the great reddit API meltdown of '23, or: this was always bound to happen

there's a lot of press about what's going on with reddit right now (app shutdowns, subreddit blackouts, the CEO continually putting his foot in his mouth), but I haven't seen as much stuff talking about how reddit got into this situation to begin with. so as a certified non-expert and Context Enjoyer I thought it might be helpful to lay things out as I understand them—a high-level view, surveying the whole landscape—in the wonderful world of startups, IPOs, and extremely angry users.

disclaimer that I am not a founder or VC (lmao), have yet to work at a company with a successful IPO, and am not a reddit employee or third-party reddit developer or even a subreddit moderator. I do work at a startup, know my way around an API or two, and have spent twelve regrettable years on reddit itself. which is to say that I make no promises of infallibility, but I hope you'll at least find all this interesting.

profit now or profit later

before you can really get into reddit as reddit, it helps to know a bit about startups (of which reddit is one). and before I launch into that, let me share my Three Types Of Websites framework, which is basically just a mental model about financial incentives that's helped me contextualize some of this stuff.

(1) website/software that does not exist to make money: relatively rare, for a variety of reasons, among them that it costs money to build and maintain a website in the first place. wikipedia is the evergreen example, although even wikipedia's been subject to criticism for how the wikimedia foundation pays out its employees and all that fun nonprofit stuff. what's important here is that even when making money is not the goal, money itself is still a factor, whether it's solicited via donations or it's just one guy paying out of pocket to host a hobby site. but websites in this category do, generally, offer free, no-strings-attached experiences to their users.

(I do want push back against the retrospective nostalgia of "everything on the internet used to be this way" because I don't think that was ever really true—look at AOL, the dotcom boom, the rise of banner ads. I distinctly remember that neopets had multiple corporate sponsors, including a cookie crisp-themed flash game. yahoo bought geocities for $3.6 billion; money's always been trading hands, obvious or not. it's indisputable that the internet is simply different now than it was ten or twenty years ago, and that monetization models themselves have largely changed as well (I have thoughts about this as it relates to web 1.0 vs web 2.0 and their associated costs/scale/etc.), but I think the only time people weren't trying to squeeze the internet for all the dimes it can offer was when the internet was first conceived as a tool for national defense.)

(2) website/software that exists to make money now: the type that requires the least explanation. mostly non-startup apps and services, including any random ecommerce storefront, mobile apps that cost three bucks to download, an MMO with a recurring subscription, or even a news website that runs banner ads and/or offers paid subscriptions. in most (but not all) cases, the "make money now" part is obvious, so these things don't feel free to us as users, even to the extent that they might have watered-down free versions or limited access free trials. no one's shocked when WoW offers another paid expansion packs because WoW's been around for two decades and has explicitly been trying to make money that whole time.

(3) website/software that exists to make money later: this is the fun one, and more common than you'd think. "make money later" is more or less the entire startup business model—I'll get into that in the next section—and is deployed with the expectation that you will make money at some point, but not always by means as obvious as "selling WoW expansions for forty bucks a pop."

companies in this category tend to have two closely entwined characteristics: they prioritize growth above all else, regardless of whether this growth is profitable in any way (now, or sometimes, ever), and they do this by offering users really cool and awesome shit at little to no cost (or, if not for free, then at least at a significant loss to the company).

so from a user perspective, these things either seem free or far cheaper than their competitors. but of course websites and software and apps and [blank]-as-a-service tools cost money to build and maintain, and that money has to come from somewhere, and the people supplying that money, generally, expect to get it back...

just not immediately.

startups, VCs, IPOs, and you

here's the extremely condensed "did NOT go to harvard business school" version of how a startup works:

(1) you have a cool idea.

(2) you convince some venture capitalists (also known as VCs) that your idea is cool. if they see the potential in what you're pitching, they'll give you money in exchange for partial ownership of your company—which means that if/when the company starts trading its stock publicly, these investors will own X numbers of shares that they can sell at any time. in other words, you get free money now (and you'll likely seek multiple "rounds" of investors over the years to sustain your company), but with the explicit expectations that these investors will get their payoff later, assuming you don't crash and burn before that happens.

during this phase, you want to do anything in your power to make your company appealing to investors so you can attract more of them and raise funds as needed. because you are definitely not bringing in the necessary revenue to offset operating costs by yourself.

it's also worth nothing that this is less about projecting the long-term profitability of your company than it's about its perceived profitability—i.e., VCs want to put their money behind a company that other people will also have confidence in, because that's what makes stock valuable, and VCs are in it for stock prices.

(3) there are two non-exclusive win conditions for your startup: you can get acquired, and you can have an IPO (also referred to as "going public"). these are often called "exit scenarios" and they benefit VCs and founders, as well as some employees. it's also possible for a company to get acquired, possibly even more than once, and then later go public.

acquisition: sell the whole damn thing to someone else. there are a million ways this can happen, some better than others, but in many cases this means anyone with ownership of the company (which includes both investors and employees who hold stock options) get their stock bought out by the acquiring company and end up with cash in hand. in varying amounts, of course. sometimes the founders walk away, sometimes the employees get laid off, but not always.

IPO: short for "initial public offering," this is when the company starts trading its stocks publicly, which means anyone who wants to can start buying that company's stock, which really means that VCs (and employees with stock options) can turn that hypothetical money into real money by selling their company stock to interested buyers.

drawing from that, companies don't go for an IPO until they think their stock will actually be worth something (or else what's the point?)—specifically, worth more than the amount of money that investors poured into it. The Powers That Be will speculate about a company's IPO potential way ahead of time, which is where you'll hear stuff about companies who have an estimated IPO evaluation of (to pull a completely random example) $10B. actually I lied, that was not a random example, that was reddit's valuation back in 2021 lol. but a valuation is basically just "how much will people be interested in our stock?"

as such, in the time leading up to an IPO, it's really really important to do everything you can to make your company seem like a good investment (which is how you get stock prices up), usually by making the company's numbers look good. but! if you plan on cashing out, the long-term effects of your decisions aren't top of mind here. remember, the industry lingo is "exit scenario."

if all of this seems like a good short-term strategy for companies and their VCs, but an unsustainable model for anyone who's buying those stocks during the IPO, that's because it often is.

also worth noting that it's possible for a company to be technically unprofitable as a business (meaning their costs outstrip their revenue) and still trade enormously well on the stock market; uber is the perennial example of this. to the people who make money solely off of buying and selling stock, it literally does not matter that the actual rideshare model isn't netting any income—people think the stock is valuable, so it's valuable.

this is also why, for example, elon musk is richer than god: if he were only the CEO of tesla, the money he'd make from selling mediocre cars would be (comparatively, lol) minimal. but he's also one of tesla's angel investors, which means he holds a shitload of tesla stock, and tesla's stock has performed well since their IPO a decade ago (despite recent dips)—even if tesla itself has never been a huge moneymaker, public faith in the company's eventual success has kept them trading at high levels. granted, this also means most of musk's wealth is hypothetical and not liquid; if TSLA dropped to nothing, so would the value of all the stock he holds (and his net work with it).

what's an API, anyway?

to move in an entirely different direction: we can't get into reddit's API debacle without understanding what an API itself is.

an API (short for "application programming interface," not that it really matters) is a series of code instructions that independent developers can use to plug their shit into someone else's shit. like a series of tin cans on strings between two kids' treehouses, but for sending and receiving data.

APIs work by yoinking data directly from a company's servers instead of displaying anything visually to users. so I could use reddit's API to build my own app that takes the day's top r/AITA post and transcribes it into pig latin: my app is a bunch of lines of code, and some of those lines of code fetch data from reddit (and then transcribe that data into pig latin), and then my app displays the content to anyone who wants to see it, not reddit itself. as far as reddit is concerned, no additional human beings laid eyeballs on that r/AITA post, and reddit never had a chance to serve ads alongside the pig-latinized content in my app. (put a pin in this part—it'll be relevant later.)

but at its core, an API is really a type of protocol, which encompasses a broad category of formats and business models and so on. some APIs are completely free to use, like how anyone can build a discord bot (but you still have to host it yourself). some companies offer free APIs to third-party developers can build their own plugins, and then the company and the third-party dev split the profit on those plugins. some APIs have a free tier for hobbyists and a paid tier for big professional projects (like every weather API ever, lol). some APIs are strictly paid services because the API itself is the company's core offering.

reddit's financial foundations

okay thanks for sticking with me. I promise we're almost ready to be almost ready to talk about the current backlash.

reddit has always been a startup's startup from day one: its founders created the site after attending a startup incubator (which is basically a summer camp run by VCs) with the successful goal of creating a financially successful site. backed by that delicious y combinator money, reddit got acquired by conde nast only a year or two after its creation, which netted its founders a couple million each. this was back in like, 2006 by the way. in the time since that acquisition, reddit's gone through a bunch of additional funding rounds, including from big-name investors like a16z, peter thiel (yes, that guy), sam altman (yes, also that guy), sequoia, fidelity, and tencent. crunchbase says that they've raised a total of $1.3B in investor backing.

in all this time, reddit has never been a public company, or, strictly speaking, profitable.

APIs and third-party apps

reddit has offered free API access for basically as long as it's had a public API—remember, as a "make money later" company, their primary goal is growth, which means attracting as many users as possible to the platform. so letting anyone build an app or widget is (or really, was) in line with that goal.

as such, third-party reddit apps have been around forever. by third-party apps, I mean apps that use the reddit API to display actual reddit content in an unofficial wrapper. iirc reddit didn't even have an official mobile app until semi-recently, so many of these third-party mobile apps in particular just sprung up to meet an unmet need, and they've kept a small but dedicated userbase ever since. some people also prefer the user experience of the unofficial apps, especially since they offer extra settings to customize what you're seeing and few to no ads (and any ads these apps do display are to the benefit of the third-party developers, not reddit itself.)

(let me add this preemptively: one solution I've seen proposed to the paid API backlash is that reddit should have third-party developers display reddit's ads in those third-party apps, but this isn't really possible or advisable due to boring adtech reasons I won't inflict on you here. source: just trust me bro)

in addition to mobile apps, there are also third-party tools that don’t replace the Official Reddit Viewing Experience but do offer auxiliary features like being able to mass-delete your post history, tools that make the site more accessible to people who use screen readers, and tools that help moderators of subreddits moderate more easily. not to mention a small army of reddit bots like u/AutoWikibot or u/RemindMebot (and then the bots that tally the number of people who reply to bot comments with “good bot” or “bad bot).

the number of people who use third-party apps is relatively small, but they arguably comprise some of reddit’s most dedicated users, which means that third-party apps are important to the people who keep reddit running and the people who supply reddit with high-quality content.

unpaid moderators and user-generated content

so reddit is sort of two things: reddit is a platform, but it’s also a community.

the platform is all the unsexy (or, if you like python, sexy) stuff under the hood that actually makes the damn thing work. this is what the company spends money building and maintaining and "owns." the community is all the stuff that happens on the platform: posts, people, petty squabbles. so the platform is where the content lives, but ultimately the content is the reason people use reddit—no one’s like “yeah, I spend time on here because the backend framework really impressed me."

and all of this content is supplied by users, which is not unique among social media platforms, but the content is also managed by users, which is. paid employees do not govern subreddits; unpaid volunteers do. and moderation is the only thing that keeps reddit even remotely tolerable—without someone to remove spam, ban annoying users, and (god willing) enforce rules against abuse and hate speech, a subreddit loses its appeal and therefore its users. not dissimilar to the situation we’re seeing play out at twitter, except at twitter it was the loss of paid moderators; reddit is arguably in a more precarious position because they could lose this unpaid labor at any moment, and as an already-unprofitable company they absolutely cannot afford to implement paid labor as a substitute.

oh yeah? spell "IPO" backwards

so here we are, June 2023, and reddit is licking its lips in anticipation of a long-fabled IPO. which means it’s time to start fluffing themselves up for investors by cutting costs (yay, layoffs!) and seeking new avenues of profit, however small.

this brings us to the current controversy: reddit announced a new API pricing plan that more or less prevents anyone from using it for free.

from reddit's perspective, the ostensible benefits of charging for API access are twofold: first, there's direct profit to be made off of the developers who (may or may not) pay several thousand dollars a month to use it, and second, cutting off unsanctioned third-party mobile apps (possibly) funnels those apps' users back into the official reddit mobile app. and since users on third-party apps reap the benefit of reddit's site architecture (and hosting, and development, and all the other expenses the site itself incurs) without “earning” money for reddit by generating ad impressions, there’s a financial incentive at work here: even if only a small percentage of people use third-party apps, getting them to use the official app instead translates to increased ad revenue, however marginal.

(also worth mentioning that chatGPT and other LLMs were trained via tools that used reddit's API to scrape post and content data, and now that openAI is reaping the profits of that training without giving reddit any kickbacks, reddit probably wants to prevent repeats of this from happening in the future. if you want to train the next LLM, it's gonna cost you.)

of course, these changes only benefit reddit if they actually increase the company’s revenue and perceived value/growth—which is hard to do when your users (who are also the people who supply the content for other users to engage with, who are also the people who moderate your communities and make them fun to participate in) get really fucking pissed and threaten to walk.

pricing shenanigans

under the new API pricing plan, third-party developers are suddenly facing steep costs to maintain the apps and tools they’ve built.

most paid APIs are priced by volume: basically, the more data you send and receive, the more money it costs. so if your third-party app has a lot of users, you’ll have to make more API requests to fetch content for those users, and your app becomes more expensive to maintain. (this isn’t an issue if the tool you’re building also turns a profit, but most third-party reddit apps make little, if any, money.)

which is why, even though third-party apps capture a relatively small portion of reddit’s users, the developer of a popular third-party app called apollo recently learned that it would cost them about $20 million a year to keep the app running. and apollo actually offers some paid features (for extra in-app features independent of what reddit offers), but nowhere near enough to break even on those API costs.

so apollo, any many apps like it, were suddenly unable to keep their doors open under the new API pricing model and announced that they'd be forced to shut down.

backlash, blackout

plenty has been said already about the current subreddit blackouts—in like, official news outlets and everything—so this might be the least interesting section of my whole post lol. the short version is that enough redditors got pissed enough that they collectively decided to take subreddits “offline” in protest, either by making them read-only or making them completely inaccessible. their goal was to send a message, and that message was "if you piss us off and we bail, here's what reddit's gonna be like: a ghost town."

but, you may ask, if third-party apps only captured a small number of users in the first place, how was the backlash strong enough to result in a near-sitewide blackout? well, two reasons:

first and foremost, since moderators in particular are fond of third-party tools, and since moderators wield outsized power (as both the people who keep your site more or less civil, and as the people who can take a subreddit offline if they feel like it), it’s in your best interests to keep them happy. especially since they don’t get paid to do this job in the first place, won’t keep doing it if it gets too hard, and essentially have nothing to lose by stepping down.

then, to a lesser extent, the non-moderator users on third-party apps tend to be Power Users who’ve been on reddit since its inception, and as such likely supply a disproportionate amount of the high-quality content for other users to see (and for ads to be served alongside). if you drive away those users, you’re effectively kneecapping your overall site traffic (which is bad for Growth) and reducing the number/value of any ad impressions you can serve (which is bad for revenue).

also a secret third reason, which is that even people who use the official apps have no stake in a potential IPO, can smell the general unfairness of this whole situation, and would enjoy the schadenfreude of investors getting fucked over. not to mention that reddit’s current CEO has made a complete ass of himself and now everyone hates him and wants to see him suffer personally.

(granted, it seems like reddit may acquiesce slightly and grant free API access to a select set of moderation/accessibility tools, but at this point it comes across as an empty gesture.)

"later" is now "now"

TL;DR: this whole thing is a combination of many factors, specifically reddit being intensely user-driven and self-governed, but also a high-traffic site that costs a lot of money to run (why they willingly decided to start hosting video a few years back is beyond me...), while also being angled as a public stock market offering in the very near future. to some extent I understand why reddit’s CEO doubled down on the changes—he wants to look strong for investors—but he’s also made a fool of himself and cast a shadow of uncertainty onto reddit’s future, not to mention the PR nightmare surrounding all of this. and since arguably the most important thing in an IPO is how much faith people have in your company, I honestly think reddit would’ve fared better if they hadn’t gone nuclear with the API changes in the first place.

that said, I also think it’s a mistake to assume that reddit care (or needs to care) about its users in any meaningful way, or at least not as more than means to an end. if reddit shuts down in three years, but all of the people sitting on stock options right now cashed out at $120/share and escaped unscathed... that’s a success story! you got your money! VCs want to recoup their investment—they don’t care about longevity (at least not after they’re gone), user experience, or even sustained profit. those were never the forces driving them, because these were never the ultimate metrics of their success.

and to be clear: this isn’t unique to reddit. this is how pretty much all startups operate.

I talked about the difference between “make money now” companies and “make money later” companies, and what we’re experiencing is the painful transition from “later” to “now.” as users, this change is almost invisible until it’s already happened—it’s like a rug we didn’t even know existed gets pulled out from under us.

the pre-IPO honeymoon phase is awesome as a user, because companies have no expectation of profit, only growth. if you can rely on VC money to stay afloat, your only concern is building a user base, not squeezing a profit out of them. and to do that, you offer cool shit at a loss: everything’s chocolate and flowers and quarterly reports about the number of signups you’re getting!

...until you reach a critical mass of users, VCs want to cash in, and to prepare for that IPO leadership starts thinking of ways to make the website (appear) profitable and implements a bunch of shit that makes users go “wait, what?”

I also touched on this earlier, but I want to reiterate a bit here: I think the myth of the benign non-monetized internet of yore is exactly that—a myth. what has changed are the specific market factors behind these websites, and their scale, and the means by which they attempt to monetize their services and/or make their services look attractive to investors, and so from a user perspective things feel worse because the specific ways we’re getting squeezed have evolved. maybe they are even worse, at least in the ways that matter. but I’m also increasingly less surprised when this occurs, because making money is and has always been the goal for all of these ventures, regardless of how they try to do so.

hot damn isn't that an open-ended question.

...er. yes. Yes, I think AO3 will have "a problem" at some point in "the future."

Which problem is up for debate.

I don't think AO3 is going to be taken down or even substantially hurt by lawsuits from media companies or authors who hate fanfic. I think the time for that was over 10 years ago; if Disney hated fanfic and thought it was illegal, they would've gone after AO3 before it was internationally famous with more than 5 million users. Before it had won a Hugo Award.

Doesn't mean I think a lawsuit isn't possible, and the current SCOTUS in the US is run by a pack of corporate shills, but... it's a hard stretch to get a copyright-creativity case to go that far, and even with such a court, the outcome wouldn't be guaranteed. And no media company wants to be the test case for a lawsuit that decides "actually yknow what? Fanfic is pretty much legal."

I think there will be more regions that block AO3, in one way or another. Not many places have China's control over the internet, but there are other blocks, like pestering Google and demanding they filter search results.

I think antis are going to continue to scream about AO3 allowing content they don't like, even if the term "anti' changes and they wind up calling themselves something else. I think this may create some kinds of problems, including with payment processors, depending on where and how they yell. I don't think any of that will shut down AO3 or change its policies.

The thing to keep in mind is: AO3 does not need to grow. AO3 is not a venture-capital company. It does not have ROR. It does not generate profits. It is not accountable to anyone but itself for its policies and activities. It was designed by a small pack of fans who decided "we're damn tired of being pushed off our fic archive websites, and even more tired of VC-backed things showing up and trying to fleece us for profits while simultaneously insisting to their mainstream stockholders that they don't approve of smut, that they dislike slash, that they think fanfic is copyright infringement. We need to own the servers and set our own policies."

AO3's going to face plenty of problems in the future. A lot of people do not like smut, or do not like some kinds of smut, and think it should be illegal. Or they think it should be restricted. Or at the very least, the people who host it, write it, and read it, should be ashamed, and if they're not, they need to be Taught A Lesson.

Repeat with: slash fanfic, RPF, fanworks based on children's shows, and fanfic in general.

A lot of people think AO3 is Doing Fandom Wrong, and some of those people are going to cause problems. Some of those people are probably government officials, so the problems are going to be big.

But I don't think any of them are going to succeed in shutting down AO3 (although accessing it may get more difficult from some parts of the world), and they're definitely not going to change the core policies.

AO3 was started by people who'd been watching the legal and cultural landscape around fanfic for decades. It's run today by people with the same kinds of experience, the same kinds of beliefs about fandom culture.

I am not worried about the future of AO3.

— Como achar png no Pinterest!!

Primeiro, é bom ressaltar que, tem duas formas de achar png's no Pinterest!

— Primeira forma!

A primeira forma é pesquisar por "x item png", vai aparecer recortadinho, porém, ao redor estará com um fundo branco, ou com o fundo de png transparente. Nessa situação, eu recomendaria pegar o com fundo branco (ou preto, ou cinza, dependendo da imagem varia o fundo), pois no Ibis Paint há uma ferramenta, chamada "varinha mágica", que utilizando ela no espaço de cor única você consegue apagar completamente o fundo, apenas tendo que ajustar em alguns cantos. O que se torna inviável com o fundo de de png (aquele quadriculado), pois além de complicar na hora de marcar para remover, fica marcado um pouco a beirada dos diversos quadrados.

Tem seu ponto positivo de conseguir ser mais específico no que você quer, assim achando com mais facilidade o que você quer específicamente. Porém, seu ponto negativo é que você tem mais trabalho, já que você mesmo precisa produzir o png, ainda sim tendo que recortar o fundo, mas nada muito trabalhoso.

Nota: Aqui já mostra ambos os fundos que aparecem, sendo recomendável o primeiro. E também que, os resultados, as vezes, aparecem melhor pesquisando em inglês.

— Segunda Forma!

Porém, essas packs png são mais difíceis de acharem itens específicos, pois elas, ou fazem uma enorme coletânea sem especificações (que inclusive, alguns liberam até apks, fontes, símbolos, há de tudo). Porém, há alguns que separam por "dark", "vintage", "soft", ou como: "doodles". São algumas coisas específicas demais, porém conforme você acha cada pack você compreende as divisões, e eles entregam bastante conteúdo para quem quer capar.

A primeira forma é pesquisar por "pack png", que aparecerá diversas imagens mostrando as pastas do drive. É só clicar na imagem que você quiser entrar para ver os png's, clicar novamente na imagem, ou clicar em "acessar", que você será redirecionado para o drive, onde lá você baixa as imagens.

Nota: Só mostrando rapidinho onde se clica cada coisa, inclusive, há imagens que não tem o acessar, porque são apenas prints soltos.

— O que eu recomendo?

Se há alguém que se importe com essa parte, então vamos lá:

Confesso que prefiro buscar os png's separadamente, e eu mesmo cortar o fundo. Motivo? Consigo achar o que eu exatamente quero, e o trabalho de apagar o fundo nem é tanto (e no final se transforma em satisfação)

— Imagens de fundo.

Não sei se já é óbvio, porém, eu continuo recomendando o Pinterest para imagens soltas, para não ficar tão ?? vou dar um exemplo.

A minha capa "rosas são as melhores", ou "a neve que lhe assola", ambas capas eu tirei o fundo do próprio Pinterest. Como o armário aberto, que tive que fazer uma junção de tudo, e ainda conseguir png's (no próprio Pinterest), ou como a casa da sana, que eu tive que pegar, janela, parede, fundo...

Falo isso, pois sei que o Deviant Art também recomenda alguns fundos, mas são pouquíssimos mesmo (o que mais tem é pack de photoshoot de idol, mas aí eu recomendo o Kpopping, que foi a malu que me apresentou, e caso não tiver no Kpopping, voltemos para o Pinterest, ou só ir até a conta oficial, ou de fãs, no twitter ou no instagram).

How did you know you were plural? (IF you feel comfortable saying, feel free to delete if not) Because I've been wondering if I may be lately, it would explain a lot about growing up

Well we didn't, when this all started out! This is a story we don't all have access to the memories for so we'll try to get through this quickly

When this started, DID wasn't at all on our radar, we knew about it but "obviously I don't have that, I don't have memory blackouts and no ones told me I act different" (we were already lowkey using we/us first person pronouns lol, "it just feels nice, doesn't have to mean anything"). But this actually started with our depersonalization, derealization, and general dissociation acting up! They were symptoms we'd been familiar with for a long time, but last year, being the actual worst year of our life, it was Extra Bad. So we were taking comfort in memes, like we tend to do when we're stressed about conditions we have, and its kinda hard to find dissociation memes without DID and OSDD popping up, and some things (not all things, only a small handful out of the lot) sounded familiar. We still didn't agree tho, so we looked into DID diagnostic questionnaires and gave them a shot. Our scores weren't very singlet of us to get.

Still, we doubted, so we looked into how systems could open up communication. We started a notebook of just general things we were feeling at that moment, things like preferences and opinions, the special interest we were "having a phase of" at the time, any strong emotions that stood out, etc (we bought a MASSIVE pack of coloured gel pens and used whatever colour/s stood out to us for each entry, a very helpful idea for an apparently very colour focused system). At first these entries were numbered, but it very much did not take long for them to be named (though some liked their numbers and refused to give an actual name, Sixteen is literally named Sixteen because of this), and after a little while more direct chatter started up, first in the notebook and then in our head. It became easier and easier to tell when our thoughts weren't from one specific person too. (We lost all this progress when the worst of last year reached its peak, so we need to start over now)

And yeah, by the time the names were happening it was pretty obvious what was going on, sure we had our self-fakeclaim moments but for the most part we were over our denial (some of us were more ready than others)

(Also, quick tip, the "inner worlds" and internal talking? Don't force it. When we tried to take a peak in the early days it was immediately shut down with a panic attack, our gatekeeper didn't want our host to see so the memories of it are hidden from them and access like this is firmly shut down. Just do what feels right, not what other systems are talking about, okay? VC, our host, still doesn't know anything about our inner world, and that's okay)

The VIEVECOR CITY GAZETTE (VCG) is Vievecor City’s supernaturals-only news bulletin. It is a publication that has been magically tailored by the city’s techno-pagans to keep the supernatural population of Vievecor City up to date with what is going on in the city. These publications are usually sent out at the beginning of each month in the form of highly encrypted e-mail blasts that will be automatically deleted from an inbox after 48hours.

The team at VCG would like to wish the supernatural community a very Happy New Year!

This year’s Christmas celebrations were much needed! The supernatural community would like to thank the deities for hosting a ski holiday for everyone to spread the festive cheer and to give the community a much needed break after the past year.

There have been no new attacks by the Hunters of Artemis against the community which is a blessing for all. In the meantime, the Council would like to thank everyone for showing a sense of solidarity in the face of such adversity.

The Golden Rule still needs to be upheld and is even more important now than ever.

This month’s full moon will be at its peak on the night of January 25th. It will last for three nights and the Lycaon pack has opened the forests of Chissob Hills to all other packs and lone wolves who need space to run. The supernatural community is strongly encouraged to not go near the Chissob Hills forests during this month’s full moon.

RUMOUR HAS IT…

As the year wound down, the number of attacks against the supernatural community have dwindled down to nothing, but there are still those in the supernatural community has not yet forgotten that there are humans hunting them. While the numbers who remain vigilant have decreased in the last 2 months, there is still a core group of supernaturals who are hell-bent on finding these hunters of Artemis to eradicate them. (OOC: Characters who wish to be part of this core group should let the admin know and their names will be included here. They are then encouraged to plot amongst themselves what they have been doing to find these hunters up until now. Current core group members: @judassamara)

Ever since the Artemis attacks, the species elders have been debating bringing this matter up to the supernatural communities outside of Vievecor City. After all, supernaturals exist all over the world and it would be prudent to warn everyone of what the residents on this island have experienced. (OOC: Elder characters will be able to give their input on this matter in the VC Discord soon.)

first of all i think the difference in their demeanors is so facking funny VSNFJWKDN samatoki who is always >:( and hakuno who is always :| ? i also love the difference in their speech patterns too because hakuno's almost way too formal and polite whereas samatoki is.... -insert clip of him saying yo yo my fellow chicks and d*cks from yokohama here- yknow ?! also i see that he's quick to start fights and hakuno is against unnecessary violence so methinks she would 🙏 try to stop him!! it's not just all hakuno scolding tho okok.... if he's hurt or bleeding she'd offer him an ice pack or handkerchief and maybe just sit in silence with him for a while

The Dragonheart Pack

The Dragonheart pack, also known as simply the Dragonhearts, formed a little over two years ago. They originally belonged to the Jordfirar pack, situated in the northern reaches of Norway and headed by Thorsiffe’s eldest sister, Yrsa. Not wishing to overthrow her, Thorsiffe claimed the ancient right to go Viking, starting their own pack, or warband. Most of those who followed them were part of their friend group within the pack, those closest to Thorsiffe themself, all eager to see and explore the world at large.

They eventually settled on Vievecor City, hoping the size of it and the number of supernatural beings within it would allow them to have adventures and earn their glory. There wasn’t much of a plan as to how they were planning on settling, but things worked themselves out. In a similar unworried fashion, the pack’s name was decided upon over drinks at the airport bar on their way over, derived from Thorsiffe’s epithet.

During their (for werewolves) relatively short time in Vievecor City, the Dragonhearts have established themselves as a brave, honorable, and open-hearted pack. However, they’ve also earned themselves the reputation of being brash, violent, and most other traits often associated with young wolves. Perhaps that was to be expected from a pack of young wolves who introduced themselves as a warband of Vikings. Conflicts have yet to get out of hand though, and have usually been started and simultaneously resolved through a small brawl or challenge to a duel.

Being the alpha who established the pack, Thorsiffe is its leader. Most of the time they ‘rule’ as a first amongst equals, letting all have their say and trusting matters to those responsible for them. However, they assume full control of the pack’s actions in case of conflict. Thorsiffe leads by example, and their pack follows them with great love and unyielding loyalty.

The Dragonheart pack consists of some fifteen members. Though they’ve established strong friendships with wolves from other packs and lone ones, they haven’t had any new additions during their time in VC. For a list of packmates, check out Dragonheart pack members.

Hailing from Norway, the Dragonheart pack has brought their own culture with them to VC. While belief in the old gods dwindled since their country’s conversion to Christianity, the Jordfirar pack they originally belonged to had kept to their ways. They still follow the Norse gods, mainly Odin, and they are what remains of his warrior-cult of berserkers. Below details some of the main differences in culture and beliefs.

Origin of werewolves The Jordfirar (and by extension the Dragonheart) pack believes that werewolves, either all or those of their ancestry depending on who you ask, are descended from Fenrir, specifically his son (or aspect, depending on who you ask) Hati, the wolf that chases the moon. The desire to hunt the moon itself is ingrained in their blood, and the more that is visible of it, the greater this call to violence becomes, strengthening the werewolves.

(Going) Viking While the Jordfirar’s succession happens the same as other werewolves, there is also the ancient tradition of going Viking. An alpha who wishes not to challenge the ruling leader, either out of love or fear, may instead choose to go Viking. Doing so means they will start their own pack, sometimes referred to as warband or raiding party to this day. Other members of the pack are then free to leave their old one and join the Viking pack. They must then leave and settle elsewhere; staying too close by is considered an insult. It is not uncommon for an alpha who went Viking to return later, to try and overthrow the pack leader, using the experience and strength they garnered during their time away.

Lawspeakers One omega in the pack, usually the eldest, will be anointed lawspeaker. A lawspeaker holds no authoritative power, but will mediate and, where necessary, pass judgment during conflicts. It is also their duty to remember all the laws of the pack and speak out when they are not upheld. They will often aid the alpha in negotiations of all sorts with external parties as well.

Holmgang A holmgang is a form of judicial duel, a leftover from Viking-age laws. Within the pack, it is used both to refer to the duels for leadership or autonomy that are common amongst werewolf packs, but also for judicial duels meant to settle disputes. In case it’s impossible to determine where fault lies, or a matter cannot be resolved for other reasons, a Lawspeaker might call for the two conflicting parties to participate in a Holmgang. It is then up to the parties to determine whether it shall be a duel to the death or not. Either way, two warriors shall be rowed to an island. If the fight be to the death, only one shall return.

Berserkergang The wolves of the Dragonheart pack view the berserker state of a werewolf near death as something sacred. They will emulate this fury, either through ritual and dance, a form of meditation, or the use of psychedelics. Though their physical capabilities don’t even come close to that of the “true” berserker state, they will lose themselves to their battle-trance and be more wolf than man for the duration. Typically, such practices and rituals are done during the night of the full moon, leading up to their transformation.

(I’m sure I’ve forgotten some details and will come up with more stuff for their culture and/or religion, so this list might get updated in the future.)

Sorry this answer is late! I didn't see the ask at the time and then had to find the original post! 😆

3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?

In most of them there is some aspect of hurt/comfort. Louis is almost always wanting to please and or protect Lestat. A detail that shows up so much in my fics is French. French words, French pronunciations or a character, Louis usually, speaking French. Often there is some kind of quote from the books that is in the fic, or inspired the fic. A lot of my fics are about some period of time that is just glossed over in the books.

7. Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of?

This is difficult. I don't know that I've ever done any world building in my VC fics. I tried to stick close to canon. And I actually used maps of New Orleans to make sure that if I had a character going somewhere in New Orleans, the streets are correct, and they lead to the right places.

Maybe that I tried to include Anne and Stan Rice in some of my fics to explain why her name is on the books and why she goes on book tours, to put her into the same world as the vampires.

Or possibly 1940s New York in Christmas in New York.

10. How do you decide what to write?

Usually when I was reading a book, I would come to a part that I would have questions about. Such as, what happened during that time, or what did the other character in this scene think and feel? The fics that are not covered by that were just a single idea I would have, and I would start writing to get everything in line to lead to this idea, or scene, then write what the idea/scene was, and then what it would cause the characters to do, and resolve the story.

20. If you wrote a prequel to [insert fic], what would it involve?

Since you wrote Walking Mojo, I assume that's the fic you'd like me to use for this and the next question.

The prequel to Walking Mojo would involve Louis going to visit Lestat who is packing and him tossing his key to Louis and assuming he will watch Mojo, because Lestat needs him to. Then Mojo and Louis getting to know each other. Louis reading books or doing research on the computer about what a dog needs ie. exersise, socialization, plenty of fresh water, etc. And figuring out how to give Mojo these things.

22. Who is your favorite character in Walking Mojo and why?

Empires smp s1 as vanguard G clans (Undergrove)

disclaimer: super long post but if you wanna waste some time and read about stuff you may have no clue about step right in!

you guys already know the drill at this point. Ill be turning the empires smp season 1 empires into clans for vanguard g and ill be explaining the concepts and reasoning for the type of playstyle I have decided to give each empires.

Undergrove Structure Deck: Lone Wanderer

The Undergrove is a pretty cool empire in my opinion and the story that shrub as a character went through really help to drive the entire collective plot of empires s1 and that is incredible. So my goal going into the making if the undergrove and their playstyle revolves heavily around the vibe of this kingdom but more importantly the implication and story that e!shubble went through. Undergrove as an empire seems to me like a less technologically advanced kingdom with more fous on agriculture side of thing while also capturing that small town vibe that is so adorable. With that all said here are some stuff i wanna try and capture in this empire's playstyle; the idea of loneliness and isolation, a focus on beasts, a certain amount of compatibility with other empires, the image of summoning creatures that aid you in combat and all that.

Undergrove to me seems like the sort of empire that would never want to engage in warfare, one part due to just their peaceful nature but the other due to their lack of military force. Now this is of course with the assumption that the undergrove actually has citizens and villagers, which is definitely one view of this empire. But in this look at the undergrove i wanted to portray and view the undergrove as if it was just shrub as the sole inhabitant of this kingdom. I think this lends itself more to that idea of isolation and the whole story arc that shrub went through with her backstory and (SPOILERS) how she chose to eventually leave her kingdom and wander with her pack of wolves instead. I think that this more fun overall because it provides some interesting contrast between the undergrove and the other empires, so thats what i went with!

In terms of playstyle i want this deck to really home in on swarming the battlefield with a bunch of beasts and letting out an onslaught of attacks. However, the sacrifice for this ability to call forth aid out of the blue is that these allies that the deck call will more than not disappear once they've completed their deed. This caveat is here to conjure the idea of shrub being lonely and left behind, how she seems to be the only one facing her threats. In series examples of this are occasions such as(SPOILER); her first encounter with xornoth and how she was just running from him without a care for her kingdom because she didnt have anything to lose from that kingdom, shrub and the raid where she was trying to defend her only villager but failed to do so leaving her alone once more, and lastly that time when she was face to face with xornoth and he slayed her pack resulting in that scene that really awakened her wolf spirit.

Key word = "Wander" cards that activates abilities with this trait causes them and/or another rearguard to be returned to the bottom of the deck at the end of that turn.

The Mysterious Wolf Spirit

Grade 4, +15000 power

Ok lets look at the strength of this deck. Now first of all its super good at calling forth a bunch of rearguards which means that unlike some other deck the undergrove dont have to invest their hands into making a serviceable board state. this also gives them some extra cards in hand to really put into defending themselves during the opponents turn while all their rearguards are gone due to the "wander" key word. In addition to this this empire also has a good amount of cards that help you to power up your own units to hit for harder as well as cards that gives them more waves of attacks, this is mostly done by the grade 4 shrub but that alone with the massive amount of cards that can summon rearguards all by themselves means that the deck and deliver continuous barrage of attacks.

Lets now get to the weakness. While this deck processes a good amount of offensive cards that allows them to really be aggressive with their combat style, all their cards can be really expensive to pay for. Cards like lord of the moon, the woodpecker, and some other cards use counterblasts constantly, and because your main game plan to try and chain a bunch of summon while powering up your rearguards the process will leave you with little resources to work with the following round. Another weakness of this empire is how luck base it can be. Because the entire deck relies on the player summoning the correct card to chain their effect from just the top 3 cards of their deck, more than not they will miss resulting in less than desirable and lackluster plays.

however that will have to do it for this post. In general i think this came out pretty good and the key word seems pretty clean to me. For the next empire im doing im hoping to get Mezalea done and explore a pretty gimmicky playstyle.

so, before i get into it, in accordance with ncuniverse stanon, all my stans meet kyle and are immediately madly in love with him.

the difference between pep!stan and rm!ravenstan is that pep!stan could not distinguish the difference between platonic/romantic love so stan basically just thought it was completely normal to be unhealthily obsessed with your best friend/think everything about him was perfect...and also he dated wendy on and off his whole life which made things...v complicated.

( wendy is in rm, but wendy is NOT from south park, so that OG canon doesn't exist in rm, but she's definitely coming into play soon and i mention her in the next chapter in a small way so ;) keep your eyes peeled for that my friends )

but, uh...oh my god. so rm!stan helped kyle move in and was...immediately In Love with him and KNEW that. in(stan)taneously. it was...On Sight. *stan vc* Wowza

like kyle broflovski tapped stan on the shoulder, hit him in the face with that New Jersey accent and it was OVER for stan. like the skies opened up the angels were singing he was like that is my husband dhsksk heeeelp it was also extremely obvious to literally every single person in south park that stan was madly in love with kyle…

like obvious to the point where when little stan was in the hospital after the hockey puck incident

he was largely unresponsive and pretty miserable, but kyle came in with flowers and soup to say thank u ( he was stuttering the whole time my god he was so nervous ) and stan smiled so hard and got so excited to see kyle that he ripped...all his stitches open and had to have his jaw REWIRED shut....unbelievable....pack it up Gay Boy! that's right! i know what the fuck you are!!! ashdsad MAN!! RELAX!!!!!

also multiple people have brought it up to kyle and he is genuinely confused abt it bc his self confidence and body dysmorphia was so bad ( eric cartman i will fucking kill u ) that he cannot even fathom stan having a crush on him being Not a really cruel joke :( sigh

part of it is that all my stans are very conventionally attractive and frighteningly beautiful, which i think is so funny because to offset that i just make them soooo fucking gross that it is offputting slkdsa

BUT ANYWAYS! BACK TO STAN BEING BEAUTIFUL AND GROSS!

despite being gross...his eyes are too blue and pretty unfortunately so people are willing to let that go...he has pretty privilege help

and by age 11 stan had been asked out/proposed to like...over 22 times ( mostly cartman, die cartman )...all declined. he used to be really nice about it, but recently if cartman tries it and uses his deadname and the wrong pronouns stan just...looks at him blankly and is like "who?"

and then sees kyle come out of his honors english class with all his books and is immediately like all over him, chatting excitedly aw aw

the second gag is that rm!stan does not think kyle is in love with him but hes willing to be super best friends with him forever and never tell him if that means he can stay close to him...only wants him to b happy...even if its not with him....AAAAAa....i hate it here :'(((

with that in mind! sixth grade! cartmans mom was getting remarried to some really rich guy and cartman was flexing hard like "listen up peasants and poor people my mewm is marrying into royalty sluts!!"

and kyle was like...lmao "congrats on ur moms...what is it? eighth marriage? my family lost count after wedding gift number 5"

naturally this pissed cartman off and he was like "oh yeah, jewboy??? at least my mom got married!! actually my mom got married eight times and you??? you're nothing, you're disgusting!!! you'll be lucky if anyone pities you enough to marry you once!!! i bet by the time i've got grandkids, you'll be still be miserable and alone. choke, fatty : )"

kyle was unfortunately used to this behavior and was like whatever!! marriage is a social construct you idiot!!! and tried to play it off but stan Over Heard it and was MAD AS HELL! he took that shit HELLA PERSONAL!!!! he was like hell no absolutely the Fuck not, you trick ass bitch!

and hatched a stan plan

and that plan...naturally...was to propose to kyle. in an extra way.

( yes all my stans propose to my kyles in extraneous ways smh...dramatic bisexual boy behavior i am embarrassed )

( another small side bar, i think at this point in rm stan is...about as happy as he gets and i don't even feel bad about talking about this because i was going to mention it in kyles letter but i forgot...

so in rm stan had really really reaaaaally long hair like had never ever gotten a haircut and it was a large part of his gender dysphoria and stress for him...so as a birthday present...sharon cut his hair to about shoulder length ( which was...a big deal...ill go into it later ) but stan was SOOOOO HAPPY!!!! it was so :')))) he like started wearing his hair down and smiled so much he was so happy omg my son my son

also him and kyle went as coraline and wybie for hween it was so cute like...stan in the yellow raincoat and the boots...kyle in the iconic black and white fit...love them )

ANYWAYS! MIDDLE SCHOOL STANS PROPOSAL PLAN

so he spent 2-3 days, as is natural for my stans, doing a craft, getting something ready to give to kyle smh

and then texted him and was like "do u want to go to starks pond?" he also used !!! three exclamation points and the :'D face...gay ass...smh

they had a cute little picnic and the tiny ring box was burning a tiny hole in tiny stans pocket but he panicked...like he had a song and everything...he got too nervous help!!!!

stans last ditch effort was that he asked kyle to skip rocks with him and was like "dude!!! hang on ur shoes untied!!!!!! let me get it" ;)

and kyle was like "oh thanks bro--WHA " :O

bc...there is stan...on the bank of stark's pond...in all the rocks and mud and dirt and grass...with the stars out...and alll the fireflies flickering around like fairy dust...on one knee and...

he hollowed an acorn out :') and made a little rope hinge out of twine and stuff so it opened and closed....he also...painstakingly weaved pine needles into a tiny little ring perfect for kyles finger and hot glued a little fresca bottle cap on there

( when they met kyle asked him for a bottle opener for his fresca and stan opened it with a lighter and said 'I Am The Bottle Opener' which...yes is a Metal Boy Thing...also yes kyle was in love...also yes stan kept that bottle cap...wow )

in shop class he also engraved their intials on it...like on stans old bed....gross im crying so cute...ew ew ew

and stan was like!! "haha STUPID!!! you're wearing rainboots dumbass i cant believe u fell for that" ( while literally proposing )

and kyle was panicked and freaking out like "w-what are you doing?!?!?!?"

and stan was like "what does it look like dummy shdlka"

and kyle was like fully in shock like

"aRE YOU PROPOSING TO ME??????????!!!!?!?!?!?!?"

and stan was like "well i'm Trying to! Jeez! but it’s gonna take forever if you keep INTERRUPTING! ME!" unserious omg and is like "look, i couldn't ask you to the dance, so i decided to do the next best thing…which was to ask you to marry me!!! so what do u say?"

poor kyle he was not ready for this, this is like an insane dream he's having...yes he's had this dream before...they were older in it tho...yes stan looked like raven...i dont want to talk abt it

hes like

kyle is like "Nononono, i mean like...were in MIDDLE SCHOOL, stan!!! Adults get married and Have kids!!! Kids Do Not get married!!! also why -- why the hell would you want to marry Me of all people???"

he is sweating and shaking oh my god also stan is like wow so cute but also hes also....really nervous bc hes worried this is going Badly...poor stan...his luck with proposals going smooth is...rip

and stan is like "first off all Mr Technical! we are Preteens!!! and people say you're supposed to marry your favorite person in the world!!!! and YOURE my favorite person in the world!!! so why wouldnt i marry you if you're my super best friend???? but…”

*stan sigh*

stan, still freezing to death, soaked to the bone is like

"but like...you're going to get into fancy schools and meet lots of rich smart successful people...so if you find someone else that you actually really love, that...that's...o-okay...you can just give everything back to me and wash your hands of it...just let me know which one haha! i guess...that's a little confusing? sorry! shdslahd whew!"

but kyle is still processing like "temporar...but what if you find someone else YOU love and want to be with instead???"

and stan just smiles and is like "i wont"

and kyle is like "stan!!! be seroius!!!!"

and stan is like "i Am being serious. I Wont."

( AAAAA MY STAN IS A ONE MAN MAN WHAT CAN I SAY! he is being so FR too like…im crying ur honor )

and hes like "okay but is that a yes....my legs are going numb"

and kyle is like "yes of-of course, but sta--"

and stan is like "SWWWWWWWEEEEET!" and slides the ring on kyles finger and gives him the box and then his watch beeps and hes like!!! "oh shit i gotta go catch that last bus or my mom will kill me!"

but before he goes he gives kyle a kiss on the forehead and is like "see you later, kyle marsh!!!"

and kyle is like "b-bye!!! s-stan broflovski!!!"

stan rings the bell on his bike at him and disappears into the night and kyle is just sitting there...looking at his hand...

A Temporaried Man

( also present kyle...does look at it often in The Stan Box...aka stans open casket aka the stuff they didnt bury with him rip...

also stan made that little ring so it fit on a much larger middle school kyles ring finger but...present kyle can wear it on his PINKY...as an Adult...so unfortunately...i think that says a lot about how kyle is doing with his...ed...unfortunately...im sad )

but yeah!!! my sons are married!!! anyways!!!! style world domination!

ok wait Actually i think before he left little stan was like
