Add your reasons, if you like!
Other people have added these:
• Yellow fever @notoverjoyed
• Scurvy @monitorchakas
• Lymph disease @wyrmalien
• Diphtheria ( I couldn’t fit this one)
• Malaria “ye olde marsh fever” @bombadilbaddie
• Scrofula “The King’s Evil” @hasturswig
Edit for all the people telling me “uhhh tuberculosis still exists”: I know! :) In fact, all of these sicknesses still exist. In the modern world we live in, however, most of these are only prevalent in developing countries, and certainly not to the extent they once were.

OKAY so I was studying abroad and YES I DID get the typhoid fever vaccine. and the thing about vaccines is they're very close to 100% effective if you're a normal human being who doesn't literally subject yourself to the worst case scenarios imaginable. at a certain point your immune system is like "I'm so sorry I know we're vaccinated but this is too much for me, goodbye"
so of course I was eating street food every single day because it was $1 and I was a student!!! I also smoked weed 24/7 and had the constitution of a little wretched lamb because of possibly lifelong undiagnosed hypothyroidism.
anyway I kept eating street food and ended up in the hospital with a fever, they gave me shots in my ass for malaria, and I stayed overnight. this was the hospital where I ran out of my IV fluids overnight and then my own blood started pumping out of my body back up the line into the empty IV bag which was NOT a thing I thought blood could do!! I shambled around the hospital in the dead of night wheeling around this IV bag slowly filling with my own blood like "hello is anybody here" and I found this pile of clothes in a dark room that turned out to be a nurse and she helped me out. anyway.
so i went home and hung out for a week or so like "hmm my tummy still hurts." that was ME walking around shitting out typhoid FOR A WEEK. eventually I was like euuguhh I guess I should go to the doctor. and then I got there and they were like HA-HA! YOU HAVE TYPHOID!
I had to stay 3 nights in the hospital and it was literally like the worst life-changing cleansing experience. nobody else was in the room with me, nobody spoke to me for 3 days except the doctor for like 5 minutes a day. the TV was permanently set to soap operas and I couldn't change it. I had 1 book which I read in 4 hours and hated. I would later tear the pages out and use them as toilet paper. I texted my boyfriend who was back in the states and told him I was breaking up with him. I think I hallucinated. but the breaking up part was probably the best thing to come out of that!!
oh also I had NO CLOTHES except 1 cheap slip-on dress that I had sweated in so much that there was an actual DYED IMPRINT OF THE DRESS PATTERN ON THE HOSPITAL BED. I was literally so gross and called my friends to bring me clean underwear from my dorm and they did, and they were also so mean and took selfies with me while I was disgusting even though I told them not to (I love them and I still talk to them 10 years later). I have the pics somewhere but it's me sweaty delirious & reeling and looking like I'm going to bite someone while my friends are making peace signs posing around me.
I ended up getting out of the hospital and everyone back at the dorm was like "wow we thought you were dead!" and then I immediately went back to eating street food.

To ward off the spread of the dreaded typhus, New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Royal S. Copeland assigned several assistants to Ellis Island to examine immigrants. The discovery of a case of typhus aboard the steamship President Wilson, after the passengers had landed, spurred the Health Department to immediate action. Doctors were sent throughout the city to examine the passengers. The photograph shows Dr. Copeland's staff examining immigrants from Ellis Island, February 12, 1921.

Typhoid, once a disease that ravaged countries, had been considered tamed by the introduction of new antibiotics in the mid-20th century. Awareness of the importance of sanitation and hygiene also rose as literacy and higher education rates increased; however, the rise of multidrug resistance in various typhoid strains has become a cause for concern. A new consortium, the Global Typhoid Genomics Consortium, has now been formed to further our understanding of antimicrobial resistance in typhoid in different countries and regions. Enabling policymakers to make decisions utilizing genomic data from disease surveillance may make it easier to plan for disease outbreaks and treatment.
Salmonella Typhi, commonly referred to as Typhi, is the causative agent of typhoid fever, which, if left untreated, can be fatal, with mortality ratios estimated to be less than 1% in modern times but ranging from 10% to 20% in the pre-antibiotic era. Historically, the disease has been responsible for deaths on a mass scale, usually triggered by the prevalence of unhygienic conditions, as urbanization and industrialization led to overcrowded cities and unsafe living environments. While the situation has mostly improved in many parts of the world due to significant improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure, it is still responsible for more than 10 million infections, as well as more than 100,000 deaths annually. A large number of these deaths were in low-income countries, with patients often having less access to clean water, food, and hygiene infrastructure.
Salmonella was one of the initial pathogens to undergo sequencing in high-income countries. Public health laboratories often identify Typhi strains from patients and carriers, which serves as an informal method for monitoring the genetic makeup of pathogenic populations in countries with a high prevalence of the disease. More recently, whole genome sequencing (WGS) was utilized for disease surveillance in both endemic and non-endemic countries.

Moving Parts
A common pathogen, the bacterium Salmonella enterica comes in many distinct forms, or serovars: most lead to unpleasant gastroenteritis, but some serovars, the typhoidal salmonellae, cause a more severe disease known as enteric or typhoidal fever. Despite sharing almost 90% of their genes, the typhoidal S. Paratyphi A (SPA) and non-typhoidal S. Typhimurium (STM) vary in how they behave inside cells cultured in the lab. After infecting a cell, STM are enclosed in specialised cellular compartments, Salmonella-containing vacuoles (SCVs), and downregulate genes associated with the flagellum, a structure bacteria use to swim around. By contrast, SPA (pictured in blue) maintain their flagella (in red), so can escape out of SCVs and move around. Alongside differences in metabolism and other virulence pathways, this enhanced mobility likely contributes to the more severe impacts of SPA infections. With no vaccine available and growing antibiotic resistance, understanding what makes SPA so dangerous could help suggest potential solutions.

An Ancient Killer Is Rapidly Becoming Resistant to Antibiotics, Scientists Warn
Typhoid fever might be rare in developed countries, but this ancient threat, thought to have been around for millennia, is still very much a danger in our modern world.
According to new research, the bacterium that causes typhoid fever is evolving extensive drug resistance, and it's rapidly replacing strains that aren't resistant.
Currently, antibiotics are the only way to effectively treat typhoid, which is caused by the bacterium Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S Typhi). Yet over the past three decades, the bacterium's resistance to oral antibiotics has been growing and spreading.
Sequencing the genomes of 3,489 S Typhi strains contracted from 2014 to 2019 in Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India, researchers found a recent rise in extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Typhi.
XDR Typhi is not only impervious to frontline antibiotics, like ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, but it is also growing resistant to newer antibiotics, like fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins.
Even worse, these strains are spreading globally at a rapid rate.  ...
