What if: the animorphs were trans
I think I've written most of them as trans before, but I could also see each of them having a different experience with trans-ness.
Jake: Would just not bother to start performing femininity? Like, he'd mean to get around to it some time, but then he'd be at puberty and still wouldn't have bothered. And it's just so much easier being a boy. It requires less mental effort. His brain just defaults to boy-ness, and anyway he's bored of this subject already and wants to get back to fighting yeerks now.
Rachel: Is not only the girliest girl ever to girl, but has read all the feminist theory. She has clear opinions on her name, her clothes, her earrings, her hormones, her makeup, her hair... This is a girl who gets gender euphoria from spending up to an hour crafting her look each morning, and will never be caught with lipstick that doesn't color-coordinate with her blouse. There are a lot of TERFs in her town who keep ending up mauled by grizzly bears, but that's not Rachel's problem. She hears it was some other grizzly doing all that.
Tobias: Arguably he's already genderqueer and/or trans in canon, but he'd be the polar opposite of Rachel when it comes to talking about gender. He just is a boy, okay? Except when he's not. And that's just how it is. His gender is hawk. And sometimes it's hork-bajir. And sometimes it's andalite. And sometimes it's human. And if you ask follow-up questions he's going to disappear up a tree and never interact with humanity again.
Cassie: She's happy in her own body. Overalls are comfortable, dresses are fun, and anyone who can't figure out her pronouns at a glance isn't her problem. Okay, that one guy (#14) who called her a "boy" deserved to get kicked in the face, which is why she kicked him in the face. But everyone else trying to figure out her gender has their own problems, and she's not here to solve them.
Ax: Again, arguably not-cis in canon (his human body is implied to be intersex) but he'd be gung-ho about his gender just like Rachel. Andailte masculinity doesn't line up with human masculinity (e.g. Elfangor's comment about how Real Boys don't like STEM), so it'd be a lot of Ax Doing Boy Things in a way that doesn't make sense to Americans. But if gardening or sharpening his tail or refusing to learn math is what Ax is feeling, his friends aren't likely to question it.
Marco: ???? TBH I'm stumped. He both pulls genderfuckery (having long hair, being a clothes horse, going in drag in #51) and obsesses over being masculine enough. Him being the resident bicultural bisexual probably has something to do with it, but...??? Other fandalites, send help.

Anyway in like seven books, I’ve gone from being like “Rachel is fine but she feels like a character who is more useful than interesting” to “I AM A RACHEL GIRLIE AND SHE AND TOBIAS ARE GONNA MAKE IT WORK!!” We love an angry teen girl always ready to fight but also burdened by the perception of her own strength and bravery who also turns into a grizzly bear.

Rachel’s relationship with shopping isn’t actually about her feeling validated by it.
She’s not an airhead fashionista mall-crawler in her own narration, or in her interactions with Tobias and Cassie. She treats shopping like it’s a challenge, like it’s a game to be won with the sales and the deals. She dresses up for social clout and power, not to fit in with a trend.
canonically, she’s not particularly concerned with popularity. she’s not on the cheer squad, she doesn’t hang out with shallow girls, she avoids the pitfalls of parties and dates that other preps would get tripped up by. she thrives on showing up to the homecoming dance with the Hot Mysterious Boy on her arm while also being the hottest girl in school, but it’s a performance. her femininity isn’t rooted in gender presentation - she feels more herself in the body of a male eagle or grizzly bear than in a pastel pink mini with a made-up face. she’d never go out dressed in something ugly or badly fitting, but it’s not just because she has standards
her relationship to the mall, and to fashion, and to shopping, is about putting on a facade. it’s fun to play dress-up. it’s fun to take up space and command attention. it’s exaggerating femininity for the purposes of personal enjoyment. it’s drag, almost.
and you can see this in her internal narration! she uses the mall as an excuse to spend time with people and scratch an itch, she’s not constantly worried about her hair or her makeup - and those do take effort to maintain, particularly if you have a foundation that loves to settle into all the fine lines. Jake and Tobias and Cassie see more in her before her polished facade, Marco’s the one who primarily characterizes her as “Miss Teen Model” and a mall-crawler, and that’s because Marco really wishes he could get the kind of positive male attention Rachel gets.
If Marco were Rachel, he would be shallow and obsessed with looking pretty and flirting with boys, so Marco assigns that importance to Rachel in his own narration. but she doesn’t like Flirting With Boys, and he doesn’t like girls or really understand the high of being the hottest person in the room, so they’re always at cross-purposes. Tobias is, as usual, the only one who sees all of Rachel at once, and the only one who ever truly glories in how herself she is when she’s in morph.

I have no ideas what animorph is but I already seen it mentioned on at least 5 different blog which have nothing to do with each other (you being the 5th) what the hell is it???
90s/early 00s young adult sci-fi book series of around 60 short books, published once a month, by K A Applegate.
The books were distributed cheeply by the Scholastic book fair, and could be found in most school libraries thought the Mid 00s.
The plot was 5 normal kids have to stop a secret alien invasion by turning into various animals, and the books were known for starting off with quirky humour and very rapidly decending into utter existential horror with body horror, possession horror, and the ptsd you'd get if you were actually a teen super hero and had to fight an actual war with real stakes aged 13-16, and the fear of never knowing who your real enemy might be. The series ended about a month before 9/11 with a disastrous final battle and a grim warning about how war never really fixes any of the underlying problems between rival nations or peoples, and just destroys good people, so... yeah, ooof.
Due to the content, beloved by horror fans, super hero fans, Sci fi fans, furries (the kids have the power to turn into animals for combat and it gets real weird real fast), and the queer and the trans community, so it turns up on a lot of unrelated blogs.
The audio books are still readily available and are pretty well done, and the cover art of the books was gloriously 90s.
Behold!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was also a tv show we dont talk about.
The main cast were:
Jake: the leader. There is an evil alien slug living in his brother's head, and this causes issues for him.
Cassie: Jake's crush. The moral center of the books. Also her parents are veterinarians at a zoo, with is very fucking convenient if you need a ready sourse of animals to turn into.
Marco: Jake's best friend, the smart one. Also uses inappropriate humour to cope with trauma (relatable).
Rachel: Jake's cousin. Uses turning into a grizzly bear and committing extreme violence to cope with her trauma (relatable).
Tobias: perminantly turns into a bird to escape his trauma (most relatable) but then has to deal with extreme body and mental dismorphia as a result. Has a star-crossed lovers plot with Rachel. He is my favorite.
Ax: an alien teenager they just adopted and hide in the woods. Is also my favourite. He's a bright blue centar with stalk-eyes and a sythe tail, and he loves Cinabon and warcrimes. Due to his extreme alien mindset, he's been taken as a metaphor for Neurodivergance, but it's unclear if that was the author's original intent.
The books are awesome, and still available as e-books, comics and audio books I'd you want to check them out.
Here is a video essay that does a far better job of explaining:

Watching Hannibal for the first time Ep 8-11
Tumblr media
Episode 8. I need MatPat to figure out if you could turn a person into a cello. THAT IS THE FILM THEORY I WANT! Anyway, Franklin comes back in this episode. Another fun fact, I work in dentistry, and I did not know Catgut was real animal innards. My instructors left that little tidbit out. I love that Hannibal is offered friendship by Franklin, his little fanboy patient. Lecter is so annoyed by it, he just could not care less. Then Tobias, who is also a deadly psychopath, Hannibal seems just as bothered. It's great. Tobias swinging around that wire tool thing, looked a little silly. It was giving weeb kid busting out their special attack. I did appreciate men in suits beating the Hell out of each other. Also Will and Alana kiss, it's whatever, I feel no chemistry between them.
Tumblr media
Episode 9
Abigail finally comes back, she's haunted by the man she killed and is going to write a book about the murders with Freddie. We learn that Freddie is a smug vegetarian. I just know this woman fat-shames people. She eats half a cutie orange and just gushes about how full she is. I'll fight this woman in a parking lot. Also, Abigail did help father capture girls for him to kill. I won't lie I lost a lot of sympathy for Abigail. However, It makes sense that Hannibal would be so interested in her. I think he sees Abigail and Will as kindred spirits, in his own way. Yet, he still views them as things to be played with.
Human totem poll. It was such a good design. The skulls are the corners.
Episode 10
Tumblr media
Skin just slipping off the body. It got me. It's the little things that get me. Just slid off her like a rubber glove.
Hannibal has an interesting way of treating his friends. I think lying to Will about his encephalitis, is an attempt on his part to keep him close. He wants will, but I don't think Hannibal is capable of seeing other humans as, well people. I think he views them more like animals, something he can control.
Every time Will has an episode he runs to Hannibal. So it is working, if Will was well, he might spend less time with him. Hannibal's own psychiatrist mentions that he needs someone who deserves his friendship. I think this may be a way for him to test Will.
Bisected head. I cannot praise the SFX makeup enough.
Episode 10
Tumblr media
This might be my favorite episode of the season. Being awake during your own dissection, grizzly. The tongues pulled through the slit necks. Simple, and very effective. I like seeing Freddie have that smug grin wiped off her face. I was bothered that Alana was put into protective custody, but Chilton was not. Like, he was the guy who messed with the serial killer, of course, he was going to get got.
They seemed so surprised, y'all are FBI agents pull it together.
Hugh Darcy does a great job, acting like someone on the brink. Another fun fact, they often use baby oil to make actors look sweaty. Hugh was probably swimming in the stuff.
Three more episodes. That I will post about later, and give my feelings on the first season as a whole.

First impressions of Animoprhs!
I'm listening to the Animorphs series while I work, through Animorphs Aloud - a fan made reading of the series. Here are my first impressions/random thoughts about them! Spoilers below if you haven't read them.
Book 7: The Stranger
I often think how you'd REALLY react if you were faced with something paranormal or magical, because it wouldn't just be the monster or ghost or superhero you have to contend with - but your entire knowledge of the universe flipping on it's head. Legit consider how insane you'd go if you found out monsters were *really* real. And they do this to a random person in the start of most books! Ha.
Kind of surprised they consider a human-alien relationship with any sort of seriousness. How progressive. But then there's been a few hints towards Rachel liking Tobias and he's...a bird. Rachel is very open minded.
Somehow I have my doubts Rachel will move away. The clue is the 47 books that come after this.
Man I feel for Tobias, having to spend the rest of his life as a hawk while potentially watching his friends move on. It's not like he can make new friends. Also how long does he even live? Does he have a hawk lifespan now of 10-15 years?
Rachel wants more firepower and she skips the POLAR BEARS? GIRL. Those things are fucking terrifying! Though I did do a bit of research and turns out when Polar Bears and Grizzlies compete for food it's usually the Polar Bears that leave.
Also I have a hard time believing a bear has more 'firepower' than an elephant. Bit easier to move around and get into places as a bear though.
Still can't get over the frequent use of the slang 'hooked up' to mean meeting. Very different meaning nowadays.
The mental image of them fitting pretty much a centaur into a dressing room is very funny.
Wow. Stopping time definitely blindsided me. This Ellimist is like a god?? Was not expecting that.
The descriptions when the Ellimist is showing off the beauty of earth make me very sad I will likely not get to experience it. It's so sad to know coral reefs exist out there, beauty unparalleled, and you can't simply go and see them. Not without money. It's a cruel joke that we're placed on such an amazing planet and yet how little of it we'll see.
Man this is a genuinely tough decision. I really like Cassie's perspective, that humans are now the endangered animals potentially rejecting the one thing that could save them. Honestly if what seemed like a literal god told me the fight is unwinnable I'd probably give in and tell them to take me to a new planet.
Aaaand now the kids are getting eaten alive. I LOVE the amount of traumatising scenarios in these books. Main reason I started em. Feel a bit bad for the Taxon, imagine eating some innocuous snack and it swells up and bursts you from the inside.
Ax has a thing for cutting off people's arms.
You're the second largest carnivore on land Rachel, Polar Bears got you beat.
Also Rachel totally just murdered a bunch of human people.
Now...time travel? Hm not a big fan of time travel.
Damn the Yeerks invested in free, superfast and wide-covering public transport? I'd vote for them.
This is why I don't like time travel. Is it deterministic? Can it be changed? Boggles the mind. The implication is they refuse the Ellimist's offer and stay and fight, and lose, and Rachel becomes a controller. But why would Ax being there mean the future has changed? Did future-Rachel lie about there being six humans to Visser-Three? Why?
PFFFF I'm sorry but as horrifying as the idea of them killing and consuming Tobias after being infected and turned into controllers is, it's also like Disney-level villainy.
If this is the future and it can be changed, why can't Visser-Three kill them? Sure he wouldn't have controller Rachel so the future would be different but the goal of invading would work?
Well this is looking bleak.
I wonder who is keeping Ellimists in check that they even need rules.
Surprisingly quick and efficient mission! And that's the end of that one. A bit confusing, but I wonder if the Ellimist stuff will get clearer later on.

Tobias tuesday and im thinking about how much shit that kid experienced in his life..... like spending the first 13 yrs of your existence living with horrible relatives who dont care about your wellbeing and being bullied at school and having no close friends then all of a sudden you watch an alien battle one night in an abandoned construction site and you dont know it but the alien who speaks to you and gives you powers before horrificly dying is your father... then choosing to be a bird over a human because you would rather live that life than the one you lead, and now you have to reckon with the fact that you hunt to eat now, and also theres an intergalactic war going on, and all you want to do is float on the thermals but there is a parasitic invasion of earth happening so you cant do that... and this goes on for almost three years and you find out who your dad was and get tortured by basically the embodiment of taylor swift (twice!) and maim/kill thousands of aliens weekly but also gain an amazing group of friends who are 4/5ths humans and 1/5th your uncle oh and also you have a girlfriend who spends half of her time as a grizzly bear but thats not important. bc all of a sudden the war amps up and your friend fakes his death and you find out your mother is still alive and doesnt remember you or what happened to her but you still choose to save her from capture/enslavement/death because the whole arc of your story/life is figuring out who you are and what you care about-

My animorphs hyperfixation has returned a tiny bit so time for a RANDOM HYPERFIXATION MIX THINGY
(Inside Out + Animorphs) [its a headcanon sorta thing about what if they had morphing powers]
Since they’re emotions acquiring animal DNA would be difficult so maybe emotions probably don’t have to follow that logic (Or maybe in this scenario Riley is an Animorph and she’s acquired some morphs, and her emotions automatically have those same morphs?)
Joy - at least once (probably multiple times) almost nothlit-ed as a red panda, or dog (someone else had to remind her about the morph time limit of 2 hours) [a nothlit is someone who goes past the 2 hour limit in a morph, and ends up stuck in that morph. Tobias being an example of this, he ended up stuck as a red-tailed hawk.]
Sadness - she has a raccoon morph. I can’t explain why. When she’s not needed for a while, she sometimes roams Headquarters as a raccoon for a little while when she’s bored. She climbs on everything when in her raccoon morph though.
Fear - prefers fast-moving morphs, like a cheetah or gazelle. He also likes specific species like opossums and cats. He uses the cheetah and opossum the most. He ends up knocking memories out of the short term memory thing when he zooms through headquarters as a cheetah though.
Disgust - has to tolerate Fear’s opossum morph, to her annoyance. She doesn’t like morphing because the process grosses her out. She usually avoids it unless she has to. When she does morph, her preferred morph is a cat.
Anger - he has a grizzly bear morph. He almost tried to maul Fear while morphed once. Either it was simply bear instinct and he stopped himself, or the others had to physically restrain him.
Bing Bong - no morphing powers for him, he would be a bit of a troublemaker with them, bothering mind workers and other inhabitants of Riley’s mind. (And probably stealing more memories n putting them in his bottomless bag)
Anxiety - almost nothlit-ed as an opossum once. Both she and Fear freaked out during the realization that she had to quickly morph back before she was stuck that way.
(Not including the rest of the IO 2 emotions because we don’t know how they’re like).

I just found out there's an Animorphs tv series so please enjoy my thoughts
Tumblr media
Why do these 13 year olds have a dog with them in an arcade
Tumblr media
Look at this night scene, so night time, much dark
Tumblr media
Wow they didn't even have like, any budget at sdfgjkl
Tumblr media
Why did the cube-touching take like a full 20 minutes
Tumblr media
WHAT IS THIS SDFKL
Tumblr media
'Tobias, guard this with your life'
Tumblr media
*yeets it into fucking orbit*
Tumblr media
Wow it's just like how I imagined them
Tumblr media
Homer is the goodest boy ever and the absolute chillest dog
Tumblr media
Amazing
Tumblr media
Just top tier really
Tumblr media
Honestly.... pretty book accurate
Tumblr media
These are 13 year olds
Tumblr media
Rachel trying to eat Marco was legitimately funny
Tumblr media
Ah yes, a normal 16 year old
Tumblr media
The books: Let's never be seen together
This show: we are all in Jake's room together with the door closed for completely innocent reasons
Tumblr media
The books: did Tobias become a hawk on purpose....?
Show Tobias: I LOVE HAWKS LOVE BEING A HAWK DON'T YOU LOVE HAWKS RACHEL? GOD I WANT TO BE A HAWK FOREVER btw I stalked you a little I assume that's cool
Also mid-episode 3 I was thinking no way they have actual battle-morphs in this shoestring budget show
HOWEVER
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I guess no budget for a grizzly bear sdjkl
Tumblr media
The books: Visser Three is evil and terrifying
The show: this fucking thing
Tumblr media
I actually thought Tobias' bluff about working for Visser Three was smart but THEY JUST LEFT CASSIE BEHIND??? Why did she not go with them sdfjkl
Tumblr media
Okay, mistaking a random animal for your friend is funny but I hope Tobias is okay, and nothing bad happens at all, I'm sure he will be completely fine and have a normal number of arms and a mouth when he shows up again
(also thought Jake was Jimmy Olsen from Smallville but I was once again bamboozled by the concept of identical twins)

@doodlee-a said: Do the kids have a favourite animal before/after everything?
Tobias: Probably cats before the war. During/after the war, that's pretty self-evidently red-tailed hawk.
Jake: Before the war, dog. During/after the war, he's pretty firmly pro-human.
Cassie: Before the war, horse. During/after the war, she seems to really like dolphin and dog and anything that lets the morpher be carefree for a time.
Rachel: Before the war, elephant or grizzly bear. During the war, it's more likely to be house cat.
Marco: Before the war, humans. During/after the war, it might just be wolf spider.
Ax: Before the war, he mentions really wanting to see a Lebtin Javelin Fish. During/after the war? Red-tailed hawk.

concept: rachel’s carrying a bunch of things. tobias: “can i hold some of that?” she shifts the weight to one arm and gives him her hand
this is a great and adorable concept and also valid and correct but i am gonna say that when i read it at first i pictured rachel in grizzly morph handing tobias her severed arm like “here you beat someone to death with it this time while i take care of this stuff.” which would also be Them bc they do have the range

actually here’s my list of Alternative Battle Morphs that I wish had gotten used
Jake: either he gets to keep the jaguar from 11 and alternates between that and his tiger or he finds a way to make the Howler morph battle-viable and keeps it as an ace up his sleeve; I sort of feel like this is basic because the Howler in particular is something people wish he’d use all the time
Rachel: I kind of think it would be neat if she switched the grizzly bear for the polar bear mid-series, or else if she’d stayed with the elephant as a primary and kept the ursine option open in an emergency
Tobias: why doesn’t he use a Hork-Bajir battle morph more often?
Cassie: wolf this and wolf that but honestly? Honestly? I want to see what she could do with the leopard from 19. If I’m sticking to canonical morphs she has, obviously polar bear is up there (and I love the idea of her and Rachel fighting back to back) but I’m also on Team Chimpanzee.
Marco: he’s honestly the hardest because he’s the least adventurous morpher, and the morph he has that I think would be useful in a fight (cobra) is really limited, but I’d still like to see more stealth and assassin work using one-hit kills, and Marco’s strategizing and planning would work well with something like a cobra’s glass cannon stats
Ax: if I gave him a battle morph based on what he got in canon it would be a bull. Intact bulls are fucking dangerous and he deserves to lose it now and again.
