I see dead people and they are in the form of teenagers Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland killed in 1916 and 1989, respectively.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, all eight episodes (too few episodes, I say. A good 13 eps would have been fitting) of DEAD BOY DETECTIVES is available on Netflix.
Series stars George Rexstrew (Edwin), Kassius Nelson (Crystal Palace), Yuyu Kitamura (Niko Sasaki) and Jayden Revri (Charles Rowland)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A bit about the series:
NO SPOILERS
Born out of DC Comics' Vertigo imprint and created by Neil Gaiman with its characters being spun out of the Sandman universe, how divergent is the series from the comics? Not very. They have retained the trio's backstories, but there were story arcs they could not delve into because Netflix's SANDMAN needs to get there first. Other than that, things are twists on canon or new creations.
Of the characters themselves, Neil Gaiman has said Charles was "more or less him" as a boy and in crafting the series characters, the costumes lent a hand. With his buttoned-up attitude, the bespoked suits for Edwin Paine belies his closed off demeanor. Jayden Revri's Charles Rowland had a ska/rude boy looked that was of fashion when he was alive. This was a nod that Revri appreciated as he has explained in the past he's, "half Indian, a quarter Jamaican and a quarter English." Charles also always has red on him as a nod to comics!Charles' red sweater.
While the characters were first introduced in HBO Max's DOOM PATROL, once the plans for a series was announced, it was quickly let known that this incarnation is not in the same universe as DOOM PATROL's characters, despite DOOM PATROL's Ruth Connell reprising her role as Night Nurse in the Netflix series. This series is firmly in the Sandman universe with Kirby (formerly Kirby Howell-Baptiste, briefly reprising her role as Death in the first episode.
Should DEAD BOY DETECTIVES get a second series, Rexstrew and Lukas Gage (who plays Cat King)
Tumblr media
have already spoken of their love of Mason Alexander Park's character Desire from the series, with Rexstrew saying he would love to see Edwin's reaction to Desire.
Tumblr media
There's no malewife like him.
Tumblr media
Other cast members include Briana Cucuo, sister of BIG BANG THEORY's Kaley Cucuo. Briana voices Barbara Gordon and a sundry of other characters on Max's HARLEY QUINN.
Much too hot to be doing voice-work.
Tumblr media
Jenn Lyon (Claws), Joshua Colley (Love, Victor) and Max Jenkins and Caitlin Reilly cutting it up in a (literal) small role.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jayden says he can't wait for fan fiction and edits of Charles and Edwin and says their ship name will likely be Chedin. Mans don't know what he's asking for!

Having finally watched the third episode of Brave Bang Bravern on the way home from work, I would like to state for the record that the commander's quiet exasperation over how his life used to make sense will never not be funny. This man was NOT ready to be in a super robot show. He's trying to roll with it, but he is failing, and it is hilarious.

Hello pptm! Would you talk a bit more about the current state of tv series? You mentioned briefly about an oversaturated market and how The Golden Age is now gone, but what were some of they key problems that lead to it in your opinion?
Would you consider Succession as part of the series that knew the importance of character development? Could we consider it like the final good show in this dire landscape of tv and streaming?
Lastly, what do you think will come next? There's a shift in the movie business in Hollywood if we look at the past year, but I don't know if we should be overly optimistic. Will we take a step back from prestige tv for a while until a new wave will bring something new?
Hello Madam M! Thanks for sending such a thoughtful Ask.
I think that over-saturation was part of the problem. What I mean by that is everyone and anyone trying to cash in on the money to be made through so-called prestige TV, and how the late stages of prestige dovetailed with the rise of streaming platforms.
Not every network went after prestige, but they've all gone after streaming, which has led to these conglomerates of streaming. Platform-wise, this is a huge turn off for "discerning" audiences. People watch HBO because they know what they're going to get. Now, if you sign into Max, you're confronted with the dregs of TV and can't make heads or tails of any of it.
This has been the case for Netflix for years now. They've dumped huge money into developing series but half the time when they cancel a show, that's the first a lot of people have even heard of it.
The other side of this is that platforms have dumped money into these series no one can find (lol), but say you do find it -- it looks and feels prestige but it ends there because the writing isn't solid. My understanding is that the writers' room tradition, which has a big practical training side to it, has been decimated by new ways of working these streaming platforms have brought. Usually, you start as an assistant in the room to learn the ropes. As the series goes on, assistants move up to writing scripts.
If these rooms aren't being put together anymore (which I read is the case more often than before), new writers aren't going through the learning stages.
The other factor is how quickly funding is pulled on these shows. If rooms are put together, there's no time for the craft to be taught or for the head writer to master it.
Do I think Succession got the writing right? Absolutely. When Ii wrote that BTS/Succession crossover for you (remember our bet... actually I can't remember what we were betting on 💀), trying to nail the dialogue and characters was incredibly difficult. It's like when you're spec script writing, you have to show you can follow the format but also write the characters so they are in-character but also not caricatures of their most obvious traits. The last part is what happened with the writing on Friends, for example. Most of the characters became the lowest common denominator of their most notable traits. Obviously, sitcom is a different format, but the point still stands because this is what happened to Greg in the last season of Succession. His character became a stock gimmick and stopped progressing.
I think things come in ebbs and flows, so the industry will self-correct. People keep joking that by amalgamating, platforms are reinventing cable TV. Lol. What needs to happen is for there to be less projects and more time, effort and oversight (The Idol FFS... where the fuck were HBO on that?) on the projects that are greenlit.
Well, there's my two cents. My flight was delayed so this turned into an entire essay.

I'm almost at the end of Baby Reindeer and god what? was he playing himself? did he return to the same places and experience these traumatic situations all over again? indeed, all these characters together with him seemed quite convincingly realistic.
I looked it up early, after the first episode. I was just curious if I knew the guy from some other show. I mean, it is an insanely task and burden, but after watching episode 4? I genuinely can't imagine how it must have been to act out those scenes.

Have we read the same comics, I wonder 😅
Sure, I’m not a fan of how he looks in some early comics but Morpheus is hella fine in other ones 😳
But I do really like the show Morpheus as well.

Regarding film stages and sets, how many can they fit? Is there a chance they would take the Upstead apartment down if they need to build others? I saw people saying that the inside of the apartment is on a stage, but we don't know that for sure.
First of all, they're big! If you watch the set tour LaRoyce did a few years back, it shows the 21st district (bullpen, offices, break room, locker room, interrogation room, observation room, wire room, and front desk) as well as Hailey's old apartment all in stage 10 at Cinespace. That's very, very good use of space, and a lot of it.
I'm assuming CPD has more than one stage available for them, though I suppose I don't know that for sure. The good news is that there is a such thing as a swing set. That's a set that is constructed specifically to be put up, taken down, or moved around depending on when it's needed. Hailey's old apartment is a great example of that. We have seen it used for Antonio, Hailey, Violet, Celeste (I think), and maybe a couple of other times in the OC universe. If it isn't a set that will be used every episode- like the district- it can often be put up and taken down quickly (usually one day).
All that to say, we don't know for sure that the Upstead apartment set is up at this moment. It was filmed on a stage though so if they need it again, they can likely put it up quickly if need be.

The Society (2019)
I started watching the first episode a few hours ago and loved it. I'm gonna watch some more eps later today. Think I wanna have lunch and then a nap. But I plan to watch more eps soon. So bummed that Netflix scrapped the show despite the S2 renewal.

Yesterday I finally finished the last few episodes of Anne with an e on Netflix and oh my god. My heart is full, my body restless and life is all to be lived! GOD how I love stories how I love people how I love life! She is so me I wanna cry (no but she's quite literally the reason why I questioned being and INFP in the first place, cause she's an ENFP and I relate to her so so much!)

What are some of your other favorite tv shows, apart from The Sopranos and Breaking Bad? Do you go for a specific genre or that's not a criteria you have in mind?
Hi Anon,
Thanks for the TV ask. ☺️
I don't have certain criteria, but I do avoid procedurals and some run-of-the-mill dramas mostly since I took TV writing classes. Once you know the structure, it makes it extra boring if there isn't good writing imo. I will be making an exception for Law & Order Toronto, though, because LOL.
Other shows I've really enjoyed:
Fargo, especially the seasons with Kirsten Dunst and Juno Temple
The Wire - considered the most realistic depiction of the US' war on drugs and its ravages
Hacks - finally, something well written for women of a certain age
Atlanta - has to be one of the most underrated shows of all time; basically it's black american surrealism & satire
The X-Files - this is episodic and wayyy before prestige, but the writing still stands up (the creator of Breaking Bad wrote some incredible episodes: Bad Blood, Paper Hearts)
Twin Peaks (most of it; it does go off the rails at some point) & Twin Peaks: The Return - this was named by Cahiers du Cinema as one of the most important works of the year when it came out
The Leftovers - stunning
Curb Your Enthusiasm - Larry David as a social assassin will always be iconic
Cobra Kai - this is my surprise one; it's a great example of how a reinvention can be purposeful and meaningful

M have you watched BoJack Horseman? Its one of the shows that I have only watched once - binge watched the whole thing in a month - and it was amazing but I also have never been able to get myself to watch again. It was emotionally exhausting. I loved it though. I did not know what I was signing up for when I watched the first few episodes on a whim.
I had the exact same experience. I'm not really into animation, even if it's catered toward an adult audience, but I gave BoJack Horseman a chance and of course I love it. It's up there with other good series from the golden age of American tv, right next to Mad Men or Breaking Bad because it's the story of the anti-hero. And also an amazing portrait of depression and showbiz. It's a great addition to Hollywood making art about itself.
I binge watched it some years ago, but I also don't think I could go back to it for the same reason as yours.

They finally announced a release window for season 4 of Evil and then also announced it's the final season and, like, considering how long season 4 has been sitting awaiting a release date (and Katja Herbers made a sort of jokey comment asking Netflix to pick them up which makes it seem like they didn't know it was dropped until recently) I suspect it was not written with the idea it was the final season so it's probably going to end on a cliffhanger like the other seasons, so that's kind of unfortunate. Unless they do some editing magic and cobble together some sort of ending but typically those don't pan out well either.
EDIT: I guess they added episodes to wrap things up so at least it'll have a somewhat functional ending lol

Curious, who on the crew/tv show is in charge of taking a script from the writers and breaking it down to an actual schedule of filming and figuring out all those details? I'm sure availability of locations may dictate when they can shoot those specific scenes etc etc...but if all things equal, who determines that? Is that same person in charge of creating the daily call sheets and determining when the various talent are scheduled to work and so forth?
This whole stage requires some collaboration, but the bulk of the work is done by the AD department (Assistant Director... kind of a misnomer IMO). The 1st AD will take the script and create a shot list, detailing what shots they need, the time they need to get them, where, and with who. With all of that information broken down, they build the shooting schedule. The collaboration then comes in with departments such as locations or casting to make sure the places and people they need are available. They'll also work with the director and the DP to ensure all the visual aspects will come together, and it's the most efficient schedule as possible.
Call sheets are typically made within the AD department as well, but by the 2nd AD. Generally speaking, the AD department is made up of a 1st AD (handles script breakdowns and is the point person of on-set operations), 2nd AD (creates and distrubutes call sheets, ensures 1st ADs instructions are carried out on set), and 2nd 2nd AD (wrangles background and talent, oversees PAs). There can be multiple ADs within these ranks, or a rank missing, depending on the size of the production.
