The Feral One • Epilogue
Finnick x Y/N
Series Masterlist Link
Prequel is coming in a few months! I haven’t made a Taglist yet and probably won’t start one till I’m closer to publishing. I’ll make a post tagging this series’ Taglist when I’m starting the next one.
Content Warnings - Mentions of fertility issues/miscarriage; death; the end of this series (don’t worry it’s a good ending imo)
Tumblr media
Dear Brielle,
A lot has happened in seventeen years. I’ve now lived half of my life without you, mom, and dad. I’ve been thinking about you a lot so my husband Finnick (yes that Finnick lol) said I should write you a letter of all the things I wanted to tell you but never could.
A little over ten years ago we killed President Snow. The districts rebelled and won. The war was brutal and there were times I nearly died, but Finnick pulled me through.
We got married a year later. We never really did the whole dating thing, our friendship just evolved into a beautiful romance overnight. He was there for me after you left and he has been here ever since.
The years since the war have not been easy. I’ve had bouts of seizures that leave me bedridden and ill for days. The doctors said my condition should be worse so I should be grateful. Countless medications and treatments have made slight improvements to my health but the pain will always be there.
Two years after our wedding we almost hit our breaking point. Finnick and I had been trying to start a family for over a year but nothing was working. It was the most frustrating experience of my life post-war and I do not wish those struggles on anyone.
Three years after our wedding, Mags passed of old age. Although we were sad, we were all glad she got to live out her last few years in a free Panem. Johanna decided to move in with Annie afterwards so she wouldn’t be alone. We are still neighbors to this day.
Four years after our wedding, I got pregnant, only to lose the baby a few months in due to a bad seizure. This was Finnick and I’s lowest point to date.
It’s now been a bit over 9 years since I married the love of my life and the father of my child. We were finally blessed with a baby boy, Neptune, 4 years ago today. He is everything I could have asked for in a child; rambunctious, kind, and adventurous. He looks just like his father but acts like his mother.
Two years ago, Neptune’s best friend arrived in District 4. Annie and Johanna adopted a little girl, Jodie, from District 7. Neptune and her do EVERYTHING together. Finnick keeps joking that we should build a tunnel between our two houses so the kids can hang out all the time.
All in all, it’s been a very painful 34 years of existence. Part of me is glad you didn’t have to witness what happened. The other part of me still hopes you’re out there, even though I know you aren’t. I hope that wherever you are, you’re at peace.
Love, your dear sister,
Y/N

Merthur ao3 recs
The trouble with Daisies 23.4k words
Merlin is just settling into his new role as Court Sorcerer and trying to figure out where he's exactly standing with Arthur when he finds himself adopting a dog completely by accident.
A dog who seems to hate the king with a burning passion.
Arthur is far from amused.
---
The moon stays warped in silence 12.6k words
"What is wrong with me Ma?" asks little Merlin his mother. "What is wrong with me?" asks Arthur Pendragon to the moon. About monsters and their hearts and how they love life so much that it hurts.
---
Little ones 14.5k words
“Did you just say you found two children in Arthur’s bed, Merlin?” Gaius gave him The eyebrow. Or, when two children who look weirdly similar to Merlin and Arthur appear in the prince's chambers, they have to find out where they came from. In which secrets get revealed, families founded and chaos ensues!
---
Sunny in Camelot 14.6k words
"Merlin," Uther says, "For your alleged crimes, I would normally sentence you to death by fire. But, because my son has requested it… I have granted you a fair trial. All witnesses and involved parties shall state their cases, and then a verdict will be reached. Is this understood?"
"Yes sire."
"Now you will each tell me, in your own account, what on earth happened this week."
"Your majesty, it all began Tuesday…"
---
The Hunt for Red Emrys 27.9k words
King Arthur sets out to keep his promise to the spirit of the Druid boy by repealing his father's ban on magic. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, for reasons including but not limited to the following:
(1) He can't change the law until he understands magic better, but no sorcerer is willing to explain magic to him until he changes the law;
(2) The sorcerers all have some strange obsession with Merlin, which is awakening all sorts of feelings in Arthur that he really doesn't fancy examining too closely;
(3) He is starting to feel like the butt of some Druid-population-wide inside joke involving the mysterious phenomenon called Emrys; and
(4) Oh yeah, Morgana is still trying to kill him.
Thus he embarks on a journey of discovery, diplomacy, accountability, and self-improvement, and maybe even falls in love along the way.
---
Forgotten Memories 8k words
Relying on pure luck and Merlin’s inexistent ability to keep a secret was not working any longer. So, Merlin figured better to be prepared and memorized a spell that could erase short-term memories. Honestly, he’d meant it as an emergency protocol, he had no idea how he’d become so careless that he needed it so often. It wasn’t his fault Arthur seemed to be paying way too much attention to him lately. Look, Merlin was just trying to survive while protecting his prince, he hadn’t done anything to deserve all this stress!
Or the 5 times Merlin erased Arthur’s memory of his magic and the 1 time he let him remember.
---
The Laughter From the Next Room 24.5k words
A small ball hovered in her hand, shining with a silver-blue light. It floated there, getting brighter and brighter before dimming again. Wisps of cloud swirled at its center. It was pure magic. And the breath was stolen from Arthur’s lungs. “I thought you’d recognize it. He said it was warm. He said it reminded him of home.”
It has been one year since Merlin's death when Arthur meets Morgana on the battlefield. Somehow, between all the guilt and shame, he discovers that his sister knew Merlin better than he ever did - and ever would.
^^
( actually one of the best fics i have ever read, and it made me sob and ugly cry, my god!)

i’ve decided i love druid prince merlin
druid prince merlin au where arthur is sent by uther as a sort of diplomat to establish contact with the druid tribe/kingdom because they’re trying to broker a peace treaty (*uther shudders*) and uther won’t send morgana (even though he SHOULD father why are you sending ARTHUR he’s going to cause an INCIDENT—) because he doesn’t want her interacting with the evil magic users (PEACE TREATY, uther, PEACE. TREATY.) but also won’t go himself so. obviously just send arthur because he *checks notes* “needs experience interacting with foreign diplomats without uther over his shoulder” (yes good that’ll work (it’s not because uther is scared of the druids IT’S NOT)) but arthur like jumps at the chance because YES he will prove himself to his father he can do it!!! but anyway so he gets there and the druid diplomat that meets him (it’s probably iseldir let’s be real) is like “oh hello prince arthur :) the prince is still in magic training with the younger druids he’ll be along shortly” and arthur, realizing his father is not there and he can get away with being A Little Bit Sneaky, is like “can. can i watch the magic training. just for a little bit. to show camelot’s improved attitude towards magic, of course.” and the diplomat is like “of course! prince emrys will be pleased by your interest, right this way!” and he’s led to an open area where the younger druids (varied ages, probably like 8-12 i would say) are learning some more complex visual magic, like light refraction (RAINBOWS) and conjuring images out of flames and such and arthur’s eyes IMMEDIATELY land on merlin and his first thought is “oh my god he’s pretty” and then he watches merlin create a MASSIVE COLUMN OF FIRE and then immediately start laughing at the druid instructor he’s startled and his second thought is “oh my god he’s feral” and there’s probably like a “political marriage” plot in here somewhere BUT YEAH druid prince merlin :)

Merlin/Merthur Fic Rec
The part no one cares about: Did I take almost a year off? Yes. No big reason why, just got like crazy busy and kinda forgot this blog existed. But I found out that one of my old Merlin lists had only privated works on it and since I recently got back into Merlin, I decided to make an updated one :)
The part everyone cares about:
take me up, cast me away
In which Merlin has a selective understanding of the term banishment, Arthur needs to lock his doors, and neither of them are half as good at mending themselves as they were at breaking in the first place.
what is this feeling
“Get out of my sight, and don’t come back until you can prove to me why I should allow you to remain in my service.”
Merlin stares at Arthur, confused. His tone was ominous, and it certainly sounded like a threat, but Merlin can’t quite work out what part is supposed to have him shaking in his boots. He’s halfway back to Gauis’ chambers when it dawns on him: Arthur actually thinks this stupid, degrading job is something he would be willing to fight for - as though Merlin’s life wouldn’t be complete without the honor of scrubbing the sheets Arthur manages to soil on a disturbingly regular basis.
In which it takes Merlin a bit longer to warm up to Arthur than it does in canon, but he gets there in the end.
Don't Lose My Number
“Merlin,” comes Arthur’s voice when he picks up the phone, “the Micro Wave is beeping again.”
Awake
King Arthur sleeps in Avalon, waiting to return at the hour of Albion's greatest need. But once a year he awakes and spends a single day with Merlin, who will never, ever leave him.
Strike of Lightning
Uther's commandment was very simple: If there should come a day when Arthur met his soulmate, he would drive a sword through their chest and kill them on sight.
A Study in Natural Philosophy
It wasn't all that unusual for people to hide their daemons; Merlin, however, seems to be taking it a little far.
to the world that never let you be
When Arthur notices the scars on Merlin, he sets off to find out why a servant of all people has such marks and discovers that Merlin might not be all that he seems.
to the point of fear
If the king is so concerned about Merlin,” he asks, looking at Leon, “Why does he always take him along on quests and patrols? It’s not necessary to bring a servant, and he’s clearly worried—”
Leon smiles. “We’ve often asked the same thing,” he says, and shrugs. “But I don’t think Merlin would allow himself to be left behind, so any argument is moot.”
“He could order him,” Mordred says.
“Merlin would just follow,” Leon says. “It’s easier to include him from the start. Sometimes, I think those two just need to be close to each other. Hard enough to keep them apart anyway, even at the beginning, when they were just constantly sniping at each other.”
When Mordred looks back, Arthur’s arm is around Merlin’s shoulder, and he is smiling broadly. Merlin’s eyes are bright and focused on Arthur, and his lips are tugged upwards, as if he can’t quite stop himself.
Merlin loves Arthur to the point of fear, Mordred realises
say you'll still be by my side
“Are you sure you can’t do a bit of magic?” Arthur asks. “I promise I won’t behead you for it.”
“Very reassuring,” Merlin says. “Truly, that’s an extreme act of mercy on your part, my Lord. It’s almost enough to convince me you aren’t a dollophead.”
“What use are you,” Arthur mutters.
Or:
The druids call Merlin Emrys. Arthur isn't sure why they think his hapless manservant is some sort of powerful sorcerer, but it's certainly a good way to improve Camelot's relationship with the druids. It's only a little bit of a lie, surely.
Except it turns out that it's not a lie at all.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Anne returned before dawn and had brought an undershirt and aketon, she was also kind enough to bring a basket with food so the three of you wouldn’t grow hungry.
The second she stepped out the barn to return to the abbey for the day, Squirrel was going through the contents of the basket, it looked like he had not eaten in quite some time.
You tried to dress Lancelot in the undershirt and when you lifted his left arm he emitted a faint sound “Lancelot? Can you hear me?”
His eyes remained shut but hope returned when he nodded very shallowly.
He brought a hand to the large bruise on his waist and winced in pain.
He had never felt so weak. Was he even awake? Was he even alive? Were you even really here?
You took hold of his hand, wishing there was something you could do to take the pain away “You’re safe now. The boy you helped, Squirrel, is here too.”
Squirrel had just stuffed his mouth with some berries and was still chewing when he went to sit close to the wounded Ash Man “He’s awake!”
The smile grew on your face “That’s good news, he’s improving.”
Lancelot could hear Percival too and picked up the Fey scent next to him now, he forced his eyes to open, the headache it brought had him draw a couple of deep breaths “Y/n? Where I am I?”
Hearing him speak your name had your heart take a leap of joy “It’s me.” you could barely contain your happiness “Sister Anne and I found the two of you in the woods. We brought you to a barn close to the abbey. She has sewed your wounds as best as she could.”
A barn? The abandoned one?
The blood loss caused him to shiver, he felt so cold.
You took the shivering as the prompt to take of your cloak and drape it over him to warm him up.
Your hand was embraced by his, he turned his head to look at Squirrel.
When he had felt himself grow weaker, he had feared for the boy’s safety if he were to succumb to his injuries “Percival, are you alright?”
Percival?
The boy grimaced at the sound of his real name being spoken “I’m alright. Are you?”
Lancelot’s attention turned to you, aiming the question at you “Am I?”
You didn’t dare answer it yet “You lost a lot of blood.”
He looked down at his chest, commenting “And clothes too.”
That cheeky comment made your cheeks burn “We had to treat your wounds, you twit.”
He would have smirked if it did not hurt to do so “Did Percival explain what happened?”
You gave a nod “You wanted to help him but were stopped by the Trinity Guard. Was it Wicklow?”
There was a bitter scoff at the mention of the name “The coward ran after I killed them.”
It came as no surprise that the Abbot was too much of a coward to do his own dirty work “Was my uncle not there to stop this?”
Lancelot shook his head “No. I waited until Father had left for Uther’s camp with most of the paladins before I went to free the boy from Brother Salt’s kitchens.”
You were disgusted by the news that they did not just intend to hurt this boy, but actually torture him “They send a child to Brother Salt?!?”
The disgust he had felt upon hearing that the boy would be tortured had pushed him to do what had lead him here.
Percival chimed in “That paladin scum had his throat cut by Lancelot.”
He would have spared you the details…
Your brow arched “I am gone for a little while and it all went to hell.”
Well, it was not far from the truth…
You feared for his future “And now you have fled with a Fey boy. I don’t know how my uncle will respond to it.”
The admission was close to a whisper “I will not return to Father. He is going down a path I cannot follow, a path I no longer believe in.”
The whisper was matched by you “I think you never believed in his cause, not in the way that he does.”
The doubts had always been there, your uncle’s actions stemmed from hatred and a hunger for power, his had originated from being manipulated from a young age into believing that killing the Fey would save their souls from evil.
He did not meet your eyes, it must still feel like he was betraying your uncle.
You gave his hand a squeeze “It will take time and it might not be easy, but you have the perfect opportunity to learn so much of your heritage now. From someone who knows what it is to be a Fey, and not from the words of those who don’t understand it.”
It took a moment for Squirrel to understand who that would be “Me?”
You nodded at the boy, who shared a look with Lancelot.
He started “I do not expect anything-”
Percival cut him off “Fine. But if he wants to learn, he needs to stay.”
He understood what the boy had meant, to remain by his side and with the Fey.
It was a reasonable request.
Lancelot did not know what the future would bring, only that he would not mind the boy being in it “I owe my life to your bravery, it would only be fair to spend the rest of it making sure that you are well.”
With the Green Knight gone, the young Fey knight had little friends left. Percival wondered why Lancelot would even wish to be one, had he forgotten how he’d cursed him out for hours that day he’d been captured by him?
Still… the tall oaf was brave enough to be one and perhaps he could convince him to gift him one of those swords he always carried with him…
And yet, it was hard for the boy to confess how he longed to have actually friends “I can take care of myself. But, I’ll let you stick around if that makes you feel better.”
His eyes narrowed at the boy, there was so much pride mixed with a fear of rejection mixed into that one sentence “Very well then.” then he asked “Is that food in that basket?”
The boy had clearly eaten something, there were purple stains around his mouth and chin.
Percival just nodded.
He had hoped the boy would understand why he was asking “Could you bring me something? Preferably soft if there is anything of the sorts.”
His chin hurt after receiving the heavy blow from a flail against it during the fight.
The boy looked back at him with suspicion but did as asked, taking his sweet time for it too.
Lancelot reached for your arm and felt the bangle you still wore “Wearing the tunic of the abbey I see…” his fingers moved the sleeve up until the mark was visible “You still have it…”
Instantly the mark’s silver pattern grew brighter and you jested “What? Did you expect I would cut a part of my skin off to remove it?”
He was dead serious “It would just grow back on a different place of your skin.”
What?
WHAT?
It wasn’t something you knew could happen “Even on my face?”
The expression on your face was what let the smile break through on his face “Of course.” his fingertips touched the mark “Do you want me to remove it?”
Quietly you shook your head and pulled your arm back.
His mouth was a little agape, he breathed the approval “Good.”
Then his attention fell on what was draped over his legs, eyes searching yours for confirmation on what he believed it was.
You pointed at it “It’s uh…my cloak.”
Those blue orbs remained on you for so long that it made you flustered.
He could barely hold back the lopsided smile “I suppose mine was still wet with blood.”
The reply came a bit too fast “It is.”
Percival returned to his side and offered him a piece of cheese and some of the softest part of the bread. When the items were handed to Lancelot, you put your attention on the boy.
You stood up and gestured for the boy to come closer “Let me look at those bruises, sweetling.”
Percival would have declined had you not spoken the term of endearment, shyly he came closer and lied “They don’t hurt.”
He could detect the lie from a mile away and took a bite from the food.
You gently touched the skin close to his blackened eye, right away the boy winced in pain “I’m going to put some ointment on them. Is that alright?”
It was barely a nod, it was enough for you to grab the ointment again and gently apply some to the bruises.
It was the first time he had seen the boy so quiet for so long. No witty remarks or jests. Nothing.
And just when Percival glanced in his direction, he tilted his head and saw the boy’s cheeks turn a little redder.
You noticed the redness on Percival’s cheeks and brought your hand to his forehead to feel his temperature “You’re a little red, I don’t think you have a fever. Maybe you’re tired?”
The boy quickly nodded “Yes.”
Lancelot had known you long enough to see that it wasn’t just the boy “So are you. Have you not slept well?”
You admitted to it “The mark kept me awake.”
He gestured to the swords out of his reach “Will you hand me those, please?”
Of course Percival was quicker, taking any chance he could get to touch the weapons that you and Anne had taken from his hands while traveling here.
The swords were returned to him and he told the boy “Go rest.”
Percival was less reluctant to sleep now that the Ash Man was conscious again and gave a nod before finding a place in the barn not far from him to sleep.
It was close to sounding like an order “You too, y/n.”
The protest came instantly “What? No. I can’t just sleep when you’re-”
He would not be swayed and spoke firmly “You look as if you have not slept in days. I will be on my feet again soon enough. Please, do not argue with me over this.”
Well, you were indeed very tired…
Your slight glare was met with the determination in his eyes, you would not win this Fine. I’ll rest for a while.”
You went to where the boy had found a comfortable spot and asked Percival “Want to share?”
The boy just shrugged his shoulders and you took it as a ‘yes’.
That ‘resting for a while’ turned into hours, the sun had already began to set by the time you woke again.
And when you opened your eyes and felt disoriented by the time that had passed, it took a second to realize Lancelot was on his feet already. He was holding his waist while taking slow careful steps around the barn. When you sat upright a little, your cloak slid down from your shoulders.
He had covered you and the boy with it…
Quietly you moved from under the cloak, making sure you did not wake the boy.
Lancelot saw you approach “I need to start walking again. It will be my only way of traveling until I find Goliath again.”
It dawned on you that you had not seen the horse at all when you’d went to find him “What happened to Goliath?”
It pained him to think of it “Someone stole him the first night, I was too injured to track the thieves down.”
You hoped to console him “Fear not. We’ll find him. Goliath is not the kind of horse that doesn’t draw attention.”
He sighed a little “That is what worries me. If they know he is my horse, they could take their anger out on him. It is the same with you and Percival. The Church will never stop hunting for me. And if it is known that you have helped me… I should not be here. I am endangering you and the Sister who helped me as well.”
It was difficult to see him so troubled, the weight of the world was on his shoulders again “I refuse to let fear rule my life, Lancelot. Please, don’t push me away, even if it were to protect me.”
The plea struck a chord, he reached for your arm and brought you closer, using you a little to keep his balance “I have made a terrible mess and I do not know how to solve it. The Church has excommunicated me and the Fey will never accept the monster that hunted them.”
You had heard his voice break… the sky in his eyes barely withheld the threatening rain.
Out of instinct, your arms wrapped around him protectively, an embrace meant to remind him that there was still someone who would be his home if he’d allow you to be.
The reciprocation came fast, he held on to you like it was the only safe thing in a world that was collapsing around him.
The tears you did not see, his face had found it’s comfort on your shoulder.
Your hand brushed along his back slowly, soothing him while he struggled to compose himself “That little boy over there would not be here now if you had not been so brave. A Fey boy has accepted you. Nothing is impossible, perhaps unlikely, but never impossible.”
You felt him lift his head, nose resting near your ear now.
The confession was a pained whisper “I fear what the future holds.”
Carefully you pried “Do you think there is room in it for me?”
His voice dropped lower “Does it feel like I wish to let you go?”
Your breath caught in your throat when he moved to stand flush against you.
His nose drifted from your temple to your cheek, your neck was cupped and your chin steered.
You hummed and coyly asked “What do you think you’re doing?”
It halted him, the confidence left and all that remained was the look of a man who believed he’d made a mistake.
The look in his eyes now could be compared to those of a young boy that had not a clue how to solve a puzzle put in front of him “I…”
Had his intention not been clear?
What had he done wrong?
You pinched some of your tunic between your fingers, tugging at it so it caught his attention “I am quite surprised to see that you would consider kissing a nun.”
He released you just a little bit “But… you are not a nun.”
Your brow arched “You can’t know that, it has been weeks.”
Lancelot kept his focus on your face, trying to spot the lie.
And then he realized.
The mark would not still be there if you were telling the truth.
He almost fell for it.
What came out of his mouth was a mixture of a scoff and a chuckle “I had almost forgotten your antics.”
Your head tilted “Did the blows to your head erase them?”
Instantly his eyes narrowed and darkened, his own fingers gave the sleeve of your tunic a light tug “You have already unleashed chaos into a monastery. Spare the abbey.”
This time it was you who scoffed “Oh, please. They love me here. I knitted socks for every single one of the Sisters. And I am really good at selling flowers too.”
The pride flew from your words.
For a moment he said nothing, only grinned.
“What?”
“Socks?”
“Shut up.”
“I know you are not a nun.”
You challenged him “How?”
He took a breath, then fired his observations “No veil. No cross hanging around your neck. And-”
Suddenly your arm was in his grasp and it felt like the mark wished to crawl from your skin, through your sleeve and unto him.
Cockily he pointed out “-there is this.”
You both hated and loved how smug he could be “Fine. I’m not a nun. I can’t really seem to adjust to a life where I have to follow many rules.”
Lancelot did not let go and purposely taunted the mark for it’s inability to get past the fabric of your sleeve.
It sends a tingling up your arm and neck that was both ticklish and very pleasant.
You quietly squeaked at the growing sensation “Lancelot!”
The sound of it only made him pull you closer again by the arm and he flashed a smile “Neither of us are good at following the rules. If we were, we would not be here. And I would not be doing this.”
Your throat went dry when he slowly leaned in, you would not deny him again. Not when that tingle had warmed your whole body and made you feel so light and airy.
Just when you felt his hot breath tempt your lips, a loud yawn had the two of you breaking away from each other.
Percival was rubbing the sleep from his eyes “I’m starving.” another yawn “Where’s the basket?”
Your voice was unstable while you pointed at the basket “It’s over there.”
Lancelot saw the boy look him up and down while passing him, as if it finally clicked that he was on his feet again “I believe you have slept well.”
Percival was confused “What?”
You gently smacked against Lancelot’s arm “Don’t.”
He did not listen “I thought a wild animal had gotten into the barn, only to find the true origin of the continuous growling.”
Was he truly teasing a child for snoring?
You were quick to comfort the boy “Don’t listen to him, a lot of people snore. He’s just messing with you and-”
But little did you know how quick of wit the young Fey child could be as well…
Percival did not let the comment from the Ash Man slide “At least I don’t talk in my sleep.”
It was all the boy said before walking over to the basket with a grin on his face, it left the Ash Man speechless.
What?
What?
Surely this had been a jest by the boy? If not, how long had he been talking in his sleep?
Had he ever spilled his secrets to the paladins this way?
Your sympathy switched to Lancelot “I never heard anything.”
It was not a lie, that night he’d spend in the monastery with you, he had not said a word during sleep.
He could barely hide his anxiousness over it “Others could have.”
That boy had rattled him so easily…
Now it was him you tried to comfort “Don’t think too much about it. It is probably incoherent mumbling.”
He sincerely hoped it was…
The opening of the barn door drew both your attention, Anne walked in and shut the door again.
She kept a distance upon seeing Lancelot on his feet again “Brother. I am glad to see you are doing better.”
The spoken title made him cast his eyes to the ground “You must be Sister Anne. Am I correct to believe you are responsible for treating my injuries?”
Anne confirmed it while putting down the jug of water she had brought “I am. And yes. Although I am afraid I cannot help you more than I already have. I do not possess the experience of a healer.”
He waved away the modesty “You have done more than enough. For which, you have my gratitude.”
She gave a nod then gestured for you “Y/n, can I speak to you for a moment?”
You stepped towards her “Of course.”
Anne quietly informed you “The Abbess asked about you. I was able to divert her attention from your ‘illness’. I don’t know how long I can keep her from finding out that you’re not in the abbey.”
Lancelot was overhearing the conversation.
It would not be long before you would be in trouble too if things went on like this…
You put her at ease “I’ll try to come and do some of my chores tomorrow. It will lower suspicion.”
She questioned Lancelot’s health status “Do you think he is well enough to be left alone for a while?”
It was what worried you “I…I’m not sure.”
Lancelot decided to share his opinion “I shall be alright. Some more rest and I will be back to normal.”
You were far more concerned about his health than he was himself “Alright…”
For Anne, the matter was settled “Alright then. I’ll see you at the Abbey tomorrow. Try to be there at noon, I’ll smuggle you into the kitchen so you can help me there. We’ll be able to put some food aside for them again then.”
You gave a quick nod “You’re a saint.”
She waved that away “The Abbess would disagree.”
There was still something she was holding in her hands, it was covered in a piece of cloth and you pointed at it “What’s that?”
She tilted her head in the boy’s direction as an answer.
Anne walked over to Percival and handed him what she had stored into the cloth “For you.”
Percival of course accepted the unidentified gift, he folded the cloth open and found a slice of bread that smelled quite delicious “I don’t know what it is…”
She explained it to him “I baked it with some milk and eggs, then added some honey on top.”
That sounded tasty and the boy took a bite, his mouth was still full when he enthusiastically praised Sister Anne’s cooking “It’s delicious!”
It warmed your heart to see the child look so happy with it.
Lancelot cleared his throat and caught the boy’s attention, head tilting a little to get the message across.
Percival understood what was being told “Thank you!”
Anne let out a soft laugh “You’re very welcome.” she turned to you “I’ll be heading back now. Are you going to be alright for tonight?”
Your gaze sought Lancelot for the answer, he gave an encouraging nod “We’ll be alright. Thank you again, for everything.”
You didn’t let her leave before giving her a hug, she had a kind heart the size of a village.
She returned the hug “When I became a nun, I swore to help those who needed aid. I consider it my purpose.”
The embrace ended and Anne gave Lancelot a quick reminder to try and not rip the stitches, then she left the barn once more.
Percival returned to the place he’d been sleeping at and where the cloak still was, clearly he must not have gotten much sleep in a while, or perhaps he finally felt safe enough to do so.
The boy crawled under the cloak again, curling up to make himself nice and comfortable.
Lancelot returned to the bale of straw you had covered with the wool to sit, he lifted part of his undershirt to see how the stitches were holding up.
It was beyond your control that your eyes dropped to what was being bared.
Of course all that training and fighting had given him the physique that had your poor heart roll around in your rib cage as it tried to free itself from it’s cage.
It was when he winced in pain that you pulled in the reins of your wandering thoughts and went to his side.
He let the shirt fall back into place “I will never forget how it felt to be struck by a flail.”
The scars alone would remind him of it daily…
You plopped down to sit beside him “I know you want to get back on your feet again, but I don’t want you to hurt yourself by going to fast. They nearly killed you, no one will mind if you choose to rest.”
Even though he wished to rest, the worry kept him from doing so “There is no time to rest properly. They will be searching for me, it is only a matter of time before they come to the abbey and pass this barn. And I need to bring Percival back to his people.”
You stated the fact “Lancelot, you are part of his people…”
He buried his face in his hands “I was taught to forsake what I am.”
Your hand squeezed his shoulder to offer some encouragement “And that ended with you bringing along a Fey child. I’d say you have never truly forsaken the Fey.”
The jest fell “Who says it is not he who brought me along?”
It could be correct “Good point. Percival does look like the kind of boy who would acquire a dangerous pet and insist on keeping it.”
The side-eye he gave said it all “Pet?”
You ignored the slight smirk and proceeded to offer some advice even if it would be difficult to hear it “And believe it or not, I don’t think that boy will give you up without a fight. Besides, considering your previous occupation, I think you owe it to Percival and the Feys to find your way back to your people.”
The response was a stubborn one “Why would they want me? Other than to slaughter me?”
You let your gaze trail to a sleeping Percival, then back to him “Because they need you, I have seen you fight, Lancelot. This war has begun and it will know an end. If the Church eradicates the Fey, there is no hope left for all those children you have spared. Do you believe it will end with the last Fey? No. They will kill everything and everyone who will share a different view. The world as we know it will seize to exist and the freedom of the mind will too. Help them, before all is lost, you owe it to the Fey to try!”
It was close to a scolding, rightfully so.
There was a shaking breath and nod from him, he barely dared to look you in the eyes.
It seemed like he was willing to try, the praise fell before you could stop yourself “You’re off to a good start. Small steps will get you there too, you’re not alone.”
He looked past your shoulder to the sleeping boy while letting his hand snake around yours.
The comforting words were more than welcome.
Those weeping eyes remained fixed past your shoulder, he brought your hand to his chest, holding it to where his heart resided.
You knew he was being careful not to cross a boundary, weeks had passed, there was a child nearby.
It was understandable.
You asked “Is he asleep?”
He confirmed it “He is.”
You took his word on it, leaned forward slowly until you were able to place a kiss to his cheek “You should sleep. I will stay awake and wake you if anything is wrong.”
His hand was tightly clasped around yours now, blue orbs couldn’t resist darting down from yours to your lips.
The restraint he showed…
He breathed it out “Alright.”
With an approving nod, you withdrew your hand and stood up from the bale of straw.
You wondered if his heart was racing too…
This time you didn’t go and risk waking the boy, instead you went to sit against the straw Lancelot would rest on “Can I sit here?”
A hand found your shoulder and caressed it “Of course.”
It was hard not to respond to the touch, it was like a cat trying to claim attention “Try to sleep.”
He hummed and gave your shoulder a squeeze before letting go to lie down.
His movements were careful, mindful of the thin threads that held his skin together to heal “Are you comfortable there?”
Your shoulders shrugged “I’ll live.”
Should he ask for you to join him? Would it not raise questions from Percival?
Would you even want to?
His eyes were fixed on the roof, spotting more than one crack in it, but a hand wandered off on his own and still sought a physical connection with you “If I begin to talk in my sleep, wake me.”
A smirk was tugging at your mouth “Not a chance.”
His attention moved from the roof back to you “Interested in my deepest thoughts?”
Your reply was a perfect mixture of playfulness and flirtatious “I’m pretty sure I can guess some of them.”
He did not respond to that, it only further confirmed the guesses you made.
It was quiet for a while and you believed he’d fallen asleep.
But sleep had not yet claimed him and he voiced what was going through his mind “Father will have heard of what has happened by now.”
You could almost hear his thoughts in that moment “Do you hope he will defend you against the punishment of the Church?”
He dared not admit it, it pained him too much.
All that he had been to Father and the paladins was gone. The night he left with Percival, he knew he would have struck down anyone that would have tried to prevent it.
He had turned against them, betrayed them and killed Brother Salt. There was no going back.
And then there was you, still Father’s niece and as a traitor he would never be allowed near you again…
The silence continued and you looked over at him, he looked exhausted and haunted by the burdens forced to carry “I wish I could give you hope and say that my uncle would choose to defend you. But from what I have experienced with him and from what I have seen, I fear my uncle will only protect himself. And he might even sacrifice another to do so.”
It reminded him of what Father had said to him…
                                   ~“If I burn, I won’t burn alone.”~
It hurt him so to realize it had been true. He had served and risked his life countless times. With the love a son had for a father, to earn that same love in return.
His eyes fell shut, the pained admission followed “He will know I will try to come to see you and prevent it.”
You had already thought about it too “Perhaps. But I would like to see him try to prevent me from doing the same. I may be his niece, but I am not his to control and I will never be.”
You turned to sit on your knees, elbows on the straw to look at him.
Or maybe you were staring a little…
One eye opened and the cheeky smile that you had missed returned to his face.
Why did it feel like you were looking at him in childlike wonderment? He did love to be looked at in this way.
Your own soft smile was one only reserved for him “Sleep.”
There was something wicked present in that smile “Yes, ma’am.”
To avoid distracting him further, you laid your head down on your arms and simply let yourself relax while staying awake.
It must have made him feel more comfortable to sleep, as it wasn’t long before he drifted off.
The full moon shined it’s light through the cracks and into the barn.
There was no sign of sleep-talking coming from Lancelot as he slept, perhaps it only happened if he was under distress during the day beforehand.
You stood up from the ground, careful not to wake him.
Percival still slept soundly, looking quite content under that cloak of yours.
For two fearsome people, the two were rather adorable when they slept.
A soft sound coming from outside the barn drew your attention and you went to the door, creaking it open just a bit, enough to look outside.
You couldn’t believe your eyes when you saw the horse standing there, his horse “Goliath…”
How had he found it’s way here?!? Was the bond between a Fey rider and their horse so strong?
Quietly you walked out of the barn and towards the horse, with slow steps you neared “Don’t be frightened. Do you remember me?”
Lancelot would be so happy to see that his loyal friend had returned to him.
Goliath did not move when you reached for and took the reins.
And you did not move when you sensed someone standing behind you.
While pretending to pet Goliath’s flank, your hand slid to the axe that still sat secure on the side of the saddle.
You heard them come closer and grabbed the axe, spinning around with it to defend yourself against whoever thought it was wise to try and trick you.

Merlin S2E3, “The Nightmare Begins”
Okay so Morgana’s eyes have some the magic glow. This has totally not been foreshadowed for a whole season previously.
(On another note, by far the biggest inconsistency is where Gwen lives.)
OH SHE MADE THAT CANDLE LIGHT UP
So Uther is right about the way it happened, but wrong about the person. This is just Morgana. But I do love to see this episode it’s definitely one of the better ones (and I’m only 3 minutes in!)
For once I would’ve liked to see Merlin figure things out for himself.
Merlin and Morgana are parallels in SO MANY WAYS I LOVE IT SO MUCH THEY’RE MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER FOILS
Ohohoho he’s bringing flowers I can see how this could be misconstrued
Gwen and Morgana ARE friends. Better ones than Arthur and Merlin. I want to read a modern, high school AU of these four.
Katie McGrath is GLORIOUS. And Morgana is by far the best-written character.
The music in this episode!!!
The CGI definitely improved between S1 and S2.
Merlin establishing that he’s not interested in Morgana and being completely misbelieved is a feeling I can very strongly relate to. I feel you, Merlin.
I don’t ship them but they would have potential as a romantic couple. (Or just let them develop as besties who would kill for each other, that’s fine too.)
I LIVE for Merlin and Morgana interactions.
“I’d be lost without you, Gaius.” IT’S MY FAVOURITE FATHER/SON DUO SAYING THEIR LOVE FOR EACH OTHER I LOVE THEM
The music in this episode is once again great.
This is the guy who played Doctor Moon in Doctor Who, isn’t he?
MORDRED!!!! MY LITTLE GUY!
Uther was a good king (ish) at the start of S1 but as time is going on he is growing increasingly unreasonable and isolationist.
Telepathy is a curse, isn’t it?
Oh fuck wait he’s leading the knights to the druids isn’t he
Uther does care for Morgana like his daughter! She and Arthur are spiritual siblings confirmed.
The druids seem calm. I’m sorry that they’re about to get decimated.
Of all people on Camelot Merlin is definitely the one who understands the most.
The sudden change when the fog appears is really well-done, and the whole fog music is great.
AGLAIN NO
Times like these I do believe Uther considers Morgana like his daughter. Even if most of the time he doesn’t act like it.
“Merlin.” “My lady.” is giving me Gaius-talking-to-Nimueh vibes. M&M (ha) are by far my favourite duo and I’m so happy we get so much of them!!
Merlin being so happy begetting to talk about magic :) and seeing someone else be as enthusiastic about it as he is!!
Okay it definitely looks like they’re fucking. From Arthur’s POV.
“You can’t hide anything from me, Merlin.” well-
A HUG!!!! WE’RE GETTING A GAIUS/MERLIN HUG!! I love them so much they’re the best family duo
LOVED this episode.

✩ WEEKLY FIC ROUND-UP ✩
I decided to do another one of these because last time was fun.
Merlin
A Free Man of Camelot by PeaceHeather
After the incident with Edwin Muirden, Uther named Gaius a free man of Camelot. Less than a year later, he handed him over to the witchfinder. No more, thought Gaius. No more. The content we always wanted, Gaius giving Uther salt
Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Revel In Your Time by Thai_Tea_Addict
Sawada Tsunayoshi is born an Omega in a world that expects nothing from his dynamic except submission. Tsuna is many things – clumsy, dense, heir to a bloodline some people would like to keep secret – but it turns out ‘submissive’ is not one of them.
this fic was so very fun, sometimes omegas-are-discriminated-against can be overdone or grimdark to the point of grating but every once in a while you run across a fic that reminds you why the trope is so popular in the first place, this is one of those.
Please, be (one of) my fake partner by pheathers
A fun cracky little fic where Tsuna lies about being in a committed polyamorous relationship and then doubles down due to panic. Fake dating au my beloved.
Where is the power that made your pride? by Dissenter
Crack oneshot, Hibari takes over the world, Tsuna is an innocent bystander in this he swears.
Naruto
Fixing the cracks in the future, starting with the problems in the past by Justignoreme21
The fourth shinobi war was over, but there were no victors. None, expect for the sole man alive, Uzumaki Naruto. But he was never one to let his precious people down. He had promised them, each and every one of them, that their sacrifice would not be in vain. That he would put an end to Kaguya´s reign once and for all, no matter the cost. So if he has to abandon his life to travel to the past, a place unfamiliar to him, where only more death and problems await him, so be it. Because he is Naruto Uzumaki, and he will be damned if he doesn´t fix the things that went wrong. The only place for him to start is here, in the time where his ancestors lived. Even at the cost of his own happiness and sanity, he will put an end to the war and build a new found village from scratch.
I cannot fully express how much fun I had reading this fic
In a sea of time travel fix its this one stands out as incredibly fun incredibly well written and incredibly well paced. It’s still ongoing but I adore it.
Let's start this from the beginning by RedBlood_Moon
IT’S ANOTHER TIME TRAVEL FIX IT, this time starring Itachi, the saga of a genius working with half the canon information and a boat load of trauma is so deliciously interesting. Things don’t always turn out for the better but in other ways they’re much improved. I really dig this fic.
Back From the Future by Ameterasu53
Female Naruto gets stuck back in the past during the third war as a chibi, will child Naruto manage to fix the past to fix the future? Also she gets adopted by Jiraiya who’s the only one who knows. A very fun ongoing little fic
The Thousand-Armed Goddess of Mercy by AlilSilverfish
I normally can’t abide self inserts but this one is well written.
Follow the story of reincarnated doctor, Tsunade, as she grows up in Konohagakure when it still disdained medic nin as not fit for combat, and the connections she forges with the people of that time. Also watch her try to dismantle the human bomb that is her friend Orochimaru and his possible evil future.
Solid worldbuilding nice development, ongoing but one to keep an eye on.
Also, great title, Imma be real like I said I don’t usually like self insert so 99% of the reason for giving it a chance was the title.
Six Years Too Long by Strawhat_Pirate
The Fourth Hokage's body was never found, but they never suspected that was because he hadn't died.
Minato Namikaze wakes up six years after the devastating Kyuubi attack, alone in an overgrown clearing with not a scratch on him. Disoriented and confused, he does exactly what any father would do in this situation. He fights through the pain, gets up, and goes to find his son. He trudges through the pounding in his head and forces himself to move-- to go and find him, because that masked man was still out there, and Minato is willing to do anything to protect his little ball of sunshine. Needless to say, the blonde kage wasn't expecting so much time to have passed. Nor is he very impressed with the way the village has been treating his son all these years.
This fic contains so much sweetness and light. Also vindication, sweet, sweet vindication. I went looking for a Minato lives au and boy did I get to receive.
Harry Potter
disclaimer: Rowling is a mad terf but my hyperfixation over childhood characters I’m fond of, can exist separately to my dislike for her.
The Careful Touch vs. A Whack to the Head by Triscribe
Lucius never noticed. Narcissa would despair over his lack of awareness, but- she’d never seen anything amiss with Andromeda, either, in the months leading up to what was supposed to be her eldest sister’s marriage to a worthwhile pureblood scion. It came as a terrible, horrific shock when Andy instead eloped with a nameless muggleborn.
She would do what she could to lessen the shock of their son’s alliance with Harry Potter when the time came to inform Lucius. In the meanwhile, Narcissa held back on the temptation to smack him over the head with a newspaper.
Of Monsters and Men by Arkodian
Part three of the What Goes Around (Comes Around) series.
So continues the tale of the little slytherin!Harry who could, dudley gets a vendetta against Lockhart, Harry continues to give his hufflepuff-slytherin-gryffindor alliance of friends things to worry about and Sirius black breaks out of Prison a year early, the only question, does he remember the future that Harry does?
Harry Potter and the Engine of Change by viciousmouse
Part four of the Harry Potter and the Ticket Backwards series.
Harry continues to be cringe-dense but simultaneously badass mage in the making, great plot, fun seeing the triwiz go down in the midst of all the changes already made to the timeline and how Harry’s reactions and the reactions of others differ. Holding out for more Sirius content someday but honestly his bond with the weasley twins is really satisfying me right now. Ongoing and extremely carefully crafted fic, a privilege to read something someone’s put so much effort into creating. Every time it updates I’m like, damn, again? What a legend.
Danny Phantom
Mortified by Marsalias
This fic has such vivid worldbuilding and lore, also does a lot of really interesting things with its character dynamics and relationships, longfic, ongoing fic but still regularly updates, unputdownable fic.

September Book Reviews: Hawk of May by Gillian Bradshaw
Tumblr media
Picked this one up because I was trying to remember if this is the Bradshaw I violently disliked (it was.) Bradshaw is a good enough writer that reading this book wasn’t an unenjoyable experience, but I did manage to pin down what I disliked.
This is an early Gawain retelling, stretching from his childhood to joining the Round Table. Bradshaw’s background is history, and she integrates Arthur into the flow of history a lot better than most authors manage. For instance, Morgan and Morgause are Uther’s legitimate children, and Arthur is not only about ten years older than most interpretations place him, he’s Uther’s illegitimate son and warleader (pendragon). Bradshaw also makes the interesting choice of making Agravaine the eldest instead of Gawain, which does very different things to the sibling dynamic, especially since the only other Orkney brother is Mordred.
However. The thing I deeply disliked was Bradshaw’s choice to force the entire story into heavy-handed religious allegory. I expect a little christianity in my Arthuriana, especially around the Grail Quest. But Bradshaw shoves the entire story into a religious mold, where Morgause is a demon in the services of the Dark (satan, etc) while Gawain has a religious vision and meets Lugh (a kind of angel) and swears himself to the Light (god). Gawain gets a sword which is very pointedly cross-shaped, even.
The religious bits go beyond something I find personally distasteful and into damaging the narrative tension. For instance, Gawain goes magically from an awkward boy who never was very good at fighting to a man who can easily match most of the knights of the Round Table because he’s apparently granted these powers as a holy knight. This robs the reader of the excellent improvement arc Bradshaw could have written.
A story more suited to immensely tiresome Galahad than to Gawain. I won’t say it wasn’t good, since Bradshaw is an excellent writer. But it was very annoying.

Merlin Characters Getting Stressed
Merlin: Things at work are amazing. I used to hate it here, but now that my personal life is in shambles and the source of crushing amounts of stress, I love it here! I get here early, I stay here late, sometimes I even fall asleep at Arthur’s desk because I can’t stand the thought of going home and being alone with my thoughts!
Arthur: Things are so rough right now. I could really us a... you know what I’m trying to say. That thing where where you put your arms like this *makes hugging motion* except someone is right here *points at hugging spot*
Lancelot: To make sure I never go through this much stress again, I am making a detailed plan for my future. First thing on the plan: think of things to put on the plan.
Gwaine: Ugh... why do I have to deal with all this tedious crap now? Sure, I’ve been neglecting it and letting it come to a boil over the past five years, but c’mon! Really!
Leon: Uh... okay people. I thought we had a plan going into this but clearly we are not following the plan. Which is fine. I can roll with it. Who needs a plan? Not this guy! But it would have been nice for me to plan on there not being a plan before I came here planning on there being a plan!
Elyan: Time for me to organize my life! *two hours later* Time for me to burn down my life and start from scratch again!
Percival: *internally* Crap. My friend asked me to pick up some sweets for him. If I get him some that are creamy, will he think it’s because I don’t think he can handle the crunchy? But what if he actually can’t handle it and I get him the crunchy? How can I even ask him such a question at this point? If I was a good friend, I should just know what kind of sweets he likes! Our whole friendship could be ruined by this one mistake.
Gwen: *yelling* Oh, you think I’m stressed? NO! I’m not stressed. Why would you think of something so stupid? Just because I’m not my usual nice, bubbly self? Well guess what? That version of me is a chump. That version of me is dead.
Morgana: Okay, time to go out and get some drinks with my “friends” and act like a “normal person”.
Gaius: I know the stress is getting to me because my lacrimal glands are starting to leak.
Uther: Calm the fuck down?! Calm the fuck down?! I am calm. Look at me! I’m fucking calm!

Is there a character you find difficult to write? How do you feel like your sense of each character has changed over the course of writing them?
This is such an interesting ask I love yooouuuuuu!
Ok SO, I used to find writing basically all of the knights kind of difficult, bar Gwaine, just because NONE of them have as much screen time as they deserve (I was about to say "especially Elyan and Percival" but then realised it would also be "especially Leon and Lancelot and Gwaine and Mordred"😅). BUT it's gotten easier to write them as time goes on.
I always make a concerted effort to make sure all characters present speak in equal amounts, OR I try to give Elyan/Gwen more attention, 1)because they’re some of my faves, I have to admit, and 2)because, as much as it isn't as bad as in other fandoms, I do see POC fans talk about the racism sometimes (mostly about either stereotypes, or characters like Elyan and Gwen basically just being forgotten), and I want to combat that where I can.
I guess I just struggle more with characters I haven't written as much about, like Morgause, and background characters/characters that were only there for one or two episodes, like Kara/Daegel/Will etc. But whenever I struggle I go back to either various BBC Merlin compilations on tiktok/YouTube, or I just skim through episode transcripts to get a feel for things😅
My writing has definitely changed a lot, mostly in skill level lol, and structure; they went from bare-basics drafts, to almost fully fleshed out fics. Plus I slowly started adding characters didn’t used to write with. I never used to have Mordred (or Morgana, really) in most of my old things. Or Morgause or Uther. But that's clearly changed😁.
I definitely got better at writing people’s physical mannerisms, especially Morgana, Arthur, and Merlin, when I began to understand more the way I personally wanted to present them. Morgana with her cunningness, Merlin with his observation skills and ability to lie and think on the spot, Arthur’s habit of getting flustered with emotions, but being confident in his other abilities, etc.
Speech, I do think I’m better at, you’ll have to let me know. It always felt a bit clunky and forced when I first started writing, but I think the more I wrote, the more I got a handle on the register/tone/vocabulary that each character would use. Before, Merlin, Morgana, Uther, everyone, would always speak in the same way. Now, it’s a little easier to tell from the dialogue alone, the structure they use/the actual words they choose etc, who is speaking. Obviously it’s not perfect, but I like to think in the almost 18 months I’ve been going that I’ve improved a little😅
The knights are a little more difficult, the sense and vibe I want to give each character depends on the fic. though there are some things that stay pretty consistent, as I’ve developed my writing and the way I want to portray them. For example, Leon is almost always Tired and Big-Brotherly, and Gwaine is always deceptively smart and observant. The others vary a lot more, though Mordred is always somewhere on the scale between Teasing-Younger-Brother, and Worshiping-Devotee, Percival is always a gentle giant, and Elyan is quiet but smart and skilled and funny. I think Lancelot probably varies the most, and that’s because his role, in Merlin’s life and in the fic as a whole, can be drastically different fic to fic. He can either be the Teasing Best Friend, the Worried Older Brother, the Partner, or just Part of The Gang. It is fun, writing them all and trying to force in my own ideas and headcanons about the characters whilst also making sure it fits the fic, and fits at least adjacently with canon.
I adore Gwen, and she’s almost always Merlin’s best friend in some manner in my fics. I like giving her and Merlin moments of just... bestie energy, with no one else there and nothing to disturb them. But I also like making her smart as hell and badass, and just... emotionally intelligent, more-so than basically everyone else in the show. I think in the beginning I wrote her as a bit... background-y. She was just there, crying when the fic was angsty, and smiling when the fic was happy. I want her to be important and, if not in the forefront of the whole fic, at least have a few lines/chapters which are just about her to give the fic some depth/emotional grabbyness, if that makes sense.
~
ANYWAY I love you and I loved these questions and let me know if you want to know anything else!!!

Okay okay, don’t hate me but
Do you have some headcanons for like the pre-series relationship between Uther and Arthur? Bc I like to think Uther wasn’t a completely terrible parent and it’s obvious that he really does love Arthur, and I just think things might’ve been easier between them when Arthur was younger and was less of an equal to Uther and more, you know, his kid.
Idk I think it could be interesting, but feel free to ignore this lol
honestly I want this to be true but watching Uther in that ghost episode made me think like,,,, perhaps not. but I'll gladly give you some of what I hope was the case
Uther definitely sparred with Arthur a lot. Like, he let other people do the training, but sometimes he showed up randomly and was like "son. fight me. show me how much you have improved"
Absolutely allowed Arthur to climb around and sit on his throne when he was little (and no one was around). Arthur always loved it, but what he loved even more was sitting in Uthers lap when Uther himself was sitting on the throne.
Horseback riding until the both of them were thrown to the ground. So much horseback riding. In the forest, on mountains, in valleys, into towns. There's a reason for Arthur being so good on horseback. It's because his father always used to take him with, because that was their bonding time.
When Uther had to parade through the land or stuff like that and Arthur got old enough to join him and his knights, he used to really hate all the being stared at. But Uther showed him all the things that this meant he could do, (all the while also scolding him that his behaviour was unbelievable for a prince, because yes, he would, I'm sorry) and Arthur did eventually get used to it. There was no other way after all than to endure the attention.
I want to picture Uther giving a really small Arthur piggyback rides through the castle, just because. Like, at least through the throne room and their chambers, if not through the hallways too.
Okay, this is gonna end on a sad note so sorry about that, but the two of them visit Ygraine's grave together once a year on her birthday. Arthur still does it that way after Uther dies, except that he also visits Uther too now.

Authors Note: Thank you so much for sending in the first request for this blog! Fair warning I'm doing all my writing on my phone at the moment and I couldn't really get the ending to flow how I wanted it to so it's not perfect, but I really hope everyone likes it!

It was such a silly mistake.
You trusted someone too soon, tried to help them.
Next thing you knew you were being accused of witchcraft. It was true but considering your accuser had no real evidence you thought perhaps you could argue your way out of it. You called them crazy, demanded proof, spouted off any alternative explanation for what had happened to no avail. Uther didn't give a damn about proof, the moment the word magic was held against you it was up to you to prove you hadn't used it.
Even if you hadn't, how do you prove a thing like that?
Pleading your case was useless, and the one person who could help you had left with Arthur and the knights before any of this had begun. Even if they somehow showed up before the execution, you wouldn't want Merlin's help.
He couldn't be caught helping you, not with his destiny. You weren't worth the risk, though he certainly would've argued otherwise if he'd had the chance.
No, you only had one choice left in your small cell. You would have to find an opportunity to use something that you saved for a situation such as this. When an old friend came to visit, to say goodbye, that was your opportunity.
You asked them to come back with the blue vial tucked in the back of your armoire. "It's a poison," You had told them. "I don't want to give Uther the satisfaction."
Tearfully, they obliged. In the middle of the night you chugged it down, and not one hour later your 'body' was wrapped in a sheet and wheeled out of the dungeons 'To be buried in the morning.' But the enchantment on the potion wore off before then, and you woke up alone and free.
You crept out of Camelot at the break of dawn with nothing but the clothes on your back, making it to the treeline before your will broke down and you turned back to look at the old castle peeking out over the tall walls.
Your home was behind those walls, your friends lived there, and the man you had surely fallen for. Tears stung your eyes as you thought about him, the fact you never got to say goodbye, how long it would be until you would see him again.
You could risk waiting for him to return, but if someone outside of Arthur's party were to catch you...you would be forced to do something you'd regret. You'd have to cross the line of no return and goodbye at that point would surely be permanent.
'Someday,' You thought, 'Until then, he'll understand, he might even come find me.'
Little did you know the guard who discovered the empty cloth had no intention of telling the king that the body of a prisoner had gone missing on his watch. No, he had a family to tend to, he wasn't losing his position because of some witch. It didn't even cross his mind that you might not be dead.
There was an empty grave in the pauper's field the next morning, and any questions on your whereabouts were contained in the mind of one underpaid guardsman for two years.
Meanwhile, Merlin had been devastated when he heard the news, even confused. Gaius told him the whole story, what he knew of it anyway, but he could never wrap his mind around it. It didn't make sense. He had spoken to you only a few days before, you smiled and hugged him and told him to come home safe. And just like that you were gone? The irrational fear of someone you tried to help, and the blind tyranny of Uther, that's all it took and now nobody would ever see that smile again. No, it didn't make any sense at all.
He eventually did what he had to do, put on a brave face and got back to work. And yes, a while after that night things got somewhat close to normal again. But there were always moments where he'd think to himself that he'd have to tell you about his day or a joke he heard, and then he'd remember. In other moments, he'd see Uther laughing at dinner or be forced to hear one of his speeches and his jaw would clench just a little tighter than it had before. And when he found himself awake in the middle of the night, when the world was dead silent and the only light in his room came from the moon, it was because he had found himself caught up in the memories you had together.
You had those nights too.
You had been dead on your feet by the time you stumbled into the small, reclusive village you'd learn to call your home. You'd been told that nobody really ever passed through on purpose, and they liked it that way. You told them that you could use a life like that, and then asked if they had need a physician. They did.
Sure, a reclusive person probably would've loved the little life you built for yourself. You had a small but cozy spot to live on the edge of the village, not long after you showed up you began to tend to minor wounds and ailments, making a few friends along the way. Occasionally two farmers would ride into the city to barter off crops for supplies and other things, eventually they began to bring you back a book or a small trinket each time to thank you for your work. It was nice.
But still loneliness tugged at your heart, more than you imagined it would when you took that last look at your home. On the most random days, doing the most random things, you'd find yourself thinking about everyone again and crying for up to an hour before you could pull yourself together again. Those moments became more rare over time, but they never hurt any less. You were never quite back to normal.
Finally, you were wrapping a farmers broken finger, speaking about the state of the kingdom and how you were surprised Uther had felt the need to improve anything it all, when you heard the news.
"Oh, no. The king died months ago, Arthur's in charge now."
You knew you must've gone pale, as the next thing the man said to you was a question of your health. You were quick to respond with a growing smile, "Why didn't you say something earlier?"
He shrugged at you, "I'm not all that concerned with politics. These men, they're all the same to us out here, you know?"
But you knew the difference.
Your life depended on it.
You finished his treatment and sent him away without much else to say on the matter. You had to pack, after all. Later on that day you pleaded with a neighbor to let you borrow her horse, and your friends gathered around as they overheard you say you needed to go to the capitol. You honestly felt a bit bad leaving in such a rush, but after you relayed a safe version of your story, why you came here and why you had to leave, they all seemed to understand.
With many promises from you that they could send for you if they ever needed to, and many words of encouragement from them, you took off. Even when you stopped in the night to allow the horse some rest, you never got any yourself, too excited and nervous and overwhelmed all at once. You spent hours contemplating what to say to everyone, but nothing seemed right.
Another days journey, and you were home.
The response you got to your return wasn't what you expected. Your first stop was to check on the friend who got the potion to you in the first place, and strangely they let out a short shriek before slamming the door in your face. You knocked again, speaking through the door. "It's me...I'm back?"
"Go away!"
You furrowed your brow at them, hurt and confused. But ultimately you walked away, thinking a reaction like that might be deserved considering what you must've put them through that night. As you continued down the street there were a few people who recognized you and proceeded to clear out of your way with gasps and whispers, pulling along anyone they were walking with.
Last time you were here you had been accused of witchcraft, and two decades of fear don't just disappear with a new king, so you simply accepted that as the reasoning and started to make your way up through the lower towns.
On the other end of the city, Merlin had just reached the end of an extremely long day. It had dragged on so long that it felt as though the walk from the armoury to his room took another hour. He didn't even bother to get something to eat, he just wanted to sleep. So naturally when he had just layed down in bed when someone decided to knock on the front door, he didn't know any better than to be annoyed.
At first he thought Gaius would take care of it, then he remembered that he wasn't home.
Maybe they'll just go away.
Whoever it was knocked again and he pulled the pillow over his head.
Please go away.
The front door creaked open and he heard a familiar voice call out. "Hello...Gaius? Merlin?"
He sat up, a heavy feeling settling into his gut as he realized where he had heard that voice before.
But...it couldn't be. Could it?
He shook his head, leaving his bedroom to shoo out the person who couldn't have been you.
But there you were, flipping through an old book that had been sitting on the table since the day before. When you noticed he was standing there you looked up with a sad smile, saying the only thing that you could think of; "Hi..."
"Hi?"
"I uh- I know it's been a long time," You started, crossing your arms over your chest in an awkward stance. "I wish I didn't have to leave like I did but..."
"Leave??" He repeated what you said once more. Finally you registered how strangely he was looking at you, not angry or upset but bewildered, and maybe even scared. What he said next confused you even more. "How are you alive?"
"I thought you might've had more faith in me than that." You joked, but he wasn't amused. "Am I missing something?"
He was hesitant to approach you, unsure of how he was supposed to say it but he tried. "They told me you were gone, that you'd poisoned yourself. I mean...Gaius saw you."
"It was meant to look like that, but it was a trick." You said. "I left when I awoke, they didn't tell people I escaped?"
He shook his head no, tears starting to stream down his face. "...I can't believe this."
As the reality of the situation hit you, you couldn't help but cry as well. All you were guilty about, what you thought you put your loved ones through, it had actually been so much worse. "I am so sorry, if I had any idea I would've- well I don't know what I would've done. I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I'm just, I'm so happy that you're here, and you're okay." Striding over with a grin, he pulled you into his arms. "I've missed you."
"And I, you. More than I could ever put into words." With a laugh you continued. "Things got so boring without you."
"I'm sure they did, you won't believe some of things I have to tell you."
And that was all it took, you both sat down at a table as you filled each other in on everything that had happened in the last two years. It took hours, there were multiple times you had to stop and collect yourselves as certain stories had you laughing until your stomachs ached. Gaius came home and after another tearful welcome back he made you all something to eat and had plenty of his own twists on things that had happened.
As if no time had passed at all, the world felt normal again. You were back where you belonged.
You were home.

Merlin S3E8, “The Eye of the Phoenix”
Okay so Arthur washing his face in slow-mo. Merlin dressing him in a room full of candles. Him walking into the Council Hall at night alone? Merlin and Gwen watching him.
Merlin is such a little shit. I love him.
A quest huh?
Times like these you can really tell how much they’ve grown since S1.
This show will take any excuse to reinvent folklore.
Something’s wrong with Arthur.
Where is Merlin going? (To a bar fight apparently.)
GWAINE!!!!!! WE GET TO SEE GWAINE AGAIN!!!
Oh it’s the guy from Willow! “Then you must be courage.” “No? I’m Prince Arthur of Camelot.”
So Strength = Gwaine and Magic = Merlin, I presume.
Gwen is still wary of Morgana.
Weirdly they said Gaius instead of Gwaine in the subtitles at one point. Was confused for a bit but it’s just a mistake. (Get good subtitles, BBC…)
GWEN NOW KNOWS MORGANA HAS MAGIC. I REPEAT GWEN NOW KNOWS MORGANA HAS MAGIC
So. Uh. Don’t die, Arthur?
I was right!
I feel like the Keeper of the Bridge is hiding something.
I feel so sorry for Bradley James. And for the costume cleaners.
Gwaine and Merlin’s relationship makes me go softly insane.
I wonder if Gwaine will learn Merlin has magic?
Ohh so Gwen is telling Gaius…
What are those things flying around the tower? I don’t really think they’re dragons because Kilgharrah would’ve mentioned it. They look like those things in Father’s Day (Doctor Who)
I’m not entirely sure the tower is a safer place to go.
So the thingy is taking the last of Arthur’s strength…
This is where you see just how much the CGI has improved.
OHH RIGHT MERLIN’S A DRAGONLORD
Yes, but who’s throne room?
Brains vs brawn. Who’ll open that door first?
Is that the Fisher King? (Merlin bows his head to him.)
HIS FACE WHEN HE REACHES INTO THE CRANNY
Ohh. So legendary kings follow each other. Fisher King gets replaced by Once and Future King.
It kind of feels like Merlin takes all Arthur’s things to prove himself away from him. Does Arthur ever succeed on his own.
I like how this episode is directed. And the foreshadowing is enormous.
The scene between Merlin and the Fisher King is just SO GOOD. Especially when Merlin kneels to him. (And the music! The music!)
Gwaine breaks my heart. He’s just… all of the people he’s close to always leave him. He’s alone. He’s so alone.
Merlin deserves a day off though.
Fuck you Uther. Arthur already was that man.
That ending shot? I love it.

Blue team
Week 1 Prompt 2: “We All Matter”
Squatting in the quaint cottage at Ealdor, Balinor was busy mending an already worn out table, when he heard Hunith dash towards the window with a little shriek. Whipping his head up, his eyebrows furrowed as he saw her tense shoulders sag with relief. He walked up to her.
“Are you alright, love?”
Hunith turned, her bright blue eyes wide and anxious.
“I thought I heard a knight pass by, I thought he would...”
Balinor carefully peeked out of the window, and after making sure there was no immediate danger, shut the drapes. He led Hunith to the cot and sat her down.
“There’s no one there, my dear.”
“For now, yes,” she blinked back her tears, “But they will find you and take you away, sooner or later. And then what am I to do?"
Gently lifting her chin to face him, he gripped onto her wrist with his other hand.
"Run away with me then,"
She looked up with a sad smile and shook her head slightly.
"I couldn't... I will not hold you back."
"Hold me ba- what do you mean?"
"Balinor, you're a Dragonlord. You’re destined for greatness, you will change the world with your powers. I am but a humble farm-worker. I do not matter.”
“Don’t say that. You do matter. We all matter.” He pushed back her stray hairs and cupped her face, “And you, you don’t need magical powers. You improve the world around you with your kindness and compassion and perseverence and by just... being you. I know you have greatly improved mine.”
Hunith cradled one of his hands in her small palms.
“I love you very much, Balinor.”
“I love you very much as well, Hunith.”
“And I wish to always be by your side. And yet... You will inevitably have to leave Ealdor, for your own safety, and you must know that I cannot follow you. I...” she choked back some tears, refusing to look into Balinor’s eyes.
“I have a life here. My mother, my village, the people... Here, I am safe and protected and content, especially with you. But I realize, of course, you do have to leave.”
Balinor let out a shaky sigh. he brought her hand to his lips and kissed it, holding it tight against his cheek.
“I.. I understand. I don’t want to, but I do.”
Tears flowing out of both their eyes, they settled into a tight embrace as they braced themselves for what was to come.
Suddenly, Balinor broke apart.
“Hunith,” his throat felt dry, his eyes sparkled with determination.
“I know I will have to leave, but I will be back. Once all of this passes, and Uther’s tyranny ends, I will be free, and I will come back for you. For us. And we will build our life here, we’ll have a beautiful child who we’ll raise to be as compassionate and caring as you are.”
“And as patient and benevolent as you are.”
Hunith smiled, her own eyes lit up with distant hopes and promises. Balinor chuckled softly, planting soft kisses on her forehead.
“We will be perfectly happy.”
Hunith nodded.
“Then I shall wait for you, however long it takes.”
