Many people are visiting Shinjuku's Golden Gai, looking for streetbars and what not. But its getting super touristy. May I suggest going to Oimachi where there are many backstreet bars and the drinking and eating is cheap. Many of the places are drinking and eating but they close around 21:00. Went to an izakaya called Vampire (晩杯屋) where the 1st floor is standing only and sitting upstairs. Don't forget that November is for the annual Tori no Ichi (酉の市）festival to wish for good luck and prosperity in business. The festival is held on the day of the rooster (according to the old calendar).　The origin of Tori no Ichi market is very old and began in the Edo period. Vendors selling decorated bamboo rakes (kumade 熊手) are popular as it is supposed to to "rake" in happiness into the household and good fortune in business. I love going to the Tori no Ichi festivals just to watch the ritual that takes place when a large rake is sold.
