@loreofcardigan tagged me to list 5 topics i can talk on for an hour without preparing any material ! thank you nym 🧡

umm i guess my first question is whether i need to say accurate things about the topic for an hour or if i can just sort of bullshit it. lol. so how about i list five things and then say how much of the hour would be bullshit?

crossword construction. this would be 0% bullshit. many a person has rued getting me going on this topic.

french phonotactics. this talk might be hard to get started without a specific prompt, but once i found an in, i could keep it up for an hour. >50% would have to be bullshit (or be qualified with a lot of "my guess is..."es) because i haven't formally studied this and hell i can't even distinguish all the french phonemes. but i could sound very convincing to people who don't know anything about french or phonotactics!

i bet i could talk about murderbot for an hour. 15% bullshit of the "mmm...that's a reach" variety, but most of my theories are i think pretty well supported.

that poem about the ocean i wrote a few years ago. i recite poetry to myself sometimes when i'm upset or have insomnia or just for funsies, and one time i couldn't fall asleep so i tried reciting this poem but got distracted analyzing it and stayed up an hour explaining it to myself. but i wouldn't have been sleeping anyway so it was fine. generally i should be able to talk for an hour about any poem i've written, as a poem is a dense and intricate system for communicating something, and to communicate that something in another way, or to break down the way in which the poem is communicating it, would be pretty involved. but that one in particular i know i could talk about for an hour because i've done it before. this would be 0% bullshit because i wrote the fuckin thing lol.

paintings of light reflecting off water. one of my favorite topics, however it would be nigh on 80% bullshit because i know nothing about visual art except how it makes me Feel. how does it do what it does, and what techniques are at the artist's disposal to make it do that, and what context is any one painting (or style of painting, or artistic technique, or motif, etc.) in dialogue with? fuck if i know. but boy could i make stuff up about it.

New Tag Game: Rec Your Own Fics

ok so I'm starting a new one of those tag games. Because they have to start somewhere and I want to.

Rules: If you’re tagged, make a rec list of your own fics that you’re most proud of. The ones you personally want people to read because you know they’re good. The ones you get extra excited when you get comments on them because people are responding to what you know is your best work. As part of the list, say why you’re proud of them! Participant’s choice on how many that is and where you draw the line on pride, but the more the better. Bonus points for fics that you like to reread yourself or fics that have low engagement because they’re in a small fandom or an unpopular ship/trope. Then tag however many people you feel like to continue the game. (If you want a guide number, try for seven or however many fics you listed)

Secondary rule: If you get tagged and you’re not a fic writer, consider doing the same for art you’ve done or meta you’ve written that you’re proud of.

Tertiary rule: This is the time to be the opposite of humble! Hype your own stuff! Share why you’re proud of something. Do some self love! And please give the game a chance even if you haven’t written much or are just starting out etc etc.

I’ll do an example list to get us started:

Leaves and Shells Fandom: Avatar The Last Airbender

This one is about grief—it focuses on adult Zuko dealing with Iroh’s death. It’s not a light fic, but it is a soft one. I’m proud of it in part because it’s 3 years old and I still like it as much as I did when I wrote it, and also because I think I captured the core emotions well.

Numb Fandom: Batfam

This one is a Cass and Damian bonding fic, where they try to come to terms with having hurt and killed people. I’m proud of this one because it’s not super common to get these two paired together, and letting them interact dug up some thoughts I didn't even know I had until I started writing, and the epiphanies show.

With Friends Like These Fandom: Young Justice

On the intersection between the friendships of Artemis and Robin, and Artemis Crock and Dick Grayson. I’m proud of this because it fills in a missing bit of canon very neatly, and the selection of moments shown give a good impression of their dynamic. (It’s also the oldest fic of mine on this list)

And The Gods are Silent (when you ask them why) Fandom: The Queen’s Thief

Eugenides and the loneliness of immortality (AU)—in which Gen is dosed with the water of life at the end of Queen of Attolia, and we follow the AU from there. I’m proud of it because it shows the whole spectrum of emotion, from grief and tragedy and major character death to reunions and joy in the happy ending.

them born with the dangers Fandom: Tangled, The Queen’s Thief

Tangled TQT fusion. Eugene Fitzherbert is a descendant of the thieves of Eddis, and it’s 100% canon compliant (to the movie, if not the show). This is the most recent work of mine on this list. I’m proud of this one because there was so much I was able to weave together in very few words when it comes to continuity nods and even a tiny smidge of action.

Logs, Letters, and Other Lost Things Fandom: The Murderbot Diaries

Grief again. This time ART’s grief after losing Murderbot to the machine equivalent of old age. I’m proud of this one for similar reasons to the last; I captured a lot of emotion—and a very bittersweet vibe—in a very compact little story. I’m also proud of it because when I posted it it caused complete carnage in the discord and that was really fun to witness.

me watching An Anime (in this case Mob Psycho 100) with subtitles (because my ear is a bit off and I have a poor vocabulary) is always a little bit of an internal analysis of translation choices:

i mean I know why they translate “もてる” to “popular” but it really is not the same thing.

actually it’s an interesting word now that I look at it. like huh is it really the kanji “持てる” as in “持つ” as in “to hold,” as in “you have the capacity to hold [attention, popularity, likeability].” there is also a pretty solid connotation of being Hot, but also of having like… qualifications for being popular/desirable, I guess, like a fun personality, or having a good job. I wouldn’t call “持てる” to be “popularity” itself, but rather to have the traits that are known to make one attractive/desirable, which may naturally leads to popularity, specifically popularity with The Ladies.

Alternative translation: “swag”

JTTW Festival 2020

Took a while to announce, but it’s finally here! What is it? It’s the JTTW Festival, a month-long fandom event starting from now until the end of December!

It’s a pressure-free event for fans (new and old and anyone in between!) of the classic tale of Journey to the West | 西遊記 and assorted adaptations. Nobody’s obligated to participate, but everyone’s welcome to at your own pace! No need to follow the order of themes or to even take part every day of the month.

We’re here for one reason and one reason only: to love JTTW, and to have fun doing it.

Special thanks to @urbanlegends33 and @videogamelover99 for theme suggestions!

The themes:

Day 1: Favorite Underrated Character

Day 2: Favorite Antagonist

Day 3: Role Switch

Day 4: Crossover (can be as cracky as you want!)

Day 5: Modern Day

Day 6: Make your own bizarre AU

Day 7: Most Underrated Relationship

Day 8: Favorite Adaptation

Day 9: Funniest Moment

Day 10: Favorite Aesthetic

Day 11: Least favorite canon event

Day 12: Post-Canon Headcanon

BONUS: Free day (include anything you want, from favorite canon plots to “what if the pilgrims were popsicles?”)

How to participate?

Just pick a theme from the list above and make a post about it on any day of the month. Posts can be anything you want: fanart, fanfic (drabbles welcome!), headcanons, edits, etc.

Any rules?

Just keep it focused on the original JTTW (and adjacent myths: Lotus Lantern, Investiture of the Gods, etc.) characters! You can focus on any adaptation you want (including your own), so long as you keep the spotlight on the jttw gang. (Ex. fanart of Sun Wukong from X adaptation is perfect, but individual fanart of OCs from X adaptation wouldn’t quite fit.)

Can I still participate if--?

Yes! You can still participate even if you haven’t read the book or seen all the popular adaptations, etc. So long as you love the original story and characters, the event welcomes you!

What else should I know?

Make sure to tag your posts #jttwfestival2020 so the rest of us can track the tag! And this next part is completely up to you- feel free to @ anyone you want to notice your post or anyone who’d be interested in this event. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions about the event.

It is a year to the day since uovoc’s Northwest Mansion Heist appeared on my dash and pulled me into special interest hell, pushing me to start writing for the first time ever and getting me to draw for the first time since leaving school. This AU has come to mean so much to me in the past year and I’ll probably write a personal rambling sappy post later, but for now I want to celebrate and create!

I’m the author of Sedna, A lil’ ol Cultbash, A Better Birthright, and Haunted and Hunted - Does anyone have any questions for me?

I’m best at drawing weird inhuman stuff and can’t draw expressions for shit but will try anything AU related. (art tag for refrance) Does anyone have any drawing request?
