Regional, inter-regional and international trade was a common feature of the Roman world. A mix of state control and a free market approach ensured goods produced in one location could be exported far and wide. Cereals, wine and olive oil, in particular, were exported in huge quantities whilst in the other direction came significant imports of precious metals, marble, and spices.

So, project time. For Christmas I got myself the #legionpaper mini pad sampler (they are roughly the size of playing cards) to see if there are any full size pads I want, in order to test them I needed a project, introducing the Shadows and Flames flower portrait project. I'm putting this paper through it's paces using my inks ( #drphmartins #bombayink my handmade #metallicink and the glorious #tyrianpurple from #diamineink ) using my #marunib also used my gray #tombowdualbrushpens for the skin tone. This was the #stonehengelight I really liked the way the nib flowed over the paper, when I did the various ink washes and layering it warped a bit so if I get this one I'll only use it for ink sketching rather than ink painting. Today, I had the pleasure to observe examples of Murex snail shells at the Natural History Museum of Milano. Phoenicians (and later Roman) loved the reddish purple dye that they could extract from the murex rock snail they found in the Mediterranean . It took 12000 snails to dye one toga in Tyrian Purple which was super expensive. Only the highest Roman magistrates could sport a “toga praetexta” which has a stripe of Tyrian Purple over their white togas. Roman generals would wear a solid purple togas with a gold stripe called the “toga picta”, and which would later be worn by Roman emperors. Needless to say, wearing Tyrian purple was a sign of power and success. The term “purpura” in Latin lead to the shade “pourpre” in French which is the color reserved for cardinals. The term also lead to the more generic term “purple” in English. It's #pridemonth so I thought I would do like I did last year and draw my characters celebrating the month. Last year it was Selundar and Ancalien, this year we have their son Lyceus and his sweetheart Zagreus, they are both half Umbral and half Phoenix Elf (and in the case of Zagreus also an eighth Star Elf) Coronal Elves (the new generation after the combining of the kingdoms and creation of the Coronal Empire) tend to take after their mom's with skin tones (it is also the same when elves breed with their orc and dwarf allies) which is why Lyceus is more gray, and man do the orange eyeliner tattoos of nobility look bad on the paler skin of Zagreus. Ha! I had to draw them doing a heart with their hands as a shout-out to the fact that Lyceus is mute, the same magical sword that gave him the scar and silver eye janked up his throat. It reflects on the writing style of every action Beth did. Not exactly she was aggressive or initiating it, but when facing the border that would crossing the line, she was the one who leading it, make the choice for it. Then, unlike those cheating wifes who lets their marriage fall apart, Beth actually making efforts to save it. "I am overcome with the need to touch him, to somehow anchor myself to this man. We have made children together. We have spent years building a life, a very good life, and I do not want to lose it." Its so easy to imagine what Naveen looks like and acts like. Typical.
