just re-watched asoue netflix finale episode.
you guys don't even want to read this, i am about to be so weird about this series.
ouugghhhh the. them finally driving in the fact that neither side of the schism is free of sin <2 hehe, sudden new perspective that changes the moral and ethical implications of everything that's happened in the series before *twirls hair and kicks feet* <222
olaf just being casually objectified. good. as he should. im happy. im happy he got put in that cage too btw. he is sooo pathetic and unwell and dramatic in this episode btw. if u even care.
klaus has grown up so much holy fuck. looking back at the first episodes and comparing him in them to him in this??? even his voice is so different oh my god. the boy really grew up. damn.
honestly i don't blame violet for wanting to stay on the island at first. she's been through so much, she's had to actively protect her siblings for so long, i don't blame her for being drawn to what seems like a happier, safer place.
i wish we would've seen sunny all grown up and stuff. see her be like an older sister to bea ii. might have to make a teenager/young adult sunny design. i think she'd be a culinary arts major. i also like to think later on in life she reached out to fernald and they're still friends and occasionally meet up and play card games whenever fernald's not at sea with his family :)
"you hurt people." "and people hurt me." actually losing my mind rn. that wasn't an accusation, and that wasn't an apology. that wasn't a judgement, and that wasn't an excuse. it's just two statements, both equally true. and they're both acknowledging things that they clearly haven't shared with each other before: kit's acknowledging how her feelings for olaf are in conflict with her morals, and olaf's acknowledging that his actions directly mirror the way he's been treated, specifically because he was unable to break that cycle. kit's admitting that she is not fine with what olaf's done to other people, and olaf's admitting that he's not fine with what's been done to him. it's not an emotional scene because they're in love; it's an emotional scene because of the lives they've lived.
hey do you guys think lemony ever tried to explain the complicated and could've-been-solved-with-polyamory mess that is sugar bowl gen's romantic subplots to bea ii. like was lemony ever just like "oh btw, i was in love with the woman you were named after, but she married this other guy. and they were the parents of the people that raised you. and also your mother used to date a criminal, who also used to date another criminal....and also my brother at some point probably. oh and my brother was also in love with this one librarian, and another one of our friends probably. oh and that other criminal? she also had a husband, who is now dating just some guy named charles i guess," and bea ii is just sitting there sipping root beer thinking "what the fuck man. i ain't never joining vfd this shit is wild."

✨️ 10 characthers, 10 fandoms, 10 tags ✨️
Thanks for the tag @just-an-enby-lemon !! In no particular order, meet some of my faves:
1. Esmé Squalor, A Series of Unfortunate Events
Love of my life, terrible villain, and the City's sixth most important financial advisor. I love so many characters in asoue but if I have to only pick one... let's be honest, we all knew it'd be her
Tumblr media
2. Nadja of Antipaxos, What We Do In The Shadows
Am I still mad at this show? Yes. Am I planning on writing a whole complaint post and probably at least one extensive fix-it fic? Also yes. If I ever met Nadja, would she kill me without hesitation? Absolutely. But I adore her and she belongs on this list
Tumblr media
3. Claudia, The Dragon Prince
She is SIXTEEN and I am UPSET by everything she's been through and I am also SO ready for her villain arc. Timeskip + no time with Soren = unhinged Claudia and I am here for it. Don't let that cute lil face fool you - she could, would and has killed a man. And she'll do it again
Tumblr media
4. Catra, She-Ra
Is anyone even surprised at this point?? I love her! Loved her from series one and I support her atrocities actually. She did terrible things and yet... she has fluffy hair and little ears. So who's really the villain here
Tumblr media
5. Amena, Britannia
Britannia has so many incredible characters but if I hace to only pick one... she's a bitch, she's a queen, she's playing only for herself. It's my girl ♡
Tumblr media
6. Jamie Moriarty, Elementary
If you've seen the show, you shouldn't be suprised. If you haven't... why? I had this plot twist spoiled before I'd even started the show, but even so it hit me like a TRUCK. My only wish is that she'd been in it more, because Nat Dormer manipulating everyone and laughing while she does it? Oh, that's my jam. Also we really deserved more of her literal obsession with Joan because wtf was that?? Fruity. That's what it was. Gay subtext at it's finest
Tumblr media
7. Effie Trinket, The Hunger Games
Ah-hah!! Not a villain!! I absolutely adore her and I resent how people see her because only I am correct about my faves. But seriously she gets a bad rep in fandom and it does upset me because she's SUCH a compelling and interesting character. Also Elizabeth Banks was a perfect choice, no notes
Tumblr media
8. Morgana Pendragon, BBC Merlin
SHE DESERVED BETTER. Morgana redemption arc 2022. My girl did a lot wrong but I adore her and also she was manipulated a lot early on and maybe if Gaius hadn't convinced Merlin to fuckin LIE TO HER about having magic this WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED
Tumblr media
9. Morticia Addams, The Addams Family
She's creepy, she's kooky, mysterious AND spooky. She is an irraplaceable part of my personality and I adore her. Loving mother, adoring wife, involved member of the community... Her🖤 (including two pictures because these are BOTH My Morticia)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. Mel Medarda, Arcane
Love of my life, absolute queen, she owned this show and no one can convince me otherwise. The lack of love for her in the fandom is a TRAVESTY and I will not stand for it - look at her, she’s perfect
Tumblr media
Absolutely no pressure, but Imma tag @swanqueensalad, @ghostlyheart, @accidentallylita, @volunteerfelinedetectives, @lsnicket, @downton-not-downtown-smh, @changelinq, @vaguely-functional-directions, @randomstuffwiththelight, @sewercryptoids-tea and anyone else who wants to do it!!

wil watches asoue? my favorite book/tv series???? okay au time. niki as violet, wilbur as klaus, tommy as sunny
ok ok I see this, but tbh niki doesn't have violet vibes, she's too unhinged for that.
I would say: wilbur as violet, techno as klaus, and tommy as sunny (because let's be real, who has more sunny vibes than tommy).
for fun: isadora, duncan, and quigley would be niki, jack, and tubbo, ranboo is carmelita bc I think it's fun and matches his osmp persona, and fiona is quackity

meta about fire
“Fire” sounds like a very unspecified topic, so I’ll try to include various points here.
As usual, some triggering content.
Tumblr media
First and foremost, there is a recurring metaphor in my portrayal of Olaf. It is a very important thing to consider and it’s something that has an enormous influence on him – there is a fire burning inside of him. Figuratively. All his hatred, all his craving for revenge, his pain, his sorrow, his agony – everything is in this fire.
Now, I believe that fire is symbolic in the ASOUE world. Fire is not only deadly, it’s detrimental, it’s horrifying, more horrifying than any weapon, because it causes the most excruciating pain. If something is touched by fire, it’s either destroyed completely, or a mark is left. And Olaf is probably… fire. He either destroys, or traumatizes those he touches. He is horrifying, because, just like fire, he tends to get out of control.
And that being said, it is easy to understand why he resolved to arson – he sets his inner fire free, he lets his destructive side reign. I headcanon that he got burned many times, so he knows everything about the ‘side effects’, but he still loves watching the flames. It’s simply fascinating for him that by striking a match one can destroy something so easily, and Olaf would love to do that – he’d love to destroy everyone and everything that hurt him.
But that’s the problem – it’s never enough. He sets fire after fire, but his craving for revenge is never satisfied. Because the feelings he’s been repressing, his inner fire – it’s not just about destruction. Destruction makes him content for some time, but it never makes him happy. Arson and revenge can’t bring back what he’s lost. And I believe, he realized it when he started his first fire. He knew it won’t change anything, but he still wanted to hurt V.F.D. best he could, and then… then it just became addictive.
I often use another metaphor, especially when it comes to portraying younger Olaf. It’s a metaphor of hell, and this hell is inside of him, also full of fire. It’s unbearable to live like that, being tormented all the time. I’ve mentioned here that he tried to burn his house down, and that’s the reason – he wanted to destroy this place of misfortune and sorrow (and himself with it) using the same weapon he used against his enemies.
But what makes it worse is that V.F.D. has been using fires since whenever it was probably created. The house is burned, the parents are killed, the fortune is stolen, the child is kidnapped and ready for brainwashing – that’s the way it’s always been, and Olaf, being brainwashed by V.F.D. in his turn, can’t part with their methods in his work, because in his mind the organization still reigns. I guess, the whole Fire-Starting side (or the majority of it) only exists because those who were hurt by V.F.D. and wanted to leave it found themselves doing exactly the same things for different reasons, and thus leaving seemed like an impossible thing to do.
And now to the Baudelaire fire. I do believe that Olaf didn’t start it. He wanted to, he planned to do it, but someone else got there first. And that’s the primary reason for the whole Baudelaire fortune quest. Had he managed to set fire to the mansion, had he managed to get his revenge on Beatrice and Bertrand, he would have probably left the children alone. Because that’s what he wanted to do – he wanted to kill the Baudelaire parents, it wasn’t that much about the fortune.
I can’t say, however, why he couldn’t have done it before. Maybe the timing wasn’t right, maybe he was hesitating, maybe he was busy doing something else or the Fire-Starters believed that the children should grow up a bit before that could happen. But the fact that someone else started the fire he’d been eager to start for many years drove him to the verge of insanity. The more his schemes fail, the more unhinged he gets. Without this revenge he has nothing to live for, it’s his only goal in life, because everything else was taken from him and he couldn’t get it back.
As much as I love Olaf’s death scene, I’ve always thought it would be much more symbolic if he died in a fire.

Just watched the Penultimate Peril episodes.
Tumblr media
...... *lets out a long sigh of exhausted exasperation*
it’s okay. it’s okay. it’s okay if Netflix wants to take nearly every incredibly emotional scene in asoue and either remove it entirely or water it down into a fleeting moment of brief sadness before moving onto the next thing seconds later, because the mystery of VFD-related things and the comedy is more important and the Baudelaires can’t cry or mourn or linger on their trauma like, ever. it’s okay if they want to throw out the point of the Baudelaires constantly worrying about how good they are but being reassured by someone that they’re “noble enough”, which later gives weight to them deciding to burn down the hotel. it’s okay if they want to throw out “what choice do I have”, which parallels Olaf and the Baudelaires. it’s okay if they want to keep turning the kind adults who have been burdened by VFD and are utterly terrified and rather unhinged as a result into more confident, suave, self-assured and capable adults, thus taking a huge part of the emotion out of their deaths, as well as ruining some of the moral greyness of VFD that comes from the mental trauma and ptsd its instilled in these adults that have been raised in it from childhood.
it’s okay. if they didn’t. give Dewey his crying hug scene with the Baudelaires before his death.
it’s. o k a y. iT’s OkAy-
Tumblr media
this show is exhausting because it does so much shit wrong, or just simply mediocre, but it’ll also have moments or even entire parts or episodes of genius, of perfection (like, a lot of Olaf’s scenes, mainly; also THH. but other stuff too!), so at the end of it all I’m just left in a disgruntled, depressed state that’s a numb, strange mix of depression from the sadness that is asoue itself, and depression over so much...... wasted potential.........
it’s okay i’ll just go back and reread chapter 9 in the book, and take some screenshots and pretend there was more to it than there was. netflix you didn’t do my son justice, and yet that was perfect casting, and i still got upset at his face upon seeing the harpoon, fuck you fUCK YOU--

Is there any standout performances in ASOUE (both seasons) for you? Personally I've got to hand it to Lucy Punch (Esme) and Kitana (Carmelita). They stole the show whenever they were on screen. I didn't get into Sara Rue until she was Lulu but most of her lines there had me rolling on the floor laughing. I thought the first season did well with their cast but no one stood out against NPH hardly. At least in my opinion.
oh, that’s a tough one - like i agree with you on Esmé and Carmelita, they were fantastically hammy and over the top (while still managing to be terrifyingly unhinged with Esmé)
Sara Rue’s performance was a bit understated though the scene where Nero catches her and the kids in the library and she tries to convince him it’s a dream was great
i did appreciate the performances from the kids this season as well; Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes have great comedic instincts in general but i think they seemed more involved with the comedy this season - and in general they both did great in Hostile Hospital, with Violet held captive by Olaf and crew and Malina’s performance really sold how dangerous and scary that situation is, while Klaus was having to disguise himself and buy time (and i’ve already made a post about that magnificent bit of non-verbal acting from Louis where Klaus dares Olaf to contradict him without saying a word) - also credit where it’s due to Louis for having to do a second accent on top of the accent he was already doing in the final two episodes
even though we didn’t get much time with Duncan and Isadora, they were a delight whenever they were onscreen; even the rare moments they got to contribute to the comedy (i particularly liked Duncan’s dry comment about pep rallies)
though honestly, i still really like Usman Ally’s portrayal of the Hook-Handed Man/Fernald - he can flip from terrifying and cruel to friendly and hilarious almost at the drop of a hat, and that he regularly gets scenes where he has to hold a conversation with a baby/toddler, reacting to what she’s ‘saying’ and really selling an odd friendship that’s almost entirely dependent on his acting alone
and i’ve made a post about this as well, the quietly powerful scene with Warburton and Fillion in the car, as two brothers separated by time, Lemony knowing Jacques is dead and Jacques believing Lemony to be so, just whistling together but they’ll never be together again, was my absolute favourite scene from the entire season, because of how subtle and somber it was

ASOUE Season 2 Thoughts
I thought the acting and the pacing and general setting of the show felt more natural in S2. Not that it didn’t have that weird unreality feeling but it just... flowed better? Or maybe it was just because I was used to it.
I was wondering why K. Todd Freeman was still listed as a main character and I’m glad they got to incorporate him into the episodes he wasn’t in in the Book!Verse. They did a good job with that and it never felt weird or forced since Poe is so useless and oblivious anyway. Like of COURSE he’d show up randomly. (Also K. Todd Freeman’s Poe is just amazing)
Kinda sad that they cut Violet’s scene at the end of the Hostile Hospital where she loses hope for a minute, kinda like Klaus does in the jail of TVV. They sort of brushed over that scene too. I guess they’ve had more recruiting scenes for them, though, so it’s not like they haven’t been given development it’s just been different. Also Violet needs to get her ribbon back stat
So the casting on this show is constantly surprising me in a good way. I wasn’t at all sold on Neil Patrick Harris or Patrick Warburton for season 1 and I wasn’t sold on Lucy Punch or Tony Hale for season 2 but man they’ve all been fantastic so far.
They did SUCH a good job with Hal. Betraying Hal is the first “wicked” thing the Baudelaires do and in the books it fell a little flat just cause Hal is... sort of just a friendly but oblivious old man? And it’s not “right” to trick him but you know, it has to be done. But in the SHOW oh man they really milked the betrayal thing hard. And that never gets resolved, either. He just... genuinely believes that the people he trusted most turned on him. Poor Hal.
They did a good job with Nero too. I think Book!Nero would have gotten grating really quick because he yells everything and is a jerk. In the show he’s still a jerk but he comes off as more... unhinged and not completely aware that he’s obnoxious, as opposed to an intentionally caustic asshole.
Granted they didn’t give him the snail tie. RIP snail tie
“Those who can’t do, teach.”
Larry Your-Waiter is a gem. I don’t know what’s going to happen with him, I’m like 98% sure he’s not going to ‘be’ anyone as a twist (unless he’s the Snow Scout leader? Actually that I could see, since he’s heading to the mountains...) but I also don’t know if he’s going to die or live or WHAT since he wasn’t really in the books.
Jacqueline too? She’s not Kit, so who is she?
Speaking of Kit, it occurred to me that they’re probably teasing Kit as Beatrice. Which is interesting but doesn’t quite have the right impact since book readers won’t fall for it and show watchers don’t know who Beatrice is, other than Lemony’s ex.
They’re doing the ‘survivor of the fire’ Quagmire twist twice. Granted this one was in the books too.
I don’t really like how they adapted Olivia, that’s the only one so far that’s disappointed me. It doesn’t make sense especially since the Calibans are an old VFD family and we actually meet Olivia’s sister Miranda and Miranda’s daughter Friday in book 13. I also liked the inclusion of a character in the books who wanted nothing to do with the schism since as far as I can recall, Olivia was the only one. And in the show the Baudelaires don’t really need another person helping them on the sidelines; they’ve got Jacqueline and Larry. I just didn’t see the point.
However, the mini plotline with Jacques and Olivia DOES give me hope that they’ll do a similar thing with Kit and Dewey. Maybe just Kit, since Dewey works undercover, but he could pose as his brothers. Or be her agent on base or something. (I’m almost certain we’ll get Extra Kit Scenes but I’m not sure about Dewey)
What the heck happened with Olaf and Josephine
Who taught Sunny to swear
Fernald is perfect and I am so hyped for TGG to see his development
Speaking of Fernald/the Henchpeople... they didn’t kill off the Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender or The Bald Man which I’m happy about, since it wouldn’t have hit the same way with the way the henchpeople are played in the show, but... I sort of liked watching Olaf’s troupe die off and leave him, one by one in the books. It gave everything a more serious tone. Like I still hope Fernald and the White-Faced Women leave, and maybe the Bald Man and the Henchperson do as well? But who knows they might just take that bit out entirely.
Two lions
The Dance Scene had me looking for Widdershins and the Denouements shook. Also they said the night at the opera the sugar bowl was stolen but I thought the opera was when Olaf’s parents got murdered? Or was it the same night? Does the sugar bowl contain poison darts?
