For whatever one’s view of Lawrence, it is almost certainly, and inevitably, incorrect.
It is that which makes him so fascinating whether as hero, writer, scholar, liar, or pervert, is immaterial. But what becomes increasingly clear, especially from the Selected Letters, is that he possessed a remarkable imperturbability of spirit – why else would he cut Herodotus’s tag, ‘OU ØPOVTIS’, which he loosely translated as ‘Wiworry’, in the lintel at Clouds Hill?
For all the faults of his nature, the histrionics and depression and subtle building-up of reputation, he remained impressively true to his avowed purposes. All his other smoke-screens and fancies, his near-manic string-pulling, his habit of always approaching, as soldiers say, through ‘dead ground’, seems to have obscured this fact. Meanwhile, the world has grown grey with the breath of pro- and anti-Lawrence factions.
Yet surely not all that great horde of truly loving and so often desperately worried friends, not Churchill, Nancy Astor, Forster, Trenchard, both Shaws, both Hardys, Graves, Williamson can have been wrong about T E Lawrence? They accepted that he did not always know his own mind, nor always tell the truth, nor usually tell the same tale to different people. They knew – and his letters prove – that he was marvellous company, clever, kind, loyal, generous, modest as well as falsely modest, and possessed, as near as makes no odds, of a species of genius. They knew, too, as he did – or at least they suspected and feared – that he was marked for death. Above all, they would have agreed with Cecil Day-Lewis (quoted in A Touch of Genius): ‘Being out of sympathy with those who have sought, by diminishing him as a scholar, a writer and a military leader, to cut him down to their own size, I maintain my conviction that he was an exceptional human being.’ Whatever Lawrence’s own lies, this is both true and, from these two books, entirely self-evident.

Thornfield - A Jane Eye Broadchurch AU
“Laws and principles are not for times when there is no temptation.“
A body is found on the beach in Thornfield, a small coastal town that relies heavily on the tourism business. The woman has no identification and no one recognizes her. Her identity is as much a mystery as how she died.
DI John Rivers has just arrived in town for a fresh start at a new jow. He almost doesn’t recognize the place until he drives past a school that is closed and falling into disrepair. Lowood. He was here some eight years ago to look into a case of possible fraud, but instead discovered a horrifying case of abuse against the girls boarding there.
Jane Eyre doesn’t like to talk about her past, or the brief time she was in the newspapers after the death of her best and only friend Helen. The one thing she holds onto from that time is an interest in the law. She’s a DS in Thornfield now. She remembers DI Rivers but hopes he doesn’t make the connection. She’s good at her job and doesn’t need his pity.
Their investigation leads them to the door of Edward Rochester, the richest man in town. Jane finds herself drawn to him, even suspecting he knows more about the dead woman than he pretends. Rivers cautions her not to become emotionally involved with a case, but there’s something about him that touches her in a way no one else has. And then there’s the girl, his young ward Adele. Once, before Lowood, she’d been the lonely little ward in a grand house too.
Guests are gathered at Rochester’s home. Was the woman on the beach one of them? Does the haughty Miss Ingram know anything? Why is Mr. Mason so nervous when they talk to him? What role does Grace Poole play in the household?
Rivers needs to solve a case after the last one ended so badly. Jane needs to know who she can trust.

Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead
Andrew, with Mathew Baynton and Toby Jones, stars in a new production of the play that made Tom Stoppard's reputation overnight in 1967.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Hamlet's ill-fated attendant lords, condemned to an existence in the wings, with no control over their own destinies.

Albatross Residence on the Gold Coast
17 Nov 2020
Albatross Residence – Gold Coast Property
Architects: Studio Workshop
Location: The Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia
The Albatross Residence is a three-storey pair of beach residences with an east-facing aspect toward the pacific ocean, situated along a narrow, busy thoroughfare. An array of vertical fins is deployed to serve multiple functions including sun-shading, privacy, curation of views, and to modulate the scale of the overall form.
This project is all about context and a façade that is made in response. Engagement with the coast road and by extension, to the beach, is critically important in this project. Albatross Avenue is characterized by continual blocks of duplex developments each flexing their muscles for attention.
The façade at 8 Albatross, while confidently articulate, counters the cacophony of building styles along the street by attempting to create a sense of restraint and to offer the appearance of a singular, coherent building form.
Additionally, the subtropical climate of southeast Queensland affords a highly permeable relationship to the outdoors, and the design attends to this by providing a high degree of connection via the façade, private outdoor spaces, and roof garden.
The Pacific Ocean is the principal cognitive attractor on the site, and therefore the project puts particular emphasis on these views. On a very tight building allotment, the project attempts to maximize and balance the living area in relation to orientation and user experience.
8 Albatross is spatially generous and achieves a balance of connection to the environment with privacy in its suburban surroundings of very closely-spaced neighbours. The internal relationship of programs situate services, vertical circulation, and amenities at the core to allow communal and shared spaces to spill to the outdoors.
Occupants enjoy a combination of prospect and refuge in relation to the ocean and street, respectively. There is a disciplined exuberance afforded to occupants that is experienced through the promenade from approach to entry to arrival, with accentuation through views taken via the mediating veil and occupation of the roof garden.
The project attempts to contribute to the public domain of Albatross Avenue by offering a singular and coherent building form to a street context which overly varied in character. The veiled façade provides a restrained mask through which to read the building and through this activates a kind of aesthetic engagement not found elsewhere in the immediate context.
The overall height is sympathetic and consistent with neighboring buildings, and subtle articulations break down the scale to provide a humanistic dialogue with occupants and passers-by.

Update from the mod: Annual Report of the ABF (Oct2019)
So another year has passed and it’s time to look back and note all that Andrew has been doing over the last twelve months.
Since update 2018 Andrew has worked with Erin Doherty, Emerald Fennell, Toby Jones, Mathew Baynton, Otto Farrant, Lena Dunham and others on a variety of projects. As usual he has made few public appearances and only rarely troubled social media with his exploits. Fortunately, one of the very few was this lovely fan encounter in London just before Christmas:
At this time last year we were looking forward to:
The ABC Murders
Intrigo: Samaria
Baghdad in my Shadow
We weren’t disappointed with Agatha Christie’s mystery The ABC Murders. It premiered at Christmas featuring John Malkovich, Tara Fitzgerald, Freya Mavor and Rupert Grint alongside Andrew, who for the first time played a villain. As we have come to expect, Andrew’s performance has highly praised:
Another god: Andrew Buchan; knocked it out of the park; astoundingly good; breathtaking; unbelievable intensity; brilliant, so gripping and deliciously dark; I don’t think I’ve seen evil more effectively played - I felt sick watching him; chillingly sinister, yet charming; a great nuanced performance; sublime; giving Malkovich a run for his money; a revelation; absolutely sensational! A pure acting masterclass.
Even screenwriter Sarah Phelps proclaimed: Wasn’t Andy fantastic! The rushes put tingles up my spine and made my blood fizz!
One year on we still await the general release of both Baghdad In My Shadow
and Intrigo: Samaria
although there are now trailers to whet our appetite.
As 2019 began, we were awaiting news of any new projects…. Then, as January closed and The Crown series 3 wrapped, we discovered that Andrew was playing the role of Andrew Parker Bowles – the first husband of Camilla. Just three days later a new radio drama production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead for BBC Radio4 was heralded (via a random tweet!) – for broadcast at the end of March.
Andrew was Guildenstern to Mathew Baynton’s Rosencrantz with Toby Jones as The Player.
Two weeks later Andrew’s role in the new Alex Rider series was announced, alongside Vicky McClure, Otto Farrant & Stephen Dillane.
In the last month we’ve also found out about:
Industry – produced by Lena Dunham and filmed in Cardiff over the summer
The Spanish Princess – series 2 – in the role of Sir Thomas More – filming in Bristol currently
Carnival Row - series 2 – due to film in Prague soon
Photos of the year
Andrew’s new headshot:
With Andrew Scott at BFI celebration for Olivia Colman:
This unexplained appearance at St Paul’s Prep School:
....and that rare video of Andrew at home in June:
We look forward to potentially a veritable feast over the next few months, though it remains to be seen just how substantial each course will be (or where it might be served)!
Meanwhile…..
….. ABF now has an archive of nearly 3,700 different posts, 26 themed pages and over 400 followers.
Thank you to all Andrew fans – especially to @madandi - my partner in crime and to @geminigmo, @llywela13, @liathgorn, @john5747 @followingyourbliss and Pamela for still being here.
Best wishes to Andrew, Amy and family for the next year.
Cheers – demurely1
