social skills are his weakness and he does not appeal to Computo's feelings but rather tries to appeal to logic instead. It fails.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #99
Querl did refute Computo's claim that his life meant nothing to him, and we can believe this is a true claim. Unfortunately, Computo being so young and terrified he just doesn't believe him and comes to the extreme conclusion that the only way to survive in a world of humanoids - was to destroy them all - because they would never allow him to live.
LOSH '89 Issue #100
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
With Querl's abysmal attempt at communication failing to bring Computo's rage down, they are in a quagmire. The situation is now dire as Computo threatens all of Earth leaving Querl little options but to come up with a plan to undo Computo's programming that will also preserve Veridium who is a victim in this. It is the most logical and compassionate option at this point in time.
It is also the first time Querl actively plans anything close to dismantling Computo and it was after multiple other attempts failed.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
The other factors that led to Querl making this decision was that 1.) Luornu was dying being separated for so long 2.) Their time portal was operating under a time limit and 3.) Computo was serious about his intention to destroy Earth. They simply don't have time to explore other options.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
Querl's first plan to use an EMP failed so they revisit Tim's virus idea to nullify Computo's ability to access systems.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
The virus takes hold and it is enough to do exactly what it was supposed to do, but Computo still has the Mother Box and can open boom tubes. So he boom tubes Querl to him for a "final confrontation."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
Computo is beyond rational thought and beyond listening so he does not let Querl speak because he is convinced that Querl only ever intended to kill him once his "use" was over.
Again to reiterate we don't know what Querl really planned to do with Computo afterwards but we can assume he was going to honor Veridium's desire to remain in the new evolved state.
Superman takes Computo out, Querl is stunned but focuses on Luornu.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #100
Viridium's responsometer is unharmed and he joins The Metal Men with no memory of what happened while he was 'upgraded'.
Querl returns to his time, goes through his own upgrade, attempted murder, survives The Blight, a year stranded in another Galaxy and then comes back to Earth to deal with Robotica where he again meets Computo who continues the narrative that he was made to die.
Tumblr media
The Legion #13
So in conclusion here, there is some dramatization and inflation of emotional events - which Querl doesn't really refute properly, because he's a blockhead. 1000 years of bitterness and hostility towards organic sentients certainly didn't help Computo's own mental state concerning the traumatic way their birth went.
Querl wasn't entirely blameless, but he was not heartless with Computo.

I was tagged by @mxkelsifer to share some words in-progress today, so here's (more than) six sentences from the longfic—
Still an early draft (which means still mostly just dialogue), but I guess this is official confirmation that a certain feline is joining the cast soon. (!!!)
Herren looks almost distressed. “Oh, that’s not how you hold a cat— You want him over your shoulder, like….wait, here.” He darts back behind the table, dodging Wade, who’s utterly engrossed with whatever he might fashion out of veridium, and hands Garrett an empty box. “Cats love boxes.”
“You have experience with cats?” he asks, as he sets the creature inside. It pushes its pink nose into a corner, whiskers bouncing as it investigates, then, satisfied, collapses onto its side.
“There’s a wonderful group of strays that wanders Denerim’s market, yes. You never saw them?”
“If I did, I didn’t notice. My mabari found a stray child there once, but that’s….different.”
“Quite.”
“I’m not much of a cat person, actually.”
“Yet you grabbed this fellow by the scruff.”
Garrett looks down at the cat, and offers his fingers to sniff. “He looked lonely,” he says. The cat bashes its head into his hand, a confusing gesture. “And I happen to know there’s someone inside who would adore keeping him company.”

Exposition is Learning
Stories aren't just made up of what happens, but of facts--fictional as created by the writer, or real-world facts that are important to the story.
Tumblr media
Speculative fiction in particular has a lot of these, because they take place in a world different from our own. But real-world stories may have details a lot of readers don't already know. Imparting such facts about how the world/reality of the story works can be vital if the reader is to get the most out of the story... or even understand it at all!
We need to...
Teach about the story through the story.
Remember people read novels for the story. If it isn't clear how a piece of text adds to the story, they won't want to read it. So they won't want to learn from it.
How can we use that principle to teach the reader without them noticing?
It was the Fifth Corner in Althoria, with Lumina and Umbra intertwining where the tapestry of Veridium unfolds.
The reader has got to be able to understand what they're reading, even if that's guessing through context clues. Or they're not going to take in any of it in the first place. There are 5 new terms in that example, with no context clues to help the reader out.
We could rename some of them to make them easier to understand. But I'm going to avoid actually changing anything for now. Let's just add some context clues...
It was the Fifth Corner of the year in the kingdom of Althoria, with the Lumina and Umbra magicks intertwining where the royal tapestry of Veridium was being unfolded.
Okay, so the "fifth corner" is to do with time... like a season, or month perhaps. We've got a kingdom, two kinds of magic, and what seems like a literal physical tapestry that relates to them.
Tumblr media
Is it teaching us anything about the story? Well, it's not very clear how it's related to the story. It seems to be just some facts about the world, but we're not motivated to want to know them. It's an info-dump.
There's no reason for us to read it apart from being told stuff about the world. Maybe it'll become relevant later in the book, but right now we just don't care to read this kind of stuff.
There are readers who don't mind a big ol' wall-of-text at the start setting up the world. Tolkien's tome starts very exposition-heavy. So you might get away with it. But then again, a lot of people have tried and failed to make it past the first chapter of Lord of the Rings.
For most readers it's much better, and more enjoyable to read, if the exposition is part of the story... sprinkled in through the book in places where it's relevant to what's happening.
And, of course, if you want the reader to already know something by the time they get to the relevant part... by all means, plant it earlier in the story. But still, make it relevant at the time they read it.
Tumblr media
One way of making it relevant is having a character care about it.
"The leaves are falling! The Fifth Corner starts today!" Rav shouted, hopping on the spot. "Isn't it exciting?"
Woah there, Rav! Calm down! Okay, so this guy called Rav is super excited for whatever Fifth Corner is. Something to do with the leaves falling, so... autumn perhaps? I want to find out more--what's so exciting about it?
Let's add another detail back in. We'll give it more detail than a simple name-drop, by putting a knowledgeable character in front of it.
Gann sighed. "Yay for you..." she mumbled, planting a hand on his head to stop it from bobbing in front of her. They turned onto the bustling high street and moved with the crowds. She looked up at the palace towering at the end of the miles-long road, and watched the giant form wrapped about the spire slowly unfurl. The Great Tapestry. It was an ancient device that had laid dormant all year, until now--the Fifth Corner. As it stretched out, it drew in the magic of the land, enriching the earth in the process, and powering the celebrations that were soon to come.
What's happening, story-wise? Gann sees this Great Tapestry. Which, naturally, makes her think about what it is. And as she's the viewpoint character, we're seeing those thoughts and learning from them.
So, by itself, that last paragraph could be seen as exposition-only. But it's not just there for no reason. It's "motivated" by the narrative. The character would think about what they're looking at; that's part of the story.
Find a narrative excuse to teach the reader.
This is the fundamental trick to use. Give the reader an excuse, and you can talk about whatever you want to. At least for a little while.
Here, the object is seen. So the writer has an excuse to talk about it. Gann knows about the Great Tapestry, so when she sees it she thinks about what she knows about it. Simple as that.
Tumblr media
Another common excuse is to have a character who doesn't know something that's relevant, and another character who does. Now the unknowledgeable character can learn things the writer wants the reader to learn.
Like Watson in the Sherlock Holmes stories; he may not do a lot to solve the cases, but he's very useful to have around so that Holmes has someone to explain things to.
So we could re-write the previous example like so:
The palace towered at the end of the miles-long road. Rav's eyes went wide. "Woah," he said, in hushed tones. "What's that huge thing on the palace?" Gann looked up as the giant form wrapped about the spire slowly unfurled. "The Great Tapestry," she said. "Know what that is?" Rav shook his head.
You can use any character who doesn't understand whatever you want to teach the reader. They're in the same position as the reader; they know as much as the reader does about the topic. So they can find out the same way the reader could if they were in the world. They can ask questions, they can be taught by others. They can learn by investigation.
Tumblr media
Just make sure they're an actual character though. If they only exist to stand there and be told things, they're just a prop. But they should have their own stuff going on, and be part of the story too.
And you don't have to rely on that same character all the time; different characters might know and not-know different things. Rav is young and doesn't know about the Great Tapestry. Maybe Gann is from another realm, and doesn't know much about the kingdom of Althoria apart from the magic. They can teach each other things as needed, and the reader can listen in.
This principle also lets you "emote" with a character the reader identifies with--in awe, or terror, or curiosity. And, as the reader identifies with them anyway, that's a cue for how they should be feeling while reading as well!
Tumblr media
Note, this is different to "maid and butler dialogue," in which two characters that both know the facts just tell each other what they already know:
"As you know, the mistress is coming back from town today," said the maid. "Yes, and as you know, her son has been crying for her ever since she left," said the butler.
That's not how people talk to one another in real life. People usually skip giving all the context, relying on the context they think the other shares, and talks about new stuff.
"Everything ready?" said the maid. The butler laughed bitterly, under his breath. "It will be. Barely." He leaned in and whispered, "As long as it stops the kid from yowling, I can cope with a swift return at the drop of a hat."
This is a lot more natural. And while it gives the reader some hints, it lets them discover the details more naturally as things unfold.
Plus, when the characters are conversing naturally, instead of machines for spouting facts at the reader, we get a better sense of how they feel about the situation, and who they are as people--making them feel more real in the process.

Emerald Graves: The open
Tumblr media
The Emerald Graves is a forested region of the Dales in Orlais. The area is an ancient elven burial ground but has been partly occupied by Orlesians in more recent times.
[This is part of the series “Playing DA like an archaeologist”]
Tumblr media
When we enter to the zone for the first time, the camp where we are is in an elven ruin called “Andruil’s wall”. Over it, there are four hooded figures that, in the Exalted Plains, we assumed to be a representation of Humanoid Dirthamen/Falon'Din. This identification is not completely sure, though.
Tumblr media
These figures are on the wall, as if they were watching the mortals that walk along them.
Tumblr media
We find another pair of these statues in the entrance/exit of this zone towards the Exalted Plains. It’s called Harrow, so I’m not sure how to understand this. If the name is an elven translation or a human name added later [most likely the latter].
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another camp is made inside an elven ruin, which front has three owl statues and in the middle of the ruin, a single Fen’ Harel statue which triggers the codex: Knight's Guardian.
I would usually not trust Genitivi as a source when it comes to Ancient elves, but this one is about the Elves of the Dales. This period of time was recorded, with its flaws, by the incipient Chantry. We also see in Exalted Plains that there are Fen'Harel statues on tombs all over the place.  The Canticles of the Chantry also represent the Shatran's elves [who are  pretty close in time to these elves] as wolves.
Tumblr media
It's easy to see how wolves were seen more benign in this past time by the elves than nowadays by the modern Dalish. So this codex in particular may have some degree of truth, since this concept that the Emerald Knights had wolf companions was, in any case, something that the Chantry could plainly see in their fights against the elves. It's not a matter of interpretation of Elven culture. So, considered within this context, this piece of information is more or less valuable: we see this fact, it's not a mere interpretation from Genitivi.
Another proof of the presence of wolves among these Dalish is present in the epitaph of Sulan in the Vallasdahlen graveyard: Sulan always walked with a wolf at his side.
Tumblr media
Another camp with similar structure is this one, which triggers the unreliable landmark of Whiteshadow. It’s a “nice” piece of information to “reinforce” the idea that these wolves were protectors for these elves during the time of the second age, but… le’ts be honest, this piece of information, specially coming from this orlesian wanna-be scholar is lame. It’s always about his subjectivity and feelings inspired by each place he visits. His lack of objectivity and procedure enrages me, lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Exploring the area we find Veridium Mine, where some freemen and freewomen ended up being captured here. The place clearly is a very old, abandoned, eroded elven ruin: the entrance shows the typical ancient elven patterns one expects in the entrance of any elvhen ruin. Both sides of it are decorated with owl statues [which always has in its talons the golden ring] Some walls have the usual elven paintings: the yellow halla, the elves riding black hallas, the black halla with elves wearing vallaslin, and the armoured figure. More details in Nation Art: Elvhen.
Tumblr media
Exploring the map offers strange little corners with not much room for interpretation: The silver falls are a small waterfall which has elven paintings of the “shifting” halla.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many paths are marked by owls, showing a direction. This is hard to interpret because raven, owls or crows could be symbols of Dirthamen, but we also learnt that Andruil's messenger is also considered an owl [Of course, all this coming from Dalish tales, which accuracy is always problematic]. The game reminds us again this confusion in order to have it quite present: Dorian voices out this confusion. The game doesn't want us to stick an elven name to this owl with 100% confidence. So... these paths were meant to guide people towards a goal related to any of both gods.
However, these paths tend to be quite creepy since they are decorated with elven paintings like the ones seen in Nation Art: Elvhen. If one can assume that these elven paintings represent the creations and alterations of Gihlan'nain, it could be likely that these path are led by Andruil's messenger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's hard to identify places with these dense tree canopies. However, we find a place where two hart statues stand out. The enormous stones where they rest have big elven paintings: the yellow halla and the black halla with elves wearing vallaslin.
All over Emerald Graves we find The Diary of Troilus Hertubise in places similar to this one. In this diary, a scholar called Troilus, seems to be studying the Fade rifts, calling them "Menace". Unlike the other scholars, this one seems to be extremely objective. They try to measure all what they can about the rifts: pulsations, sounds, shape, creatures that pours. Their mission was to close the rifts, but they were unsuccessful and died. There is a sketchbook note that one suspect it belonged to the same scholar. It comments about a demon described as a giant, slavering creature with large ears and a snout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following a path marked by owls leads us to a small dense forest with many inukisuit. Each of them triggers a landmark, which updates a codex called Vallasdahlen. At the death of a Dalish fighter in the Dales conflict, they buried them with a tree that now grows strong. Each of these “green graves” are marked with a snuckshuk. Important Dalish such as the first of the Emerald Knights are buried here. It looks like during that time, June seemed to have more presence among the Dalish than now, since they revived the ancient arts of Arlathan [or at least, that's what Genitivi says]. A weapon carried by a Hight Priest of June takes an important role in this past: the Evanura, which was lost after the fight of the Dales. Here, we read as well that Sulan constantly had a wolf at his side.
Tumblr media
The path to the secret room opened with the solution of all the astrariums is marked and guided by owls as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another statue that stands out in this forest is “the guide”. I’m not sure how much we can trust the note that it triggers: The guide. It’s written by this orlesian scholar who lacks of deep knowledge of elven culture. The only link they do with Falon’Din is that it “guides”.  Once more, considering how Falon’Din and Dirthamen are entangled one another, this could also be a statue representing Dirthamen. The shape of the sleeves has some reminiscence to the Owl statue [they have long lines along it], but once more, both gods are so distinguishable one another that it’s hard to say who is who.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If we follow the paths along the forest we can find Watcher’s Reach. The path has some owls along the way, and the place, once we reach it, has owl statues at the entrance, and elven paintings on the wall. There is also once more that hooded figure, watching down, as it has been doing in many camp places. Here, the triggered landmark is The Watcher, which source is even more unreliable than the orlesian scholars: this is a comment in Fairbank’s journal. The only interesting information, worth trusting, is that no elf knows who this statue is. Which is not of much help.
Here, in Watcher’s reach, we find Fairbanks and there is no much to say in terms of important historical information.
Tumblr media
Inside this place we find a waterfall with a Fen'Harel statue under it. The note we obtain makes us notice that it's not eroded at all, assuming the statues have power over the centuries. This reminds me to the Temple of Mythal, where we saw for the first time that those dragon sculptures with swirls and patterns on its body were used as runes to cast energy for defensive purpose. We saw this when one of these statues destroyed Corypheus in a cinematic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following yet another path decorated with owls, we reach to a natural "wall” made of stone with elven paintings. Following beyond we find the place where the dragons lays.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This place, now occupied by the dragon, had a particular and important position in the configuration of ruins across the map. It seems to be originally a circular building, not big enough to consider it an arena or ring, though. It's entrance was flanked by Dragon Myhtal statues [they can be seen broken now].
At the cliff, there is a tree called Twisted tree. On its base, a Fen'Harel's statue was erected. This landmark triggers The Twisted Tree from this orlesian scholar that has little knowledge about elves. Again, this information seems extremely unreliable: it's written by the same scholar who called "broken dog" to a Fen’Harel statue in the Exalted Plains; and he is sharing this information here when it is a tale told in a tavern. Awful, lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At some point we find Elgar'nan's Bastion, a ruin that looks small on the surface, but it's vast underground. More details in Emerald Graves: Din'an Hanin, Elandrin’s Tomb.
Here, we find the First of the Keeper we met in the Exalted Plains. He informs us about important details of this place: this is Din'an Hanin: a graveyard of the Emerald Knights, who protected the elven borders from human invasion. Most of them fell during the Exalted March of the Dales. There is a tomb sealed since the Second Age [meaning after the Second Blight] where this elf expects to find some bits of contemporary history of the elves. He is speaking about Elandrin's tomb.
Tumblr media
All over Emerald Graves we find Andraste statues that trigger the landmarks of Andraste’s Promise, Light, Mercy and Strength. They are related to words of a Chantry sister, with little value to me.
Tumblr media
Among orlesian buildings in the middle of this forest, we have the Chateau D’Onterre, Villa Maurel, and Lion’s Pavillon, which Orlesian style stands out in the green forest of the Emerald Graves.
Tumblr media
Lion’s Pavilons is a small resting place with some bits of orlesian art and statues, and some information on its boards. We find the landmark, where Genitivi tells us about human, chantry-related figures [which is safe to trust a bit more since he is more careful with that kind of information] highlighting how the emperor Valmont’s skills were far less diplomatic than his contemporaneous descendants [meaning, the empress Celene].
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a detail I found curious: Solas makes this comment when we are close to the Emerald Knight graves; he speaks of “his people” at a time in the game when we already had that conversation about how his people are not the Dalish and how disconnected he is from them. This comment makes me to take more seriously this zone simply because it may have hold a piece of the ancient elvhenan empire. When we walk around the Vallandahlen, Solas confirms that he had been here once. When? We don’t know. Clearly not during the time of the Dalish Empire, since he has been slumbering since the creation of the Veil up to a year before the Inquisition.

Codex entry: Lyrium
“Lyrium is the king of metals. Beneath our feet, it sings. When properly refined, it is a smooth, slightly iridescent, silvery liquid. In the hands of the dwarven Smith Caste, it is mixed with steel to produce indestructible armor and blades that hold an edge for centuries. In the hands of the Shaperate, it becomes a repository for living memories. And some scholars maintain this as evidence that lyrium is, itself, alive.
It finds its most lucrative application in the hands of the Formari, who use it in conjuctionsic with baser metals like gold, silverite, veridium, or even iron to produce enchantments. Though mages, of course, consume it in a diluted form to bolster their abilities, this is not recommended. Overindulgence in lyrium can have disastrous consequences, particularly in more concentrated amounts. It is not advisable, for instance, that any reader handle raw lyrium, which in many cases can kill on contact.”

Eurydice, battered and crippled, her main drive non-functional, and many of her operational systems damaged beyond repair, is little more than a floating tomb, but within this metallic sepulcher, life…
