Watching Supernatural reminds me of how I want to handle both the gods and myths of the world over and - the subject of this post - God, heaven, hell, that whole arena:
I won't. Nevermind my Christian faith, but there's a corny tackiness to writing fiction that uses God himself and the afterlifes pertaining to the bible, especially when you get into God as a character; He's able to be wrong, He resides in a constantly bright Greek/Roman-looking place in the clouds, all other cheesy stuff.
For me, it's not that I wouldn't mention God, heaven, or hell, but that these are not approachable by any force or person of their own effort or merit; the powers that would roam the cosmos and the dimensions beyond, no matter how incredible and terrifying, still operate below this force that transcends comprehension of all kinds. God would be so abstract and unfathomable that for perspectives sake, the likes of Cthulhu would be seen as pond scum in an ultracosmic ocean, and God is still God by comparison.
And in terms of character interactions with God, they'd be personal, almost one-sided in perspective as all that would be read are thoughts and prayers and all that'd be observed are actions, all done by faith and personal understanding. Even miracles would be treated with mystery; my OC, Raed, is Christian, ergo should he pray during a challenging situation only to come out on top in the end, people around him may just credit it to his own capabilities.
