Still early in the morning near the steamy cliffs of Kilauea, Leckie could hear the hissing of the lava as it fell into the ocean and the clouds of steam that rose from the waves. The little whale paddled with all her might towards the kayak, happy as ever to see him as she chirped and sang.

“Jeez Keiko,” he chuckled. “If I knew you were coming I would’ve had Hoosier or Vera catch you some fish.” 

The baby orca blew a spray of water right up at him and continued following Leckie. Out of all the orcas who swam around the island, Keiko was probably one of the most independent calves he had ever met but that was probably due in part to Sedna’s influence. She may have been a cold water sea goddess, but her influence reached all across the world no matter where her son was. 

Around the face of the cliff he went, rowing across the surface of the calm seas until he saw the familiar shores ahead. Never had there been a more perfect morning, a glorious sunrise and the warming sight of an old friend.....

“Well, well, well,” snided a poisonous voice. “If it isn’t the friendly neighborhood bedwetter.” 

“You know,” Leckie said with a sarcastic chuckle. “I wake up every morning wondering if you’ll ever be stupid enough to sail close to the lava cliffs.” 

Larkin went a bit red at the ears. “Could you be any more of an uncultured plebian?” he sniffed. 

“Unfortunately for you, Larkin,” Leckie responded rather acidly. “It’s us so called plebeians who provide snobs like you with work. So unless you want to find yourself out of a job you’ll go the hell away.” 

“You little shit,” Larkin hissed.

A misty geyser of water shot up close to the kayak, startling Larkin out of his wits and capsizing the kayak. Leckie laughed as Keiko swam right back to him, flipping her flukes as she dove back beneath the water. NOW his morning really was perfect.
