Chapter 44: Farewells and Proposals
“It’s strange to think of him gone,” Cicero said, looking around at the home in which he’d grown up. “Father should have told me he was having trouble keeping up with the place. It’s not what I expected to find at all.”
He was right, of course. The peristyle garden, always so beautiful in memory, had fallen into complete disrepair. In fact, the entire house was a mere shadow of its former self. What had once been a graceful – if understated – villa was now barely more than a collection of cracked stones and overgrown ivy.
“It’s nothing that can’t be fixed, Marcus,” Quintus said. “After all, it’s all yours now.”
Word of their father’s death had reached us in Rome two days before. Rushing to Arpinum, the brothers laid their father to rest with great ceremony. Yet his death had struck them both to the core.
“You know, I wouldn’t be who I am today without his guidance and support,” Cicero said. “It was his idea to send me to Rome to further my education and take my place in the senate. He could have easily been content having me follow him here – the kind country gentleman watching over his people.”
“He knew you would never have been content with that,” Quintus said, smiling sadly. “So he did what was necessary to give you the right start in life. And me after you.”
“Well, I suppose I must make repairs then,” Cicero said. “This land is what bought my entry into the senate. I’ll never part with it. It’s our home and birthright.”
As the two brothers walked around, pointing out necessary repairs or improvements, I stood thinking, for the first time in my life, that I might enjoy a more peaceful existence in a place like this – or even a home of my own. Both of my parents had served Cicero’s father, and I had been fortunate that the old man had sent me off to school to learn to read and write. Otherwise, I would likely still be here working myself into an early grave, as my parents did before me.
That night, I worked up the courage to voice my desire to Cicero. But I already knew what his answer would be.
“No, Tiro,” he said, smiling kindly. “I, too, hear the call of this land. It is our home, and our lives will forever be connected to it. But this is our time – mine and yours. I could not do without your assistance, for I have much higher to rise. And when I rise, so will you. Eventually to freedom – that much I promise you! But not yet, not yet. We have too much to do before we rest, my friend.”
Thus were my dreams of life as a country gentleman snuffed out. For no sooner as he had given his answer did a messenger arrive with a letter. Cicero bade me summon Quintus immediately.
“It is from Pompey,” Cicero said. “There has been a great disaster. The grain fleet, in port at Ostia, was raided by pirates. Most of the ships were either stolen or burned, and Rome is at risk to go hungry this winter.”
“Pompey, I assume, wishes to respond?” Quintus asked.
“Of course,” Cicero replied, grinning weakly. “He is calling a council of war at his villa in the Alban Hills day after tomorrow, and wishes me to attend him there. Tiro, you’ll accompany me.”
“And I?” Quintus asked, irritated at once again being left out of the great events of his time.
“You will return to Rome with Terentia, your wife and the children,” Cicero said. “I promise I’ll give you a full account of what happens, brother, but I don’t want either of our families travelling alone!”

Early this day i made by accident a “Greek” Warrior-ish Hottie that i got instantly attached. But after spend all afternoon reading some of the life on Ancient Mediterran cultures it changed to a Pompeii Equestrian. I totally agree with Jim. In ancient Rome it was actually better to have a small penis and all statues are exactly as such, I appreciate the accuracy. Jim if I could request one thing here it is. Years ago you did some paintings for The Sims 3 that really caught my eye. ''The School of Athens'' by Rafael and ''The Murder of Caesar'' NEED to be available for SIms 4. I would appreciate this so much. All of the paintings you did for Sims 4 were great. The various paintings sets were awesome too!
You are not the first to ask me to make these paintings for TS4. It’s true I made a lot of paintings for TS3. Making them to TS4 need more work.
I will see what I can do ^^

Well, my life would never be the same without Tolkien’s Silmarillion, Machiavelli’s Prince, Bulgakov’s Heart of a Dog, Plato’s dialogues, Le Guin‘s Wizard of Earthsea, Huxley’s Brave New World, Wilde’s Ideal Husband, Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, Sabatini’s Captain Blood, Lampedusa‘s Leopard and Platonov’s Foundation Pit.
I’m not totally crazy and also I really like Neil Gaiman, Frank Herbert, David Wingrove, William Gibson, China Mieville, Arturo Perez-Reverte, Neal Stephenson and many others.
But my usual bookshelf consists of, for example, "The Military Organisation of a Renaissance State: Venice c.1400 to 1617","Artful Armies, Beautiful Battles: Art and Warfare in the Early Modern Europe", "Turin, 1564-1680: Urban Design, Military Culture and the Creation of the Absolutist Capital" and so on.
And I just adore Zelazny‘s Lord of Light and Whittemore’s Jerusalem Quartet.

RANT ALERT
I don’t have Twitter, or TS4, but if I had to pick I’d choose to Travel Back in Time. Where’s that Medieval expansion at, y’all!? >_<
No, but seriously, that’s the only one that hasn’t been done in the sims yet (TSM/P&N does NOT count; that’s an RPG). Or better yet: do a Dr. Who adventure and let sims go to multiple worlds, a la World Adventures, and travel to ancient Greco-Rome and Norway and Mesopotamia! O_O
Sims aren’t in space yet, per se, but TS3 did have Lunar Lakes and Into the Future. Plus TS4 has whatever’s going on with Sixam. If they expand on it in Sims in Space, and add more types of aliens and technology and such, then awesome. Go full Star Wars/Trek with it and make a high tech sci-fi city like Blade Runner! Less Avatar; more Metropolis!
Similarly, the End of the World was kinda alluded to in the Dystopian version of Oasis Landing in ITF. True, it needed to be way more post-apocalyptic, gritty, Mad Max-y, and such, but still. I’d love to play in an actual wasteland. Possibly with radioactive zombies or sims with mutant powers from X-Men or the Matrix or something; living in underground bunkers being sheltered from sandstorms, acid rain or nuclear winter (y’all brought up Seasons), or hell, even giant sand worms, alien invasions, or -- I DON’T KNOW; dazzle me.
What does Hunger Games even mean? First off: will we be allowed to kill sims with bows and arrows and swords and axes and guerilla warfare? O_O If so, YAAAS...but that could go perfectly in a Medieval/Viking EP instead. ;) Second: Isn’t this dystopian/post-apocalyptic, too? At least make it Steampunk Victorian London! :( If they have sims dressed up like the city elite though....
God no. Kill it. Kill it with fire. It sure is t/wacky, that’s for sure.... >_>
See, this is EA’s problem. I understand that The Sims has always had a strong element of the ridiculous about it. But I find a lot of the time that EA uses wackiness as an excuse to cover up laziness or lack of serious inspiration. Like with ITF’s Utopia version of Oasis Landing, for instance. WTF was that? That’s not a future I want to live in, with frikkin Oompa Loompa lookin hippies high on pollen-nectar or whatever opioids were in those giant flowers.
It’s a great idea for wonderland/candyland or whatever, but not a sci-fi expansion, that could have had the default Oasis Landing as the utopia, and started us off in Victorian London, to tine travel to the good or bad future of Oasis Landing instead. The giant flowers (and the crystal flower plants) could have been part of a new career/profession, like a Xenobotanist finding the herbal-based cures for diseases that would run rampant in the dirty plague-ridden dystopian future! Walking around like the frikkin Lotus Eaters from the Odyssey is EA’s best idea for a sci-fi utopian future? Omg.
