what if merlin told arthur about mordred
I haven’t watched the show in a while but a scene like that is running through my head.
merlin is stressed and unhappy in s5 for obvious reasons and arthur notices bc of course he does. right after another questioning of “I haven't seen you smile these past three days” merlin just snaps, lets out a frustrated sigh as he mutters. “you wouldn’t believe why even if I told you”
and arthur holds in the mocking joke that’s on the tip of his tongue noticing just how serious his friends looks, how sullen and strained and frankly all he wants back is the childish banter between the two of them that’s held him together all these years so he nods. “try me.”
and merlin reluctantly tells him because he’s tired, so damn tired of keeping so many things bottled up and he doesn’t want to imagine a world where arthur is no longer here because he was too afraid to say the truth. so he tells him with a promise not to get angry at first and then “a sorcerer in a cave showed me a vision that revealed mordred is to be your bane”
it sounds ridiculous even to his own ears.
and of course arthur doesn’t believe him at first bc does he ever, he scoffs in response, laughing about how merlin’s jokes aren’t funny. “it is not a joke, he’s dangerous.”
arthur realizes he’s serious and then he’s no longer smiling, instead insulted, annoyed his friend would question the loyalty of a knight—a kid who’s saved arthur’s life. “you know better than to believe the word of a sorcerer.”
“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.” is all the warlock says before excusing himself.
and arthur doesn’t believe him, how could he? after all magic and sorcery has done to his family, he is suddenly supposed to take one’s word for it over his trusted knight? someone who has saved and fought for him countless of times. it doesn’t make sense.
but the way merlin looked at him before storming out plays back in his head like an annoying nightmare. utterly lost, exhausted and desperately pleading with arthur to believe him or at least take heed to what he revealed.
and he never wants merlin to look at him that way again.
so he wonders…what if—
and then angst, more arguments, longing looks, angst, arthur in an internal dilemma did I mention angst

Reincarnation Fic Idea
We usually get reincarnation fics from Arthur and Merlin’s perspective but I think it would be funny to see it from everyone else’s perspective.
As soon as Arthur wakes up and rises from the lake it triggers everyone’s memories of the past lives, Gwen, Morgana, Lance, Gwaine, Leon, Percival, Mordred, Elyan. Cue guilty Morgana and redemption arc. Morgana devises a plan to bring them all together and while they are understandably unhappy to see her, she informs them that the reason they must have regained their memories is that Arthur must have risen from Lake Avalon.
Cue panic when they realize that an Arthur from 1500 years in the past is wondering around in the modern day world looking for Camelot.
Gwen: He must be so scared. He’s out there looking for a Camelot that no longer exists!
Gwaine: If he’s not in a mental hospital. Going around saying I’m King Arthur of Camelot with steel armor and a sword doesn’t scream sane.
Leon: I hope he hasn’t attacked anyone. God, what if he’s in jail.
Elyan: He’ll have food in a mental hospital or jail at least.
Gwen: He has no money, no food, no home, no family! We have to find him!
They go on a search while running into multiple shenanigans and learning how much they relied on Merlin while they are all worried sick for Arthur.
Meanwhile, because Merlin had hundreds of years to prepare for this and is on top of everything
*At Merlin’s farmhouse in Wales*
Arthur: *lying on his and Merlin bed in a robe, his hair clipped back, face mask on, legs kicking back and forth in the air, eating popcorn while watching period dramas*
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | ?

When Krile was trying to expose Alphinaud learning how to draw to impress girls, Mordred said, "It's good to hear he had a normal, lighthearted childhood."
He said it with a sense of relief. In the 3 minute conversation leading to that revelation, it was the first time this miqo'te, dressed in mostly black robes and looking like he hadn't had cause to smile in years, showed Krile a glimpse of himself.
She'd done a little research into the Warriors of Light. She'd received a firsthand report from Alisaie, who gave them such a glowing "review" and spoke the most well of Mordred, who she claimed was strong and clever and all the positive adjectives a teenage girl could ascribe to someone she admired. Alphinaud's remark had been that Mordred did not like him, and for good reasons, and Theodore was sharp and devoted and all the adjectives a teenage boy would describe someone who was an afterthought when standing next to his peer, who was Estinien.
The two Warriors of Light Krile met that day was a miqo'te who looked like he'd lost so much that he'd passed through anger and arrived at the realization that he was glad others needn't have lost as he had, and his tall, dragoon shadow who talked because he didn't, who smiled where he could not, and who was still -- to this very day, years later -- an enigma to Krile.
Mordred had always been the most honest, open person between himself and Theodore. It was why, Krile supposed, he was so visibly, deeply unhappy when they first met.
Theodore had helped her with an innumerable amount of things, and the gifts and souvenirs he brought back told her well enough that he was in fact sharp and devoted. But he evaded hers and Tataru's soft prods into talking about personal things, about himself.
In this way, he was exactly like Thancred.
"Does your future remember Theodore?" she asked G'raha once.
"Only as a story," G'raha replied. "He passed before-- before Mordred did. The first of the major Black Rose casualties. And it was...perhaps the final straw for the pyre."
What G'raha had no heart to tell Mordred was that in the anguished, broken future, Theodore had told him to stay away from the frontlines. As he had done here in this reality, where he had asked Mordred to return to Eorzea after the Ghimlyt Dark. Mordred had been safe in the Ala Mhigan quarters, rebuilding with the people and developing ideas to counter rumors of this Black Rose.
And then the Garleans had unleashed it on Ghimlyt alongside their warmachina, and a broken spear and helmet were returned to the Quarters thereafter. Theodore's silver-gilded, icy armor that had shielded him from countless other dangers and immortalized him in songs and books, could not shield him from the deadly gas and the machinations of Ascians.
Then the books burned in the flames of war and those who wrote and sang those songs died among so many others. And none remained at all about this other Warrior of Light aside from his friend's handwritten letter to G'raha, among the last, that said, "Theodore is dead. There is nothing left for me."
So, nowadays, whenever Theodore came by the Baldesion Annex -- which he did, because he did guildship commissions and because Mordred told him to help with their Baldesion commissions as well -- Krile asked him about his day. She asked him where he had been, what he had eaten.
Theodore said he was a knight-in-training in Ishgard, once upon a time. He told her about his sympathies for Alphinaud having learned how to draw to impress girls because before he had the words to describe his attraction to men, he'd thrown his own lazy bum into lessons of arms and instruments to impress his handsome schoolmates. He told her he liked fairy tales and stories of romance. He told her he felt like he'd managed to marry off the friend he was most worried about never finding happiness when G'raha returned with Mordred.
He spoke about that part with the same sense of relief Mordred had when he told her he was glad Alphinaud had a normal, lighthearted childhood.
Krile's grandfather used to say a very wise thing about people, and that was: very few were as good a liar as they believed. If there was malevolence in you, it'd bleed through to others no matter what. The same went for benevolence.
"I'm glad," Krile replied to Theodore then. "I'm sure you could tell, but...Raha is always worried that you would resent him. For what happened on the First, as well as, um."
"How besotted my dear best friend is with him?" Theodore replied wryly.
And because she was Raha's adopted sister, Krile had a duty to ask. "Well? Do you?"
"People often speak of moments that appall the conscience and ruin their worldly optimism." Theodore said this very steadily, at once, not in the way a lie was too easy but like it was a thought he'd been nursing for some time. "Not many admit to moments -- no, weeks and months -- of things which elevate their conscience, which inspires and enlightens them. Emboldens them. This, Mordred had given to me. In the months and years I have been at his side. How can I resent the person who had done for him as he had for me? How can I, indeed, treat G'raha with anything but gratitude and friendship?"

I have just finished reading this incredible fanfic on ao3 which has consumed my life for the past week. I have done nothing else with my free time than reading this, it has ruined my sleep schedule, it has consumed my heart and soul. It is amazing.
It’s a BBC Merlin fanfiction where Merlin and Leon are raised as brothers and I could not recommend it enough! There are plenty of highs and lows that keep the story interesting, but the general vibe is much more optimistic than the original series as Merlin seems much more emotionally intelligent and doesn’t make as many stupid decisions (hint hint: Morgana and Mordred). And the romance plot is very natural and enjoyable as well. All around 10/10.
The story is called For Want of a Nail by 0hHeyThereBigBadWolf, and I couldn’t recommend it enough hat for anyone that has 1. seen BBC Merlin and was unhappy with literally any aspect of it or 2. has not seen BBC Merlin and wants to read this instead and pretend this is the real plot of the show.
Just found out that the author has a tumblr! @0hheytherebigbadwolf please let me rave to you about how much i love your story. I have not been able to get it out of my head for the past week+. (I also left a very long comment on ao3).

here is the picture without the others in the middle; well i started it and was so unhappy with the sketch that I took a break and worked on coloring Gawain and Mordred what gave me the idea to put them in the middle of it. well Tristan has a bad hair day.... it's like when I draw something I really really want todraw perfectly..... Tristan is probably a Dalmation... (they look stupid when i draw them on purpose; because it's my fave dog breed.... and it's with Tristy I love drawing him but when I try hard... I try hard>.>

been tagged on the main, here's for Merlin BBC
FIVE SELF REC FICS
Destiny will never love you like I do
Mordana, my take on Disir, dark!Merlin. Probably my personal favourite because something like this is what I wished to happen in canon: more Mordana angst, their dramatic reunion and less coward Merlin.
This coldness of the blade
Armor, one-sided love, incest, canon divergent, Arthurian elements: why did Morgana kill her husband Urien?
Steps into darkness
Mordana, they are very evil here and win Camelot. Arthurian elements as well.
Happy birthday Arthur Pendragon
Armor, fluff, their usual bickering, S1 good vibes(well, I tried)
Ten of swords
Mordana, modern au, angst and murder, unhappy ending. Mordred is on the wrong side of history, as usual 💀

i finished a connecticut yankee in king arthur's court, and iirc you asked me to tell you what happens with agravaine & mordred. they weren't mentioned until near the end but this is basically what happens with them:
agravaine & mordred were affected in a stock crash caused by lancelot. as revenge, they decide to tell king arthur that guinevere has been cheating on him with lancelot. lancelot kills agravaine (among others). arthur tries to have guinevere executed, lancelot intervenes, and a civil war breaks out between arthur & his supporters and lancelot & his supporters. the war was resolved for a short time but sir gawaine restarted it because he was mad about his brothers being killed by lancelot. gawaine got arthur reinvolved in his campaign against lancelot and mordred tried to take the opportunity to become king. arthur & mordred tried to make an agreement that mordred would be arthur's successor, but the meeting ended with them killing each other.
also this civil war results in all of the progress made by the connecticut yankee (hank) being undone, all the main characters either being dead or unhappy, and hank eventually getting back to the 19th century (where he dies too)
ADJSAJDFSADJFJA ITS LITERALLY JUST THE STANDARD LEGEND ENDING BUT CAPITALISTIC.AMAZING.

top 5 bits from king arthur stories
Oh don't mind if I do! (I'm in a class on Arthurian legend and fiction this semester and also just generally really like mythology, so I have THOUGHTS.)
6. I know you said 5, but also Gawain self-flagellating himself in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight because he flinched in the moment he thought his head was about to be cut off and deciding to wear a girdle as a reminder of his own shame except then is just catches on as a fashion trend at the court in Camelot.
5. Lancelot being raised by the Lady of the Lake. This keeps being briefly mentioned in texts like The Knight of the Cart and not being elaborated on, but I would like more details on this please! (My kingdom for a Lancelot novel where he's well-meaning and passionate and a little tormented and bisexual and kind of weird because he was raised in a lake by a fairy woman.)
4. Guinevere and Lancelot's doomed and terrible and toxic romance in The Knight of the Cart and Le Morte d'Arthur that kind of ruins their lives but that they're unable to walk away from. They're so incapable of healthy communication and and in some ways quite unhappy because of their forbidden romance but way that unhappiness coexists with the passion of their relationship (like Chrétien de Troyes writing it as a kind of religious ecstasy) is actually so compelling to me.
3. Merlin being the son of a demon in texts like History of the Kings of Britain. I love throwing this fact out to people, it's honestly a great conversation starter.
2. Morgan le Fay learning necromancy at a nunnery in Le Morte d'Arthur. One-sentence mention that I need an entire novel about, hello!!!
Mordred and Arthur's confrontation at the final battle in Le Morte d'Arthur. Okay, listen, this one makes me absolutely crazy. Like, first of all, you have the fact that Mordred is introduced at the start of LMDA and then actually comes back at the end, which is surprisingly consistent for a text that is a really bizarre patching-together and translation of other Arthurian texts. Second of all, the fact that Arthur tried to kill Mordred and all other babies born on May Day because of a prophecy but Mordred survives is so utterly wild to read as a modern reader because those are not the actions of a good and noble king and kind of make me root for Mordred a bit! Third, Mordred being pierced by Arthur's spear and hauling himself further along it to wound Arthur is SO hardcore. Like, imagine hating someone–your father, your attempted murderer, your prophesied enemy–so much you are wiling to hasten your own death just to deal them a blow? So tragic and epic!

saw a take saying that Guenivere and Morgane are crushing on each other and while I'm not here to say they're not, the rest of the analysis of their character was just wrong (to me)
people keep depicting Morgane as mean and irrational so here comes what I got from all the versions of the stories I went through
Guenivere is the perfect queen, pure and true, she was RAISED to be it, and she knows all her duties and she wants to fulfill them and she's GOOD at them ; be faithful to your husband, care for his needs, advise and support him, care for the little people, care for the country, have children and raise them well, she's MADE for this and she's THRIVING there.
as long as she can keep up the illusion that others are acting the way they should too.
then she realizes that Arthur isn't faithful to her and she still isn't pregnant after years, whether she's sterile or Arthur spends all his nights out of the bed is unclear, and she falls in love with Lancelot who offers her the love and devotion she can't have with Arthur, and all of her perfect world crumbles down, but she still clings to it so hard
she was already pissed at Morgane because Morgane likes to party, but now it turned to deep, deep jealousy and resentment and she does everything to try to force Morgane down the 'righteous' path she was raised to follow
now with Morgane, we'll follow the late medieval/Malory canons
Morgane is the daughter of Gorlois and Ygraine (however their names are written in the version you're most familiar with)
she comes from a castle that's half in the fairies world, she's a magic user, she saw a man use magic to destroy her family, she saw a man use warfare to kill her father and take away her mother
in comes Arthur who is her baby brother, whom she loves as he's her mother's son, whom she resents as he stole her birthright to be a ruler just to be mediocre at it, whom she hates as he is Uther's son
she does not let men rule her, she still seeks love from them, she's furious when they don't meet her standards and gets revenge
in comes Guenivere, who pretends not to see how unhappy she is, who clings on the ways she was raised and does her damnest to be perfect and pure just like she should
and then this woman, who keeps pretending that she's fulfilled and happy, tries to dictate Morgane's life : magic, Morgane's protection, isn't good, Morgane shouldn't have lovers, she should be faithful to her piece of shit husband (in the versions in which she's married at all), and then she has Morgane's lover sent away to try to force some sense into her, and said lover dies
so yeah, Morgane and Guenivere are two foils, the good queen and the witch, the christian and the pagan, the childless and the mother, Arthur's wife and Arthur's sister, law and order vs magic and freedom
they are the two pivotal points that bring the kingdom's downfall ; Guenivere brings in Lancelot who ends up killing other knights, Morgane brings in Mordred, who rallied all the younger generation of knights under his banner
they both see the other as trapped in wrong ways, they both are very shitty and trying to open the other's eyes or have her react in some ways
they're both strong willed women whose circumstances make them so opposite to each other, and they were both done so so dirty the more 'modern' the takes on the legends are
they are narrative foils to each other, and now that we've settled that it's not Morgane crushing hard and harassing Guenivere for no reason telling her to get out of her town bc she doesn't know how to deal w her crush :
you know what happens to narrative foils on this website !

Most people would, or should, be rightfully nervous around Estinien.
Especially back in the days when he was all snarls and vengeance, as Mordred put it. When his armor was all sharp edges and spikes, the patches of exposed skin a challenge for those fool enough to think them exploitable weak spots, and the rest of him many a dragon's final sight. When there was a growl to Estinien's voice whenever he spoke, and his courtesy was curt even if always sincere.
He used to be very unhappy, Theodore would think and not bother to voice it. They were all unhappy. Most of them were drowning, even. Him, Mordred, Estinien, Ysayle. Even Alphinaud. And all of the Holy See and the Dravanians, in a maelstrom of blood and vengeance, an endless vacuum that had torn their lives asunder and still splintered them more.
Mordred was in agreement.
So he did this:
He couldn't open a jar of honey he'd brought with him on that trip with Ysayle. Theodore said, "Let me." To which Mordred shook his head, walked over to Estinien, and pried the lid off using a spike on his back.
There was a moment of deathly silence in the camp, wherein Mordred walked off back to the bubbling pot. "Thanks," he said over his shoulder, voice raspy from the persistent and unending cough the cold weather had forced on him.
Estinien said nothing. And then, sounding highly amused, "You are welcomed."
When it was time for them to wash up, having sent Ysayle ahead, Mordred turned to Estinien and asked, "D'you bathe?"
"You cannot just ask someone that," Theodore said from next to him, already stripping off his armor that was identical to Estinien's in every way except that Mordred had gilded it in a gleaming blue coating that rendered it more resistant to lightning and fire-aspected aether, to counter the dragons' breaths here. It was enough differentiation that his helmet looked like he served an entirely different order, an entirely different creed, when he set it next to Estinien's obsidian-black one.
Mordred turned to Theodore at his chastisement and asked, "Well? Does he bathe?"
"You cannot ask me that either," Theodore replied, torn between annoyance and exasperation and humor.
"I do," Estinien said on the other side. His thin lips had twisted into a mangled but still genuine resemblance of a smile. Like he'd forgotten how the expression sat on his face but there it was, teased back into existence from some long-forgotten, buried grave in Estinien's memory. He'd smiled more easily about Alphinaud's young antics, but this particular kind of amusement was more akin to a resurrection.
Maybe all the more dear for it, who knows. Theodore certainly did not, because he didn't know Estinien well and could make no assumptions for him or about him. They weren't rivals either because that'd require Estinien to think well of him, and he didn't.
But at least Theodore knew how it felt to go days, months, years forgetting that you were once capable of smiling at something. Out of love or out of humor. And then it got startled out of you, like a fox scaring a rabbit out of its hole.
It had been Mordred that made Theodore laugh that first-time-in-a-long-time too. Over something just as blunt, just as ridiculous, just as Mordred-like. Something about being a tiny miqo'te with a deep baritone and a silhouette that looked remarkably like an inverted vase primed Mordred like the opening to a punchline. He'd never told a joke intentionally in his whole life, and he would never. He said he had no grasp of humor, and wouldn't attempt it for fear of causing offense. But it somehow made him deadly funny.
Yet he wouldn't hesitate to reap the benefits. As Estinien continued chuckling while washing his hair, Mordred slowly turned to Theodore and raised his eyebrows, also very slowly. His tail flicked. He held out his hand.
"What is it?" Theodore asked.
"You said the bastard can't laugh," Mordred replied. "Fifty gils."
"Only fifty," Estinien remarked.
Theodore glanced at him. Might as well lay it on thick. Estinien was aggravatingly handsome when he smiled. "Be quiet. The shark is at my door and you are helping him?" To Mordred he said, "It does not count if you facilitate the humor. It has to come naturally."
Mordred scoffed. "Something to laugh about naturally? In this economy?"
Estinien turned away, shoulders shaking ever so slightly.
Theodore paid Mordred fifty gils.
That night Mordred pried open a jar of pickles he bought from the hunters in Tailfeather (with that money!) to celebrate. Once again, he did it with a spike on Estinien's back. And this time when the scary unsmiling Azure Dragoon sat still to let it happen, it was intentional.
You two are so weird, Theodore wanted to say. He could not.
