if i had a nickel for every time i watched a movie this year that had the main character open their own chest as a fantastical metaphor for something and also the trans community was involved somehow i’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice

I can’t remember if Agents of Shield was removed from canon or not but I do know it at least started as MCU canon. Same with Inhumans I’m fairly certain. Oh well please don’t get mad at me for including it in this list.
I also don’t think most of these are even remotely related but oh well.

Zhu Bajie and Wukong are the same person?
? Honestly somewhat baffled as to how you reached that conclusion anon, starting with the major visual differences drawing from the fact that Zhu Bajie is a pig yao and Sun Wukong is a stone monkey yao.
Here's a few images of them next to each other in the 2011 retelling:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They have very different backstories as well: Zhu Bajie was once the Marshal Tianpeng in heaven before he was exiled to Earth for harassing the moon goddess Chang'e and cursed to be reborn as a pig yaoguai, though he still has all his memories from his heavenly life. Sun Wukong, on the other hand, was born from a stone on Earth and spent centuries as a monkey king and then a yaoguai warlord before committing his havoc in heaven and being imprisoned under a mountain for 500 years for it. Their stories do converge for the journey west, but here too they often serve different roles, with Zhu Bajie often playing the part of the lazy and lecherous fool while Sun Wukong often acts as they very dedicated and truth-seeing protector. Keep in mind that this is a massive simplification of their roles in the narrative though! There's plenty a time where Zhu Bajie helps fight against different yaoguai and Sun Wukong's frequently violent mischievousness gets the group in trouble.
THAT SAID--and while keeping in mind that I haven't read this play myself--you DO have a version of the Monkey King in Sun Xingzhe in the pre-JTTW play Zaju Xiyou Ji who basically serves in the lecherous clown role that Zhu Bajie would later mostly take on. Maybe that's what you're thinking of anon?
And then of course (I think this was in the introduction to the Anthony C. Yu translation) a number of scholars have apparently proposed that all the pilgrims serve as metaphors for different aspects of the same mind as it cultivates itself towards enlightenment; so you could argue that in that sense Zhu Bajie and Sun Wukong are aspects of the same person.
