Unbreakable Bond

✨Masterlist✨

His life took turns Aaron never expected. It’s not the “Oh, mh, well that was unexpected”-type of turns, I talk about the “God played Cards Against Humanity with angels and decided to make it happen for someone”-type. But looking back he would not want to change a thing.
After Haley and Beth he was convinced that God, the Universe, something out there shared the opinion that romantic love isn’t the right thing for him and Aaron accepted that fact. Even more when he and Jack went into witness protection. I mean, when you are worried about the life of your family being in danger because of a stalker, you don’t think about the beautiful neighbor, who lives next door, right? Right?
Well, without going into too much detail, Hotch did think about her and she about him and vice versa. Everything went good until Aaron received the message that the team found the stalker and that it was safe to come back. He decided to come clean to his girlfriend. They talked about the possibility of moving back to Quantico.
In the end they decided in favor of the move, the final argument was the surprising announcement of her being pregnant. Hotch wants to raise their youngest where his and Jack’s roots are located. But he decides against taking a position at the BAU, instead taking a desk job in order to be more at home. He also has the opportunity to work from home after little (Y/N) was born and continues to do so until she is old enough to go to Kindergarten. Even then he takes two days the week where he stays home. Aaron learned from his decisions and mistakes he made in the past and wants to live up to them and be a better father and husband than before.
And Hotch keeps it to this day, six years later. It’s (Y/N)’s first day of school, while Jack just graduated high school and goes off to college in a few weeks. Even though they have an age gap from twelve and a half years, their parents are sure there are no other siblings with such a strong bond.
Ever since his baby sister’s birth Jack is her biggest supporter, protector and friend. Her first word was his name, though it was more of a “ACK!”, but that’s the best nickname he ever got. As soon as (Y/N) was old enough to comprehend the concept of movies, he introduced her to Star Wars. Since then lightsaber wars out of cardboard pipes are not uncommon. Last Halloween they even dressed up as Chewbakka and Han Solo. You get three guesses on who was who.
“JACK!” (Y/N) runs into her big brother’s room with an excited expression on her face. “Daddy promised to buy me a real lightsaber after I read ten books! With lights and sounds and all! Isn’t that cool?” Jack smiles. Aaron did a similar thing with him. For a certain amount of books he got a reward they discussed beforehand. This way he felt motivated to read and improved writing and reading skills.
“This is awesome. I think that means we have to go book shopping together, what do you think?” (Y/N) is not only the cool kid that has an older brother, she is also the cool kid, whose older brother has a drivers license, a car and a part time job. She nods with big eyes, speechless, because the offer sounds like heaven to her. Getting books and one on one time with Jack after he was really busy with school for weeks? This has to be heaven.
“Ok, then you put your outside clothes on and I’ll tell Dad about our plan.” At that the little girl rushes to her room, not wanting to waste any more time. Jack makes his way down to the kitchen, where Aaron wipes the table from lunch down.
“Dad, I take (Y/N) to this bookstore in DC and we’ll probably go eat ice cream after that. Is that alright?” Hotch looks up at his son. It still feels like yesterday as he told Haley that Gideon is a big no as a baby name. Now he is all grown up and just a few weeks away from the next big chapter in his life.
“Of course, just let me get my wall-” Jack cuts him off. “No need, I want to use this as a kind of goodbye thing. At least until Thanksgiving.” Aaron knows what he means. It’s his last day before he goes off to college and just a couple more until the first classes begin. The family still hasn’t told their youngest exactly what’s going on. Else she would refuse to go to school and go on with her day, insisting on using all the time they have until Jack drives off.
Two hours later the siblings leave the bookstore, both of them having a bag in their hands. Of course Jack's heavier, but both he and the cashier assured (Y/N) that they lift the same amount of weight.
“Uncle Spence will be excited when I tell him that I read Harry Potter, he told me so many good things about it”, the girl gushes. Jack nods, indicating that he is listening. Of course they also picked books that are not that advanced. Still, no sister of his shall grow up without knowing the beauty of the wizarding world. Also, secretly he is hoping for her to turn out as nerdy as he is so they get more things to talk about. His next step is superheroes, especially the Marvel ones.
They converse until they get to an ice cream parlor and order both their usuals. “Do you think you are ready for me to tell you something important?” The older one asks after they sit down at a table. (Y/N) nods, confusion taking over her face.
“Uhm, you know how I graduated from high school? I’m done with school, but I want to get a degree, but for that I have to go to college. It’s pretty far away so I can’t come home for a few months. But I’m back home when Thanksgiving is and also for Christmas.” It doesn’t matter what Jack says, a sad frown has formed on the little one’s face. “Oh. And after Christmas, will you leave again?” He nods and explains when he is off from college and when not.
“We can always skype and write letters. How does that sound? And when you get your first phone, we can even text.” That (Y/N) lights up a bit. For her first year of school she got a stationary set and is eager to use it to this day.
“I’m going to miss you so much”, she says hugging her big brother. Jack pats her back. “I’ll miss you, too.”
The goodbye the next day is a heartfelt matter. Everybody cries, especially (Y/N). She can’t fathom a scenario where her brother isn’t there for her all the time.
The following weeks are also hard for the family. The youngest refuses to sleep alone for the first three days after Jack’s leave. She is more closed off and mainly just does her school work or reads the books he bought for her. By the time Thanksgiving is only away for another two weeks, (Y/N) has read through all of them at least two times.
Her father already ordered the lightsaber he promised her. Unfortunately shipping takes several months, so the little girl still has to wait patiently for her reward to arrive. In the meantime she works on getting the next and she is already pretty close to the comic book collection she wants.
“Sweetheart, can you set the table, please? Your Mom will be here soon from grocery shopping and she will need help getting them from the car into the house”, Hotch calls for his daughter while stirring in a pot.
The little girl nods, putting her stationary set and pens aside to do as her father asked. She is in the middle of answering her brother’s last letter, telling him that she is now the one that usually has to read aloud for the class because of her advanced skill for a first grader.
Just as she sets the last piece of silverware down the doorbell rings. “Sweetie, can you please open it? This should be your mother.” Happily (Y/N) runs up and turns the door knob. Over the last few months she hit a small growing spurt and is finally tall enough to reach it without standing on her tippy toes.
“Mo-” She nearly chokes on her own saliva. The one at the door is definitely not her mother. “JACK!” (Y/N) runs up to him and jumps onto his leg. “Hey Princess. I thought now that you read your books, we need to hold the most amazing lightsaber fight in history.” With a mischievous smile he pulls two from his back, giving one to his baby sister.
It is the most epic fight in history between an elementary schooler and a college boy. They can only be stopped by their parents announcing that it is a tie between both of them and that they have to sit down, else the food gets cold.
The following weeks mostly consist of (Y/N)’s joyous laughs and cuddling with her big brother. She even insists on him sleeping with her in her much smaller bed. On his last night before going back to college, the little girl turns to him in the middle of watching her favorite movie in the living room.
“Do you promise not to forget me when you are away? Because I alway think about you and tell my friends so much about you. I told them you are a hero, my hero, just like Daddy. They wanna meet you because of that.” Jack has to hold back tears at her statement.
“I also think of you so much. All of my friends at college are pretty jealous of me having such a sweet baby sister. Maybe one time you can visit me and I can introduce you to them.” The thought of that makes (Y/N) smile and is a little consolation to the thought of her brother leaving again.
Aaron watches the interaction going down, happy to see the strong bond between his children, despite their age gap. This is nothing like he and Sean were and that is a relief for him and the worries he had in the beginning. It is a sign that he did do some things right as a father.

I'm not sure if youre okay with these kinds of requests so if you don't wanna write it its okay! And I'm sorry if you're uncomfortable with it and I just don't know but, would you write a scenario about how Bokuto, Akaashi, and Iwaizumi would react to finding out their fem s/o has self harm scars? Like they're healed and she's recovered but she still has a lot of the old scars and she's insecure about them and trying to hide them from him?
of course this is a sensitive topic - but i relate to this situation all too well, so i honestly wanted to write about it. cuz yaknow, i write about my struggles, it’s kind of my thing.
*** TRIGGER WARNING *** for mentions of self harm/scars - but there are no descriptions of the act, nor any direct references to doing it. it is not graphic, there are only mentions.
please, if reading these scenarios could be triggering for you, skip out on them. just in case:
here’s a link to a happier scenario, a funnier scenario, a sweet scenario, and a long read if you just need a distraction.
i try to keep my blog a safe space, and if you’re struggling with a similar situation, i’m rooting for you. never be afraid to reach out to a friend, a family member, or even me for support.
thank you for requesting! and again, remember, i’m rooting for you. the scenarios are all under “keep reading.”
akaashi keiji
Well, you knew this would happen eventually. You had gotten out of it so many times before that you used up every excuse in the book. So by now, your friends and your boyfriend wouldn’t let you get out of it.
You had a hard time swimming - wearing a swimsuit only induced your anxieties. It felt like everyone was watching you - everyone could see the proof of you past struggles carved on your skin.
You weren’t ashamed of your scars - in fact, most of the time you forgot that you even had them. By now, you had come to terms with them.
But you couldn’t handle the probing questions that were thrown at you - rather, the possibility of the questions. You’d never let other people see them, so they couldn’t even get the chance to stare, to wonder, to judge.
While you stood in front of the mirror, wearing the swimsuit your boyfriend bought for you, you couldn’t stop thinking about the questions your friends would ask you.
What happened to you?
Why would you do that to yourself?
How’d you do it?
Why would you show those off?
You were terrified. You couldn’t handle the looks, much less the judgement.
But Akaashi was waiting outside the door, waiting for you to step out and show him your bathing suit. You were sure he was expecting to see a sight he’d like; to see a girl who was excited to spend time with him and his friends. But it was the opposite.
Still - he was the only one whose judgement you didn’t fear. And right now, you needed his support more than anything.
“Keiji,” you called, and he replied immediately.
“Yeah?”
With a towel wrapped around your body, you said, “Can you come in here?”
He opened the door slowly and greeted you with a smile, despite your teary eyes.
“I can’t go.”
“Why not? Let’s talk it out, kitten, what’s bothering you?”
You shook your head, “I just - I don’t want anyone to see.”
“I’m sure you look amazing,” he replied, his sweet smile never faltering. You appreciated it, but your nerves were still running rampid.
“Can I show you?” you asked him, holding onto the towel as if it was your lifeline.
“Yeah, of course.”
You definitely took your time taking the towel off. You wanted to warn him but you couldn’t find your voice - instead, you just let the towel fall to the ground.
He didn’t reply immediately - he looked you up and down, genuinely enjoying the sight, while you didn’t let yourself look at him.
“You look perfect,” he told you, sliding his hand into yours. “I understand why you’re hesitant, though.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” he replied. “But they… your scars, I mean - they look fine, kitten. I’m sure none of our friends will give them a second glance.”
“Are you sure?” you asked, shaking your head. “They’re going to ask so many questions -”
“Well, if they do, just let me handle it for you, okay? And I’ll just tell them the truth,” he wrapped his arms around your waist before continuing. “That our Edward Scissorhands roleplay gets gruesome.”
Both of you laughed, immediately lifting your mood.
“Will you really tell them that?”
“I’ll tell them whatever you want me to,” he replied. “But you - you don’t have to tell them a thing. I’ll make sure you can have fun, alright?”
Without Keiji by your side, you’d never be able to even think about leaving that room wearing a swimsuit. But it’s because of him that you found the courage to do it - and you were determined to have a good time, despite your scars.
bokuto koutaro
It was so intense - Bokuto’s body felt quite heavy on top of yours, and you were feeling every inch of him. From his tongue in your mouth to your hands in his shirt to his entire lower half pressed firmly against yours - there was nothing else on your mind but him.
So much so that you couldn’t remember to tell him to turn off the light - hell, you didn’t even remember that there were things you didn’t want him to see.
It wasn’t until he had already stripped you of everything, when you felt the cool air hit your thighs, that you remembered those lines embedded on your skin - those embarrassing reminders of who you used to be.
“Koutarou -”
And usually you wouldn’t even care to let someone see them. You’ve had one night stands and it didn’t matter to you whether or not those guys saw your skin so up close. You’d wear shorts during summer and show them off to any stranger walking by - because none of those people mattered.
But the man who was hovering over you, who was kissing you and stripping you and pleasuring you, you loved him. Your entire body craved his touch, your heart yearned for his love, your soul was hell bent on being entwined with his.
Would this take him away? Would your god awful past scare him off, would your old habits come back to haunt you?
You grabbed his face and held it in place above yours and hoped he didn’t see - you were praying, as his beautiful eyes were staring at yours, that he wasn’t able to catch a glance.
But you knew. From the way his golden eyes were becoming so glossy, you could tell.
“Are those… what I think they are?”
“Koutarou…”
It was over. The love you shared with this beautiful man was going to be taken away - he finally saw you. The broken parts of you. And you were sure - no, you were positive - that someone as absolutely perfect as the man you so luckily fell in love with did not deserve someone broken and scarred and haunted.
Your hands still rested on his cheeks, and right as you were about to drop them - to let him pull away from you - his face dropped to your neck.
“Thank god,” he sighed. “I’m so happy.”
Immediately your eyebrows drew together. “What?”
“No, wait - I didn’t mean it like that! Hold on, um…”
He fumbled to pull his shorts off, trying to stand up and take off the garment at the same time. And when he successfully did those things, the only thing you saw was the outline of something big in his tight underwear - is this what he’s trying to show you?
With a deep breath he hooked his thumbs into his underwear and pulled them down, low enough to reveal his hips.
And what you saw was something you never expected to see on him.
“I was scared you’d react like my last girlfriend… and the one before that…”
Decorating his hips were messy white lines - jagged, rough, prominent. They were much like your own.
“You… you understand, don’t you?”
If you didn’t know the struggle with self harm as well as you did, you would’ve called this a heartbreaking sight. Even still, your eyes wanted to tear up.
When you nodded, he took his place hovering over you again.
“I knew you would,” he said with a smile. “I’m so glad you understand - and I understand, too. I love you - I love you so much, Y/N.”
Even after seeing that part of him, you believed he was perfect. Everything about Bokuto was perfect to you, those unfortunate scars included. And it dawned on you that it was possible - in fact, it was very likely - that he saw you in the same way.
“I love you too, Kou.”
iwaizumi hajime
“Can I… talk to you?”
“Mhm, sure,” Iwaizumi replied. He didn’t look up from the textbook he was reading, though - maybe your nerves weren’t all that evident in your voice.
So now’s your chance to back out - but if you don’t do this now, you never would.
“…Iwa?”
He heard you that time - really heard you. You could tell from the way his eyes immediately darted up to you.
The boy moved from his seat at his desk to his bed where you sat, and he made himself comfortable sitting in front of you. He tried to take your hand into his, but you quickly crossed your arms over your chest.
He realized that something may actually be wrong - he knows you guys haven’t been dating for very long, but the last month has been filled with the best days of his life because of you. And Iwaizumi was sure he hadn’t done something wrong - at least, he thought he was sure.
But rather than spiraling into his anxieties, he would much rather hear you out.
You were trying your hardest to make this a casual conversation - according to all the research you’d been doing, you decided that was the best for you. You didn’t want to make this a big deal because it wasn’t one - not to you, anyway. You hoped Hajime wouldn’t see it as a big deal, either.
So you gave him a forced smile, hoping to lighten the mood and make this feel easier for you. But it didn’t help all that much.
“You okay?”
“Yeah,” you nodded. “I just wanted to tell you about something.”
“Okay, well. Tell me.”
He sat with criss-crossed legs to mimic the way you sat, letting his hands rest on your knees.
“Take your time, baby.”
“Okay, so…”
You took a deep breath, remembering what all the articles and reddit threads said.
“So, remember, um… a few nights ago, when we were in your car and… and we were making out and then we… you know…”
“…yeah, I remember,” he replied, his face flushed. “That was okay, right?”
“Yeah, yeah,” you nodded. “But… So, I know that we’ll… probably go farther, right? Like… more than just touching over our clothes?”
“Hopefully… what are you getting at, babe?”
“I just - I want to tell you now, so that you aren’t… surprised, you know, when we finally… I dunno, do more…”
How should you word this? Are you going to scare him off? Is he even going to care?
“It’s just, a while ago I was going through some things and… and I didn’t have the best way of coping with it… so I have a lot of scars. A-And I’m okay now! I don’t… do that anymore, so you shouldn’t worry - I don’t want you to worry - I’ll just… feel better if I tell you.”
“Okay… is that all you have to say, babe?”
You swallowed hard and finally mustered up the courage to look at him as you nodded.
“Okay, well… you know it’s okay, right? I don’t mind your scars or anything like that - they’re apart of you, and I like everything about you. I’m really glad you told me.”
You knew he’d be understanding - but to hear him say that made you feel so validated and comfortable.
“I’m glad I told you, too.”

Thoughts on the Todoroki family members? I know you love Shoto with a burning passion (pun intended), but how would you rate the others? *Roast Endeav*r good for us*
Oh God they’re all my children (except the burning garbage bastard, fuck him). I think they’re all 10/10 would recommend, and the garbage man is -100/10. But just to break it down, let me give you my honest opinion on them:
Shouto: My precious baby bean sweet angel son. If there is anyone who doesn’t know that I adore Shouto with my entire existence, then this is the post that tells you I would die for him and want to see him happy. That’s my favorite kid. He deserves the entire galaxy, holy shit. *chef’s kiss* I see him anywhere and I scream “HE’S SO PRETTY, LET ME ADOPT HIM.” He is my main perspective when I write fics because I can easily self-project onto him. He is relatable despite he and I being super different (as you can see….I explode like a firework and I am more like Izuku who just won’t sit still the fuck), and I want to protect him from the abuse and the trauma. When he gets the flashbacks, that shit feels too real fuck fuck fuck abort abort mission. And when he bursts into flames, I ascend!!!! ANd when he helps Izuku and Tenya fight Stein holy fuck!!! Beautiful!!! Elegant!!!! When he wants to throw hands with the chief of police!!! Bring down the government you stupid bitches!!!! He is not afraid of anyone. He was raised by endeav*r and went through so much abuse he doesn’t give a fuck anymore. Nothing surprises him. He’s done with everyone’s bullshit. He is 15 and he has seen so much in his life. Good luck sneaking up on him. He’ll just glare at you and ask you if you’re done so he can roast the living fuck out of you. Him during the provisional license exam?????? I am struck through the heart. I L O V E him, he is fantastically flawed and he learns from his mistakes and has so much fucking GROWTH. And when he tells Izuku it’s okay to cry???? Man I sob. I S O B like a little BITCH. And during the remedial arc, he’s such a babe. He is so good. Fuck me up with that fire and ice usage!!! He’s just such a great character. He’s also great for expressing myself, too???? Because it’s fun and easy and I can imagine him sitting next to me and just silently judging my actions like “Cook a little faster, you’re starving yourself on purpose.” ANd I’m here like don’t call me out like that. I can’t speed up the stove cooking time. And believe me he always wins. “You can if you’re not a coward.” Fuck he’s right. I have a lot of fun with Shouto. I feel a personal connection to him even if our trauma was different. I just really fucking love Shouto. I don’t know how else to say it other than wow he is just the best character to hit me since….like Edward Elric….he’s also a red head, a fire type character, and has a resting bitch face, which are all characteristics I adore in a character because I, too have a resting bitch face, and I really like fire and red heads. I could go on forever about Shouto if you let me. I didn’t even touch on him being a pro hero. I can write a book on him.
Natsuo: Oh my God, we stan a king. We don’t get enough of him!! Horikoshi is depriving us of one of the best characters in the entire series. He called out his abusive dad on his bullshit and it was so satisfying. He’s so aggressively passive-aggressive it makes my entire being warm with love for this absolute unit of a bastard child. I hope he gets happiness!! He deserves it!!
Fuyumi: Initially, I really liked her. She was passive and looked to be nervous, but supportive of her brother. And I really like that she was concerned for Shouto!!! She really cares about her family. I resonate a lot with her because I want for my family to be closer, but we do have a few issues that we need to work on. Not as bad as hers, though. During the pro heroes arc, I had the impression she wanted for everyone to just forget about the abuse/neglect endeav*r put them all through, but now I know that isn’t the case. I absolutely love her. She is so cute and sweet and she is the boss of the Todoroki household. The men do what she wants and I think that’s amazing. We stan a queen.
Dabi/Touya: I’ve loved him since the beginning. When I saw him, I was like aight he cool. A little crazy, but he’s good. And then he used his quirk and I saw his eyes and I was like bro…..he’s Shouto’s brother……holy shit my guy. We are learning so much from so little information we are getting and I think that I have appreciated the limited food we’re fed by Horikoshi, but we been knew. I just can’t fathom the pain and suffering this baby went through as a child at the hands of endeav*r. Whatever we get shown in the future about the abuse, that’ll only add to how irredeemable endeav*r is and how valid Dabi is being a villain, even though it’s wrong to be part of the LoV. I also love fanon Touya. The interpretation of everyone is just the best gourmet food out there for my Touya loving ass.
Rei: God I cry so much for her. When Shouto goes to visit her, I break down and become a sobbing mess because it’s such a good scene. Whens he turns around and we see her face and Shouto looks like he could cry? Poetic cinema, my dudes. She deserves the entire world and happiness and God, I hope that she can live in a world where she can have some fucking PEACE because she also deserves that. I want for her to be around to watch her son become an amazing pro hero and influence him the way she did when he was little. I just want to take her in my arms and protect her from her awful husband. I can’t stress this enough, Rei was a victim and was not abusive. She is a loving and caring mother who reached her breaking point at an unfortunate time. But she is doing better and I am so happy for her.
endeav*r: Burn in hell, you fucking bastard. He doesn’t deserve redemption. He has done so much damage to his own family for YEARS. He is abusive, negligent, self-centered, and doesn’t care about them. He only cares about his stupid ass unrealistic obsessive goal, and it led him to hurt his entire family. For years. He deemed 3 of his children failures and favored his youngest as the golden child, and he didn’t even see Shouto as a person. He saw him as a tool, he called him his masterpiece as if he were a work of art or some shit, not a person with feelings and emotions and thoughts of his own. He punched a five year old in the stomach to ‘toughen him up’!!! Shouto was throwing up, crying, and curling in pain on the floor and he still wanted him to get up and fight him, a grown ass man that was like 10 times his own size. As if it weren’t enough, he bought Rei to marry her. And hit her if she got in the way of his ‘trining’. He drove her crazy. He had 3 kids before Shouto and pushed them aside. He drove one of them to villainy. How do you fuck up a child so badly that he becomes a villain??? Holy shit!!!! Fuyumi and Natsuo hate him (just because Fuyumi is a sweet angel princess that did nothing wrong doesn’t mean she doesn’t hate her father. She is just trying to salvage what little she can to meet her own happiness) because he didn’t care about them and he abused their sibling and mother in front of them. He is an asshole. He is a horrible person who took way too fucking long to realize what he was doing was wrong. He is what we say in Spanish, a maniac. Maniacal. Insane. He is the one that deserves to go to jail for all of his bullshit. He deserves all of the disrespect he gets because he’s earned it. I don’t care how amazing of a hero he is. He is a terrible human being that should burn in his own quirk. Fuck him.

Brewdog is the Justin Bieber of the Brewery World.
To understand Brewdog is to have a base understanding of the nature of the Craft Ale and Microbrewery scene and the modern history of brewing the UK as a whole. The advancement of tech and how beer is sold in pubs can be described thusly:
Here’s a drinking game to play- Drink everytime you read “Brewer(y/ies)”. I certainly did when I wrote each one, and it made writing this so much easier and tougher at the same time:
Originally Pubs, Taverns and Inns sold Ale, brewed inhouse. These “Brewpubs” are the basis for modern Taphouses and unfortunately there are only a handful nationwide today. These died out as more commerical and larger breweries were built. These Pubs would normally be tied to one Brewery still but that would be done offsite. Some of the Breweries and Brands would then be bought up, or integrated as a larger mass for modern consumption. It’s why Martson’s, Wychwood and Ringwood all come under the same company.
Fast forward to the 1970s and 80s. Homebrewing had been licensed since 1963 and was a popular pasttime. Chain Pubs like Wetherspoons were introduced that had no tied loyalties to any anyone and could stock whatever they wanted (despite nowadays being merged into their own groups which now do their own discount deals with Breweries), imported beers were more popular as Michael Jackson’s (not the singer) “World Guide to Beer” became a best seller. The main dominating forces in the market were reffered to as “The Big Six” (not to be confused with the Big Hero 6 or the Sinister Six).
Tumblr media
Hehe. Classic.
These Six were Scottish and Newcastle, Courage Imperial (which have merged now to become Scottish Courage), Whitbread, Bass Charrington (both having been bought and shared between IntBev and Coors), Watney’s and Allied Breweries (now part of the Carlsberg Group- the wheel spins on it would seem). Their domination of the market and need to mass churn out Beers lead to the rise of more carbonated barrels which in turn resulted in the Consumer Advocacy Group known as the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) with the intent to distinguish between “Real” Cask Ale, and Ale kept by the Big Six in the now mainstream carbonated, filtered, and pasteurised barrels/ Largers. The downside however to this and the founding of CAMRA came the image that brewing was an dated profession; akin to other manufacturing professions held by the working class in a world rapidly moving towards a service sector based economy. Ales and CAMRA being the equivalent to the Socks and Sandals. There’s no denial that UK Real Ale had an image problem. Nowhere near as bad as “Lager Louts” but the scene needed a Rennaisance.
Tumblr media
Enter the US and it’s innovations to image and marketing. Which brings us to the import of the late 90s all the way through to the 2010s. Suddenly; it was cool to market these underdog breweries, producing quality drink products the brewers cared about just as much as the old timers but with hip, new labels and imagery. In short; Craft and Real Ales were modernised. Some would say Gentrified. Even Microbreweries could produce relatively large quantities enough to begin to sell to a larger audience. Breweries like Brooklyn, Thornbridge, and Brewdog emerged, with the latter being founded in 2007 in Scotland by Martin Dickie and James Watt (phew, we’ve caught up now).
Brewdog sailed in on a wave of Counter-Culture, portraying themselves as the Underdog Heroes of Craft, here to stop all those Lager touting Big Six style wannabes; a company that gave a shit about what it made. It’s not a new tactic, Musicians had been running that show for decades hence why Brewdog’s first proper product is called Punk IPA- a rebellion of taste sensation, a youthful attempt at an IPA (a product that, if I’m being fair, I enjoy; even though it’s basically the same as Jaipur- right down to the fact that Martin Dickie was the one that developed Jaipur at Thronbridge before moving on to set up Brewdog). Brewdog have also made a fair few good marketing decisions. They’ve released recipe books on their beer so it’s now classed as open source, they employ over 800 passionate people across their production plants their own globe wide bars, and which has resulted in the company being one of the fastest growing in the food and drink industry. They also opened up a Crowdfunding/Shareholders initiative to increase consumption in exchage for investment based rewards.
Brewdog’s image has slipped however over ther past few months and a history of shady behaviour surrounding legal battles, and Equity for Punks, make the point that wherever a business trades on Counter Culture, so to, will there be businesses willing to double dip the sincerity it garners to get away with some unreasonably shady behaviour.
So recently Brewdog has come under fire for two lawsuits aimed at Bars/ Pubs that use vaguely similar names. “Draft Punk” (if Dickie and Wyatt thought they were the targets because of an [at best] tennous link between an establishment that sells beer, AND a brand of beer, they seriously need to get Spotify Accounts).
Tumblr media
Pictured: Not Martin Dickie or James Wyatt.
The other was “Lone Wolf” (which Brewdog claimed infringed on their trademark for their Vodka before backing down).
The obvious critique of these moves is that coming from a company that trades on the anti-establishment vibes picked up by it’s consumers, this comes off as duplicitious and hypocritical, but if you go further back, into the history of the company, these decisions crop up all too often.
Equity for Punks, The Company’s Crowdfunding scheme has plenty of criticism. Originally; when I first started writing this article the idea was to write a highly detailed account of each time Equity for Punks messed up, but as I dug deeper and peeled back more layers, the scheme and business practices unveiled  a laundry list of poor decisions. These include:
Reinvestment of profits rther than paying dividends to its investors (who have an annual ability to sell their shares, but as Brewdog haven’t floated on the Stock Market yet there have been more than enough peices written by media outlets and blogs considering whether investors will make their money back).
Producing an exclusive Tesco Finest Double IPA while looking to crowd funding (a move I like to call the Corporate/ Crowdfund Doubledown- which can be found on Page 4 of the Brewer’s Karma Sutra).
Diluting Shares that have an input/ are worth value by sharing them at such tiny percentages, their value drops massively.
Starting a CrowdCube fundraiser for 4 Year Short Term Bonds when they realised that Equity for Punks 2015 wouldn’t meet it’s £25 million goal.
James’ response to this article in which he calls critics “haters” (if at any point as a businessman you have to stop and ask “Am I sounding like Donald Trump Tweet”- you know you’ve gone too far), which; while not bad for consumers- does illustrate a point I’ll be making later.
Crowdfunded on Indiegogo for a $250 a night hotel (because: Punk Rock).
And finally (for now): Wyatt and Dickie’s inconsistent over inflation of the company’s value. In 2015, judging on who you ask, the owner’s valued the business between £283 million and £306 million (extending all the way to a £1 biillion flotation by 2020). This was however overturned when the Company sold 22% to Private Equity House “TSG Consumer Partners” which also owns Pabst, which valued the company at £1 billion. While this does overturn previous actions and give investors some value back to their shares by inflating their worth to match the value of the company, there still isn’t an opportunity for those investors to sell, and given the company’s roots this move once again flies in the face of the company’s image as an anti-establishment. Wyatt and Dickie claim the company was started to share a love of great beer with everyone, but failures as an indie and now this shift has exposed the company for the cynical cash grab it is.
The original title for this article was “Brewdog is the Sex Pistols of the Brewery World” because that evoked similar ideas: Manufactured Anti-Establishment except their origins are reversed. The Sex Pistols started manufactured but have some good tracks and they’re still largely looked at positively several decades down the line; where as Brewdog started in a garage and haven’t been round long enough to tell yet. Then it was Tim Westwood for the same reason except Westwood’s image is way more self deprecating, and how Brewdog get away with screwing it’s fans over is not funny. In the slightest. Soooo, I can only believe the Company’s closest modern analogy is Justin Bieber because they share all the same symptoms: Manufactured Counter Culture, Overzealous and exploitable fans, Cynical Cash Grabbing by owners so grossly thin skinned when it comes to criticism with overly inflated opinions of their products; pulling edgy PR stunts/ nightmares in a desperate scramble for relevance that is so ultimately overdone that it’s boring (no really). I enjoyed Brewdog’s products but now the image has turned me off, and as some one trying to build a brand on Crowdfunding, the more this attitude is allowed to prevail, the more it’ll poison the well for the rest of us. And the worst part is that Brewdog isn’t the first company to want their industry’s share of the Big Six’s Revenue whilst cashing in its fans loyalty and goodwill. Chances are it won’t be the last either so as consumers we need to be better at telling Businessman ike Wyatt and Dickie no when they try to pull it, whether thats by writing about it once they start to take a bit of criticism, or going out and refusing to buy when the time comes to it. In short:

I started this year in Review in December of 2015 because that’s when I think the year really began.
Dec 27, 2015
Wow! Its only four days until another year begins. I’ve made a lot of changes this year. I began writing novels again and wonder of wonders, I’ve actually finished book one of the Handfasting Trilogy, A Year And A Day, and I’ve began on book two Forever And A Day. This story is about three sisters who live on a planet called Vensoog and the choices they make to help their colony survive the aftermath of a galaxy wide war.
February 8, 2016
This was a good week to get some work done. I am more than halfway through Forever And A Day, the second book in my Handfasting trilogy and I have covers done for both of the first two books. Rather than painting a cover in acrylics, I decided to go with some digital artwork so that I could make them very similar.  I think I will go ahead and use Amazons PDK system. It will mean that I can’t put my book up anywhere but Amazon, but its price is excellent—free. And I really don’t have money to pay a regular e-book publisher. My son’s book at Outskirts Press cost almost $2,000. He did get a lot for it, hard copies of his book and it’s marketed in I-Books and Nook as well as Kindle, but sometimes you have to cut your coat to suit your cloth.
I also got my two latest Acrylic paintings done, Cat Napping and Street Vendor and framed. I think I will put at least one of them in ACA’s membership show. Of course entering one of their shows is always problematic, as many times the judges they select don’t seem to care for my art. I used to worry about that, but not anymore.  Having seen some of the art ACA’s judges deemed worthy in the past, I killed any feelings of inferiority I used to have art wise.
Now that I have my enlargements back from the printer, I can also start on the three longhorn paintings I intend to do for the Old West Art show in April.
February 28, 2016
Well, so much for good intentions. I DID manage to get the three paintings started. Unfortunately, I also started a bladder infection; my husband came down with the flu (which he shared) so I haven’t done anything else yet. The medicine the doctor gave me for the infection has caused an almost constant migraine and nausea. Hopefully, however, March will be a better month. Here are three canvases.
March 13, 2016
For the last three weeks, I have had three unfinished paintings for the old west show sitting there glaring at me from my art table. Not really my fault I haven’t been able to work on them: I developed a bladder infection for which I went to the doctor, had a bad reaction to the meds he proscribed, and then I came down with Vernon’s flu he brought home from the Pool Workshops. This Thursday, I was finally able to start on Home on the Range and I got part of it blocked in. Unfortunately, after I sat there and looked at it for a while, I decided that I needed to get rid of the clay cliffs I was using as a background because they were competing with what I intended to be the focus — the Longhorn cattle resting in an almost dry river bed. I painted over my entire mornings work on the cliffs with grey and then had to let it sit long enough for me to be able to work it. I confess I really don’t understand why other artists complain about how fast acrylics dry because at some point in a painting, I will have to stop and let it sit so it will be dry enough not to make mud! I substituted some rolling hills for the cliffs with all those dark, cracked clay lines, which looks better, but I still need to cool off the background hills so that I can push them back or maybe I will add a structure or a tree line; I haven’t decided yet. I will be using pieces of the same dry streambed in all three of the paintings. I have one more day to work on it before I have to stop and do Vern’s invoices for this month.
March 22, 2016
Today I finally managed to start on Chilsolm Trail. I got most of the background done and the horses and men drawn up with white pencil. The background took more time than I thought it would, especially the riverbank.
March 23, 2016
Today I was hoping to get all the cows and the cowboy blocked in, but all those horns and legs took a lot more time than I expected. I finally left one of the cows un-blocked and worked on the horse and rider. I used ultramarine blue and powder blue underpainting on the horse. I will go in tomorrow and finish it off with black.
  March 24, 2016
Well today, I feel as if I am finally making progress; I do still have quite a bit to do to finish this one though. I think adding a second cowboy and more cows was the right thing to do. Five cows just didn’t look like a trail herd! Tomorrow I am taking a break to do housework, but hopefully by Monday I will be able to go in and finish off the foreground. Then I get to start on the 3rd one—The Bozeman Trail!
March 26, 2016
Saturday morning and I still have to finish off my household chores. Put up the laundry washed yesterday and do the dishes so I will have a clean sink to rinse out my paint brushes. (I say I’m only doing them every other day to conserve water, but the truth is I loathe housework). I’m pretty satisfied with the way Chilsolm Trail is coming along. For Monday I will need to finish off the foreground grass and then put in some shadows and highlights to identify which direction the sun is coming from. Details…
Tuesday March 27, 2016
Well Monday turned out to be a wash. It’s wonderful how other people seem to fill up your day without asking you first… Oh, well. Today I got the foreground grass done on the Chilsolm Trail done, and the background and drawing done on the Bozeman trail. I also got the backing prepared for four paintings. I use contact paper for backing and I reinforce the edges with clear strapping tape and use thumbtacks and Gorilla wood glue on the edges to fasten it down. This is easier to clean than plain brown paper, which seems to absorb dust. No surprise that the back of a painting gets just as dirty over time as the front!
The Proof copy of my first book in the Handfasting series came today, so I will be spending the next few days going over the proof for errors. I am a speed-reader so it should only take me about nine hours. I’m very pleased with the front cover design. The image I designed looks great.
Saturday, Vernon is going to be gone with some friends to the desert so I will have that day free to paint. He is actually very supportive, but the more people in the house when I am trying to work the more interruptions there seems to be…
April 12, 2016
I spent the weekend at the Columbia Inn (wonderful atmosphere, and they use real art bought locally in their room designs!) with my husband. It rained non-stop but that did not stop him and other members of CVP from enjoying panning the dirt brought in for them. They did this in the parking lot under pop-ups so that shows how dedicated they are to their notion of fun! We had a community dinner inside the 49er Mining Supply shop and Rob and Cheryl were wonderful hosts. Vernon has commissioned me to do a painting of the Inn and shop so I will be working on that later this year.
A Year And A Day, has been published on Amazon and Kindle and in May I will be making the rounds to advertise it. FYI, if you plan to use Amazon’s free publishing services; start with the printed edition on Create Space. I started with the e-book and ended up with two e-books (different covers but same book). In order to make the covers match, I took the first one I made off-line. Unfortunately, I had set up a pre-order on it, so Amazon has forbidden me to do any pre-orders for a year. Live and learn.
April 21, 2016
Well, the show and reception for Clovis Art Guild’s Old West & Rodeo show came off okay, despite the low amount of entries. I didn’t win anything this time, but that’s the breaks. The show comes down on Sunday. The next two weeks promise to be full also. Monday through Wednesday, I will need to get back to writing on my book and hopefully start my Safe Harbor painting. Andrew will be working with his Dad on Monday, so that will be the best day to paint. I also need to do some housekeeping on some of my POD sites (FAA, Pixels, and Red Bubble). Thursday, I need to change out my art at the Water Tower Gallery, and on Friday I take down my art from the Sunnyside Library Gallery (I also need to prepare a summer schedule for the library), then Saturday I plan to put up a couple of paintings in the Alliance of California’s membership display for the next two months.
I actually sold one of my hand painted keepsake boxes I have down at the Water Tower (Yaay!) So I suppose that this summer, I need to prepare some more for Christmas and Easter, which means developing some designs. Flower designs work well here as I am hopefully marketing these to women or to men buying for women! I ordered some Acrylic paint pens from Amazon and I plan to use them for the actual design after I paint the boxes. (Target date to do these is in June so they will be ready.)
June 10, 2016
Wow. Has it really been two months since I posted anything? Time flies I guess. I won’t say it has all been fun, but it has been productive. Sadly, I did not win anything at the Old West Show, but all the art was wonderful this year even though it was a smaller show.
I have finished two large seascapes and started my entry for the Miniature works show.
Forever And A Day is done and going through the editing process (this means I print it down at the local printer and go over it for errors. Fun). All Our Tomorrows is about halfway through the first draft. Because there are so many characters involved by now and the story moves from one group to another to remain coherent, I have to bounce back and forth between where the character focus is. I wish I could find another way to tell this so that won’t happen, but so far no dice.
Facebook kept rejecting my ad for A Year And A Day, so I ran it as a regular post and they blocked me out for ‘suspected illegal activity’ for two days…Big pain in the A to get back on. They won’t help you when you need it, but they sure do punish users who try to get around their system…
June 23, 2016
I’m trying to do better at posting to this journal. I just finished Vernon’s invoices for June, so I have had time to edit Forever and A Day three times, and I am starting on the fourth just as soon as I pick it up from the printer. I am in the process of writing All Our Tomorrows that I have already revised twice and it isn’t even finished yet! And I sold a copy of A Year And A day in April, for which Kindle will pay me around the end of June. That tells me if my ad campaign bears fruit in June, I won’t see money from sales until around the End of September.
My only entry I painted this year for the Miniature show is almost finished as I got to work on it today. Right now, it’s sitting on a little easel waiting for me to decide if I’m finished with it. It’s a night scene and those are always a struggle to split the difference between accurately showing that it’s at night and still making the paintings features visible…
August 7, 2016
Wow. I have gone an entire month without actually creating art. Well, not true really; I did five color studies for my Vensoog Handfasting series. I started to do a landscape of it also, but I ended up tossing it out (a rarity for me but it was just awful.) I actually have 4 small paintings drawn up (one 8×10 and two 5x7s). I also have two of my hand painted keepsake boxes started. They only need the painting done on the lids and then put together but there they sit…
Next week won’t be productive art-wise either tho’ because I will be starting on our Income tax. Ick. Migraine coming as always…
October 1, 2016
Wow! I’ve had a really busy summer! I have been working non-stop on getting the second book in my Handfasting Series published, and on top of that Clovis Art Guild had an art show and the Guild had to make arrangements to shuffle things around (our meetings, getting our 501(c) submitted to the IRS, etc.), so I confess I have neglected to write here in this journal. I went to a professional cover designer at fiverr.com to re-design the covers for my books and I am really pleased with how they turned out. I also finished the 2nd draft of the book “All our Tomorrows”. It’s currently being beta read by my son Andrew and a couple of good friends. My hand painted keepsake boxes are selling really well at the Watertower Gallery in Downtown Fresno, so I have also been busy making six more of those (actually a pretty time-consuming project). I start with a raw wooden box that I get from a local craft store, seal it, and then paint the base coat on the bottom and the lid. Then I draw a design on the lid and paint that. Then a varnish coat to protect the box is put on the outside and felt lining is added to the inside bottom and lid. Then I put the jewelry back on (hinges and clasps) and finally it is ready to take to the Gallery!  So I have been a busy girl. I also have six smaller paintings prepped (undercoat done and the image drawn up). I hope to have at least one of them ready by Christmas.
I had Pismo Beach critiqued by Master Artist Dennis Lewis at the Clovis Art Guild meeting last night. He confirmed what I was afraid of—those dratted cliffs in the back are still too bright. Considering how many times I repainted them trying to soften them, doing it over again is no big deal, but I wonder if I should also darken up the front. He also had some other suggestions for improving it, so since I have a month before the Fall Open where I intended to enter it, I will probably re work it.  Of course, that does mean re varnishing, but what the heck. I think I will re-wash the back with several layers of light grey and add some yellow to raw sienna for the sand front of the beach.
I also need to get in touch with my friends Betsy and Ron who volunteered to Beta read All Our Tomorrows for me and find out what suggestions they had. Andrew already made several, which I have implemented. It does make the book longer as he said I had rushed through several climaxes and through the chapter on the festival so I have added several pages there that involved re-ordering how the chapters were presented. I admit it does make the book seem less choppy. Beta Readers are a blessing… And just think, I haven’t started the editing for format errors yet! Still hope to get it into publication by Christmas…
December 7, 2016
Well, I did it again—missed an entire month of writing on this. In my defense, I should say that during this month, we adopted a new kitten. She was all alone out at one of Vernon’s commercial accounts. The manager had been feeding her but only twice a day, and a cat or puppy that young needs to be fed at least four times a day. We think Mab’s mother must have been killed and she couldn’t come back for her kittens. We never found the others, and it’s my opinion that Mab survived as long as she did because she is one stubborn feisty cat.
We also put on an art show at the Art Hub. Going to be taking it down later today. Yes, I know it’s raining, but sometimes you have to do what you can do.
All Our Tomorrows will be going to print in about 3 weeks. Yay!
I was hoping to get back into my regular artwork, but I caught a sore throat and it has turned nasty. (Can’t get the flu shot until after this clears up. Ick!)
December 15, 2016
Writing my 4th book in the Handfasting series. It’s a Cozy mystery set on Vensoog. Using Jayla (Gideon’s niece from Forever And A Day) as my heroine and Luc’s best friend Jake (All Our Tomorrows) as the hero. The story centers around the theft of the royal family’s Crown Jewels on planet Aphrodite. The thieves escape to Vensoog to try to fence them. There is a planet wide festival on Vensoog that draws interplanetary traffic so it makes good cover. The fence (Lipski) is killed and the jewels disappear. Jayla innocently buys the Lipski’s shop and then finds her body on the beach while she is out jogging.
I have got local, Royal and interplanetary cops who are suspicious of Jayla’s involvement. I have the original thieves, and the local mob who want to find the jewels.  A housekeeper robot who was programmed by the original owner as a gigolo and a sales bot who likes to run around naked (haven’t quite decided exactly what I’m going to do with them yet-maybe just comic relief).  Then there is Jayla’s nosy, interfering family, and her bossy boyfriend Jake who all trying to help her clear her name and getting in each other’s way.
Note to self: I think I have a form of writers block. I have to decide which of these plot lines to use as the main one, which ones are going to be red herrings and which ones are secondary. My problem is I like all of them so I haven’t written a thing on it that hasn’t felt forced for at least a week.
A Year In Review I started this year in Review in December of 2015 because that’s when I think the year really began.
