I haven't seen anyone talk about how Joel and Bdubs genuinely helped Pearl. Like, they knew what her task was. But they valued their alliance more than the reward they may have gotten for guessing correctly. And pearl was. So scared they'd guess seriously, like she was literally running away as Joel spoke his 'guess', and then turned around like 'oh'. She'd put so much into that alliance, but didn't expect them to reciprocate it. But they did. And I think that shocked her in a positive way.

i love team ties. you took all the redstoners on the server, gave them an Emotional Support Skizzleman, and now theyve blown up a major server landmark with a perfectly executed plan and ridiculous amounts of tnt. and now all three of the ones who are not skizz have the highest timers of everyone.
theyre menaces and its the best

Somehow, and hell If I could tell you how the soggy sack of a guy that is Tango somehow has managed to never technically lose any of his time. Sure he'd been killed twice, so -2 hours there, but with both boggie kills he got that time right back [think he also has an extra 30 minuets due to some miscredited kill, unless if they fixed that]. Somehow he has managed to be one of the players with the most time on his hands.
But we know the narrative that follows Tango, right. Just constantly dying in the most insignificant way, just a footnote for the rest of the carnage. So it would be fitting for his win to be just as insignificant.
If Tango wins it will be because everyone else's time just ran out first. His win wouldn't be something gained through a final fight, or a gift of thanks, It would just be from not managing to die first.

Life series headcannon:
grian has heterocromia, with one of his eyes being a watcher purple, and the other eye being the color of his life (green, yellow, red). HOWEVER, this only applies for his in game avatar (for those who dont know it was mentioned by martin that grian the watcher uses an avatar to play in the games, not his real body), and his real watcher form has both eyes being purple.
also before becoming a watcher he had pure parrot feather wings, however after becoming a watcher he keeps growing purple feathers which he keeps plucking out of painting over to retain his original cover and hide his change from the others.
also also his real form is inside of the sun, which he uses as an eye to watch down on the world, meanwhile the rest of the watchers reside of the moon (think last life shadow lore)
also also also random bonus headcannon mumbo wears a engineers helmet which can change into a miners helmet (for canary miner reasons)

ok so i was gonna draw these but um. i got lazy. so i'm now just going to write up a tumblr post establishing this headcannon so when i eventually post my fic about it i can link to this as an explanation.
so hi gang. back when i first started cosplaying life series characters i wanted to make up a way that allowed me to more clearly distinguish my cosplays in between the seasons, even if it was just something small and for me, and this led me to here.
basically, what happened here is i decided to give each player a little mark/tattoo like thing representing themselves and each season they didn't win. this has now morphed into a headcannon, that all of the life series players have a physical reminder of every game that they don't win from the watchers, to remind them of what they're missing while they're gone, in an attempt to encourage them to come back. (they're not particularly effective, but oh well, the watchers like to commit to a bit). the winners don't get one because they accidentally set a precedent by not giving grian one (they didn't WANT him coming back), and while the same thing applied to scott, they don't quite feel the same way about pearl or martyn. however, it's also just a little bit of cruelty that there's not physical reminder of what you went through if you win. it only lives in your mind, as fickle as your mind can be, especially in these games. it's on brand for them.
i'm throwing everyone's marks below the cut, specifically what they look like post limited life. i will also explain why i chose each of them, because some of them are more obvious than others.
grian: three purple eyes on the back of his right hand. look the watchers are doing this, of course it's a reminder of what he's supposed to be doing instead of playing these games. for him, it's meant to serve less as encouragement to sign up again, but as encouragement to stop. if you hate us so much, why are you letting us give you more reminders of what you are to us?
scar: a (non painful, because it's not real) injury representing the way he died in each season. there's a bruise on his ribs that never goes away, covered by two scars from ren's arrowhead and grian's sword, tinged in a skulk-y blue.
scott: three flowers on the inside of his right elbow. a poppy for third life (duh), a lotus for double life (victorian flower language is "estranged love"), and hemlock for limited life (victorian flower language is "you will be the death of me").
jimmy: four canary feathers clumped together on his left shoulder. no explanation needed.
pearl: the first two phases of the moon (starting with the full moon) on the inside of her left elbow. obviously due to her name, but i think it's also important to note that last life began a few months into s8 and ended a month before the end of s8, so she would've had her first one show up a month before the moon… well...
martyn: three tally marks on his right eyebrow. this one is less representative of martyn and more of his relationship with the watchers. it's a small mark, it almost looks like a deliberate eyebrow slit or a scar if you're not paying much attention. but as time goes on, and martyn's understanding of/connection to the watchers increases, it's harder to mistake. it's harder to hide what's really happening.
ren: three crowns on the left sideburn. also very self explanitory.
bigb: an arrow, a diamond sword, a piece of dripstone, and another diamond sword on his clavicle. each represents the weapon that shows up around him the most in each season. he's killed by a bow and a crossbow across all three of his deaths in third life, he kills cleo with a diamond sword in last life and looses his first life to lizzie's sword, he is killed by mobs only in double life until grian and the dripstone, and bigb is killed by and kills with a diamond sword most often in limited life.
etho: four sticks of tnt behind his right ear. this is less related to his life series and more his general... everything. it's etho, of course it's tnt. the "behind the ear" thing is also very funny to me because it takes etho AGES to figure out where his is- he knows he should have one, everyone but grian has one, but someone else sees it first MONTHS after third life has ended.
impulse: four arrows on his neck, pointing down. his final deaths in third and last life are to bows, and his first (and arguably only, as bdubs looses the other two lives) death in double life is to a skeleton. the limited life connection is a little more sparse but 1. the watchers had already committed to the bit and 2. he killed quite a few people with bows this season, including bdubs and i am nothing if not annoying about those two.
skizz: three hearts on his wrists, one on the front and inside of his left wrist and one on the outside of his right wrist. hearts are the general symbol of the life series, but skizz is also the definition of "heart on his sleeve". in this case it's just on his wrist, cause i think it looks better than his shoulders/upper arms.
tango: lichtenberg scars along on his left ankle that spread farther every time he looses. these are the scars that you get from being struck by lightning. lightning strikes when you die, and tango's deaths continue to be the most frustrating part of every season for him, the part the watchers think he'd most want to rectify. i know the lightning strike on death wasn't a thing in third or double life, but shhhh don't worry about it. i'm retconing.
bdubs: numbers of a clock on his left side. limited life rounded out the 12, 3, 6, and 9. further seasons would fill in the rest of the numbers and the hands. this is also entirely self explanatory.
cleo: four red stitches around her right wrist. (the stitches existed prior to her playing in the life series, but they change colors one by one after every season. were she to run out of stitches, she would either start suddenly generating more on the same area or ones on other parts of her body would start changing color.) for her, it's just something small that she'd constantly be seeing, as she works with her hands often and the red stands out well against both green zombie skin and the more human colored parts. it makes the series stick in her mind, reminds her of what she still wants from it.
joel: four vertebrae outlined down the spine. the bones part comes at the start from his dogs in third life, and then it becomes more of an association with death as the seasons go on. it's specifically outlining his vertebrae because one thing about life series joel is that he has a spine. he is never a coward, even when it might serve him better to be one.
mumbo: one broken heart on his chest. as martyn discussed in his post limited life stream, last life messed mumbo up bad. like, so bad the watchers decided they couldn't put the guy back in. his is very literal- a broken heart over where his real heart is, where he took multiple injuries over the course of last life, for once, in a mostly non malicious way, a reminder that he shouldn't come back. (i say mostly because, hey, nice to give him time to recover, but it's less because they actually care about the guy and more because they know he'd be no fun like this)
lizzie: small fairy wings on her right shoulder. representative of the fairy fort, of course. were she to show up in another season, it would be something else to represent her alliances, because that's always where lizzie thrives in my opinion, with other people (even if fairy fort was a mess, lol).

loveee this trend it gave me an excuse to draw my pathetic little guy :)
[text transcribed under the cut in case it's hard to read!]
traffic!Dusk -has tons of items stashed (all junk) -cannot actually fly, just glides -fights with a scythe (...iron axe)
green life -set up a community farm -way too optimistic -very under-equipped -(he is mesmerized by the wonders of this world) -[dies by] direct player kill
yellow life -wants to be red, does not try very hard -lost everything in a betrayal -hides belongings in little stashes all over the map -[dies by] pitfall trap
red life -no alliances, but prefers isolating over seeking revenge -still pretty bad at combat, tbh -better equipped from work in yellow life
#my art#trafficsona#trafficblr#my guy makes a big farm and then someone kills them and wrecks everything and theyre like. dang#as a red i think he would be kinda like pearl where he seems kinda scary and everyones afraid bc hes unpredictable#but shes just sitting in a little hole screaming n crying n throwing up bc shes scared and cant fight very well#as a green life they did like nothing to actually prepare just ran around gathering flowers and making the farm pretty#then as a yellow their tools are all broken and their cute little flower stash has been raided for dyes#and they dont really want to fight anyone but everything they worked for is gone#doesnt really try to fix anything or even keep himself healthy as a yellow just runs around stashing gear to find later#then as a red she stays pretty isolated but shows up to scare people off and take their stuff#but he cant really make traps and cant really fight. the scythe is really shoddily made from an old broken tool#so it just Looks scary but they cant use it very well#i think theyd live for a while as red but wouldnt win#all 3 deaths are directly caused by other players#the first was probably a yellow or green accidentally killing him while raiding the farm#second was entirely their own negligence like the trap would've been avoidable if they paid attention#they cant fly and their wings couldnt do much in the confinement of a pitfall#impact snapped their horn though#last one probably just a result of being bad at combat and panicking#anyway!!! my little guy :)

Just as a note from someone who's been in mcytblr for years now, qsmpblr you really have to start reblogging more posts.
Out of all the mcytblr fandoms I've been in, qsmpblr has some of the worst reblog to like ratios I've seen and that's incredibly sad because there are so many talented people in this space.
Reblogging is super important because it moves posts out of a tag and as the Tumblr search system is atrocious, a lot of those posts are lost to time if not reblogged.
The only reason people are able to find old posts a lot of the time and keep them circulating is because someone reblogged it. It keeps the qsmpblr ecosystem alive when you reblog stuff!
I have 3-4 year old posts from hermitblr and trafficblr that still get notes to this day because people find them on other people's blogs.
I'm not saying you have to reblog every single post you come across and I'm not trying to make you feel guilty if you don't, that's silly. But if you like something maybe consider reblogging it as well.
Think of it like a corkboard on your wall, you get to display a cool post whether it's art or a text post for others to see, and the poster is happy that their post has been acknowledged. It's a win-win!

[< - LOTS OF WORDS - >]
trafficblr, hear me out on this:
We've all seen the idea that the life series are seasons, right? I normally see it like this: third life - winter, last life - spring, double life - summer, limited life - fall/autumn. But I think of it more like this: third life - fall, last life - winter, double life - spring, limited life - summer. Listen:
I think it would be more interesting (and true to the series) if third life was fall. The main reason people say third life is winter is of course because of the "RED WINTER IS COMING!" line, but the truth is, red winter was on its way. Red winter was coming, but first comes fall. People are more tight-knit in third life, always staying true to their real, solid, established alliance, and we see this all the way until the end of the series. It reminds me of fall, but I can't explain how. I feel like the visuals of the season match up, with the lighter greens and browns that cover most of the server, the stone of the Crastle and Dogwarts, and the tans and yellows of the desert. People are getting nervous, scared, and towards the end, more bloodthirsty than before. As the final battle of dogwarts begins, you can see the first snows of a very, very painful winter. Grian, being the winner, shares some of these traits. He's quick to judge and slow to make allies, unsure of who might betray who next. He does keep his closest ally with him until the very end, where they decide theyre going to win together no matter what. Grian, at the end, is tired of the nervousness and painful loyalty that comes with autumn. He is ready for winter to begin.
And so we move on to last life. Here, at last, is our red winter. Death is rampant and vicious here, our first red name appearing in only episode 2. Everyone is cold this season- when you're red, you're out. There are no true alliances or friends, though people tend to fall into patterns when they need to. The reds are much more bloodthirsty this season, being unable to contain themselves around anyone else (though we see our one or two exceptions). So by the time the canary falls, this season's fate is sealed in a bloodbath. No one who has made it this far is arguing that winter this year is red. This season was much more muted visually, the world being covered in dark greens, browns, and greys, as well as the snow covering a decent portion of the map (again, playing into the winter theme). Scott started the series warm, and while he never did get that bitter edge winter has, he was certainly ready to grow outward again into spring.
Double life. A brand new season, full of hope and expectancy, though that fades as time goes on (like things that only bloom in spring). It's new, it's exciting, and for some, it's full of love (as spring is typically seen). Things get intense, but there's always this air of excited mystery. Everyone has played at least one game before, so they know what to expect. Or they think they do, because at every turn there is something new. Secret soulmates? Why not! Leaving your soulmate and choosing someone else? Wonderful! FISHING A WARDEN TO DEATH?! Well, anything for the content.... Pearl, to me, also fits her season. She starts out excited to meet her soulmate, albeit a bit nervous, but she's turned away almost immediately. And, well, who could blame her if she cried? (After all, 'april showers bring may flowers', or whatever it was) She picks herself back up (a plant budding after its flower falls off) and makes it alone. She makes it to summer. And if, in the end, she learned how to plant her seeds, who was going to stop her?
And, well, limited life. Alliances, while having establishing members, are flimsy and easily remade. Everyone is wild, and spontaneous, and most people aren't really gunning to win anymore. There are go-getters, and nobody likes losing (they'd like winning even less..), but no one is playing as seriously as they were before. Everyone has played at least 2 games by now, most have played 3, and this time around dying doesn't even cost you a whole life! It only costs you 30 minutes, which out of 24 hours? Basically nothing until you hit red. Alliances shift with the wind, and not everyone is quite playing by the rules. In the end, Martyn wins. Martyn is... a wild card. He could be like summer, if he wanted to. He could be like spring, or fall, or winter. He's a traveler, a shifter, a knight, anything he needs to be. And if that doesn't go with the fluidity and changeability of this season, then I don't know who else could have won.

Hello trafficblr and rtumblr I wrote a thing about shoving RT into the life series. Text version below the read more.
I believe the world is coming to an end, or else I guess I’m gonna pretend
Chapter 1: Second Canary
“Dirt shack, huh?”
Martyn stares at him and his bare approximate of a base with judgment. He frowns back.
“You expect anything else from me?”
“Not particularly,” Martyn admits with a shrug. “Rest of the group is gonna give you more grief for it than I am, though.”
At that, he flinches a little. Flicks his wrist to check his cufflinks. Hopes the nervousness doesn’t show on his face before he steels it and takes a few careful steps towards Martyn, who’s fiddling with an enchanted iron sword in his right hand.
“They can think whatever they want of me, Martyn.”
The man in the green shirt laughs to himself. “Keep telling yourself that, man. Tell me that when it’s session five, and you’re on red with no one as an ally. Grian’s already suspicious of you, you know.”
The look in Martyn’s eyes and the thinly veiled threat makes him pull out his own sword- diamond, lacking the purple gleam of an enchantment. His expression doesn’t change, but his eyes flicker with anger.
“Grian doesn’t know me.”
“Grian is the game master, and took a lot of convincing to bring you here. Biding your time may be your strategy, but it gets you nowhere with him.”
“Biding my time wins me the game.”
There’s a moment of silence, both men heavy in their iron armor weighed with tension. It’s broken by Martyn, who laughs again, sighs, and turns on his heel to walk away.
“Keep telling yourself that, Daniel!” Martyn calls over his shoulder as he makes his way into the thick forest, “They’re gonna start calling you the Second Canary!”
And with that, the green shirt man disappears into the thicket, leaving him alone with his dirt shack.
Daniel checks his cufflinks again. Still green. Thank god.

If you were to look across the battlefield, you would find four things.
The most jarring thing, a desert, sits at the edge, it's pale face ravaged by battles and explosions. A wide ravine stretches and cuts it in half.
Then, perhaps, you may spot the Crastle towering over the Red King's house. Walls surround the house, but the Crastle feared no one, so their only defense was the moat with a drawbridge.
After that, you may find a village, it's inhabitants long gone. A small bunker entrance is near the village, built to keep its inhabit safe.
And sequestered away in a small corner, you would see a place untouched by the war and chaos. The hill wrapped the buildings like a hug, with two houses tucked snugly inside. A pond with steps flows within thus safe valley, crops decorating the shore. Sheep and chickens are kept in pens, and a secret enchanting area is hidden behind a portal. It is peaceful in the flower valley. War did not touch this peaceful valley, its golden and cyan haired builders going out instead. It is poetic, I think, that it remains untouched by destruction. After all, the poppy colored man and his husband never sought out violence. They tried to avoid, stay alive. But it is the inevitability of this world, violence follows those colored red, like a fly follows garbage.
(It's funny how war never touched the hobbit hole. How it remained whole and relatively untouched while the desert was destroyed and the other bases looted and burnt)
¤¤¤¤¤
In honor of trafficblr winning and getting a third season, have this muse over the Flower Valley. I was rewatching Scott's Third life series, and I think it was one of the bases not destroyed, looted, or broken into. Just. Them.

Redstone in Last Life
me n the gang (@ahalliance and @happysarcasm) were talking about redstone earlier and i thought trafficblr might enjoy our thoughts and/or have some more to add on
Canonically, Lizzie and Big B have handled redstone dust and called it "human blood" twice.
in session 1:
Big B: Well, you’ve got your dogs to protect you, so you are very safe. Lizzie: Yes, I have many dogs. [...] And they’ve already had the taste of human blood. And guess what? They liked it. [...] Big B: Wait. [...] (throws her some redstone) Here's some human blood for the dogs. Lizzie: Ooo, thanks. Thank you very much. They'll love it!
and in session 2:
Big B: I come bearing gifts. Lizzie: Oh, I thought you were here to kill me. Big B: Human blood. (throws her some redstone) Lizzie: Oh, wow, they'll love it! (gives it to her dogs)
So, what if all redstone in Last Life was human blood?
If the server is "alive" in some capacity and wants bloodshed, then redstone being blood fits in with that theme. People use redstone to build traps. Using blood to spill blood, if you will
Redstone ore is rocks that were once on the surface when bloody battles were fought. Blood dried on the stone and got buried deep underground. Now people scrape the blood off the rocks and use the dust to power their machines
Since the server is alive, it can sense what people are doing with the redstone. If they aren't committed enough to spilling blood, the redstone functions poorly as a result.
Joel wasn't willing enough to kill people for the server's liking. It knew he would hesitate, so his traps failed him. If you're not committed enough to killing people, you get punished by keeping the Boogeyman curse until you do better.
This also has some fun implications about everyone giving redstone to Mumbo in sesson 1, and Mumbo saying his only hope for winning is redstone contraptions! :D
