if you really think about it, “build a bridge and get over it” is actually a really good metaphor for unhealthy vs healthy coping skills. if you build an unstable bridge (use unhealthy or harmful coping mechanisms), you may get where you’re trying to go but you approach it with inherent risk every time. whereas if you build a stable bridge with careful planning and the right materials (use healthy, harmless, well-founded coping skills), you now have a straightforward way to reach your destination with minimized risk.
