Tailoring morphology symmetry of bismuth vanadate photocatalysts for efficient charge separation
In a study published in the journal Science China Chemistry and led by Prof. Rengui Li (State Key Laboratory of Catalysis, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences), a distinct charge separation difference has been found via rationally tailoring the morphology symmetry of BiVO4 photocatalyst. Interestingly, for octahedral BiVO4 crystals, photogenerated electrons and holes can be separated between edges and quasi-equivalent facets. However, as for truncated octahedral BiVO4, photogenerated electrons tend to transfer to {010} facets while photogenerated holes prefer to accumulate on {120} facets, thus realizing the spatial separation of photogenerated charges between different facets. Morphology tailoring of BiVO4 crystals leads to a significantly improved photogenerated charge separation efficiency and photocatalytic water oxidation activity. The built-in electric field for driving the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes is considered to be modulated by tuning the morphology symmetry of BiVO4 crystals.

Holding your hand: Yuto Edition
Yuto reaches for your hand with hesitance—even now that you're together—as if he's afraid to let himself touch you... Afraid his cool skin might make you flinch away instinctively. He knows you don't mind, but it's a tough habit to break. You find it cute though, how his pinky finger interlocks with yours in quiet silence, wordlessly seeking your consent. You don't need to look at him to know his gaze is averted, the tips of his ears flushed a soft pink, peaking out from his long white hair. You slip your hand into his, intertwining your fingers with a gentle squeeze. He returns your gesture with a firmer grip, the way you'd hold on to something precious you dare not lose.
Holding your hand: Sol Edition
Sol's hand finds yours with such natural confidence. His palm is rough from constant time spent outdoors, and his lightly calloused thumb runs over the back of your hand unconsciously even as he chatters at you about something irrelevant. He tugs you along like an excited kid, his grip sometimes loosening in his excitement to show you things. Bismuth enjoys nail art, makeup and journaling. She served as a pharmacist in a small town after her graduation. Now she works under Lead in Elementia, who is training her as his replacement. She'll prepare warm drinks and soup for her colleagues at work, and bring medication to her friends who experience stomach discomfort.
Being sensitive and imaginative, she often feels lonely, and struggles to be understood. She visits cafe and shops in quiet, quaint towns in search for the answer to her longing and nostalgia. Bismuth wrote letters to Tin when he was studying abroad, filled with her warm wishes and doodles. In a bitter winter, when Tin was left alone in the Northern Land, he was comforted by Bismuth's letters.
Bismuth is close to Astatine. When they first met in Elementia, she felt such nostalgia - they must've met before, or they must've dreamt of each other before. Bismuth spends time with Astatine whenever she visits Elementia, enjoying each other's quiet presence.

Bismuth oxychloride (pearl white) is used in cosmetics, while bismuth vanadate is used as a yellow pigment. Due to its high density and low toxicity, bismuth is used as replacement for lead.
Bismuth subsalicylate is a medication used to treat temporary discomfort of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract.
Addition of bismuth & antimony to tin can prevent phase change to grey tin. Astatine-211 is produced by bombarding Bi-209 target with alpha particles.

How a transparent conductor responds to strain
Liquid crystal displays, touchscreens, and many solar cells rely on thin-film crystalline materials that are both electrically conductive and optically transparent. But the material most widely used in these applications, indium tin oxide (ITO), is brittle and susceptible to cracking. Researchers seeking alternatives have set their sights on strontium vanadate (SrVO3), a material that ticks all the boxes for a transparent conductor. In a study published in The European Physical Journal B, Debolina Misra, of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Kancheepuram, India, and her colleagues now calculate how SrVO3's optical and electron transport properties vary in response to strain. Their simulations provide a detailed mechanism for tuning these properties to optimize the material's utility in different devices and applications.
